Media. TV4 has found itself in a storm after its disinformation campaign that the mass murderer in Örebro allegedly shouted "you should leave Europe". Now ten experienced sound engineers are demanding that TV4 explain itself - and accusing the channel of abusing their professional reputation.
"Our professional knowledge and professional reputation seem to be used as an alibi for frivolous and irresponsible click journalism", they state.

TV4 has continued to defend its publication, which took place the day after the attack in Örebro and has received considerable international attention.
The channel refers to the fact that two of their own sound engineers have concluded that it is precisely the words "you should leave Europe" that are uttered on a video recording from the school in Örebro. Responsible publisher Fredrick Malmberg calls this a proper verification and says he is confident in the information.
But in an open letter published by Kvartal, ten sound engineers are now hitting back at TV4's claim, accusing the channel of engaging in pure speculation. According to them, it is impossible to determine with certainty what is said in the recording, regardless of the technical equipment:
"We all have decades of experience in recording and editing sound. We also have access to and are familiar with the type of tools that TV4 has probably used – several of us use them daily in our professional practice. We therefore all agree with Fredrick Malmberg's description of what constitutes an 'expert' in the field. But when we discuss TV4's publication among ourselves, there is a strikingly large consensus: A professional and knowledgeable sound engineer would not have said in this situation that it is possible to interpret with any precision the meaning of the words spoken in the macabre video."
The sound engineers note that Fredrick Malmberg "makes it sound as if with special equipment and trained ears one could hear something other than what is actually heard."
"As if there was a special technical expertise that TV4 and Fredrick Malmberg have access to. Who can interpret reality for the uninitiated media consumer."
They point out that the sound could just as easily contain completely different words – or be in a language other than Swedish. They don't even agree on whether the voice belongs to a man or a woman.
The sound engineers are sharply criticizing TV4's use of their professional knowledge to legitimize its campaign and are now demanding that the channel release the unedited recording for independent review.
"Many of us in our forum have been badly affected by the fact that our professional knowledge and professional honor seem to be used as an alibi for frivolous and irresponsible click journalism," they write and conclude:
"We do not think that TV4's defense is up to the mark and we do not believe that the publication withstands further scrutiny. If TV4 wants to be transparent, they should make available exactly in which format they took the original audio and make a file without further compression or processing available for independent review. They should also provide a detailed account of the signal chain, the tools used and the settings with which they processed the audio."
