After seven statewide wins in the past two years and not a single loss, pro-abortion activists are advancing constitutional amendments in another 13 states this year to block elected representatives from regulating abortion in any way. The pro-abortion activists are deploying the same winning strategy as last cycle: highlighting medical professionals who cast abortion as essential health care. But for thousands of doctors like me, the facts say something different. As a board-certified OB/GYN, I am guided by evidence-based medicine and a commitment never to use death as a therapy for my patients. Given the overwhelming scientific consensus that life begins at fertilization, I am tasked with the care of not one but two patients when I see a pregnant woman at the hospital. Intentionally ending the life of my fetal patient would violate my ethical responsibility, not just to the child but to my maternal patient by subjecting her to an elective procedure with potentially grave health risks. Proponents of the constitutional amendments—those approved for ballots in Florida and Maryland and those advancing in at least 10 other states—spread fear that women will die because of not being able to receive lifesaving care, ignoring the fact that even the most restrictive state laws already provide exceptions in such cases. Pro-abortion activists use this as a pretense to ban abortion regulations of any type, even those supported by a vast majority of the public, such as requiring abortion facilities to maintain the same health and hygiene standards as other medical facilities. Pro-life physicians are preparing to counter the misleading medicalization of induced abortion. We highlight our own experiences treating patients using safer alternatives, such as the time I sat on a patient’s bed discussing with her the need to induce labor very early in pregnancy, even though we knew the baby would not survive. As pro-life physicians, we’re also highlighting how often we’ve been able to care for women in difficult situations in ways that respected not only their lives, but the lives of their babies as well. The result: healthy mom and healthy child.  This is consistent with how more than 90% of OB/GYNs in America practice. The physicians in our coalition will share the potential harms of induced abortion and the importance of ensuring that patients understand and consent to the risks. The chance of harm increases the later in a pregnancy the abortion occurs. Importantly, our physicians will attest to the fact that increased restrictions on abortions correlate with improved maternal mortality. The state of South Dakota, for example, has seen death rates for mothers decrease since passing a law to prevent all abortions except to save the mother’s life. Abortion advocates falsely appeal to the masses by claiming that proposed constitutional amendments would ban restrictions on abortion only up to the point of fetal viability. They conceal the fact that the measures also protect abortions up to the baby’s due date as long as a health care professional attests that it is in the health interests of the patient—which includes, importantly, the patient’s mental health. This mental health carve-out is a favorite of pro-abortion advocates because it effectively provides a blank check for unlimited abortions. That’s why we’ll inform voters that abortion takes a devastating toll on mental and emotional health, including a greatly increased risk of suicide and alcohol and drug abuse. Getting these messages out isn’t easy. Doctors who speak out in favor of life do so at great personal and professional risk, as much of the medical establishment is controlled by pro-abortion ideology. Two years ago, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology notified physicians that they could lose board certification if they spread “misinformation” about “essential reproductive health care”—claiming the right for itself to determine what constitutes “misinformation.” Nonetheless, thousands of physicians are joining our effort. The organization I lead, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, or AAPLOG, is launching a new 501(c)4 nonprofit this week to enable us to organize these political fights. We’re learning our lessons from 2022 and 2023. We saw the so-called Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Health run scaled-up advertisements via Facebook ahead of pro-abortion activists’ victory last November. We’re countering similar efforts this year with our own statewide physician coalitions in Florida, South Dakota, and Arizona, which we’re arming with organizing muscle, central messaging, media training, and support via digital and media campaigns. For the pro-life movement, the medicalization of these ballot measures has been our Achilles heel. Through fearmongering, our opponents have convinced voters that abortion is a necessary and harmless medical procedure. They have muscled through constitutional amendments that would erase prior state legislative wins and block duly elected representatives from passing sensible abortion protections. We are prepared to counter fear with facts this year, leveraging the expertise of thousands of physicians who understand the medical perils of unregulated induced abortion. This Wednesday, America will celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday for the fourth time. Yet the holiday, born out of bipartisanship, is becoming more divisive each year. The Left has coopted Juneteenth to push for radical racial policies such as reparations and exclude most Americans from its celebration. As a result, many conservatives now oppose the federal holiday. But in the eyes of this Texas historian, it’s a mistake to abandon a unifying national holiday to the manipulations of the Left. We should instead do what conservatives are best at: Get back to the roots. Until the past four years, Juneteenth was an uncontroversial celebration of American freedom and the end of slavery in Texas. The holiday commemorates the day Union Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, informing Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the state’s slaves, and marking the end of slavery under the Confederacy. The next year, in 1866, residents of Galveston began celebrating “Jubilee Day,” which eventually became what we know as Juneteenth. In 1979, Al Edwards, a Democratic state representative from Houston, sponsored legislation to make Juneteenth a paid state holiday. Texas Gov. Bill Clements, a Republican, signed the bill into law, and the holiday was born. The national acceptance of Juneteenth also began in a bipartisan fashion. President Donald Trump was the first president to call for its adoption as a federal holiday in 2020, although it took a year for Congress to act. When it did, the bill passed the Senate with unanimous consent and 415-14 in the House. With that kind of history, one would expect conservatives, even those wary of the pitfalls of identity politics like me, to embrace Juneteenth’s consistency with the principles enshrined in our founding documents. The holiday celebrates what President Abraham Lincoln called “a new birth of freedom” for America. It celebrates the completion of the work of July 4, 1776—the extension of liberty to all Americans. It also commemorates the untold numbers of young men who died in the war fighting for that freedom. If it’s good enough for Texas, why are some conservatives beginning to oppose the holiday? Unfortunately, the answer lies mostly on the left. The Left has worked hard to coopt the holiday and use it as a tool to divide their countrymen and to replace the real Independence Day. It began on the first federal Juneteenth, when Democratic leaders tied the 156-year-old holiday to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Then, the Left named the national holiday “Juneteenth National Independence Day,” setting it up in opposition to July 4. What was once a broadly accepted state holiday celebrating a significant moment in Texas history became a pawn in the national game of identity politics and subject to the division of the 24-hour news cycle. The Guardian published a story calling Juneteenth “the real Independence Day”—a slap in the face to both our Founders and all Americans who celebrate July 4. Activists have called for Juneteenth to be used to explore “racial trauma” and enact reparations. Under these circumstances, it is no surprise that Americans are souring on Juneteenth. What they hear from the media and elected leaders on Juneteenth is a self-righteous, anti-American drumbeat of criticism and division. Most Americans are excluded from the celebration, as is anyone who believes in America’s founding or doesn’t buy the narrative that America is “systemically racist” today. But it’s not too late to save the holiday from those who would abuse it. Here’s one way: Celebrate it as the first day of a two-week national celebration of independence and freedom, stretching from June 19 to July 4. We should remember the wars in which Americans fought and died to defend our shared heritage of liberty and expand it to all Americans. We should commemorate the armies of young patriots— black and white—who fought wars against tyrannical elites, whether it was the English crown or the plantation owner. We should consider how elites today are trying to take away the very freedoms that were secured on June 19 and July 4 through the blood of our forefathers and work with our neighbors to protect our liberties. That’s the true spirit of Juneteenth. It’s a day of building up our country, not tearing it down. We have an opportunity to reject racial divisions and the revisionist history of the ivory tower.
