Luke Combs Used Denial Letter From ‘The Voice’ As Motivation: “Had It On My Wall For A Long Time”
You’d be hard pressed to find a voice like Luke Combs in the country music business.
Funny enough, the TV show The Voice would agree with that thought, though it still wasn’t enough to give Luke Combs a spot on the show when he auditioned. Yes, that’s right. Combs is one of the many successful modern artists that have come out and said they were rejected by a singing competition series early in their career.
Spoiler alert: nearly every artist that has missed out The Voice or American Idol has turned out better because of it.
As both Luke and Blake Shelton have explained, the NBC singing show basically turned down the “Hurricane” singer because he was… well, kind of boring. Somebody in a suit over at The Voice said, “This guy can sing, but he doesn’t have a story, so he doesn’t make the cut.” Makes you wonder if these singing competition shows are even worth watching, am I right?
Recently, Combs sat down with 60 Minutes Australia (he just finished a “Down Under” tour leg) and the topic of being rejected by The Voice came up. The country music star explained that the show didn’t think he had a good enough story, and that he found out he wouldn’t be on the show through a letter in the mail.
For the longest time, Luke Combs kept that letter penned up in his room, as he explained in the interview:
“It was the ‘no headline’ thing. They were like… they sent me a letter, I’m sure I have it somewhere because I had it on my wall for a long time. It wasn’t a, ‘I’m gonna show them’ thing. It wasn’t that at all.
To me, the letter was validation of the things that I already thought, which was, ‘I think that I have the ability to do this.’ Getting on the show, to me, it was never about that. It was never, ‘I need to get on the show, that’ll be my big break.’ That was not the thought at the time.”
So the letter sort of acted as bulletin board material?
Combs basically said that though being told he wasn’t good enough for The Voice was a tough pill to swallow, the contents of the rejection letter were more important to him than actually getting on the show. He truly viewed it as a “glass half full,” even though he wasn’t able to compete on television:
“The letter essentially said, ‘Hey, you’re a really great singer, but this is a show and there needs to be entertainment value and we have to be able to tell a story… and you just don’t really have a story.’ I was okay with that. I was like, ‘Whatever, that’s great. So you’re saying I’m a pretty good singer?’ That’s all I needed to hear.”
Luke Combs didn’t let The Voice passing on him slow him down. If anything, it acted as a catapult for the rest of his career… because they did admit they were impressed with his voice… which leads me to calmly ask ISN’T THAT THE NAME OF THE SHOW THOUGH?
Forgive me for the all caps. Let’s quickly move along to the part of the interview where even Luke Combs kind of agreed with The Voice saying they weren’t interested in the person that would one day become of the most successful modern country artists:
“I was always say that if the shoe was on the other foot and I was the producer, and I walked in, I’d be like, ‘You telling me this guy is the guy that’s going to be doing something? No, I don’t think so pal.’ I would’ve said the same thing. I probably wouldn’t have believed in me either.
One of the best things that ever happened to me.. not getting on ‘The Voice.’ Probably saved me from a completely different path that would have not led to here. I’m thankful for sure.”
Funny how life works out.
