As his term wore on‚ he exhibited increasing signs of mental decline and instability and placed limits on his opponents’ right to assemble. In an event that would become notorious‚ a massive crowd gathered to protest against the actions of the government and ended up being punished in his name with a severity that was widely considered to be at odds with his nation’s guiding principles. At the age of 81‚ nearing the end of his life‚ he was known to speak utter gibberish.  READ MORE: Biden Would Go Further Left It may sound as though I’m talking about Joe Biden‚ but this description‚ as it happens‚ also applies to George III‚ the British king who lost America and who‚ by 1819‚ the year before his death‚ was‚ as the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley put it in a famous poem‚ “old‚ mad‚ blind‚ despised.” Like Biden‚ George hung on to power for a hell of a long time: He reigned for six decades; Biden — senator for 36 years‚ vice president for eight‚ and a piece of Oval Office furniture for three — has racked up just under five decades in D.C. During some periods in the early and middle parts of his reign‚ George was popular‚ but in his third act‚ not unlike Biden‚ he came to be‚ as Shelley put it‚ “despised” by more and more of his countrymen. As for the mass protest mentioned above — which came to be a defining event of George’s reign — it took place on Aug. 16‚ 1819‚ in Manchester. About 60‚000 people gathered peacefully to call for reform in parliamentary representation; in response‚ cavalry units from were summoned to the site and ordered to charge into the crowd. Eighteen people were killed and hundreds were injured. This atrocity‚ which came to be known as the Peterloo Massacre‚ was the proximate inspiration for Shelley’s poem‚ which is entitled “England in 1819” and which‚ in its entirety‚ reads as follows:  An old‚ mad‚ blind‚ despised‚ and dying king‚— Princes‚ the dregs of their dull race‚ who flow Through public scorn‚ mud from a muddy spring‚— Rulers who neither see‚ nor feel‚ nor know‚ But leech-like to their fainting country cling‚ Till they drop‚ blind in blood‚ without a blow‚— A people starved and stabbed in the untilled field‚— An army which liberticide and prey Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield‚— Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay; Religion Christless‚ Godless‚ a book sealed‚— A Senate—Time’s worst statute unrepealed‚— Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may Burst‚ to illumine our tempestuous day. Running across this poem the other day in an anthology‚ I recognized at once the similarities between England in 1819 — as perceived by Shelley‚ anyway — and America under Joe Biden. Yes‚ there are important differences between George III and Biden‚ and between the Peterloo Massacre and Jan. 6. George was a king‚ and Joe is (supposedly) a president; only one of the protesters on Capitol Hill was killed‚ but hundreds have been harassed‚ arrested‚ prosecuted‚ and/or imprisoned.  But oh‚ the parallels between Shelley’s indictment of the British establishment under George III and the accusations that a reasonable observer could hurl at the powers behind Biden’s own throne! As Shelley writes‚ the men who surrounded George‚ and who in his last‚ doddering years were Britain’s actual rulers‚ were‚ like Biden’s current handlers‚ ignorant and uncaring mediocrities‚ hated by the people (or‚ at least‚ by the people who were sufficiently well informed to grasp what was going on); the economy‚ during George’s last years as during Biden’s presidency‚ was squeezing the people dry; then as now‚ the military (as demonstrated by its actions in the Peterloo Massacre) was morally compromised‚ as were the judiciary and mainstream religious institutions.  Shelley’s poem is a cry of outrage and despair. In its closing lines‚ however‚ he shifts suddenly from anger to hope — namely‚ the hope that “a glorious Phantom” might emerge in the midst of all this morass and set all things aright. In fact‚ upon George’s death in 1820‚ he was succeeded by his son George IV‚ who ruled for 10 years‚ after which the crown passed to another son‚ William IV‚ who lasted for seven years.  Neither of these brief reigns was particularly glorious. But after they were over‚ Queen Victoria ascended to the throne and proceeded to preside for a record-smashing 63 years over what may fairly be called Britain’s Golden Age — an era during which the U.K. became the planet’s unrivaled superpower and its foremost engine of industrial‚ scientific‚ and technical growth. Under Victoria‚ the Empire expanded greatly‚ peace and prosperity prevailed‚ and a series of parliamentary reforms accorded her subjects unprecedented freedom‚ equality‚ and educational opportunities.   Can you say “glorious Phantom”? Now‚ I haven’t seen Donald Trump compared very frequently to Queen Victoria (the differences between the two are‚ admittedly‚ quite considerable)‚ but just as Victoria embodied‚ to a remarkable degree‚ deliverance from the systemic ignominy described by Shelley‚ so Trump — ah‚ but is it really necessary for me to complete that thought? I remember learning about democracy back in grammar school. We learned about it in the context of the American Revolution: Britain’s King George III may have ruled as a capricious monarch‚ but the intrepid colonists fought for the then-novel concept of democratic self-government. A cursory glance at Merriam-Webster is instructive. That venerable dictionary defines “democracy” as “government by the people” or‚ more elaborately‚ as “a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.” Simple enough. But someone ought to remind our nation’s liberal elites and the foot soldier activists of today’s Democratic Party. On Monday‚ the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous rebuke of the recent Colorado chicanery that rendered former President Donald Trump ineligible for the state’s GOP presidential primary ballot. That all nine justices agreed with Trump’s core legal argument — state actors cannot strike from the ballot alleged “insurrectionists” absent specific implementing legislation from Congress — is nothing short of remarkable. For months‚ liberal pundits and anti-Trump legal “experts” assured us that the 14th Amendment “insurrection clause” argument for Trump’s ballot disqualification was ironclad. Who can forget how‚ after the Colorado Supreme Court legitimized Trump’s removal in December‚ one-time conservative judicial stalwart turned Trump Derangement Syndrome patient zero J. Michael Luttig opined that the court’s logic was “masterful‚” “brilliant‚” and “unassailable.” Left-wing cable news outlets platformed countless other guests who ceaselessly pushed the same argument. In the end‚ the argument garnered zero votes at the Supreme Court. Even Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson didn’t debase themselves by going along with such a half-baked‚ anti-democratic ruse. So much for “unassailable” logic! One of the great ironies of our present age is that democracy’s would-be eponymous outfit‚ the Democratic Party‚ has become an enemy of democracy itself. The fact that party activists across numerous states pursued the extraordinary tactic of literally banning their leading opponent from the ballot is emblematic. But the anti-Trump criminal prosecutions and other unsavory lawfare tactics Democrats are also now weaponizing give the game away: Democrats hate democracy and harbor immense disdain for normal Americans’ beliefs. Put simply‚ they don’t want to leave the country’s fate in our hands. Hence‚ the current bizarre spectacle of Democrats ostentatiously bragging about the need to save “our democracy” while simultaneously pursuing some of the most anti-democratic stratagems in modern American history. Anything‚ it seems‚ to prevent the American people themselves from deciding the 2024 election. To the warped Democratic mind‚ nothing is more “democratic” than preventing the actual demos from having its say. The horror! An on-air MSNBC panel during the left-wing network’s Super Tuesday coverage was paradigmatic. Analyzing exit polling from Virginia‚ hosts Rachel Maddow and Jen Psaki could not believe voters ranked immigration as their top issue. “Well‚ Virginia does have a border with West Virginia‚” Maddow quipped‚ as the others guffawed along with her. Liberal elites to Americans suffering the myriad consequences of a wide-open southern border: Drop dead. That’s literally “drop dead‚” actually‚ in the case of Laken Riley‚ the former nursing student tragically murdered two weeks ago by an illegal alien in Athens‚ Georgia. (Say her name‚ liberal media.) That’s literally “drop dead‚” as well‚ for the majority of the 110‚000-plus Americans who died of drug overdoses in 2022 — 70 percent of which were caused by fentanyl and other synthetic opioids trafficked across the border. The reality is that during Joe Biden’s presidency‚ which has overseen the most illegal immigration and the most beleaguered southern border in American history‚ every town is a “border town.” The MSNBC clowns might delude themselves to the contrary‚ as they retire at night to their gated communities‚ driven by their chauffeurs. But that reality is still reality. Those Americans who want their border secure‚ their communities safe‚ and their wages spared suppression by illegal alien labor are the “rubes” whom liberal elites are so passionate about denying from the democratic process that they will invert democracy itself to do so. Destroy democracy in order to save it — don’t you see? The good news is that most Americans will not tolerate it. The transcript of a segment from an MSNBC show is‚ no kidding‚ as follows:  Inside host and former Biden Press Secretary Jen Psaki: “[Trump] can’t run against the other and brown people and people who don’t look like him‚ like his supporters — his base of supporters coming across the — the border and scaring people and killing people or whatever he’s threatening out there. If you look at some of these exit polls — I mean‚ I live in Virginia. Immigration was the number one issue.” ReidOut host Joy Reid: “Yes.” Psaki: “Again‚ these could change in — in Virginia.” Rachel Maddow: “Well‚ Virginia does have a border with West Virginia. Very contested area.” Reid: “Build the wall!” Psaki: “But you’re thinking like — what? When I was in New Hampshire‚ people were talking about the northern border as a threat because Trump has indoctrinated people with this fear of people who do not like — look like them — being a threat to them.” Amazing. Mere weeks after an illegal immigrant made his way to Georgia and brutally murdered University of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley‚ there’s the MSNBC crew ridiculing the idea that illegal immigrants are a problem in America. My old CNN colleague Jen Psaki ridiculed the notion that Virginia‚ where she lives‚ would have voters saying that immigration is the number one issue. Apparently she has missed headlines like these: Illegal immigrant nabbed in Virginia after abducting teen in Ohio‚ taking hundreds of miles from home: police Ohio authorities are working to determine if the teenager was a victim of human trafficking And missed this from ABC 13 News in Virginia:  ‘It is so infuriating’: Reaction to illegal migrant arrested for sex crimes This ABC story reported:  CAMPBELL COUNTY‚ Va. (WSET) — Virginia leaders are reacting to sex crimes committed in our community by an alleged illegal immigrant. This comes after Renzo Montez‚ 32‚ was arrested by the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office for sex crimes with a 14-year-old girl. According to investigators‚ Montes was living in Campbell County‚ but he is a Venezuelan man‚ who illegally crossed into the United States. “It is an unmitigated humanitarian disaster that is now impacting Virginians and breaks my heart‚” said Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares. Authorities said Montes was caught by border patrol in El Paso‚ Texas in September‚ but they released him. Former Castlewood firefighter accused of having sex with teen‚ child porn possession “I think it shows every state now is becoming a border state. It is so infuriating because you realize that person should’ve never been in the country‚” Miyares said. Then there was this from Fox News:  ICE agents recapture illegal immigrant charged with rape who was released onto streets in Virginia And this:  Potential Richmond July 4 mass shooters charged as noncitizens in possession of firearm‚ police say One of the suspects in thwarted Richmond mass shooting had previously been deported  And so on … and so on … and so on. Here’s another headline‚ this one from Washington state‚ per Breitbart:  Sanctuary State Washington: Illegal Alien Charged with Killing 27-Year-Old State Trooper Christopher Gadd  In non-border states all over the country‚ illegals are being arrested after committing murder‚ rape‚ or other violent crimes. And what does the MSNBC crew do? Why‚ play the race card of course. In Psaki’s words‚ this is all really about race and “those [in America] who do not like — look like them — being a threat to them.” It’s worth recalling here that MSNBC’s fixation on race is not an unrelated one-off. Long before MSNBC was around‚ the American Left’s Democrat Party was founded by slave owners as the Party of Race. As readers in this space know‚ I have periodically written chapter and verse on the party’s two-century-plus obsession with race.  Among other things‚ there were the six Democratic Party platforms supporting slavery. The 20 that stood tall and proud for segregation. There was the opposition to the 13th‚ 14th‚ and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. As I have written earlier‚ “The 13th banned slavery. The 14th effectively overturned the infamous 1857 Dred Scott decision (made by Democratic pro-slavery Supreme Court justices) by guaranteeing due process and equal protection to former slaves. The 15th gave black Americans the right to vote.” And on and on this business of judging their fellow Americans by skin color has gone. In today’s world‚ it’s all about identity politics — identity politics being the son of segregation and grandson of slavery. Now this racism is being used by MSNBC to justify illegal immigration and excuse the murder or rape of innocent Americans like Laken Riley. A few days ago‚ Georgia Republican Rep. Mike Collins introduced the “Laken Riley Act‚” which is but the latest attempt to correct the disgraceful — not to mention dangerous — record of the Biden administration on dealing with illegal immigration.  Without question‚ the American people realize they have a problem on their hands. And that problem has nothing to do with race — and everything to do with allowing the mass invasion of the U.S. southern border by completely unvetted illegals‚ a fair number of whom have a violent record and have zero business being in this country. America is the one country on the planet where 100 percent of the population is descended from immigrants — legal immigrants of all races and religions. No American of any seriousness is “anti-immigrant.” But Americans are most certainly 100 percent in favor of vetting incomers and making sure they are safe and not someone with a violent background bent on committing murder‚ rape‚ and violence of any kind. Imagine you walk into your local bank‚ check in hand‚ only to discover that the checking account you opened just a few weeks ago is inaccessible. It’s been restricted and marked for closure. When you ask why‚ the teller shrugs. The computer screen in front of her tells her she can’t give you any other information. That’s what happened to one of the founders of the National Committee for Religious Freedom (NCRF) in May 2022. When the organization‚ co-founded by former Sen. Samuel Brownback to promote religious freedom‚ tried to ask JPMorgan Chase why its account had been closed‚ all it was able to elicit were frustratingly vague replies. Chase told NCRF that Brownback was labeled a “Political Exposed Person” and therefore was subject to heavier scrutiny — but according to internal guidelines‚ political figures aren’t supposed to be labeled as such. Nearly a year later‚ at a meeting with shareholders concerned about the bank’s apparent practice of discrimination‚ Chase CEO Jamie Dimon stated that NCRF hadn’t completed all the paperwork. There wasn’t a problem‚ he said. But it wasn’t. Not only that‚ but Chase is not the only organization “debanking” conservatives. Debanking Is a Growing Problem Just last year‚ Bank of America informed Indigenous Advance Ministries‚ a Christian charity dedicated to helping fund mission work in Uganda‚ that it would be closing its bank account‚ as well as the bank account of a local church that supported the organization. The reason given? Bank of America informed the charity that “upon review of your account(s)‚ we have determined you’re operating in a business type we have chosen not to service at Bank of America.” Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF)‚ which went to bat for both NCRF and Indigenous Advanced Ministries‚ has revealed that it is also being targeted by the financial elites. Over the last five years‚ the organization has received “16 complaints from donors in 13 states who have had their donations to ADF denied or hindered by Fidelity Charitable‚” Jeremy Tedesco‚ senior counsel and senior vice president of corporate engagement at the law firm said in a written statement for the House of Representative’s Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government. These instances are just the “tip of the iceberg‚” Tedesco said. He further stated: Systemic risk of political and religious bias pervades the financial industry‚ particularly within the largest banks and payment processors. They maintain reputational risk policies that allow them unfettered discretion to punish customers who have‚ in the institution’s view‚ problematic views. Many also have prohibitions on “hate” speech and “intolerance” that require subjective and value-based judgments on a customer’s viewpoint. It’s quite simple. If a bank doesn’t like its customers’ opinions or if the institution is worried that government regulators could punish the bank for serving certain customers‚ it might just close their accounts. Targeting Amateur Fishermen On Thursday‚ the U.S. House of Representative’s Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government heard from a panel of witnesses that included Daily Wire podcast host and psychologist Jordan Peterson; Brian Knight‚ a senior research fellow and the director of innovation and governance at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University; and Norbert Michel‚ the vice president and director of the Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives at the Cato Institute. Usually‚ congressional hearings are somewhat sleep-inducing; but if you’re the average American who likes to be able to purchase a firearm and a bible without your bank flagging your account and sending your information to the FBI‚ it should be a riveting three-hour listen. Over the last few months‚ the subcommittee has found substantial evidence that Big Government and Big Banks are colluding‚ ostensibly in the name of protecting Americans from “domestic terrorists” — i.e. those of us who occasionally splurge on some bait and tackle at Bass Pro Shops. (READ MORE: Engoron Goes Medieval on Trump) We now know that federal investigators “asked financial institutions to search customer transactions” with specific terms‚ simultaneously warning them that “purchases of ‘religious texts’ could indicate ‘extremism.'” The Office of Stakeholder Integration and Engagement in the Strategic Operations of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN)‚ which operates under the Treasury Department‚ warned banks that indicators of “extremism” might even include “transportation charges‚ such as bus tickets‚ rental cars‚ or plane tickets‚ for travel areas with no apparent purpose.'” Tedesco said in his written statement on Thursday‚ “Many conservative and religious citizens and organizations are one disgruntled activist‚ employee‚ or regulator away from losing their bank account or payment processing. Recent incidents have shown that this is happening‚ that it is accelerating‚ and that government agencies and financial institutions are all too willing to cooperate to harm our civil liberties.” He concluded‚ saying‚ “We cannot live in a free country if access to the marketplace depends on our political or religious views.” (READ MORE: Truckers Target Trump-Hating New York Judge) At this point‚ we’re no longer talking about flagging the accounts of charity organizations and right-wing political lobbyists. This is about the federal government and financial institutions working together to closely monitor the purchasing activities of individuals they’ve deemed potential domestic terrorists because of their purchasing habits. The number of attacks against Catholic and Protestant churches has skyrocketed in recent years‚ and the violence shows no sign of slowing down. The Family Research Council (FRC) has identified 915 “acts of hostility” against Christian churches since 2018‚ with the number of incidents increasing each year since.  Between January 2018 and September 2022‚ FRC tallied 420 attacks; in 2023 alone‚ it counted at least 436 attacks. Despite this massive spike in violence against churches‚ the current administration has failed to address the growing problem‚ which impacts citizens across the entire country.  Senator Calls on Biden to Uphold Rule of Law On Wednesday‚ Sen. Marco Rubio sent a letter to President Joe Biden “demanding that he address the growing number of attacks on Catholic churches.” Since May 2020‚ Catholic churches have been attacked at least 400 times. Though 142 attacks occurred over 2020–2021‚ the incidents spiked after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was leaked. Since the leak‚ there have been 236 attacks on Catholic churches alone. Florida‚ Rubio’s home state‚ “is one of the top ten states where attacks against Catholic churches are occurring‚” the senator wrote. Yet‚ despite the massive destruction caused by the attacks‚ “only 25 percent of these crimes end in an arrest.”  “These religiously motivated attacks seldom result in any consequences for offenders and are part of a larger trend of fanatical activists targeting religious institutions‚” Rubio wrote. “These attacks are not random nor are they the result of a temporary lapse in judgment by perpetrators.”  Destruction and Desecration Reveal Anti-Catholic Sentiment Far from being random acts of violence‚ many of the attacks on Catholic churches include the targeted destruction of sacred items‚ such as statues‚ religious artwork‚ or sacramental items. In early January 2023‚ the nativity scene at St. Nicholas of Tolentine in New York City was vandalized twice in the same night. That same night‚ a man broke into an abbey church in Arkansas‚ vandalized the marble altar‚ and stole two boxes that contained 1‚500-year-old relics. One week later‚ a vandal committed a series of attacks against three local Catholic churches in New Jersey‚ throwing bricks through stained glass windows and setting a flagpole and a cross on fire.  In February‚ police removed an 18-inch pipe bomb discovered behind St. Dominic Catholic Church‚ one of the oldest churches in Philadelphia. On the Seattle University campus‚ the Chapel of St. Ignatius was vandalized in April. The perpetrator slashed benches and cushions‚ scratched out the names of God on the chapel’s walls‚ and destroyed books.  Some attacks seemed to have a distinctly anti-Marian intent. In Billings‚ Montana‚ someone broke into Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church‚ stole three statues and several paintings estimated at $8‚000‚ damaged artwork‚ and spray-painted “Mary is the whore of Babylon.” The following week‚ a man poured bleach on a Marian statue and threw a statue of baby Jesus down the stairs at a church in Massachusetts. In South Carolina‚ several statues of Mary were found “severely damaged” on Mother’s Day at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Other incidents had the trappings of Satanist impulses. On June 5‚ a man broke into St. Joseph Church in New York City‚ seized the Eucharist‚ and threw it. According to the FRC report‚ the perpetrator was found “hitting himself in the head with a monstrance.” In El Paso‚ Texas‚ vandals wrote “666” on items in Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church‚ “dumped holy oil‚” and “turned crosses upside down.” Someone stole the tabernacle from St. Rita Indian Mission in September.  And at Saints Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco‚ a man received the Eucharist but did not consume it. Following a peaceful confrontation about this sacrilege‚ the man punched his confronter‚ ran out of the church‚ and deterred police by setting off a pipe bomb and igniting a Molotov cocktail‚ according to the FRC.  Political Motivations Behind Attacks In addition to anti-Catholic motivations‚ some attacks were connected to pro-abortion activism. Ahead of the ballot issue that amended the state Constitution to protect abortion‚ Catholic churches in Ohio faced harassment and vandalism.  In August‚ a church in Parma‚ Ohio‚ was vandalized‚ and the perpetrators tore down the American flag‚ ripped posters‚ and wrote several messages referencing abortion and gender ideology. A sign opposing Issue 1‚ which would enshrine abortion access in Ohio’s constitution‚ was cut in half at St. Mary’s Church in Oxford‚ Ohio‚ and other signs were stolen or vandalized.  At Cincinnati’s Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains‚ the church’s signs opposing Issue 1 were stolen and vandalized. A short drive away‚ a “Vote No on Issue 1” sign at St. Monica–St. George Church was pulled out of the ground‚ thrown away‚ and then stolen after the church recovered it. Across the city‚ the same sign was removed from church property and replaced with “Vote Yes” signs. A sign opposing Issue 1 at St. Mary’s Church in Oxford‚ Ohio was cut in half‚ and other signs were stolen or vandalized.  Catholic bishops have noted the uptick in anti-Catholic violence and commented in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops January report on religious liberty that the increased vandalism and property destruction often “involved defacement of religious icons with pro-abortion messages‚” as the Catholic News Agency reports. Since Dobbs‚ churches have reported pro-abortion graffiti‚ often including phrases like “If abortions aren’t safe‚ then neither are you” and “Jane’s Revenge‚” a reference to Roe v. Wade’s Jane Roe.
