Speaker Johnson Removes Mike Turner As House Intel Committee Chairman

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) removed House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH) from his role on Wednesday just several days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Johnson told reporters that he made the decision because it was a new Congress and Republicans needed some “fresh horses in some of these places, but I’m a Mike Turner fan.” “He’s done a great job. He performed valiantly in a difficult time under difficult circumstances,” Johnson said. “So I have nothing but positive things to say about my friend.” When asked if Trump had any role in the decision, Johnson said that it was not Trump’s decision, it was his. “This is a House decision. This is no slight whatsoever to our outgoing chairman,” he said. “He did a great job, but we just, the intelligence community and everything related to HPSCI, it needs a fresh start and that’s what this is about, nothing else. So I have nothing negative say about Mike Turner at all. He’s a good man, a good colleague. I respect his work.” He added that Turner would continue to be his appointee for everything involving NATO. The threat from our adversaries is real and requires serious deliberations.” “As a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, I have been and will continue to be a strong advocate for the military and our national defense,” he added. “My work to expand missions and capabilities at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base continues. EXCLUSIVE: Doug Burgum To Lay Out How American Energy Dominance Can Unlock ‘World Peace’

Former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will lay out his vision for bringing on a new era of American energy dominance in the opening remarks of his Thursday morning confirmation hearing, according to a copy of his prepared remarks obtained by The Daily Wire. Burgum is President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to serve as the next secretary of the Department of the Interior. During his nomination hearing on Thursday, Burgum is expected to tell senators that energy dominance can be America’s “big stick” on the world stage. After laying out his background and experience, Burgum will endorse a “big stick” approach to energy and production, a reference to former President Theodore Roosevelt’s advice to “speak softly and carry a big stick.” “When energy production is restricted in America, it doesn’t reduce demand, it just shifts production to countries like Russia, Venezuela, and Iran – whose autocratic leaders don’t care about the environment,” Burgum will say. “In our time, President Trump’s Energy Dominance can be America’s ‘big stick’ that is leveraged to achieve historic prosperity and world peace. The Department of the Interior – in cooperation with U.S. Congress, this committee, and the states – will play a pivotal role in achieving the outcomes to make the world safer and America even better for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come,” Burgum will say. The former North Dakota governor will recount his life growing up in a small town in North Dakota to running a global company before he served in public office for the first time in 2016 as his state’s governor. “Growing up I worked at our family’s grain elevator. Every job I had through college was one that required showering at the end of the day — not the beginning. This included paying my way through North Dakota State University by working as a chimney sweep,” he will say. Burgum will highlight his experience working to manage North Dakota’s lands and natural resources while improving relations with its tribes. “In North Dakota, we created a prosperous economy by sustainably developing our natural resources with respect for our land and wildlife while having among the cleanest air and water in the country. During our tenure, North Dakota experienced among the lowest unemployment in the nation and top real GDP growth. Demographically, we went from one of the oldest states to the youngest. And we attracted record levels of talent and investment capital,” Burgum will say. Iran’s President Denies Country Has Repeatedly Tried To Kill Trump

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed in an interview this week that the Islamic regime, which is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, has “never” tried to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. Pezeshkian’s claims come despite Iran having attempted at least twice to assassinate Trump last year — both of which were foiled by federal law enforcement. He made the remarks during an NBC News interview with Lester Holt, who traveled to Tehran for the interview. “This is another one of those schemes that Israel and other countries are designing to promote Iranophobia,” Pezeshkian claimed. “Iran has never attempted to nor does it plan to assassinate anyone. At least as far as I know.” When asked if there was ever a plan to assassinate Trump, Pezeshkian claimed: “None whatsoever.” WATCH: The U.S. Department of Justice unsealed an indictment in November against multiple individuals who were involved in plots to murder an Iranian dissident, two Jewish Americans, and Trump on U.S. soil. “There are few actors in the world that pose as grave a threat to the national security of the United States as does Iran,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland. “The Justice Department has charged an asset of the Iranian regime who was tasked by the regime to direct a network of criminal associates to further Iran’s assassination plots against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump.” CELEBRATE #47 WITH 47% OFF DAILYWIRE+ MEMBERSHIPS + A FREE $20 GIFT Prosecutors indicted Farhad Shakeri, 51, of Iran, on multiple charges, including murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, money laundering conspiracy, conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, and conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and sanctions against the Government of Iran. Shakeri remains at large and is believed to be inside Iran. If convicted on all counts, he could face 100 years in prison. “Shakeri is an [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] asset residing in Tehran, Iran,” prosecutors said. “Shakeri immigrated to the United States as a child and was deported in or about 2008 after serving 14 years in prison for a robbery conviction. In recent months, Shakeri has used a network of criminal associates he met in prison in the United States to supply the IRGC with operatives to conduct surveillance and assassinations of IRGC targets.” Prosecutors said that he hired two individuals to kill the Iranian dissident and the two Jewish Americans. However, with the elections approaching, the IRGC told Shakeri to pause his efforts to kill the dissident and the two Jewish Americans because they wanted him to focus on killing Trump. “SHAKERI indicated to IRGC Official-1 that this would cost a ‘huge’ amount of money,” the indictment said. “In response, IRGC Official-1 said that ‘we have already spent a lot of money [s]o the money’s not an issue,’ which SHAKERI understood to mean that the IRGC previously had spent a significant sum of money on efforts to murder Victim-4 and was willing to continue spending a lot of money in its attempt to procure Victim-4’s assassination.” During a meeting in October with the IRGC official, Shakeri was instructed to have a plan in place to assassinate Trump within a week and that if he could not do it, Iran would put the plan on hold because they believed Trump “would lose the election and, afterward, it would be easier to assassinate” him after losing. Federal authorities arrested Carlisle Rivera, also known as Pop, 49, of Brooklyn, New York; and Jonathon Loadholt, 36, of Staten Island, New York, for their alleged involvement in the plots to murder the Iranian dissident and the two Jewish Americans. “The charges announced today expose Iran’s continued brazen attempts to target U.S. citizens, including President-elect Donald Trump, other government leaders and dissidents who criticize the regime in Tehran,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray. “The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — a designated foreign terrorist organization — has been conspiring with criminals and hitmen to target and gun down Americans on U.S. soil and that simply won’t be tolerated.” The other attempt involved a Pakistani national who FBI Director Christopher Wray said had “close ties to Iran” and was allegedly sent to the U.S. to assassinate Trump. According to court documents, in April 2024, Asif Merchant, 46, who revealed he has a wife and children in both Iran and Pakistan, came to the U.S. after spending time in Iran. He contacted someone about his alleged scheme; that person, who became a confidential source (CS), then contacted the FBI. In early June in New York, Merchant met the CS and outlined his alleged plot to commit a series of assassinations in the U.S. “Merchant explained that his plot involved multiple criminal schemes: (1) stealing documents or USB drives from a target’s home; (2) planning a protest; and (3) killing a politician or government official,” the Department of Justice stated. “Merchant stated that the assassination would occur after he left the United States and he would communicate with the CS from overseas using code words. The CS asked whether Merchant had spoken to the unidentified ‘party’ back home with whom Merchant was working. Merchant responded that he had and that the party back home told him to ‘finalize’ the plan and leave the United States.” On June 21, Merchant met with undercover U.S. law enforcement officers in New York, giving them $5,000 in advance. “After Merchant paid the $5,000 to the UCs, one of the UCs stated, ‘now we’re bonded,’ to which Merchant responded ‘yes.’ The UC then stated ‘Now we know we’re going forward. We’re doing this,’ to which Merchant responded ‘Yes, absolutely,’” the DOJ stated. Merchant was arrested on July 12, 2024, the day he planned to leave the country.

Fact-Checking 3 Claims in Biden’s Farewell Address

President Joe Biden delivered his farewell address to the nation on Wednesday night. In his speech, Biden touted his record on the economy and his support for “democracy.”   “The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France after our Civil War, like the very idea of America, it was built not by one person, but by many people, from every background, and from around the world,” Biden said. The outgoing president blasted the “wealthy” and “oligarchs” who he said are corrupting politics. He also said that “social media is giving up on fact-checking,” and that Americans are being inundated with misinformation. Here is a fact check of some of Biden’s factual claims in his speech. Job Creation Biden took credit for producing the greatest amount of job creation for any president in one term. He said that his administration created “nearly 17 million new jobs, more than any other single administration.” However, that statistic is extremely misleading since most of the job creation happened after mass job losses during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Even Politico has noted that the “U.S. economy didn’t recover all the jobs lost during Covid until 2022.” A smaller percentage of Americans are working today than there were working when Biden took office. Heritage Foundation economic and labor policy analyst Rachel Greszler wrote in August that “the unemployment rate alone understates rising non-employment in the United States.” “Over the past year, the employment-to-population ratio of people ages 16 and older fell from 60.4 to 60.0,” she wrote. “That’s equivalent to 934,000 fewer people working today than just a year ago. And compared to 2020, just prior to the pandemic, there are 2.9 million fewer people working.” There have also been issues in the administration’s reporting of job growth numbers. In September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics made a massive correction to its March jobs report and essentially admitted that 818,000 fewer jobs had been created than initially reported. Violent Crime After touting the passage of a gun control law under his administration, Biden said that he’s brought violent crime down to a 50-year low. “I passed the most significant gun safety law in 30 years and brought violent crime to a 50-year low,” he said. Biden, touting his accomplishments, claims that his administration has brought violent crime to "a 50 year low." pic.twitter.com/yyqjx8RnT8— TheBlaze (@theblaze) January 16, 2025 But violent crime surged under Biden and remains high despite some misleading statistics suggesting a crime decrease. According to a September report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the “total instances of reported violent crimes increased from 5.6 per 1,000 individuals aged 12 and over in 2020, when [President Donald] Trump was still in office, to 8.7 per 1,000 in 2023.” Additionally, the study found that there were “9.8 instances of violent crime per 1,000 people aged 12 and over in 2022, which marks the highest rate during the 2020-2023 era. The New York Post reported in August that “between 2016 and 2020, violent crime fell by 17% under Trump — and soared by 43% under Biden between 2020 and 2022. Additionally, there are now problems with the recording of crime statistics. Not only are many crimes going unreported, but many city police departments haven’t been reporting complete crime data to the FBI since the system changed in 2021. Hostage Deal “After eight months of nonstop negotiation by my administration, a ceasefire and a hostage deal has been reached by Israel and Hamas,” Biden said. He claimed that the deal struck between Israel and Hamas this week was conducted and developed by his “team.” Joe Biden just took the sole credit for achieving the hostage release deal. The Israeli Prime Minister and Biden’s own State Department both recognized how Trump’s team had major impact on getting it done.Joe Biden is going out the same way he got started, by lying. pic.twitter.com/szcDyCJUyu— Media Lies (@MediasLies) January 16, 2025 However, according to Arab officials, and even the Biden administration itself, this deal was largely hashed out by the incoming Trump administration. The New York Post reported that officials in the Biden administration gave credit to Trump in facilitating the deal between Israel and Hamas. “Multiple insiders and officials in both Israel and the US told The Post that it was Trump’s impending inauguration — combined with the efforts of his Middle East special envoy, Steve Witkoff, that finally solved a problem that had proved intractable for President Biden and his team,” the New York Post reported. According to Reuters, “Witkoff was able to pressure Netanyahu into accepting the deal and moving quickly. It’s that conversation that shifted everything into motion.” Also, according to two Arab officials interviewed by the Times of Israel, Trump did more to sway Netanyahu to make a deal in one day than Biden had done all year. Rep. Ralph Norman: What Trump Told Me After I Voted Against Johnson for Speaker

Rep. Ralph Norman was on the House floor Jan. 3 when Rep. Nancy Mace, a fellow South Carolina Republican, phone in hand, told him that President-elect Donald Trump wanted to speak with him. Norman had just voted for Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to become speaker of the House, rather than Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La. For this week’s episode of “The Signal Sitdown,” Norman joins Daily Signal Politics Editor Bradley Devlin to explain why he initially voted against giving Johnson a second term as speaker, to share the inside story on how he went from a “no” to a “yes” on Johnson, and to pull back the curtain on an exclusive meeting Trump held with House conservatives at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on Jan. 11. “I had one chance when we voted for the speaker to use my one vote out of 435 the way I thought it should be used, and I voted against [Johnson]. I voted for Jim Jordan,” Norman said. “Nancy Mace handed me the phone,” Norman recalled. “She said, ‘the president wants to talk to you.’” The first thing Trump told Norman? “‘You’re interrupting my golf game,’” the South Carolina lawmaker said with a smile. “I said, ‘Well, Mr. President, I hate to be doing that.’” “‘Mike’s the only one that can win it. Jordan can’t win it,’” Trump said in Norman’s retelling, “‘I love Jim Jordan more than you do.’”  “I said, ‘Mr. President, I get that, but you need to be calling Mike Johnson and going over where is he going to take a stand on [budget] offsets,” Norman claimed. “And that’s why we’ve got the $38 trillion in debt.” Trump agreed Johnson and his House objectors should meet. In a side room, Norman, Johnson, and others huddled around the phone with Trump on speaker. “I said, ‘Mike, are you going to not put any more suspension votes up where more Democrats vote for it than Republicans?’” Norman recalled. “’Before you spend another dollar, are you going to have it offset with cuts?’” “After we talked back and forth, he said, ‘Yes.’” Norman claimed. “He said, ‘I will do that, and if I don’t, you can put me out,’” essentially promising to make good on his promises to conservatives or suffer going the way of his predecessor, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. “You do get threatened,” Norman said of withholding his vote for Johnson. Norman told The Daily Signal that after the speaker fight, he was threatened with a primary from various interest groups. “That’s fine,” the South Carolinian said of the interest-group threats. “Competition is good. I’ve always had competition. That’s what makes us better. And it’s the people’s seat. If they want somebody else, if they think my vote against Mike Johnson in the 90 minutes that it took swayed them to never vote for Ralph Norman, that’s their [right]. I respect their opinion.” “It took 90 minutes,” Norman said. “Is that worth sending a message, to me, in my one vote? Yes. Now, others don’t feel that way, and I understand that. I value their opinion, but nobody’s going to take my vote away from me.” “Even though we’ve got a slim majority, we’ve got the gavel,” he added. “We’ve got to use it. And [Johnson has] got to use the leverage he has as speaker.” Not long after, on Saturday, Norman and conservative House colleagues met with the president at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s estate. “Donald Trump is an amazing man. What is he, 78?” Norman said. “What struck me is, he is enthusiastic about what he’s about to do. He’s enthusiastic that people took the time to come down there, and he’s enthusiastic about righting, really, the wrongs that have been done to him personally.” “What was on my mind, and I brought it up, I said, ‘I really hope you can give Mike Johnson a spine and have him sell your ideas,’” he recalled. ‘Speech for the History Books’; ABC, CBS, NBC Hail Biden’s ‘Extraordinary’ Farewell

ABC, CBS, and NBC broke in Wednesday night for President Biden’s farewell address and, while they were never in total awe like they were with Barack Obama, they still showed their stripes in cheering the “advocate for working people” giving “very personal” “speech for the history books” and delivering an “extraordinary” message about the decline of “fact-checking” and an “oligarchy...that literally threatens our entire democracy.” CBS led the way with a full ten minutes of post-speech chit-chat. Outgoing CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell restated her favorite parts, saying Biden “not only tout[ed] his accomplishments as President — 17 million jobs...also talking about strengthening NATO, and then ending his remarks with a warning — warning of an unelected oligarchy of tech barons essentially taking power in America.” Face the Nation moderator and incoming CBS Evening News co-anchor Margaret Brennan boasted of how Biden didn’t give a “fond farewell,” but instead an “extraordinary” message consisting of a “number of warnings of the guardrails of democracy that he says are in peril, one of them, our very industry.” “He said the free press is crumbling, pointing to social media, making that connection back to technology and lack of fact-checking. He talked about the need to hold accountable social platforms. All of this seemingly, in that space, framing around some of the political forces of the moment who are aligned with Donald Trump,” she added before later pompously concluding Biden really honed in on “the threats to the forces that underpin our democracy” like “fact-checking.” Chief elections and campaign correspondent and anti-Trump author Robert Costa swooned over the “deeply personal” speech by someone “began his career at Scranton Joe, as someone who was an advocate for working people” and thus channeling Dwight Eisenhower’s own farewell address about the military industrial complex (click “expand”):     Well, at one level, it was deeply personal, Norah, you did see the photos of the family sitting behind President Biden, including his late son, Beau Biden. Earlier in the day, I was meeting with President Biden’s close friends like Senator Chris Coons and they expected him to advocate for his record, but was most striking — which you mentioned, the echo of Dwight D. Eisenhower, January 17th, 1961, President Eisenhower in his own farewell address warned the nation of a so-called military-industrial complex. Now, President Biden, as he departs the presidency come is warning of an “tech industrial complex,” and this comes as Elon Musk, the billionaire and others like Jeff Bezos are prepared to sit on that dais at the inaugural, President-Elect Trump on January 20th, and you see President Biden, who began his career at Scranton Joe, as someone who was an advocate for working people, ending his presidency as someone underscoring his own progressive values, really sending a signal to the left in this country that he stood with them on their core economic issues. O’Donnell went next to senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang, who admirably had a different take: Amid the fawning approvals elsewhere in the legacy media, CBS’s @Weijia Jiang knocked Biden’s speech as “dark” and suggested reporters were led to think the speech would be far more “personal and positive and nonpartisan”... “[F]rankly, I expected much more about his… pic.twitter.com/LGofhWBHhI — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) January 16, 2025 After chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes noticed the similarities between Biden’s inaugural and farewell addresses and what Trump was posting on Truth Social during the speech, O’Donnell brought in one final voice in senior White House and campaign correspondent, Ed O’Keefe. O’Donnell tried to lift up Biden’s line about “the seeds” of his so-called accomplishments having been “planted” for Americans to, in her words, “eventually feel them,” but O’Keefe had a brutal start in citing Biden’s poll numbers. He then wondered whether history would be kinder to him like it’s already been for George W. Bush (click “expand”):     [A]s you mentioned, 39 percent approval rating, not the greatest number to go out with, but what he’s hoping for and what he is signaling his history is going to be kinder to him. And he’s — in recent interviews, he has lamented the fact that, when various Covid stimulus checks went out in the early years of his presidency, he didn’t sign them and put his name on them, to reinforce that it was him who was helping Americans, believing now in hindsight that that would have helped in the short-term, at least shore up the belief among Americans that he was doing what he could to help. And so, saying “the seeds are planted and they will grow and bloom for generations to come,” he’s speaking to his infrastructure plan, the Covid relief that was established, the fact that his administration at least worked to support and protect Ukraine and its ongoing struggle with Russia and it’s a statement that other unpopular presidents have made, as well. George W. Bush is the one that comes to mind most immediately come who said I am more worried about what history will say about me and, even a few years removed since, given the whims of the Republican Party, and the way the world has gone, history is already treating him kinder that it was in the beginning. To the point about oligarchy, Norah, also important, he is not the first American president to warn of this. John Adams wrote about the few, the wellborn, and the rich, and concerns that this country was going to put too much emphasis on them. This is a problem that has come up before it has been addressed, and he is signaling to his party tonight, focus on that, that populist message, and maybe that’s the way to win back the White House. ABC and NBC were far back on the time count of post-speech analysis with only two minutes and 45 seconds on the former and three minutes and two seconds on the latter. On NBC, Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker was the lone standout in ebullience for Biden’s speech, delivering the laughable “history books” line and comparing Biden to Obama: NBC’s Kristen Welker trumpets President Biden’s farewell address as “a speech for the history books,” backed by a “very firm warning” that “harkens back to what we heard from former President Obama in his farewell address”.... “In some ways, this builds on the message, the… pic.twitter.com/E48kBJnWMl — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) January 16, 2025 While ABC was similar to NBC on the time count, they were limited to, well, pointless restatements of key lines (serving as their way of voicing agreement): On ABC, they were off the air not even three minutes after President Biden's farewell address ended, but it did feature lots of regurgitating by David Muir and the chief Biden regime apple polisher, Mary Bruce pic.twitter.com/AeFxsp5wKE — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) January 16, 2025 Of course, both Muir and Bruce honed in on Biden whining about the lack of respect for the legacy media’s fact-checking efforts (read: censorship campaigns). “This was a chance for President Biden to tout his accomplishments, try to define his own legacy, but also argue the importance of American democracy and the need to protect it, saying the ideals of America are constantly being tested. He issued a harsh warning to the oligarchs, he said, in this country who are taking shape, that are threatening our democracy,” Bruce said in part. From Tel Aviv, chief foreign correspondent Ian Pannell had it both ways by saying the world under Joe Biden has “been a tumultuous period...from Afghanistan to Ukraine, relations with China and, of course, the crisis here in the Middle East,” but said this ceasefire deal could be “his crowning achievement” and “a legacy worth having” if it becomes “an enduring peace[.]” To see the relevant transcripts from January 15, click here (for ABC), here (for CBS), and here (for NBC).

NewsBusters Podcast: Sneering Down Their Noses at Fox Host Hegseth

Senate Democrats brought out the slime buckets for the Pete Hegseth confirmation hearing on Tuesday. The journalists call it "tense," but we might call the Democrats "unglued." Trump's nominees are receiving much harsher media treatment than Biden's nominees four years ago. Some hearings are kind of chill, to use youngster slang. Marco Rubio's getting friendly treatment from his Senate colleagues. Pete Hegseth was fiercely questioned as if he was a fall-down drunk in between sexual assaults.  Senior Research Analyst Bill D’Agostino joins the show to discuss how the media cover a hearing when it seems like the Democrats failed to ruin a nominee. CBS Evening News began with a slew of attacking Democrats. Overall, the Big Three networks aired ten Democrat soundbites to five for the Republicans.  Four years ago, Biden Cabinet picks were gently questioned in comparison with the "grilling" of Trump's nominees. Biden's nominees were touted as historic: the first gay Transportation Secretary, the first Native American Secretary of the Interior. Nobody was supposed to mess with History on that, no "grilling" those pioneers.  The liberal media really hate it when you question the reign of DEI -- "diversity, equity, and inclusion" -- over government agencies. They've also hated anyone blaming the Democrats in California for caring more about DEI then they did about wildfire preparedness. Bill made one of his montage videos, and he explained it this way: "From fevered shrieking about climate change, to blind defense of inept Democratic officials, to obligatory fits of Trump-bashing, their reporting on the California wildfires perfectly highlights everything that makes our leftist media so terrible."  My favorite fraction was the Joe Scarborough clip, because when he says "you’re a fool IF"….you just think of his rant last year with all the "F-you if you can’t handle the truth that this is the best Biden ever." We also discuss our Associate Editor Nick Fondacaro in the courtroom for the CNN defamation trial in Panama City, Florida. We were highly amused when Jake Tapper claimed in a videotaped deposition that he didn't really care about the ratings of his show. Absolutely no one believes that, and they shouldn't. It sounded as ludicrous as reporter Alex Marquardt claiming in court that "I don't do hit pieces," when the evidence in this case proves him wrong.  Enjoy the podcast below, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
