Vance Addresses Concerns About Religious Liberty in the US and Abroad

At a time when nongovernmental organizations are under intense scrutiny for what they are doing with federal funding, religious leaders, nonprofit executives, and religious liberty advocates gathered Wednesday to hear Vice President JD Vance articulate the Trump administration’s position on religious freedom. “Now, our administration believes we must stand for religious freedom, not just as a legal principle—as important as that is—but as a lived reality, both within our own borders and especially outside them. In recent years, too often has our nation’s international engagement on religious liberty issues been corrupted and distorted to the point of uncertainty,” Vance said at the International Religious Freedom Summit, an annual gathering of the biggest players in preserving religious conscience around the world. Vance called out the government sending federal taxpayer dollars abroad to nongovernmental organizations dedicated to spreading atheism across the globe. His remarks came as the Trump administration is making significant changes to United States foreign aid to cut not only waste, fraud, and abuse but also to curb the Left’s use of foreign aid to spread its ideology around the world. Most U.S. Agency for International Development employees will be put on administrative leave Friday, according to the agency’s website. The Trump administration has close ties to the religious freedom summit. Sam Brownback, who served as the ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom during Trump’s first term, is a current co-chair, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously served as co-chair of the summit.  In his remarks at the summit, Vance began by joking that his seven-year-old had to come to work with him and probably felt his liberty was being violated. Vance then highlighted the importance of faith to American renewal.  “We know in America, faith nurtures our communities,” the vice president told the audience. Vance argued against the modern conceit that religious freedom arose as a liberal principle rather than proceeding from the centuries of church teaching in the West. He cited early church leaders, including Tertullian, and noted that Founding Fathers like John Adams and Thomas Jefferson had drawn inspiration from the early church fathers.  The vice president talked about fostering a culture where faith can thrive. He discussed how he had grown up Christian but not as a regular churchgoer. He joked that his grandmother had told him that even the Episcopalians in her childhood home of eastern Kentucky were snake handlers. Vance noted the importance of how the church was a gathering place for all citizens: “The thing about it, the church was a place—it still is—where people of different races, different backgrounds, different walks of life came together and committed to their shared communities and enforcing commitment to their God.”  Vance also said the United States must help Christians in Iraq. “We must be able to look at the catastrophes like the plight of Iraq’s Christians over the past three decades and possess the moral clarity to act when something’s gone wrong.” He praised the assembled advocates in the room, highlighting that their support for religious liberty was a recognition of the fundamental dignity of mankind. “Thank you for safeguarding the rights of faith communities across the globe, and thank you most of all for believing, because we know that the source of religious liberty is the recognition that all of us are equal under the rights and laws of God, and that principle will guide us in the years to come,” Vance concluded.  Reacting to the speech, Drew Bowling, who serves as the congressional co-chair of the International Religious Freedom Summit, told The Daily Signal, “Vice President Vance hit it out of the park, quoting with precision key principles of his deep Catholic faith, to firmly and eloquently declare that the second Trump administration will act with even greater intent and effect to protect international religious freedom, including here at home in the United States.” He added, “I sat with the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch, His Holiness Aphrem II from Damascus, and Bishop Zaidan, who runs international affairs for the USCCB [United States Conference of Catholic Bishops]. We, as with the entire audience of so many faith traditions from across the country and the globe representing large diaspora populations in the United States, were universally thrilled.” This year, the International Religious Freedom Summit was sponsored in part by Meta (the parent company of Facebook), the Religious Freedom Institute, Pepperdine University, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. JUST IN: Mitch McConnell Falls Down Senate Stairs After Casting Vote For Trump Cabinet Nominee

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) fell down the Senate stairs after casting a vote on Wednesday, multiple outlets reported. According to Daily Mail, the 82-year-old Republican “fell down a marble staircase on Capitol Hill Wednesday after voting for Donald Trump’s Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner.” BREAKING: Senator Mitch McConnell has reportedly fallen down the stairs AGAIN as he was leaving the Senate today. Senators had to help him up. Via: Punchbowl News pic.twitter.com/y60JSdC0NX — The Calvin Coolidge Project (@TheCalvinCooli1) February 5, 2025 Daily Mail reports: The Kentucky Republican’s stumble occurred just after the longtime lawmaker exited the Senate floor. He was reportedly helped up by Sens. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla). McConnell, the former longtime leader of the Senate Republicans from 2007 – 2025, has been battling a string of health issues over the last few years. And his fall Wednesday raises fresh questions about his ability to do his job and the advanced age of so many of the nation’s political leaders. ‘It’s time to retire,’ conservative commentator Benny Johnson said of McConnell after the fall Wednesday. ‘The Congress is a den of liars, thieves and apparently now nursing home patients,’ X user George Behizy posted. ‘Mitch McConnell needs to retire.’ The Republican has been involved in multiple falls while working which have led to various injuries. “Fox confirms. McConnell falls down Senate stairs after voting to confirm Scott Turner as HUD Secretary. Unclear about injuries. But Fox is told he appears to be ok. McConnell was helped up by Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK),” Fox News senior congressional correspondent Chad Pergram said. Fox confirms. USA TODAY also reported three additional incidents in which the senator fell in 2023. Two did not result in serious injuries, but one fall in March 2023 at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, D.C., sidelined him for roughly six weeks after suffering a concussion and broken ribs. McConnell, now in his seventh term representing Kentucky, recently stepped down from his post as the GOP’s Senate leader, a position he had held since 2007. He plans to remain in the Senate through the end of his term, which expires at the end of 2026. But he has not announced whether he will seek reelection. While McConnell no longer serves as the party’s Senate leader, he’s said he expects to still hold influence among Republican senators. Priorities for him include pushing for lawmakers to invest in national defense and to work with nations that are allies with the U.S. He currently serves as chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, the Rules Committee and the Agriculture Subcommittee on Food and Nutrition, Specialty Crops, Organics, and Research.

The Beatles & The Rolling Stones Win Grammys in 2025…Not A Good Thing?

By Ralph Greco, Jr. I don’t know how to “unpack,” as the kids say, the 2025 Grammy Awards. Suffering through maybe an hour of red-carpet walk-ins, I realized once again that I knew all too few modern-day artists. So, after catching some wacky outfits and enduring insipid interviews, I flipped off. Afterwards, I read how both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones each won Grammys last night. And as a fan of both, I figure I should be thrilled, right? Well… The Beatles single “Now and Then” won a BEST ROCK PERFORMANCE Grammy. This song came from an unfinished home demo ballad John Lennon recorded and wrote circa 1977. Considered as a third possible Beatles ‘reunion’ single for the band’s stellar 1995-96 retrospective The Beatles Anthology (one might recall that both “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love,” based on other Lennon demos, were released at that time). “Now and Then” wasn’t used because of production problems. With the advent of better technology, the two surviving Beatles, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, unearthed “Now and Then,” and as much used that old Lennon demo as overdubs of guitar tracks played by George Harrison way back from those original 1995 sessions. Even though it topped charts and now has won a Grammy, can we really say this is an actual Beatles tune when it has been put together like this? Talk amongst yourselves about how you feel about this. I know how I feel about this slight-of-ear. The Rolling Stones won BEST ROCK ALBUM for their 2023 release, Hackney Diamonds. While the album is somewhat of a return to form for The Stones (sans Charlie Watts), let’s not forget the group has won a scant number of Grammys in their 60-year plus career. I guess I should be happy about any recognition from the Grammys for our great classic bands and solo artists. But then again, how much legitimacy do the Grammys have any more (or had they ever)? Isn’t this seeming love coming a little late in the game by showcasing classic artists way past their prime? Perhaps, better late than never is the only way to sum it up.
