‘Let Freedom Ring’: British MP Hails Return of US as ‘Shining City Upon a Hill’ With Trump Back in Office

“The United States is once again the ‘Shining City Upon a Hill,’ to which the U.K. and, indeed, the world will once again look for leadership, for courage, for freedom.” Those are unambiguous words amplified by the Right Honorable Suella Braverman, king’s counsel and member of Parliament, former home secretary and attorney general of the United Kingdom, in her speech at the recent 2025 Margaret Thatcher Freedom Lecture of The Heritage Foundation, which honors the principles, ideals, vision, and legacy of Lady Thatcher, former prime minister of the United Kingdom. Braverman is a leading figure in the British Conservative Party, one who is renowned for her principled stance on law and order as a champion of commonsense conservatism. Braverman’s remarks at The Heritage Foundation were indeed quite timely and welcomed. More than three decades since the end of the great partnership between President Ronald Reagan and Thatcher, the West is in crisis. In our towns and cities, and on student campuses, we have been assailed by identity politics, which cast aside the great values that once delivered our countries from the threat from global communism. On our borders, great movements of people seeking fortune have swept across to bring chaos and disharmony to our communities, buckling under the strain of illegal mass immigration. All the while, we have been lectured by the self-styled “progressives” that this is not a problem and that the politics of equity, rather than meritocracy, are our future. In this year’s Margaret Thatcher Freedom Lecture, Braverman succinctly pushed back and outlined a blueprint for the West to fight back against these toxic, unacceptable ideologies and ensure the enduring prosperity of our great countries. She began her timely and powerful remarks by highlighting that “it’s about [the] dawn of freedom that I want to speak with you today, [and] that’s exactly what is happening with President [Donald] Trump returning to the White House.” Indeed, America is back. The American people have spoken and unambiguously rejected failed liberal policies. For too long, the policy agenda in Washington has been defined by well-connected special interests that have severely undercut economic freedom for ordinary hardworking Americans. Beyond the walls of the back rooms where deep-pocketed elites secure favors from their friends in government, almost no one in Washington had seemed to be listening to the American people. The reelection of Trump as president on Nov. 5 clearly disrupted that unacceptable status quo and placed America at the dawn of a new era. And by that dawn’s still-early light, we can already see the prosperous, cheerful, energetic future it portends. It is the challenge we must accept and the task we must fulfill to act with greater courage and grateful confidence in order to rebuild an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity, and civil society is truly flourishing. Ordered liberty is the fundamental foundation of the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom, which must be enhanced through greater cooperation on security and economic fronts more than ever. History shows us that security, freedom, and prosperity go hand in hand as the human spirit thrives on virtuous liberty. To that end, Braverman noted with a strong conviction rooted in conservative principles and common sense: We must find the courage to shout, “Enough is enough!” and act differently … Because only then will we have freedom. Freedom is getting up early in the morning and working hard for you and your family without being molested by oversized, bureaucratic government. Freedom is the land we farm, the schooling of our children, and freedom to walk our streets in safety. Without it, we are mere chattel slaves, and that is not a world I will ever capitulate to advocate. So, let freedom ring. More than ever, now is the time to act on that for our future. Judge Blocks Texas Online Digital ID Law, Citing Constitutional Concerns

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. The Texas online age verification law (the Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act) has been temporarily blocked by a district judge who granted a preliminary injunction motion. SCOPE is one of the laws cropping up in the US meant to better protect children on the internet, but critics are consistently pointing out that this type of legislation threatens minors’ protected speech and promotes online digital ID that curbs online anonymity for all. We obtained a copy of the order for you here. At the same time, adults’ biometric data or ID information (driver’s licenses, fingerprints) is collected by websites or apps, since the age verification mechanism here is that of exposing everyone’s age/identity, in order to determine if a user happens to be a minor. Those unwilling to surrender this personal data are in effect banned from content that they constitutionally have the right to access. The lawsuit was brought by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) non-profit on behalf of several plaintiffs and argues that SCOPE’s requirements regarding age verification, monitoring, filtering content, and targeted advertising bans are broad and vague to the point of being unconstitutional. Northern District of Texas Judge Robert Pitman agreed that the argument was good enough to grant an injunction. The court found that SCOPE was “likely” unconstitutional. Its vague nature around stifling protected speech is so pronounced that “it made it hard to know what was prohibited” – FIRE Chief Counsel Bob Corn-Revere explained. One of the provisions that additionally complicate clear interpretation of the new rules is for websites to monitor how much of their content is of an adult nature or otherwise harmful to children, and then require age verification based on that percentage. In his injunction decision, Judge Pitman expanded on what he called “indefinite meanings” of some of the definitions of harms that the law seeks to restrict access to, and noted that, “it is easy to see how an attorney-general could arbitrarily discriminate in his enforcement of the law.” One of the points FIRE representatives have made is that they hope this development would help stem the tide of similar efforts now being championed by legislators in various US states – a trend the organization refers to as “an unconstitutional bandwagon.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net.
