Graffiti Found At Pompeii Shows Roman Kids Had An Eye For Violence

Ancient graffiti of battling gladiators has been found among the ruins of the Roman city Pompeii. Archaeologists on the project believe these scribbles reveal an insight into the mindset of ancient Romans and their often-bloody ways. The charcoal doodles were recently revealed among the remains of a courtyard belonging to Casa del Secondo Cenacolo Colonnato (Colonnaded House of the Second Last Supper) in southern Italy’s Pompeii Archaeological Park. The researchers say the drawings were created by children, likely aged between 5 and 7 years old. This idea was affirmed by the discovery of a small hand outlined in charcoal against the wall.Reporting the findings in Pompeii’s Excavations e-Journal, they explain how the graffiti suggest ancient Roman kids visited amphitheaters to watch the bloody spectacles of violence – and were likely to be very familiar with the savage ways of life in the ancient world.“It seems legitimate to hypothesize, based on literary evidence, that children were present during these shows,” the researchers write.“The drawings from the Casa del Cenacolo Colonnato confirm this hypothesis: what we see is testimony direct of the encounter between an infantile soul – very receptive and full of imagination – and the cruel pastime of the time, which in addition to gladiatorial games and hunts with animals, also involved staging executions of criminals and slaves,” they added. The outline of a small hand, perhaps of a child, was found among the graffiti.Image credit: Pompeii Archaeological ParkThey even go onto speculate how this early exposure to brutality may have profoundly influenced the dog-eat-dog world of Roman society. “Several recent studies have highlighted a link between early exposure to violent images and films and high levels of aggression in adolescence and adulthood. Maybe one day, we will be able to understand how much these phenomena had an impact on Roman society 2,000 years ago,” they conclude.Along with the doodles, the recent excavations uncovered the remains of a man and woman in the House of the Painters at Work. This villa picked up its name as it was filled with paint pots and mixing bowls, as if a team of workers had to flee the house when the infamous catastrophe struck.Inside the Casa del Secondo Cenacolo Colonnato (Colonnaded House of the Second Last Supper) of Pompeii.Image credit: Pompeii Archaeological ParkPompeii was destroyed in 79 CE when the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing thousands of people in the city and nearby settlements of Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae. The eruption showered Pompeii and the surrounding towns with over 6 meters (19 feet) of ash and other volcanic debris. Devastating as it was, it preserved the settlements for centuries, providing modern-day researchers with an unbelievably clear insight into the daily life of ancient Rome.“More and more, Pompeii reveals new wonderful discoveries and confirms itself as an extraordinary treasure chest,” Gennaro Sangiuliano, Italy’s Minister of Culture, said in a statement about the recent discovery.

We’ve got a big problem in Wisconsin

We’ve got a big problem in Wisconsin

Let me tell you about a little birdie of mine I spoke with recently, because what he told me is canary-in-the-coal-mine kind of stuff for the November presidential election. He’s a hard-core right-winger, and there’s none of that “Donald Trump tiptoes between the raindrops” worship from him. He supported Ron DeSantis in the primary. So this guy's not going to Mike Lindell symposiums, OK? And he is currently looking at the political landscape in several key battleground states. We need to do something different, we need to do it fast, and it needs to work. I want to focus on what he said about Wisconsin in particular after he and I began discussing a poll put out by Donald Trump’s personal pollster, John McLaughlin, in which Trump was losing independents by four in a head-to-head against Joe Biden — and actually finishing third among independents if you factor in Robert F. Kennedy Jr. First, let me just say that in none of the nine realms within the Marvel Cinematic Universe will you find a multiverse reality where Trump loses independents by four points and wins the presidential election. Republicans have not won independents since the 2016 election. What’s the last election Republicans won? 2016. Probably just a coincidence, says Nefarious. But is it possible that Joe Biden could depress his own base turnout because he is an 80-year-old mumbling corpse and thus open the door to Trump winning if he only loses independents by, say, one or two points? I think that's possible. Independents are the largest voting bloc in the country right now, so we are talking about tens of millions of people. And in the last two presidential elections, we had one guy win the decisive states by fewer than 40,000 votes in one case and fewer than 80,000 votes in the other. Which is why my little birdie is on the ground trying to figure out how the electoral needle can be threaded this time around. He’s not busy looking for voter fraud underneath every rock, though. That isn’t who he is. I mention it because it pertains to the voting landscape in Wisconsin and how the rest of our futures hang in the balance. Based on his professional surveying and canvassing of that battleground state — of which, along with Michigan and Pennsylvania, Trump must win at least one of if not two — my little birdie thinks it is possible we might have the lowest under-40 voter turnout in history. Now, I’ve taken election fraud pretty seriously since 2020. With this new information at my disposal, I pointed out that introducing this unprecedented level of uncertainty into the electoral equation would help the Democrats with their margin of cheating … er, I mean turnout operation advantage, right? Bingo, he said. The fraud concerns in Wisconsin are very real, according to my little birdie, because the state has some of the worst voter files in the country. The surest way to find out who will vote in the next election is to know who voted in the last one. Because if you just poll people on issues or candidates but these people aren't going to show up to vote, then your poll is worthless. This is why a healthy voter file is vital, because it is how you find the people who typically vote and figure out how to get a message to them so that they vote for you. Wisconsin is a historically purple state that currently has a Republican legislature and a Democrat governor. You would think, then, this would be a state where the voter file is on lockdown. It’s a pivotal swing state in a hyper-competitive election environment following year after year of accusations of election fraud from both sides of the aisle. Nope. Not even close. My little birdie told me he had a woman in one of his focus groups complain about receiving a mail-in ballot for people who didn't even live with her. When she complained to the city, she learned that five other people were registered to vote at her address. My little birdie verified it. Everything she said was true. Now consider just how much money and fame have been chased by people moaning and complaining about voting irregularities these last few years without doing anything about it. How many shows, how many documentaries, have highlighted the problem? Or consider that when I pointed out the sketchy banana republic drop boxes in Wisconsin on Glenn Beck’s show the morning after the 2020 election, the entire Blaze channel got demonetized by Facebook. Is that where we are heading again after zero accountability — or, at the very least, the sort of self-censoring that other high-profile networks on the right have embraced as a means of avoiding being crushed financially by the online algorithms that rule us all? I'm sharing this with you just after Memorial Day weekend, with the maybe, sort of, not really “most important election of our lifetime” less than 24 weeks in the future. And I can’t even begin to tell you how much I don’t want to do the same election shows I did after the 2020 and 2022 elections. They were two of the worst nights of my professional career because I knew how much pain they meant for our country in the first case and how little we all seemed to care about it after the red wave never happened in the second case. Are we going to just shrug now and triple down on that when our entire birthright is at stake? I can’t. I won’t. We need to do something different, we need to do it fast, and it needs to work. Because like Captain America said in “Avengers: Endgame,” I don’t know what I’m going to do if it doesn’t.

Embrace exclusivity for a better life

Embrace exclusivity for a better life

In today’s hyperconnected world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of social connections and constant barrage of global events. We’re inundated with notifications, news updates, and social media posts, making it seem as though we must keep track of everyone and everything. There is wisdom, however, in recognizing that our brains — and our hearts — are not designed for such vast, impersonal networks. Instead, embracing exclusivity and a bit of selfishness can lead to healthier, more meaningful lives. Let’s explore why focusing on fewer, deeper relationships and local concerns can benefit us all. Collecting friends is not healthy Historically, humans have maintained a limited number of close friendships. Evolutionarily speaking, our ancestors formed tight-knit groups for survival, fostering deep bonds with a select few rather than superficial connections with many. This pattern generally persists in modern life: As we grow and move through different life stages, we naturally shed some acquaintances and hold on to a few core friendships. During school, we might form close friendships, but upon graduation, we tend to keep in touch with just a handful of those friends. The same occurs with workplace relationships; despite meeting numerous colleagues, only a couple might transition into true friends. For parents, especially mothers with toddlers, friendships often revolve around shared experiences of raising young children. As children grow older, these connections might fade, having served their purpose during a particular life stage. Our brains are not equipped to process and react to such an overwhelming amount of negative information. Our brains are not wired to manage relationships with an enormous group of people. Social media, however, challenges this natural limitation by encouraging us to "collect" friends. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram make it easy to maintain a connection with nearly every person we've ever met. This isn't healthy or normal. Our ancestors didn't evolve to keep track of hundreds of individuals; doing so can lead to superficial interactions, spike in anxiety, and social fatigue. This phenomenon is particularly harmful to children. In the pre-social-media era, a young girl's self-worth might hinge on the opinions of a few close friends. Today, a negative comment from a complete stranger on Instagram can significantly undermine her self-esteem. The opinions of countless acquaintances and strangers infiltrate her world, creating an unhealthy environment where external validation is sought from an unrealistically large audience. Stress without solution The principle of exclusivity extends beyond personal relationships to our consumption of news and information. In the past, people mainly concerned themselves with events affecting their families and local communities. Major news from their own state might catch their attention, but global catastrophes and distant crimes were not daily considerations. This limited scope allowed individuals to focus on problems they could actually address. Today, though, we are bombarded with news from every corner of the globe. We learn about crimes, disasters, and conflicts in real time, regardless of their proximity or relevance to our lives. This incessant stream of bad news creates a constant state of stress and anxiety. Our brains are not equipped to process and react to such an overwhelming amount of negative information. Knowing about every tragic event worldwide does not benefit us; instead, it induces a sense of helplessness and fear. We cannot fight or flee from these distant threats, leaving us feeling paralyzed and hopeless. This chronic stress is detrimental to our emotional, mental, and physical health. The solution lies in narrowing our focus to local issues where we can make a tangible difference. Rather than getting lost in debates about global problems like the "war on poverty," we should concentrate on actions within our reach. Helping a local family in need can have a profound impact, providing immediate support and fostering a sense of community. When confronted with bad news, we should ask ourselves, "Is this something I can do anything about?" If the answer is no, it’s best to redirect our energy toward efforts where we can effect change, however small. This approach not only makes better use of our time and resources but also helps reduce unnecessary anxiety. Embracing a bit of exclusivity and selfishness is not only natural but also essential for our peace of mind. By focusing on fewer, more meaningful relationships and addressing local concerns, we can lead more fulfilling lives. Social media’s drive to accumulate friends and the constant flood of global news can overwhelm us, leading to superficial interactions and chronic stress. Instead, let's prioritize deep, genuine connections and engage in local actions that offer tangible results. In doing so, we align more closely with our evolutionary design and create a healthier, happier life.

How Europe is waging a war on America’s free market

How Europe is waging a war on America’s free market

I recently wrote a column warning that the Biden administration is bringing Europe's war on food to the United States. Now, the EU is bringing the war on the free market to American companies. The EU recently passed a bill requiring all companies that make over half a billion dollars in Europe to comply with its progressive environmental, social, and governance standards. This is something that I have been warning my listeners and readers for over three years now, and it finally happened. It’s official: European social justice metrics will be imposed on America. The only thing that will change this is if Congress and the president act. Do you think they will? It's one of the biggest threats to freedom in America, both in the short term and in the long term. This European law is going to force American companies to conform with the European rules, values, and environmental standards. This will indirectly impose Europe’s ESG standards on countless American companies, including many small businesses. Here's what will happen: The EU has established an extraordinarily complex ESG system with which all companies must comply. This includes both “covered companies” based in the United States as well as non-EU companies that operate in Europe. In other words, if you sell half a billion dollars' worth of stuff in the United States, you must comply with the EU’s ESG standards. If you sell half a billion dollars’ worth of goods in Europe, you also must comply. But that's only the beginning. It's not just your business that has to comply but also all the companies that you do business with. If you're a small company and sell a product to a big company, like Amazon, which makes at least $500 million in Europe, you're going to have to comply.Franchise and licensing agreements as well as subsidiaries of larger companies will also fall under the EU's sweeping ESG regime. This affects people like me who write books. Simon and Schuster, my publisher, sells books in Europe all the time, and it makes over $500 million in those markets. Am I now forced to comply? Thank God I have Mercury Inc. so that I don’t have to deal with Simon and Schuster. But am I required? Most importantly, all covered companies will need to ensure that businesses disclose their supply and value chains. Do you know what a supply and value chain is? Those companies must adhere to the relevant ESG rules.Companies will also have to create “climate change transition plans” and “prevention action plans.”That means if you make a widget and sell it to someone who makes radios for Ford, you would have to comply with Europe's ESG standards, even though you don't have anything directly to do with Ford. You see how this is working? If you don't comply in America, you cannot sell anything in Europe. Each country in the EU will be responsible for enforcing its rules and issuing punishments. Civilian and activist groups also are covered in this bill. Activist groups can bring private cause of action against companies for failing to meet guidelines. This opens the floodgates for activist attorneys. The EU will, of course, give a pass to China. Nobody, for some reason, thinks that China’s authoritarian state that puts its own people with social credit scores and exploits slave labor in camps should be held accountable. Do you think Europe is actually going to have Apple pay a fine or stop making its products in China because they're made by slaves? No.There is a book over in my museum. It's very rare because the king had them all burned during the witch trials in Europe. It was burned for calling the witch trials hogwash. The king wanted to keep the witch trials so that he could get rid of his enemies, so he burned all books that went against his desired narrative. That's exactly what's going to happen here. Companies like Apple, Facebook, and Amazon will get a pass doing business in Europe because they are doing "the king's" business — even though they're working with the Chinese! But any company that decides to stand and say, "No, we're not doing this," you're doomed. If you play ball with the government, one way or another, you're all right. If you dare stand against it, you will be snuffed out. The only thing that will change this is if Congress and the president act. Do you think they will? Do not dismiss this when you go to vote. Which candidate is most likely to stand up and say, "No! The United States is a huge market, and we're not playing your game. Europe will not be able to stand on its own." It’s vital that you consider this when going to the polls this November.Want more from Glenn Beck? Toto Recall: Dotty De Niro deserves Oscar for anti-Trump meltdown

Robert De Niro is an inspiration to active seniors everywhere. Not only does the octogenarian film legend maintain a virtually nonstop work schedule, he still finds the time to nurture one of the most robust cases of Trump Derangement Syndrome in Hollywood. The venue apologized for Dreyfuss’ appearance as if he had burned a cross on the stage, donned a KKK hat, or expressed support for Donald Trump. And yesterday, the "Goodfellas" star once again showed he can go full-blown "Orange Man Bad" with a vigor that puts liberals half his age to shame.De Niro teamed with President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign for a rambling speech outside the New York City courtroom where the Democrats’ lawfare campaign rolls on.“If [Trump] gets in, I can tell you right now, he will never leave! He will never leave! You know that. He will never leave,” De Niro said of Trump, who peacefully left the White House in 2021 after his electoral loss to Biden.De Niro might as well have been wearing sandwich boards announcing, “the end is nigh!” The appearance proved so embarrassing, even CNN and MSNBC gave it short shrift. And we thought “Dirty Grandpa” was the low point of the icon’s career …Dozens injured in Dreyfuss snark attackRichard Dreyfuss triggered the woke left and the media (but we repeat ourselves) over the weekend. The 76-year-old Oscar winner appeared at a Massachusetts film event to discuss his 1975 classic “Jaws.” That’s where things went sideways, and there’s little cogent reporting on what happened next. The Hollywood Reporter took the word of wide-eyed X users to say Dreyfuss uncorked a volley of sexist, transphobic rants at the event. No proof. No exact quotes or even solid paraphrasing.Nada.The actor did briefly appear on stage in a dress, and other reports suggest he cast doubt on the wisdom of surgically transitioning teens, a view held by quite a few non-celebrity Americans. Yet the venue apologized for Dreyfuss’ appearance as if he had burned a cross on the stage, donned a KKK hat, or expressed support for Donald Trump. We’re still waiting for cold, hard facts to emerge from the event. For now, it’s another day, another reason to distrust the mainstream media ...Hollywood 'GarFuriosa' over weekend box office disasterPass the hat around for Hollywood suits. The Memorial Day weekend saw awful, terrible, no-good box office numbers. Again. This time, the culprits were “Garfield” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” Each made roughly $25 million and $31 million, respectively, for the four-day holiday weekend.Even water carriers like the Hollywood Reporter dubbed the results “disastrous.” Guess no one will refer to the double features as “GarFuriosa” or “Furiofield.”Waiting in the wings is “Deadpool & Wolverine," supposedly the summer’s one sure thing at the box office. That’s a July 26 release. Between now and then, Tums addiction could hit record levels in Tinsel Town ...Netflix and kill ... the big-screen experienceNetflix has been a rare bright spot for Hollywood. Not only does the phrase “Netflix and chill” still bring warm fuzzies, the streaming site isn’t shedding as much red ink as its streaming peers.Still, Netflix’s eagerness to end moviegoing as we know it has some up in arms. And the latest comments from CEO Ted Sarandos aren't helping. Here’s part of what he told the New York Times about movie watching in the 21st century."There's no reason to believe that the movie itself is better in any size of screen for all people ... My son's an editor, he watched 'Lawrence of Arabia' on his phone."To be fair, I hear “Garfield’s” lasagna looks just as delicious on your iPad….Isn't Jar Jar Binks one-fourth Jamaican?George Lucas couldn’t predict his “Flash Gordon”-inspired saga would make him one of the richest men in the galaxy. “Star Wars” transformed his life and career, and he made more pretty pennies when he sold the franchise to Disney for a cool $4 billion. He also never imagined his series would be attacked for its perceived lack of diversity. And the 80-year-old, who used his rage against President Richard Nixon to inspire “Star Wars,” is understandably grumpy about it.“They would say, ‘It’s all white men.' I'd say, it's not. Most of the people are aliens," he said. "And the idea is you’re supposed to accept people for what they are, whether they’re big and furry or whether they’re green and whatever — the idea is all people are equal.”Sorry, George. This is your Democratic Party. Now, be a good apparatchik and ask Disney to update the original trilogy with nonbinary characters.
