An illegal immigrant from El Salvador has been arrested in Maryland in connection with the murder of a two-year-old child. The Prince George’s County Police Department arrested 25-year-old Nilson Trejo-Granados‚ a fifth suspect in the case‚ for the murder of two-year-old Jeremy Poou Caceres. According to the ICE records‚ the Montgomery County Police Department arrested Trejo-Granados on March 21‚ 2023‚ and charged him with theft. While those charges remain pending‚ ICE lodged an Immigration Detainer on Trejo-Granados with the Montgomery County Detention Center on March 22‚ 2023; however‚ the agency says MCDC refused to honor the detainer and Trejo-Granados was released by MCDC on March 27‚ 2023. MCPD arrested Trejo-Granados on September 26‚ 2023‚ and charged him with theft again‚ and attempt to obstruct and hindering. ICE lodged an Immigration Detainer with the MCDC on Trejo-Granados‚ once more‚ on Sept. 27‚ 2023; however‚ MCDC released Trejo-Granados from custody on October 12‚ 2023. Per Daily Mail: On February 8‚ Jeremy and his mother were walking on Kanawha Street in Langley Park when shots were fired between two groups of men. The toddler and his mother were caught in the crossfire‚ and Jeremy was fatally struck. He was taken to Children’s National hospital‚ where he was pronounced dead. Law enforcement officers say the gunfire was not intended for Jeremy and his mom. Prior to the fatal encounter‚ Trejo-Granados‚ according to ICE and police records‚ has had several previous run-ins with the law. In March of last year‚ he was charged by the Montgomery police with theft. That arrested prompted ICE to lodge an Immigration Detainer on the criminal. The local police department‚ however‚ refused to honor the detainer and subsequently released Trejo-Granados back into the public.

At a Jan. 12 meeting with Catholic communicators from France‚ the pope skipped reading his prepared text because‚ he told the group‚ “I have a bit of bronchitis‚ and I can’t speak well.” In late November and early December‚ he also suffered from what he described as a very serious bronchial infection. “Thank God it was not pneumonia‚” he told a group of health care managers. “I no longer have a fever‚ but I am still on antibiotics and things like that‚” he had said. He had canceled his appointments Nov. 25 because of what the press office described as “flu-like symptoms” and went that afternoon to a Rome hospital for a CT scan of his chest. He had undergone surgery in 1957 to remove part of one of his lungs after suffering a severe respiratory infection. He has insisted the operation has had no lasting impact on his health.
