Murder-Enabling Villain on NBC's 'Law and Order' Runs 'Right-Wing News Website'

A new season of NBC's Law and Order premiered last night with an episode about a conservative journalist who helps his friend murder an innocent woman. The victim, Macy Harper (Antonia Timbol), is a district attorney who was prosecuting a conservative senator.  In the episode, "Catch and Kill," Harper is found brutally murdered in her home. Police initially arrest an illegal immigrant who lives in a hotel shelter nearby.  Of course, the illegal immigrant turns out to be innocent. He was wrongly suspected because he was wearing a sweatshirt that had been thrown in the trash outside Harper's home. He tells the police that he saw a white man with a beard yelling at the woman outside her house. Unsurprisingly for network television, every creepy guy from this point onward in the rest of the episode is a white man. White men must always be the perps on crime dramas nowadays. As the episode progresses, the audience learns that the biggest villains aren't just white guys. They are conservative or conservative-adjacent white guys. Jeff Sanders (Ari Blinder), the man who yelled at the victim outside her house, has posts on social media saying, "Harper sits in her liberal mansion on the Upper East Side thinking she can do whatever she wants. It's up to us to let her know that she's wrong." Sanders tells the police that the victim was "a puppet of the deep state who weaponized her position to take down [conservative] Senator Holt." He has a valid alibi though, so he is crossed off the list of suspects. Eventually, police discover that the victim's wealthy fiancée, Dylan Phipps (Bill Barrett), is the real killer. He murdered Harper because she was breaking up with him. Phipps had help from a "right-wing" journalist friend named Kenneth Lane (Michael Esper).  Phipps had abused Harper long before the night of the murder and his rage was caught on hotel cameras. Lane had bought the videos of abuse to protect Phipps. In many ways, the fictional video shown in the episode is similar to real video released this year of rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs attacking his girlfriend in a hotel hallway. Lane also provided Phipps with an alibi and helped him trick Harper into opening her door the night of the murder. As the episode makes clear throughout, Lane is arrogant and a liar. When assistant district attorneys Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) and Samantha Maroun (Odelya Halevi) stop by his office, he condescendingly refers to Maroun as "girl." Lane: Look, I already told the police what happened.  Maroun: No, you told them what you wanted them to believe. Lane: Well, your girl's got a bad attitude. Price: Excuse me? Lane: Sorry, that came out wrong. Maroun: No, I'm pretty sure that came out exactly the way you meant it.  Lane: [Sighs] I wish I could help. Macy was an amazing girl, but she and Dylan were happy. They were in love. Maroun: No, he was abusing her. Lane: What the hell are you talking about? Maroun: She was staying at a shelter for abused women. People don't go there because they're bored or to get a spa treatment.  Lane: I find that impossible to believe. In any event, I need to get back to work. So, if you don't mind-- - Maroun: One last question.  Why are you covering for this bastard? Even before the full extent of Lane's role in the murder is discovered, the episode infers he must be a bad man because he runs a popular right-wing media site. Maroun says, "Lane sells right-wing porn wrapped up as news."  Such nasty right-of-center characters are on brand for Law and Order. In real life, the Democratic presidential candidate's husband was recently accused of slapping a former girlfriend in public. Yet in Law and Order's fictional world, it is conservative men that women must fear. Left-wing Hollywood is a sea of filth and misogyny, but the entertainment industry is always projecting and accusing conservatives of being vile like them.

CNN Liberal Admits: Impact of Liz Cheney Endorsement Limited To 'One Lady in Wisconsin'

Q. How do you know that Liz Cheney's endorsement of Kamala Harris is entirely unlikely to shift the election in any detectable way? A. When a CNN liberal admits that its impact will likely be limited to "one lady in Wisconsin." Those were the surprising words of legal analyst Elliot Williams, who served for eight years in the Obama administration, on today's CNN This Morning. His remark earned a round of laughter on the panel, though former Biden aide Meghan Hays suggested that  "One lady might decide this entire election!" GOP strategist Matt Gorman was in rare form. Responding to Trump calling Cheney a "stupid war hawk," Gorman said, "I think that was the name of my college mascot."  He added "I'm not going to pretend that Liz Cheney's endorsement going to have an effect in this race, except make extremely online liberals feel good about a Republican for once" and granting a "media moment" -- because "Republicans attacking other Republicans is going to be catnip for the mainstream media. " Putting aside the wan hope that the one lady in Wisconsin could end up swinging the whole election to Harris, there was no serious suggestion on the panel that Cheney's endorsement would have any measurable impact on the election. But it does give media Democrats a reason for good cheer, joy and vibes and all that.  If an endorsement falls in the forest, and no voter cares about it . . .  Here's the transcript. CNN This Morning 10/4/24 6:01 am EDT DONALD TRUMP:  Liz Cheney is a stupid war hawk. All she wants to do is shoot missiles at people. . . . .  MATT GORMAN:  Yeah, I mean, stupid war hawk. I think that was my college mascot. But no look, Liz Cheney can vote for anyone she wants. I'm just, I'm not going to pretend that Liz Cheney's endorsement going to have an effect in this race, except make extremely online liberals feel good about a Republican for once.  But then, look, I also think that the Kamala Harris team is smart in this regard. They know that Republicans attacking other Republicans is going to be catnip for the mainstream media. So setting it in Ripon, where the Republican party was founded, and doing something, it's less about, I think actually the Liz Cheney thing, but trying to create a media moment that contrasts with Trump, I think, to Alex's point. . . .  ELLIOT WILLIAMS: There's nobody that votes against Kamala Harris because Liz Cheney is supporting her. But there might be people who could support her on account of Liz Cheney's support.  Now look, it's probably one lady in Wisconsin. It's not a wide swath -- MEGHAN HAYS: One lady might decide this entire election! WILLIAMS: Glad as I am at the notion that one lady is going to decide the entire election, however, you know, to your point, it's not going to be a major swing one way or another. GORMAN: I think they're all not equal, right? If Nikki Haley came out and supported Kamala Harris, which she didn't. But if she did, that would be a little different thing. If John McCain were still around, he was out there campaigning for Kamala Harris in Arizona, I would take folks' point here. But I think not all Republicans are built alike, right? So trotting out random former Trump staffers or Liz Cheney, I think the power of endorsement also comes when it's not as expected, right? Liz Cheney has very clearly been a critic of Trump for many years now. Whatever you think about it, the issues that really propel her have, I think, in large part, already been baked in, so it's less of a surprise.

STRANGE NEW FAKE RESPECT: Regime Media Now Embrace the Cheneys

STRANGE NEW FAKE RESPECT: Regime Media Now Embrace the Cheneys

The Regime Media have developed a Strange New Respect for conservative Republicans of a certain inclination, now that they can be used as rungs on a ladder that leads to Republicans voting for Vice President Kamala Harris. The most prominent of these, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, was prominently featured on the network evening newscasts. Watch as Norah O’Donnell of the CBS Evening News makes sure to create that permission structure: NORAH O’DONNELL: Tonight, the race for The White House runs through an unusual stop for the Democratic nominee. Actually, the birthplace of the Republican Party. That's Ripon, Wisconsin, where Vice President Kamala Harris appeared with former Congresswoman Liz Cheney. Remember, Cheney is a lifetime Republican and a former member of the January 6th Committee.  Correspondent Nancy Cordes made sure to echo the talking point about the rally being held at Ripon, Wisconsin, which houses the famous Little White Schoolhouse wherein the Republican Party was founded. NANCY CORDES: A big moment in tiny Ripon, Wisconsin. Former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, the daughter of a former vice president, making her first appearance with the Democratic nominee. The highlighting of Ripon seems to me to intend to convey conquest, not unlike American troops operating out of Saddam Hussein’s palaces during the Iraq War. Except that in this case, there is no conquest! This whole exercise is merely the Democrats’ unsavory attempt to woo one wing of the Party. This is the same media that, having nicknamed Vice President Dick Cheney “Darth Vader”, now want to turn his daughter Liz into a political Princess Leia. Or, at least, pretend to do so for purposes of political expediency. In keeping with the January 6th theme, Corden sprinkled some of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s filing into her report, as did NBC’s Gabe Gutierrez, who at least showed that not all Republicans are impressed by Cheney, and noted her primary blowout loss: GABE GUTIERREZ: Here in battleground Wisconsin, Trump supporters we spoke with are deeply skeptical of Cheney, who lost her GOP primary in a landslide.  Do you think that Liz Cheney speaks for the Republican party? VOTERS: No. Absolutely not. Over at ABC, Mary Bruce was Mary Brucing, as per her normal custom. Bruce most enthusiastically cast the Cheneys as GOP stalwarts, but made sure to spare time to note the endorsement of Kamala Harris by that other staunch conservative Bruce Springsteen (I kid): MARY BRUCE: Cheney has been on a mission to convince her fellow Republicans to put country over party, and back Harris. Stressing they share common values, like preserving international alliances like NATO. And argues when it comes to the economy, Trump's plan for across-the-board tariffs does not represent conservative fiscal values. Her father the former Vice President, a staunch Republican, has also endorsed Harris, saying, "There has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power, after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again."  And today, another notable endorsement. Bruce Springsteen, throwing his support to Harris, with a similar warning. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Donald Trump is the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime. His disdain for the sanctity of our Constitution, the sanctity of democracy, the sanctity of the rule of law, and the sanctity of the peaceful transfer of power should disqualify him from the Office of President ever again. It should be noted that Bruce and Cordes closed out their reports by citing the exact same dramatic point in Cheney’s speech. Make of that what you will: BRUCE: And Liz Cheney here just saying that Kamala Harris is now standing in the breach, saying she's trying to unite reasonable people from across the political spectrum.  CORDES: Here in Wisconsin, Cheney just said that Harris is standing in the breach at a critical time in this nation's history, and she urged conservatives to vote for her.  None of these reports featured anyone questioning how Cheney voting for individuals seeking to impose censorship of “disinformation” defends the Constitution. Those inconsistencies don’t matter. The Regime gets to display the Cheneys in a manner reminiscent of a hunter hanging a 12-pointer’s head above the fireplace.  There was also no one on to warn Cheney that the influence and desirability of this breed of conservative has a limited shelf life, as Adam Kinzinger discovered. Nothing matters but the conquest. Click “expand” to view the full transcripts of the aforementioned reports as aired on their respective network evening newscasts on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024: ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT 10/3/24 6:38 PM DAVID MUIR: Meantime, the developing headline involving Vice President Kamala Harris at this hour, campaigning in Wisconsin with former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. She and her father have both endorsed Harris. And tonight, Harris with another endorsement. What Bruce Springsteen is now saying about the stakes in this election. Mary Bruce tonight from Wisconsin. MARY BRUCE: Tonight, Vice President Kamala Harris in Ripon, Wisconsin- the town considered the birthplace of the Republican Party, standing shoulder to shoulder with former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney. CROWD: Thank you, Liz! LIZ CHENEY: Thank you. BRUCE: Cheney, daughter of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney, was a three-term congresswoman, and the third-ranking Republican in the House, before going on to chair the January 6th Committee. Endorsing Harris, she declared Donald Trump a danger to democracy. CHENEY: I know that the most conservative of conservative values is fidelity to our Constitution. I tell you, I have never voted for a Democrat, but this year, I am proudly casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. BRUCE: Cheney has been on a mission to convince her fellow Republicans to put country over party, and back Harris. BRUCE: And Liz Cheney here just saying that Kamala Harris is now standing in the breach, saying she's trying to unite reasonable people from across the political spectrum. It comes as the Harris campaign is now upping its outreach to GOP voters, with Republican supporters holding events this week in every key battleground state. David? MUIR: Mary Bruce, with Vice President Kamala Harris campaigning tonight with Liz Cheney there in Wisconsin. Mary, thank you. CBS EVENING NEWS 10/3/24 6:33 PM NORAH O’DONNELL: Tonight, the race for The White House runs through an unusual stop for the Democratic nominee. Actually, the birthplace of the Republican Party. That's Ripon, Wisconsin, where Vice President Kamala Harris appeared with former Congresswoman Liz Cheney. Remember, Cheney is a lifetime Republican and a former member of the January 6th Committee. At the same time, there was a campaign surprise from former First Lady Melania Trump, signaling her support for abortion rights, in spite of her husband boasting many times he probably overturned Roe vs. Wade. We get more now from CBS's Nancy Cordes. NANCY CORDES: A big moment in tiny Ripon, Wisconsin. Former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, the daughter of a former vice president, making her first appearance with the Democratic nominee. LIZ CHENEY: But I will be voting for Kamala Harris. CORDES: Cheney first announced her support last month, but she has been a critic of former President Donald Trump for years. And was vice chair of the January 6th Committee, which examined Trump's role in the Capitol insurrection. LIZ CHENEY: He is unfit for any office. CORDES: The Harris campaign has been working to highlight the growing list of Republicans who now oppose Trump. MIKE PENCE: I cannot in good conscience endorse Donald Trump this year. CORDES: Those defections rattled Steven Michek, a former Wisconsin sheriff who is switching to Harris after voting for Trump in 2016. STEVEN MICHEK: All of the changes in the administrative staff, just constant turnover of people, the just- unusual things of having all of your children employed in The White House was like, I would not do that in the Sheriff's Office. CORDES: In a court filing released yesterday, Special Counsel Jack Smith alleged that Trump ignored threats to his VP’s life during the Capitol Riot, allegedly telling an aide, "So what?" DONALD TRUMP: We won. We won. We did. It was a rigged election. CORDES: In Saginaw, Michigan today, Trump repeated his false claims about 2020 and warned of an apocalypse if Harris wins next month. TRUMP: Instead of a Golden Age, America will instead be plunged into a dark age. Your family finances will be permanently destroyed. CORDES: He did not address the new comments from his wife, Melania, who unexpectedly came out in favor of abortion rights in a video promoting her upcoming book. MELANIA TRUMP: There is no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right. CORDES: In an interview after the speech, Trump said he actually had spoken to his wife beforehand and told her she should share what was in her heart, even if they disagree. Here in Wisconsin, Cheney just said that Harris is standing in the breach at a critical time in this nation's history, and she urged conservatives to vote for her. Norah. O’DONNELL: So interesting that Melania Trump is saying that now. Nancy Cordes, thank you so much. NBC NIGHTLY NEWS 10/3/24 6:39 PM LESTER HOLT: Now to the race for president with former President Trump in- economy in the battleground Michigan state today. Vice President Harris is in Wisconsin with a prominent Republican, former congresswoman Liz Cheney. Here is Gabe Gutierrez. GABE GUTIERREZ: She was once one of the most conservative members of Congress, but tonight, Liz Cheney is standing alongside Vice President Harris. LIZ CHENEY: This year I am proudly casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. GUTIERREZ: The vice president campaigning today in Ripon, Wisconsin, the birthplace of the Republican Party back in 1854. KAMALA HARRIS: The former president is really becoming quite desperate, and perhaps it's because he wants to distract from the fact that he has offered no plan for the American people. GUTIERREZ: Meanwhile, former President Trump slamming yesterday's release by a judge of new evidence from Special Counsel Jack Smith in the now-delayed January 6th case, including Trump allegedly responding "So what" to reports Mike Pence was in danger. DONALD TRUMP: This was a weaponization of government, and that's why it was released 30 days before the election. And there’s nothing new in there. GUTIERREZ: Trump today in battleground Michigan, blaming Harris for the ongoing port strike that is threatening to raise prices. TRUMP: Over the past four years, Kamala Harris has unleashed nothing but chaos and suffering for American labor with historic inflation, she’s made life excruciating for the blue collar workers. GUTIERREZ: Here in battleground Wisconsin, Trump supporters we spoke with are deeply skeptical of Cheney, who lost her GOP primary in a landslide.  Do you think that Liz Cheney speaks for the Republican party? VOTERS: No. Absolutely not. GUTIERREZ: But Jerry Eiler, who once voted for Trump, now backs Harris. Did Donald Trump drive you away from the Republican Party? JERRY EILER: Absolutely. I'm totally disillusioned with the way the MAGA group has gone and all the people who stand there and, like, pretend his lies are truth. GUTIERREZ: While Harris has received the most support from organized labor, earlier today the International Association of Fire Fighters voted not to endorse any candidate. That’s seen as a blow to Harris, just weeks after the Teamsters union did the same, Lester. HOLT: All right. Gabe, thanks very much.
