Apple releases iOS 17.7, if you don’t want upgrade to iOS 18 just yet

iOS 18 has just been released by Apple with over 250+ features. Still, the company has also released iOS 17.7 for those who don't want to upgrade just yet. With this software update, Apple says it's only bringing bug fixes and security improvements. Interestingly, all iPhone users running iOS 17 can run iOS 18. However, we can't say the same about iPadOS, as Apple cut a few tablets from the new iPadOS 18 update. That said, if you're unsure about iOS 18 new features or general stability, you can give yourself extra time and update to iOS 17.7. For those iPad owners who can't update to iPadOS 18, iPadOS 17.7 is also available. Still, Apple will eventually "force" iPhone users to udpate to iOS 18. So if you want to keep running the latest iOS 17 update, you should update to iOS 17.7 right now. For iOS 17.6 and iPadOS 17.6, Apple added these features: Apple News+ is getting Live Activity support for Home Screen and Lock Screen, so you can keep following games and other factual stories happening at that moment. It also brings a new Messages app setting that lets you filter unknown senders if they’re international senders. Besides iOS 17.7 and iPadOS 17.7, Apple released macOS Sonoma 14.7 and macOS Ventura 13.7. It's unclear if the company will continue updating old software versions with new features, as it usually doesn't. With iOS 18/iPadOS 18/macOS Sonoma cycle, Apple is betting big on Apple Intelligence, which is expected to land on its devices starting next month in beta. With this AI platform, Cupertino expects to gain momentum, as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft have introduced breakthrough features using Large Language Models. Below, you can learn more about iOS 17, including its top features, latest updates, supported devices, and so much more. iPhone 16 Pro battery replacement will cost $20 more – here’s why that’s not bad news

The iPhone 16 phones will start being delivered to buyers on Friday, at which point we'll finally be able to put Apple's claims about the new devices to the test. One of the most interesting aspects of the iPhone 16 phones is battery life. We should see improvements over the iPhone 15 across the board. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will offer better battery life than any previous models. At least, that's what Apple says. What Apple didn't say is that battery replacements will be more expensive for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. You'll have to pay $119 instead of the $99 battery service fee that Apple will charge for all the other iPhone models. Longtime iPhone users who keep their devices for several years won't like that price hike. But there might be good reasons Apple is charging more money to replace the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max batteries. Continue reading... Medieval Theology Has an Old Take on a New Problem − AI Responsibility

By David Danks & Mike Kirby/The Conversation A self-driving taxi has no passengers, so it parks itself in a lot to reduce congestion and air pollution. After being hailed, the taxi heads out to pick up its passenger – and tragically strikes a pedestrian in a crosswalk on its way. Who or what deserves praise for the car’s actions to reduce congestion and air pollution? And who or what deserves blame for the pedestrian’s injuries? One possibility is the self-driving taxi’s designer or developer. But in many cases, they wouldn’t have been able to predict the taxi’s exact behavior. In fact, people typically want artificial intelligence to discover some new or unexpected idea or plan. If we know exactly what the system should do, then we don’t need to bother with AI. Alternatively, perhaps the taxi itself should be praised and blamed. However, these kinds of AI systems are essentially deterministic: Their behavior is dictated by their code and the incoming sensor data, even if observers might struggle to predict that behavior. It seems odd to morally judge a machine that had no choice. Read moreSection: NewsScience & SpaceHistoryAncient TraditionsRead Later

BREAKING: DOJ charges 2nd would-be Trump assassin with jaywalking and mostly-peacefully protesting without a permit

MAR-A-LAGO, FL The man who allegedly attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump has been formally charged—not with attempted murder, but with jaywalking and “mostly-peacefully” protesting without a permit. The suspect, identified as 58-year-old activist Ryan Routh, was apprehended near a Trump golf course after authorities say he made a failed attempt on Trump’s life using what can only be described as a poorly aimed AK47. However, it wasn’t his questionable assassination attempt that drew the ire of the law. Instead, prosecutors have slapped Fault with two serious infractions: crossing the street outside a designated crosswalk and protesting without the proper paperwork. “We take these charges very seriously,” said a spokesperson for the local police department. “Jaywalking is a gateway crime. Today, it’s crossing the street unlawfully. Tomorrow, it’s overthrowing governments.” When asked about the assassination attempt, authorities were quick to downplay the incident, characterizing Fault’s actions as part of a broader peaceful protest movement. “He was mostly peaceful,” confirmed Police Chief Woke, emphasizing that Fault’s attempt to launch a rock at the former president could be seen as “symbolic speech.” Legal analysts are baffled by the peculiar charges. “It’s rare that attempted assassination is downgraded to jaywalking,” said legal expert Hugh Jassole. “But in today’s climate, anything is possible.” In a statement, Trump’s legal team expressed confusion at the leniency. “I mean, the guy tried to kill me! You’d think that would be worth more than a $50 jaywalking fine,” Trump said at Mar-a-Lago. “I guess they’re saving the real punishment for my golf handicap.” Fault’s legal defense team has already begun arguing that the protest was, in fact, an artistic expression aimed at exposing the societal impacts of crosswalks on climate change. “He wasn’t jaywalking; he was making a statement about the arbitrary constraints of man-made infrastructure. He also wasn’t trying to kill Trump, just sending a message to the patriarchy.” As the trial looms, some in the media have started to refer to Fault as a hero, while others are wondering how long before he’s invited to headline a major cable news show. In the meantime, Trump has issued a statement thanking the jaywalking laws for being the true heroes of the day.
