Now is the best time to observe Mars in 2025. Mars from 2014. Credit: Paul Stewart. January has an amazing parade of evening planets, well worth braving the cold for. We have brilliant Venus, high to the west after sunset, reaching greatest elongation on January 10th. Fainter Saturn sits just above Venus as the two meet on January 19th. Meanwhile, Jupiter dominates the eastern sky, fresh off of opposition in December. But stay awake just a bit longer after dusk, and you can see Mars rising in the east. As a special treat, observers in most of North America will also see the nearly Full Moon pass in front of Mars Monday night. Mars Opposition 2025 This works because Mars reaches opposition in January 2025, rising ‘opposite’ to the setting Sun. Think of the Red Planet as a slower runner on the outside track of the solar system, with the faster Earth approaching on the inside lane. This also marks the center season to observe Mars. As Earth approaches the Red Planet, the apparent disk swells in the view of a telescope from a tiny dot to a larger globe where features can be discerned. Dates to watch for involving Mars in 2025 include: -Sunday, January 12th: Mars is closest to the Earth at 0.642 AU (96 million kilometers) distant; -Wednesday, January 15th: Mars is brightest, shining at magnitude -1.5 -Thursday, January 16th: The planet Mars reaches opposition for 2025 -Monday, February 10th: Mars reaches its northernmost point at declination 26 degrees, 14’ north -Wednesday, April 16th: Mars reaches aphelion at 1.6 AU from the Sun -Monday, April 21st: Reaches eastern quadrature, 90 degrees from the Sun. This serves as a prelude to checking out all naked eye planets in the evening sky in 2025, once Mercury joins the evening scene in late March. Mars and Jupiter, rising to the east at dusk. Credit: Stellarium. Mars Spends late January near Pollux, and then heads to Cancer and transits the open cluster Messier 44 on May 4th. On June 16th the planet passes just over a degree from Regulus, and the planet loiters in the evening for the remainder of 2025, until reaching solar conjunction on January 9th, 2026. An Aphelion Opposition Not all oppositions are created equal. This is because the orbits of both the Earth and Mars are elliptical, but its mainly the fault of the Red Planet: the planet can vary from 207 million kilometers from the Sun at perihelion, to 249 million kilometers away at aphelion. Oppositions for Mars occur every 26 months on average, roughly once every other calendar year. Perihelic oppositions are favorable with Mars reaching an apparent size of 25” across, while an opposition near aphelion sees the planet only reaching a measly 14” across. Moreover, these trend in cycles. 2003 saw an historic near-perihelion apparition of Mars, which then diminished on every pass to a paltry aphelion appearance in 2012. In 2025, we’re still headed towards unfavorable aphelic passes. Earth just reached perihelion in early January—while Mars reaches aphelion in mid-April. 2027 sees the nadir of the 15 year cycle, while 2033 sees us reaching favorable oppositions once again. At its maximum, Mars will appear 15” across in 2025. The planet reaches -1.5 magnitude at opposition this year, rivaling nearby Jupiter in brightness. Mars reappears from behind the Moon Monday night. Credit Stellarium. The ‘Great North American Occultation’ North American observers are in for a treat on the night of January 13th when the near Full Moon actually occults (passes in front of) Mars. This is the best lunar-planetary occultation for the region for 2025. This occurs just five hours after Full, and two days prior to opposition. The Moon will take about 30 seconds to fully cover and then later reveal the Red Planet, in what promises to be a fine event. The visiblity footprint for Monday night’s occultation. Credit: Occult 4.2 Note that, contrary to the old internet meme, Mars will not appear ‘as large as a Full Moon’ on this—or any other—year. This does, however, give you the rare chance to see the planet in the daytime just before sunset or immediately after sunrise on January 13-14th, using the nearby Full Moon as a guide. The Moon occults Mars three more times in 2025: Once for northern Asia and Scandinavia on February 9th, again for the eastern Pacific and the west coast of South America on June 30th, and one last time for the remote Antarctic on July 28th. Observing Mars Near Opposition It’s fascinating to examine Mars near opposition… it’s the one planet that presents an actual surface to explore at the eyepiece. The white northern polar cap (currently tipped into view) is the most prominent feature. Settling in, darker swathes of terrain such as Syrtis Major may become apparent. Fun fact: if you’re watching Mars at the same time every evening, you’re seeing nearly the same swatch of the planet turned Earthward, just rotated slightly in longitude from one night to the next. This happens because Mars rotates somewhat slower than the Earth, once every 24 hours and 38 minutes. The ever-present possibility of a global dust storms can always make opposition season interesting. You can actually notice that something is afoot on Mars in terms of global dust storms, simply by noting the color of the planet, as a sickly yellow versus the healthy traditional red. Finding Phobos and Deimos Phobos and Deimos in the glare of Mars. Credit: Shahrin Ahmad. Opposition is also a good time to try and cross the Martian moons of Phobos and Deimos off of your observing ‘life list.’ Discovered by astronomer Asaph Hall using the U.S. Naval Observatory’s then-new 26” refractor in 1877, the faint moons never stray far from dazzling Mars. +11.5th magnitude Phobos orbits the planet once every 7.7 hours and reaches a max separation of 14”, while outer 12.4th magnitude Deimos orbits once every 30.3 hours and reaches 45” away. Use an occulting bar eyepiece or nudge the planet just out of view to help you in your quest. Use a planetarium program such as Stellarium to see if a moon is currently visible. The U.S. Naval Observatory refractor. USNO/Public Domain Image Rovers on Mars actually catch sight of the Martian moons on occasion, including this fine transit of Phobos in front of the Sun from late 2024: These transits actually help to refine the orbits of the two moons. If skies are clear, be sure to check out Mars while you can, and don’t miss the best occultation of the year. Back on December 29, 2024, former President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100. The former president was entered into hospice care back in February of 2023, and was at his home surrounded by loved ones for many of his final days. Carter made a rare public appearance when he attended his late wife’s funeral service in November of 2023 at the Glenn Memorial Church at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were married for 77 years, which is the longest of any first couple in the history of the country. Though Carter only served one term that ran from the late '70s to the early '80s, he and his wife were known for the great humanitarian work they did long after his time in office. Many current and former politicians were in attendance, including all living former first ladies, as well as Bill Clinton, current President Joe Biden, and Donald Trump and his wife Melania, but the couple that has really turned heads being there is Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. Though it might seem strange that the two country stars would be there to pay their respects, it makes more sense when you know that Brooks and Yearwood were close acquaintances with the Carters. (@AZ_Brittney) November 28, 2023 Considering that they were so close, it should then come as no surprise that Brooks and Yearwood performed a song in honor of Jimmy Carter at his service - just as they did for Rosalynn Carter during her funeral service. However, the song choice of John Lennon’s “Imagine” has puzzled some online, considering the opening line of the song is “imagine there’s no heaven,” and that’s not exactly comforting to hear at funeral. The song is powerful, and probably one of the most recognizable songs in the world, but for a funeral? It admittedly comes off as a strange selection. Even Lennon himself said the song essentially reflected the ideology (not so much the practice) of the Communist movement at the time, even though he wasn’t a communist. Jimmy Carter is often considered the first post-Cold War president, with the Cold War being viewed from an American perspective as anti-communist (the U.S. actively tried to stop the spread of the Communist Party). Lennon once said: "'Imagine', which says, 'Imagine that there was no more religion, no more country, no more politics,' is virtually The Communist Manifesto, even though I'm not particularly a Communist and I do not belong to any movement." Like any piece of art, people will interpret the song however they like, though many have argued that “Imagine” has often been misused and misunderstood in moments of remembrance, and even at funerals. However, this quote from Jimmy Carter about the song might reveal why it was chosen for this moment, and could even lead one to assume that it might’ve been requested by the Carter family: “In many countries around the world — my wife and I have visited about 125 countries — you hear John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ used almost equally with national anthems. There is no real Communist state in the world; you must realize that." Regardless of the song’s meaning, or why it was chosen, the performance by Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood was a touching moment in the proceedings in honor of the former first lady. I think we've all heard way more than we wanted to about the breakup between country star Zach Bryan  and Brianna LaPaglia, AKA Brianna Chickenfry. Brianna has aired out a lot of it through her podcast BFF's on Barstool Sports, but Zach has been pretty much radio silent in terms of his side of the story, other than sharing one post on his Instagram stories when they broke up at the end of last year stating that the relationship was over. Since then, fans online, especially over on TikTok, have been speculating that Zach might have a new girlfriend, after seeing him post with different girls (friends of his) over the last couple weeks. For some reason, people are really enamored with his dating life, and he let "internet sleuths" have it over on his Instagram stories today. He shared a series of posts calling them out for "harassing" his friends, saying that they are bullying them and even going so far as to send them death threats: "Also, all you f*****n' weird couch warriors attacking and belittling my friends on the internet because you're assuming I have a girlfriend are weird as hell and should be studied for science. Everyone wonders why I quit touring and don't want to be attached to music anymore, meanwhile you're calling my friends ugly and harassing them? I'm not asking for sympathy but going for my -friends- is so low and so messed up? Apparently I've had four different girlfriends in like two weeks, meanwhile my friends and me are just laughing and hanging out like we always have. I don't have a girlfriend and don't plan on having a girlfriend, however I do have normal friends that I love very much and would go to the ends of the Earth for. Go give your time and attention to the literal city burning down and stop being so sad and fickle and childish through the screens. Last thing I'll say on his. Insane I even have to. You do not know me. You never will know me. Stop acting like you do." And that's just the start of it... He followed it up by saying that he loses "faith in humanity" every single day because of what he sees online, and he reiterated that he wants his friends to be life alone. Zach says it's getting harder for him to make music because of how much of a spotlight it has put on his personal life: "I am allowed to have love, laughter and good people in my life. No matter how bad of a person you think I am, go ahead and come for me. I can take all the hatred because I am not a child. But do not come for my friends who do nothing but love and care for me. Everyone wants you to have fun and make great music, but you guys are making it really hard to do that with my friends getting insulted and death threats every day. Every day, I lose a little more faith in humanity and every day I get closer to never being in the public's eye ever again which is incredibly sad because I truly do really love humans and being happy and joking around and laughing a lot." He continued, saying he's worked hard in life, but says people online need to "stop being such sad and fat fingered internet sleuths" to his friends: "I love my life. I have worked REALLY hard for it. Whether you think I deserve it or not. Whether you think I suck or not. Stop being such sad and fat fingered internet sleuths to my friends. We're all humans and I'm so tired of people thinking social media is a way to have moral high ground on people THEY'VE never met? Guess people aren't humans anymore since they can hide behind screens? Weird a**holes man. Okay I'm done." I get the frustration in a lot of ways, but damn... he really didn't hold back: Zach followed it up by asking people to stop giving him advice on anything because of what he's been through in terms of losing his mom and being in war zones (he was formerly in the Navy for seven years): "Ahh, one more thing: I don't need people telling me to hang in there, sympathizing with me, or giving me advice on how to handle something or things they've never coped with. I lost my mother, I've been in war zones, and I've battled this whole fame thing for five years. Respectfully, I don't need your unsolicited advice. I am a grown man. I promise I can get through some little bullies on the internet hahaha." I do sympathize with all of that, I really do because people shouldn't be dragging his friends into it who probably want nothing to do with the fame aspect, but explaining all of it to random people online who clearly do not care already is probably not going to do anything... The next story was more simple in its message: "I am so terrifyingly unfazed by the fake sh*t people say about me online but coming for people I love and care for is my line and my final straw. Okay have a good day everyone, love you, miss you." He ended it by saying he's "hopping off for a bit," though last I checked there was a new Instagram story posted that was unrelated to all of these other messages: "I've said what I need to say. My chest is still out and heads are still held high. Hopping off for a bit. Seeee ya." Zach deactivating his social media is nothing new, but it sounds like a great idea for him to probably take an extended break from it and not interact online at all. It's not for everyone, and a lot of artists don't even touch their own social media, especially someone at Zach's level, for this very reason. I'm sure people looking at everything you do under a microscope is annoying at best, and fame certainly isn't for everyone, so hopefully Zach can take a step back and reevaluate his career and the way he handles all aspects of it going forward because clearly it's not working for him right now.

President-elect Donald Trump and the former president Barack Obama were seen engaging in a rare friendly conversation Thursday at the funeral of the former President Jimmy Carter. The two men, whose political careers have often seen them sharply opposed, were filmed talking and exchanging chuckles before the beginning of the ceremony. Trump also shook hands with Mike Pence in what is being reported as the first time the men have seen each other since January 2021, after the events of January 6 caused a rift between Trump and his former vice president. The former president George W. Bush was also in attendance, along with a host of other political and social notables, including president Joe Biden, who delivered the eulogy. All four of the currently living presidents attended the funeral for Carter, who was the longest-lived president of the United States. After serving as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, Carter passed away on December 29, 2024 at the age of 100.
