President Joe Biden did not perform all that differently in last night’s debate than he normally does. However, with Biden’s decline fully exposed in the high-stakes forum, and not covered up by teleprompters, crowds, or video editing, Democrats and the media responded with collective panic. Left-wingers from far and wide turned against the president by publicly stating that Biden had utterly failed and, in many cases, that he had shown himself to be incapable of winning the presidency. It was an incredible moment. The longstanding taboo on voicing concerns over Biden’s obvious mental decline had shattered. Just hours before, asserting that Joe Biden had cognitively lost it would have been considered right-wing disinformation. Moms for America, founded in 2004, has a threefold mission to “Empower Moms, Promote Liberty, and Raise Patriots.” This month, that mission has landed them on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s “Hate Map.” The SPLC labeled Moms for America as an “anti-government” organization for advocating “individual liberties and constitutional principles which entails fighting against government overreach and standing up to efforts to restrict individual liberties.” The Southern Poverty Law Center was founded in 1971 as a civil rights law firm. The group has since evolved from pioneering civil rights to publishing its famous “Hate Map.” The map displays what the SPLC has labeled “hate groups.” The SPLC lumps the “hate groups” together under ideological categories that include “Constitutional Sheriffs,” “Christian Identity,”  “General Hate,” and “Radical Traditional Catholicism.” Placement on the map is not without consequences.  Amazon has used the map to bar organizations from using their Amazon Smile program to receive donations. More serious consequences include an attempted mass shooting at Family Research Council Headquarters in 2012. The potential shooter saw that SPLC had labeled the Family Research Council as “anti-gay” and told the FBI that the Hate Map led him right to their door. Critics have called the SPLC “extreme” for continuing to release hate maps that include pro-life and parental choice organizations on the same list as the KKK and neo-Nazi organizations. The group has also faced several scandals that have discredited the organization, including the resignation of co-founder Morris Dees after allegations of misogyny and racism. Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un signed the strongest agreement between their respective countries in decades. Their strategic partnership has been revived because each of their countries has been shunned by the West and pressured by sanctions. In the case of Russia, this has especially been the case following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The meeting between Putin and Kim reflects a larger trend across the world: A patchwork of alliances among dictatorships is emerging, with the clear intent to challenge America’s global leadership.  Their meeting began with Putin thanking Kim for North Korea’s support in their shared “fight against the imperialist hegemonistic policies of the U.S. and its satellites” — a clear demonstration of their intent to challenge the West. Kim proclaimed his “fiery friendship” with Putin brings the countries closer now than during the Cold War and pledged “full support and solidarity to the Russian government, army and people in carrying out the special military operation in Ukraine to protect sovereignty, security interests and territorial integrity.” The agreement includes a security clause that stipulates that if either country is attacked, the other will come to its defense.  The invasion of Ukraine marked a key turning point in the relationship between Russia and North Korea. In 2022, North Korea became the third country to recognize the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, two Russian-occupied regions in eastern Ukraine. In response, Ukraine cut official ties with North Korea. Since then, Moscow has purchased millions of munitions from Pyongyang to use in Ukraine. In February 2024, Russia and North Korea further demonstrated their growing alliance by sending North Korean workers to support the Russian workforce. This is a direct violation of UN sanctions that prohibit the employment of North Korean laborers.  This week, Pyongyang allegedly pledged to send military troops to Ukraine within the month.  These negotiations underscore Russia’s frantic efforts to win allies from the few possible candidates who remain. ***** During the Cold War, Stalin would never have visited North Korea to prop up Kim Il-sung’s regime.  Yet today, Putin’s Russia is significantly more vulnerable, forcing him to resort to building up relations with a country as fundamentally broken as North Korea  Putin is isolated and desperate. Oklahoma superintendent Ryan Walters announced in a board meeting on Thursday that public schools will incorporate the Bible into the classroom. The superintendent’s letter to all school districts said that the state would provide teaching materials and that they should comply with the policy immediately. Walter’s decision to incorporate biblical instruction follows recent actions that encourage religious education in public schools. In early June, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a bill allowing students to be excused during the school day to receive religious instruction. Additionally, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signed legislation in May that would allow the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms.  Once implemented, the letter from the superintendent states that Oklahoma public schools will be “required to incorporate the Bible, which includes the Ten Commandments.” The Oklahoma attorney general also noted that state law already supported Bibles in the classroom and that teachers can utilize them.  “In the Oklahoma academic standards under Title 70 on multiple occasions, the Bible is a necessary historical document to teach our kids about the history of this country, to have a complete understanding of Western civilization, to have an understanding of the basis of the legal system,” Walters stated at the board meeting.  Oklahoma kids will learn that the Bible and the Ten Commandments are foundational for western civilization. It’s Complicated.  changing horses this late in the race, with just five months left, is a daunting, if not impossible, task. Party rules essentially prohibit it without the nominee’s consent, and Biden has repeatedly sworn off stepping down. Moreover, there’s no smooth path to doing so even if the party can coalesce around an alternative – and no consensus over who would play the role of party savior. The most immediate problem is that polls show Kamala Harris’ job approval ratings are no better than Biden’s. Bypassing her for, say, Newsom would face an obvious obstacle: How could the modern Democratic Party, which champions diversity, equity, and inclusion, cast aside a woman whose heritage is African American and Asian? No matter how telegenic and articulate he may be, the intra-party critique writes itself: Gavin Newsom is a privileged white male from the same state – and same city – as Kamala Harris. Are the Democratic delegates really going to cast her aside because Biden is too old? Still, rules do exist for switching nominees if the party’s nominee is incapacitated or opts to step aside. Biden may decide it’s time to do so, considering the constant second-guessing he will inevitably endure if he remains on the trail. He would, of course, have the option of serving out the final months of his term in the White House, as Lyndon Johnson did in 1968. Theoretically, at least, a rancorous intra-party battle could take place at the August convention in Chicago, though it could set off a free-for-all among Democrats.
