Carbon Dioxide Increase Is Fastest It Has Ever Been In Last 50,000 Years

It is undeniable that we are changing the planet’s climate. The reality of this is backed by study after study – and the latest one shows that the rate at which carbon dioxide is being released into the atmosphere now has no natural counterparts over the last 50,000 years.Researchers analyzed the gas that has been trapped in Antarctic ice over that period. They found that in the last largest natural increase, carbon dioxide rose by 14 parts per million over 55 years. This took place 7,000 years ago. The same increase now takes between 5 and 6 years."Studying the past teaches us how today is different. The rate of CO2 change today really is unprecedented," lead author Kathleen Wendt, an assistant professor at Oregon State University's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, said in a statement. "Our research identified the fastest rates of past natural CO2 rise ever observed, and the rate occurring today, largely driven by human emissions, is 10 times higher."Previous analysis has shown that there were peculiar jumps in carbon dioxide during the last ice age, which ended around 10,000 years ago, but there weren’t enough details to work out what was happening during that time. These periods are called Heinrich Events, and the new work has delivered crucial insights into their cause."These Heinrich Events are truly remarkable," added co-author Christo Buizert, an associate professor in the same department. "We think they are caused by a dramatic collapse of the North American ice sheet. This sets into motion a chain reaction that involves changes to the tropical monsoons, the Southern hemisphere westerly winds and these large burps of CO2 coming out of the oceans."      A potentially important player during the Heinrich Events is the westerly winds. They do affect the circulation in the deep ocean, and during the rise of carbon dioxide, they appeared to be stronger. The strengthening led to the rapid release of CO2 from the Southern Ocean. This could be bad news for the future.Previous research has suggested that the climate crisis is making the westerly wind stronger again. If this work is correct, it might mean that going forward, the Southern Ocean’s ability to trap the carbon dioxide we release will greatly diminish."We rely on the Southern Ocean to take up part of the carbon dioxide we emit, but rapidly increasing southerly winds weaken its ability to do so," Wendt said.A paper describing the results is published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Some Papua New Guineans Have Denisovan Genes, And It Might Protect Them From Malaria

New research has found that lowland populations of Papua New Guinea have Denisovan genes that may have helped them develop a resistance to malaria. The findings are part of a larger study that examined whole-genome sequences from highlanders and lowlanders living in the southwestern Pacific country.Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a diverse range of environments, each of which presents different challenges to the people living there. The difference between lowlanders and highlanders is indicative of this. The former are exposed to pathogens, such as malaria, that are not an issue for the latter, while the latter have to survive in low oxygen environments caused by the high altitude.Despite each population clearly adapting to endure in such different environments, little is known about the specific nature of these adaptations. That’s where this new study comes in. The data was collected by the Papuan Past project, which brought together researchers from the universities of Tartu (Estonia), Toulouse (France), and Papua New Guinea.“We explored the signatures of selection in newly sequenced whole genomes of 54 PNG highlanders from Mt Wilhelm (Chimbu Province) and 74 PNG lowlanders from Daru Island (Western Province),” project lead Dr François-Xavier Ricaut explained in a statement.“We hypothesised that the genomes of both populations have been shaped differently to mitigate the detrimental effects of their respective environments”.  In this study, the genetic variants under selection were associated with blood-related phenotypes.  The team found that one of the candidates for selection in lowlanders was something of non-Homo sapiens origin. The Denisova, an extinct archaic hominin population that lived in Asia before modern humans settled in Papua New Guinea (around 50,000 years ago), appear to have left genes that have benefited their human descendants. This is because these archaic humans interbred with early humans and passed on part of their genome. The researchers believe that a genetic mutation in Denisovans that impacts a specific protein structure has survived into Papua New Guinean genomes.“It looks like the altered protein is beneficial for the lowlanders to survive in their environment. Although we do not know the exact cause of this selection, this mutation might help the lowlanders overcome malaria,” Dr Mayukh Mondal explained. In contrast, the highlanders show a genetic variant that may impact their red blood cell count. A higher red blood count helps the highlanders live at an altitude where the oxygen level is lower. The selected variant in the lowlanders, on the other hand, was associated with the percentage of white blood cells, key components of the immune system."This supports the idea that hypoxia might have been the main driving force of selection that has acted on Papua New Guinean highlanders. However, specific pathogens might have shaped the genome of lowlanders through selection," added Dr Mathilde André.Interestingly, as Dr Nicolas Brucato pointed out, both these variants “also affect the heart rate of individuals with those mutations. This multiplicity highlights the complexity of interpreting the role of genetic mutations. One mutation can affect multiple phenotypes altogether."The authors conclude the study illustrates how adaptation to the local environment has shaped the genomes and resulting traits, or phenotypes, of different Papua New Guinean populations. It also highlights just how important it is to investigate populations with diverse backgrounds in helping scientists fully understand the intricacies of human biology. The study is published in Nature Communications.

Millionaire’s treasure “opened” after 100 years of storage under lock and key

The auction house calls Lars Emil Bruun’s estate “the most valuable collection” to ever come to market, reports Sky News. The tycoon Lars Emil Bruun stipulated in his will that the collection of 20 thousand coins, which he collected throughout his life , must be kept for 100 years before it can be sold. Sky News writes about this . This fall, more than a century after the millionaire’s death, New York auctioneer Stack Bowers will finally sell off his unique collection. It is reported that some copies can bring up to 800 thousand pounds sterling, and in general the entire inheritance is about 60 million. Coins of Lars Emil Bruun Lars Bruun, who was born in 1852, became wealthy through his dairy business and had an interesting hobby – collecting rare coins, medals, tokens and banknotes from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. After the First World War, the rich man noted in his will that his collection should serve as a reserve for the royal fund in Copenhagen if it was destroyed. When Bruun died, his collection was transferred to his former Danish residence at Frederiksborg Castle, and then to the National Bank of Denmark. Before the treasures were put up for auction, the National Museum acquired seven rare coins – six gold and one silver, using the right of first refusal. These exhibits were minted around the 15th-17th centuries. Danish or Norwegian monarchs and cost more than 877 thousand pounds sterling. “They are described in the literature as the only existing specimen of their kind. The fact that this collection was closed for a hundred years makes it a legend. It’s like a fairy tale,” says senior researcher and expert at the National Museum Helle Horsnaes. Michael Knowles Mauls Biden’s Ridiculous Defense of Bidenomics on CNN

The Daily Wire host Michael Knowles attacked President Joe Biden for his incoherent response to questions from a CNN anchor.  During the May 10 edition of The Michael Knowles Show, Knowles responded to President Biden’s befuddled defense of Bidenomics, noting that Biden’s “failures on the economy were most likely to destroy Democrats in November.” To emphasize just how bad things are for Biden, Knowles played a clip of “Erin Burnett of CNN grilling Biden for his economic failures” during which Biden made a vain attempt to save face.  On May 8, CNN Anchor Erin Burnett, to her credit, confronted President Biden with both his low polling on economic issues and bad economic statistics. “Voters by a wide margin, trust Trump more on the economy,” Burnett told Biden. She went on to cite polls and statistics that spell out Biden’s devastating failures:  “The cost of buying a home in the United States is double what it was when you look at your monthly costs from before the pandemic. Real income, when you account for inflation is actually down since you took office, economic growth last week, far short of expectations. Consumer confidence, maybe no surprise, is near a two-year low. With less than six months to go to election day are you worried that you're running out of time to turn that around?” Absurdly, Biden responded, “We’ve already turned it around.” Biden referenced a poll to support this point before veering off in a very different direction. “The polling data has been wrong all along. You guys do a poll at CNN, how many folks do you have to call to get one response?”  Knowles roasted the president for his incoherent response. “Biden is not as swift as he used to be and he just gave two answers that contradict each other,” Knowles said.  He ripped Biden for simultaneously questioning the bias of unfavorable polls while also pointing to one solitary favorable poll. Knowles pointed out the absurdity of anyone on the left arguing that the polls or the media are biased against them.  “Democrats have the media on their side. So when a Republican says ‘the fake news coverage is slanted against us’, that’s different from the Democrats saying that because Republicans don't really have news outlets and Democrats have all of the news outlets, same goes for polling, same goes for any aspect of American political propaganda,” Knowles said.  The Daily Wire host went on to say that when polls are actually wrong, they tend to overestimate Democrats rather than Republicans. “So when you’ve got polls coming out, economic indicators coming out, statistics from all the social scientists coming out that do not look good for Democrats and you hear this being reported by Democrat liberal news outlets, you know these people are really, really in trouble,” he said. He added that the media “have every single incentive to paint the Democrats in as good a light as possible and that’s just not going to cut it these days because everyone knows that the economy is in the doldrums.”  The economy is in the doldrums. While the devastating statistics listed by Burnett proved too much for Biden to address, they aren’t the only bad numbers. Burnett also could have mentioned that Americans have dealt with 5.5% average monthly inflation under the Biden administration. She also could’ve addressed how gas prices have skyrocketed from $2.42 a gallon in Jan. 2021 (when Biden took office) to $3.54 in March. MRC Backs Religious Lawsuit Against NPR-Favoring Government Rate Scheme

The Media Research Center is calling on the federal government to stop discriminating against religious broadcasting companies and right-leaning talk radio. On Monday, MRC filed an amicus brief this week in support of the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF)’s petition for the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a case pertaining to religious broadcasting companies challenging the Biden-led Copyright Royalty Board (CRB), which is a federal entity responsible for regulating royalties and copyright licenses. In the brief, MRC argued that the CRB violated the First Amendment religious liberty and free speech rights by not providing the same deal to religious broadcasters it entered into with leftist National Public Radio (NPR). The legal battle began in 2021 after the CRB inexplicably refused to extend a favorable NPR deal, including low fees, to the National Religious Broadcasters Noncommercial Music License Committee (NRB), a non-profit representing various religious communicators and broadcasting companies. The ADF wrote in February that the CRB established a statutory license for companies, including NPR and NRB, to pay royalties to the copyright holders of songs played on their stations. Instead of offering the same rates granted to NPR, the CRB demanded that religious broadcasting companies pay 18 times the royalty fees of NPR if they have over 200 listeners. This was in contrast to the CRB's deal with NPR, a secular, taxpayer-funded company at the center of controversy for bias. Related: Here Are the Best & Worst Moments From the House NPR Hearing with MRC’s Graham “Here, the Board created a content-based, tiered rate structure that required religious broadcasters to pay far more than NPR stations to communicate with an audience above a mere 218 people,” the MRC brief read, alluding to the notable discrepancies in the deals offered to NPR and the NRB. Further addressing the court, the MRC wrote that this discriminatory practice “forces religious broadcasters to pay royalty rates 18 times higher than those to which NPR will be subject.” The religious broadcasting companies took the CRB to court in 2021. Regrettably, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled in favor of the federal government. “This unlawful discrimination forces some noncommercial religious stations to stay small and restrict their listener reach so they can afford to stream online,” the ADF added. “The Copyright Royalty Board is violating federal law and the U.S. Constitution, and so we are urging the Supreme Court to take this important case and rule on the side of religious liberty and free speech.” Conservatives are under attack. CBS Hypes The Daily Show Giving 'People The Information They Need'

This week’s host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Desi Lydic, joined the cast of Monday’s CBS Mornings to promote her upcoming episodes. Throughout the segment, Lydic and her hosts would hype the fellow Paramount property as a place that people can go to get not only entertaining, but informed takes on politics, and also start conversations they wouldn’t otherwise have. It all sounded nice, but was completely disconnected from The Daily Show that exists in the real world. Co-host and Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition cover model Gayle King began the segment by introducing Lydic, “Viewers know her for her dry sense of humor and clever takes on politics and current events. She is hilarious. She joined the Emmy Award-winning show in 2015. Recently, she poked fun at Nebraska for being one of only two states that splits its electoral votes by congressional district rather than the winner takes all.”     In the clip that CBS showed, Lydic was actually arguing that Nebraska’s system is better than a winter-take-all and condemning those who sought to switch to such a system. Her main point, however, was that the Electoral College should be done away with and replaced with the popular vote, which King eagerly embraced, “I think she might be onto something.” Later, co-host Nate Burleson asked Lydic, “When it comes to comedy, especially during these times, I feel like there's an appetite for intelligent, political comedy because it gives the people the information they need while making them feel comfortable about the chaos that they are currently living in. Not that this hasn’t always been here, but nowadays I feel like there is a bigger stage for entertainers like you. Do you feel like that's the case?” Lydic claimed a special ability to build cross-aisle bridges: Well, it does feel like things are so polarized and people are getting the news from the sources that reflect back their own opinions. You know, it feels like we're all kind in echo chambers and, you know, I personally am certainly more on the left-leaning side. The Daily Show tends to be a more progressive show, but I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. My parents are Republicans, have been Republicans for quite some time, so, you know, those conversations can be challenging, and humor at its best can be sort of disarming and maybe start conversations that wouldn't happen otherwise. That sounds nice, but speaking of Kentucky, last year, Lydic took a field trip to the state with the Washington Post’s Perry Bacon Jr., who used the interview to urge people to harass Republicans at church and the grocery store. In the same interview, Lydic reveled in Sen. Rand Paul getting his “ass kicked” by his neighbor. Regardless, Lydic did Jon Stewart’s classic clown nose on, clown nose off routine as she added “So, we want to entertain people. We’re not out to change the world.” Burleson was not prepared to let Lydic sell herself short, “But that helps when you write, that you understand both perspectives.” Lydic agreed, “I think it's important to get curious about what other people feel and if you're at odds, you know, ask questions. Have a little empathy. Try to have a meaningful conversation about it.” Again, that sounds nice, but Lydic doesn’t put her money where her mouth is. She could interview a conservative, but that is not scheduled to happen. Instead, we’ll probably get more claims like “having a vagina does not make you a woman” or that Jesus would approve of Transgender Visibility Day. Here is a transcript for the May 14 show: CBS Mornings 5/14/2024 9:42 AM ET GAYLE KING: Our next guest, Desi Lydic is hosting The Daily Show alongside Jon Stewart and The Daily Show news team. Viewers know her for her dry sense of humor and clever takes on politics and current events. She is hilarious. She joined the Emmy Award-winning show in 2015. Recently, she poked fun at Nebraska for being one of only two states that splits its electoral votes by congressional district rather than the winner takes all. DESI LYDIC: Nebraska should really truly keep the system, though, because it's certainly a more fair way to divide up the votes than winner take off. What if everybody did that like Nebraska by district or maybe even by person, you know, then whoever whips the most persons would be president. That would be pretty popular. Oh, we could call it the popular vote. I don't know. I'm just spitballing. KING: I think she might be onto something, that Desi Lydic joins us in the studio. Hello, Desi. We're so glad you're here today. … NATE BURLESON: You know, when it comes to comedy, especially during these times, I feel like there's an appetite for intelligent, political comedy because it gives the people the information they need while making them feel comfortable about the chaos that they are currently living in. Not that this hasn’t always been here, but nowadays I feel like there is a bigger stage for entertainers like you. Do you feel like that's the case? LYDIC: Well, it does feel like things are so polarized and people— BURLESON: Yeah. LYDIC: -- are getting the news from the sources that reflect back their own opinions. BURLESON: Yeah. LYDIC: So, we want to entertain people. We’re not out to change the world. BURLESON: But that helps when you write, that you understand both perspectives. LYDIC: That's right. KING: Which you do, which you do, yeah. LYDIC: I think it's important to get curious about what other people feel— BURLESON: Yeah. LYDIC: -- and if you're at odds, you know, ask questions. Have a little empathy. Try to have a meaningful conversation about it.

'Was I molested. I think so': Snopes' update on Ashley Biden diary fact-check spells trouble for Joe Biden

Aimee Harris moved into the former residence of Ashley Biden in Delray Beach, Florida, in 2020. Just as Hunter Biden abandoned a laptop containing damning information at a Delaware computer repair shop, Ashley Biden had left behind a diary containing troubling allegations that implicated then-presidential candidate Joe Biden in possible abuse. After finding the diary, Harris worked in concert with Robert Kurlander to sell the document, ultimately, to Project Veritas. Kurlander and Harris pleaded guilty years later to conspiracy to transport supposedly stolen property across state lines. Project Veritas refrained from publishing it, both out of concern for doing more harm to Ashley Biden than her father may already have and the organization's inability to "corroborate the allegation further." The National File, however, published a digital copy it allegedly received from a Project Veritas employee in October 2020. Just as social media dutifully hid the Hunter Biden laptop story from the public ahead of the 2020 election, Politifact indicated that damning posts about the Democrat in the diary were flagged as misinformation. Once again, the so-called misinformation of yesteryear has matured into the cold hard facts of today. Proven Snopes has updated its fact-check page on the diary, confirming both that the diary belonged to Ashley Biden and that the president's daughter accused him of inappropriate behavior. The page previously indicated that the claim that "a diary authored by U.S. President Joe Biden's daughter, Ashley, describes inappropriate actions toward her taken by the president when she was a child" was "unproven." Up until this month, the Snopes entry indicated the claim was unproven because "the authenticity of this document or the images published by National File have not been confirmed." The fact-check outfit was compelled to change its tune after Ashley Biden, 42, once again confirmed the diary was hers in an April 8 letter to the judge overseeing Harris' case in New York. "I am deeply saddened that I even have to write this letter because my personal private journal was stolen and sold for profit," wrote Ashley Biden. While admitting the document was hers, Ashley Biden attempted to cast doubt on the veracity of her various entries, suggesting they were "stream-of-consciousness thoughts." 'Was I molested. I think so.' "Repeatedly, I hear others grossly misinterpret my once-private writings and lob false accusations that defame my character and those of the people I love," added Ashley Biden. 'Showers w/ my dad' In one of the more troubling entries in the diary, penned in January 2019, Ashley Biden explores the causes of her "sexual trauma" and apparent sex addiction. "I know it's not the healthiest way to deal with things but @ least it's better than drugs," wrote the president's daughter. Ashley Biden then indicated that her unchecked sex drive may have been the result of childhood trauma. "Hyper-sexualized @ a young age. What is this due to? Was I molested. I think so — I can't remember specifics but I do remember trauma — I remember not liking the Woolzacks house, I remember somewhat being sexualized with Caroline [Biden, her cousin]; I remember having sex with Friends @ a young age; showers w/ my dad (probably not appropriate), Being turned on when I wasn't suppose to be." Ashley Biden wrote a letter to the judge confirming the diary is real and belongs to her.\n\nHere\u2019s a reminder of what the diary said:\n\nThe President of the United States is a p*d0phiIe. — (@) Biden boosters like Ed Krassenstein appear keen to downplay the contents of the diary. Others think Snopes' about-face and the corresponding confirmation of the diary's authenticity could change the outcome of the 2024 election. Legal scholar Robert P. George, director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, noted that the Snopes update "strikes me as what Joe Biden might describe as a 'big [expletive] deal.' Imagine if it were Ivanka Trump making the accusation against her father. Does this give those Democrats who've been looking for an excuse to push Biden aside in favor of a more electable presidential candidate the justification they've been looking for?" Like Blaze News? Bill Maher and Bill Burr agree Louis CK should be welcomed back in Hollywood

Bill Maher and comedian Bill Burr went after cancel culture in Maher's recent "Club Random" podcast episode, suggesting that it is time to welcome Louis CK back to the big stage following the comedian's sexual misconduct allegations. CK was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017, and he ultimately admitted that he masturbated in the presence of colleagues. The spat caused some rifts in CK's career, such as being dropped from major projects. However, the comedian has clawed his way back, touring and performing live again.'They took $50 million; I think they punished him.'Maher and Burr appeared to agree that while the #MeToo movement started as something everyone could agree on, it quickly lost its way and turned into something else. The #MeToo movement was kicked off in 2006 by activist Tarana Burke, but it gained national attention in 2017 with the Harvey Weinstein scandal.Cancel culture has specifically scrutinized stand-up comedians over the past few years, with those on the far left pushing for performers to be barred from telling jokes that could be deemed too offensive. Maher and Burr said that CK had been "punished" enough for his violation and that he should be allowed to resume his career. The two added that his behavior was "not the end of the world." Bill Burr | Club Random with Bill Maher www.youtube.com "I mean, don't get me started on that," Maher said, appearing to refer to CK working outside the Hollywood system.“Isn’t it time everyone just went: ‘Okay, it wasn’t a cool thing to do, but it’s been long enough and welcome back.’ Enough! I mean, for Christ’s sake, it’s not the end of the world,” Maher said on the episode.“People have done so much worse things and gotten less. There’s no rhyme or reason to the #MeToo-type punishments.”“They took $50 million; I think they punished him,” Burr chimed in.Burr went on to claim that cancel culture was not a serious thing any more, saying "it's like most things. It started off with something everyone could agree on, and then quickly it just spun out of control.”“I remember whenever that cancel culture got to the point of where it was, ‘I don’t like some of the topics in your stand-up act,’ yeah? That’s when it got weird. But that’s all over. It’s all over.”“Yeah, no one cares any more,” the comedian continued. But Maher appeared to disagree with Burr, suggesting that either of them could get canceled "in the next two minutes."Maher has been critical of cancel culture for years. In 2023, he noted that he had lost a fair number of "woke" friends who did not agree with his political takes. "Don't let the door hit you in the a**," Maher said. "You were no fun to begin with. You have a terrible sense of humor."Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

Brawl erupts after 200 'rowdy' teens gather at shopping mall carnival; teen jumps on cop's back, another elbows cop in head

A brawl erupted after around 200 "rowdy" teens gathered at a Minnesota shopping mall carnival over the weekend. Image source: KARE-TV video screenshotAmong the featured attractions: a teen jumping on a police officer's back, coupled with another youngster elbowing the same officer in the head. The officer suffered a concussion and is out of work, KARE-TV reported.'Grow up. ... I understand you're kids, but ... it's not right.'Officers working security at the Northtown Mall carnival in Blaine said around 200 kids between the ages of 14 and 17 were "being rowdy" at about 7 p.m. Saturday, the station said.Several teens began fighting around 7:30 p.m., and officers tried to break it up, KARE said. Image source: KARE-TV video screenshot"As officers were restraining the active participants, other juveniles from the crowd continued to kick and punch others who were on the ground. One juvenile jumped on the back of an officer while another struck the officer in the head with her elbow. That officer was later diagnosed with a concussion," a Blaine Police Department news release noted, according to KARE.The station said overhead police drone video shows teens stepping around officers to kick individuals on the ground, teens and officers pushing each other, and observers capturing it all on cell phones. Image source: KARE-TV video screenshotAdditional Blaine cops showed up to help, along with officers from other Anoka County agencies, KARE reported, adding that the brawl continued for three minutes until an officer threatened the use of a chemical spray. With that, the teens ran into the mall, which forced officers to close the mall out of precaution, the station said, adding that the carnival was shut down as well. Two teens were arrested and charged with assault, KARE said, adding that authorities said additional charges are possible. The station added that last year's carnival also was shut down due to a fight near the Ferris wheel.Blaine's police chief, Brian Podany, appeared fed up with the teens' behavior. Image source: KARE-TV video screenshot"Grow up," Podany told KARE during an on-camera interview. "I understand you're kids, but ... there was no efforts to stop any of the violence other than by law enforcement, and it's not right." Officials told the station the carnival will reopen Wednesday and run through Sunday, adding that fencing will be set up around the carnival grounds that will enforce a single entry point. In addition, no one under 18 will be allowed into the carnival without a parent or guardian, KARE noted. Like Blaze News?
