Our Experience With Wicked Snail Anyone who has ever raised a kitten knows that the juvenile years between four months and one year are often the most difficult. One of Makoa’s favorite things is when I put the snail inside a large box so he can stalk it from outside the cardboard walls. He also loves it when I put it in a paper grocery sack and seal the end and when I let it run around under a thin sheet. By occasionally using these variations‚ I have effectively kept him in love with this toy. And since it’s not cheap‚ this kind of ongoing fascination is key to the value I see in Wicked Snail. In terms of the more technical aspects of the toy‚ I have also been impressed. It’s very durable‚ for one. My orally fixated cat has yet to damage the antennas. And when my kiddo “accidentally” chucked it across the room‚ the shell half came off but was completely undamaged and snapped right back on. The battery allows for about an hour and a half of continuous play. For Makoa‚ this often means he plays with it right up until it dies. But it recharges fairly quickly and he typically gets two to three full play sessions a day. My only major issue with this toy is it doesn’t roll well across carpets and it gets completely stuck on the shag rug in the middle of my main floor. This means I have to rescue it multiple times per play session to keep the fun going. Overall though‚ I could not be more happy with how much Makoa loves playing with Wicked Snail. It easily keeps his attention for long periods and usually has him napping for even longer afterward. Moyer was the author of the Delia Martin trilogy‚ starting with 2013’s Delia’s Shadow and followed in the subsequent two years by A Barricade in Hell and Against a Brightening Sky. Since then‚ she published the novel Brightfall—a reimagining of the tale of Robin Hood and Maid Marian—in 2019‚ Divine Heretic—a take on the Joan of Arc story—in 2020‚ Youngest in 2021‚ and Disposable Son in 2022.  Her last book‚ A Parliament of Queens—a story about three women who share the throne in a medieval-esque world—came out a couple of weeks ago on February 21‚ 2024. Moyer was from Fremont‚ California‚ and studied at Ohlone College as well as Mt. San Antonio College in Texas. She had recently moved to East Lansing. “Writing is not for the timid or faint of heart‚” Moyer wrote in a 2013 article for Writer’s Digest. “I can’t flinch or pull back because writing something is ‘hard’ or painful‚ and take the easy way around. If anything‚ that means I have to write what’s making me flinch and give it my all. The difficult and the painful bits of a story are what make it real. And I can’t be afraid of what others will think about what I write‚ or that a reader might equate a character’s thoughts and actions with mine.” Moyer was a friend and supporter of many in the fantasy community‚ who were devastated to hear of her passing. At one point‚ however‚ writer-director Denis Villeneuve said the film was four hours long‚ meaning that several scenes and sequences were left on the cutting room floor. It looks like we’ll sadly never see those scenes. According to Villeneuve in an interview with Collider (via The Hollywood Reporter)‚ those moments that didn’t make it into the final version of the film will not be released. “I’m a strong believer that when it’s not in the movie‚ it’s dead‚” he said. “I kill darlings‚ and it’s painful for me.” He added‚ “Sometimes I remove shots and I say‚ ‘I cannot believe I’m cutting this out.’ I feel like a samurai opening my gut. It’s painful‚ so I cannot go back after that and create a Frankenstein and try to reanimate things that I killed. It’s too painful. When it’s dead‚ it’s dead‚ and it’s dead for a reason. But yes‚ it is a painful project‚ but it is my job. The movie prevails. I’m very‚ I think‚ severe in the editing room. I’m not thinking about my ego‚ I’m thinking about the movie.” At least some of those removed shots feature the actor Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen‚ Nightmare Alley‚ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). In a recent interview with Movieweb for his upcoming movie‚ Asleep in My Palm‚ he shared that he filmed scenes for Part Two. Who he was playing‚ however‚ is up to speculation. “I don’t think I’m at liberty to say what the scene was‚” he told Movieweb. “I’d leave that to Denis [Villeneuve] if he wants to talk about it. I had a great time over there shooting it. And then he had to cut it because he thought the movie was too long. And I am heartbroken over that‚ but there’s no hard feelings. I loved it‚ and I can’t wait to do something else with him and we certainly plan to do that.” While we don’t know for sure‚ many on the internet think he might have played Count Hasimir Fenring‚ the husband of Lady Fenring‚ who is played in Part Two by Léa Seydoux. The count plays a non-trivial role in Frank Herbert’s book‚ and while he doesn’t show up in Herbert’s sequel‚ Dune: Messiah‚ that doesn’t necessarily mean that Villeneuve won’t incorporate the character if/when the third film gets greenlit.
