After Disastrous Debate, PBS’s Barron-Lopez Parrots Biden Campaign Happy Talk

Taxpayer-supported PBS kept its News Hour crew on deck for Thursday night’s first (and only?) Trump-Biden debate of the 2024 presidential election cycle, airing on CNN and simulcast on PBS. While other liberal networks were loaded with panic, PBS's White House reporter stuck to repeating the desperate campaign talking points.  While Biden’s doddering, decrepit performance couldn’t be ignored (so much for recent PBS-aired claims that clips of Biden's decline were "edited") Laura Barron-Lopez launched PBS’s 17-minute post-debate discussion by spinning hard for Biden. Barron-Lopez allowed, very mildly, that “The Democrats that I’ve been in contact with were not necessarily happy with the president’s performance [oh really now?]....they felt as though he got a bit stronger as the night went on, a bit more clear, drew more contrasts as the night went on.” The Democrats she talked to said Biden didn’t strike strong enough contrasts on abortion, immigration, and January 6. But then she relayed partisanship from the horse’s mouth – the Biden campaign: Laura Barron-Lopez: The campaign on the other hand, a campaign source was texting me, saying that their internal polling, this is of course campaign polling, but their live internal polling, the dials as they were listening to voters as the debate was going on, they said that that internal polling showed that when Trump personally attacked Biden, called him the worst president, or when Trump tried to talk about the “suckers and losers” comments, which he made regarding veterans, which his chief of staff John Kelly said that he said, that when Trump tried to talk about that, that voters didn’t like Trump’s responses on those things, that they weren’t happy with that at all. And that they also were not -- voters turned against Trump when they heard him talking about January 6 and the exchange between Biden and Trump on January 6, and when President Biden called Trump a convicted felon, that also seemed to register poorly for Trump with those voters. PBS congressional reporter Lisa Desjardins was far more blunt, noting “the Trump team, Republicans, are declaring victory, that Biden came across just as the GOP said he would, that he “looked like someone had a hard time finding his words and in the beginning debate especially, that was the case.” She even brought up dark Democratic dreams of a replacement candidate. Lisa Desjardins: House Democrats are in a very dark place right now…there is, I will say, in the ether, there are some even sort of raising this idea, like, should this be our nominee? Now that -- this is the worst moment. This is the worst moment. Is it realistic to think that there’s actually going to be a change in nominee? No, I don’t think so, and Democratic leadership that I’m also texting with, says no, that’s ridiculous. But that is how bad this moment is…. After that influx of reality, Barron-Lopez tried more happy talk, saying former Republicans wanted to hit the trail for President Biden and that the right-leaning state of North Carolina was “maybe gettable” for Biden. Oddly, the PBS News Hour hosts promoted its own online “fact check” both before and after the debate but as it turned out, PBS farmed out the actual “fact checking” to Politifact, which has its own liberal bent. Here’s a taste. “Trump’s outlandish immigration claim” that Biden “allowed millions of people to come in here from prisons, jails and mental institutions” warranted a Pants on Fire! rating (as in “Liar, Liar…”). The Biden headlines were more favorable: “Biden’s close to the mark about immigration reductions.” The Daily Signal issued its own less tilted, more comprehensive fact-check.

CBS Torches ‘Stumbling’ Biden for ‘Painful’ Debate, Argues Dems Can’t ‘Move Forward’

While ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Today tried to downplay President Joe Biden’s infamously bad debate performance Thursday night, Friday’s CBS Mornings offered a full court press calling out Biden as “stumbling” and “poor” in what was a “painful” job squaring off against former President Trump and added his team’s years of scoffing at age concerns coming back to bite them. Even co-host and Democratic donor Gayle King was forlorn from the get-go, fretting in the Eye Opener that Biden was “fac[ing] backlash from inside his own party after a very shaky debate performance” and stating afterward that “Biden failed to land any knockout blows and his stumbling performance is raising alarm bells for many Democrats this morning.”     King tossed to chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes with a zinger: “It’s never good when members of your own party are basically saying Houston we have a problem.” Cordes said Democrats “are using words like disappointing and painful to describe what they saw last night” with a split between those who believe there’s “still…an opportunity to rebound” and “others worry that last night’s performance was a sign of things to come.” “From the very start of the debate it was clear something was wrong….It wasn’t just the President’s voice weakened by what aides described as a days long cold. It was also his answers, which sometimes meandered or trailed off,” she explained. She did have a line about Biden being a distraction from Trump, saying Biden’s “struggles drew attention away from a blizzard of false claims from Donald Trump” on a whole host of issues. During a panel discussion that included longtime CBS analyst/correspondent/host John Dickerson, co-host Tony Dokoupil brutally ripped Biden and called out those who were surprised by these mental stumbles. Surprisingly, Dickerson was able to play it straight without too many Trump potshots (click “expand”): DOKOUPIL: That wasn’t one bad performance from the President. There’s been a lot leading up to this. I’ve been covering the age concerns for two years. And, at times, you’re made to feel crazy for asking the question, and voters are worried. We’ve seen it from polls. You’ve got inside information from the Biden camp. But — but first, I just want to go to you, John, big picture, Americans are processing something that could be very monumental today. What — what stood out to you? DICKERSON: They are. What they’re processing is — I mean, you have two candidates, the country said they don’t want either of them, told pollsters regularly, and they got a debate that affirmed underlining their view that they don’t like either one of these candidates. The bigger problem is for the incumbent President, who as many supporters in his own party said, he had one test last night and that was to overcome these questions about his age by his performance. Joe Biden a lot of times will say to the questions about his age, he will say just watch me. KING: Mmhmm. DICKERSON: People did for 90 minutes. Nancy said in her piece that some Democrats believe that Biden can still rebound. Well, last night was supposed to be the rebound from these questions. To her credit, King bemoaned how “painful” the viewing experience was, but also blasted Team Biden’s excuse that the President struggled because he had a cold, noting “a cold doesn’t force you to lose your train of thought” and “just throw things out randomly that to many people made no sense.” In between Dickerson blasting Trump for his “unending river of lies and distortions” and that the panic inside the Democratic Party goes beyond their “tradition of hand wringing and…bedwetting”, Dokoupil called out Biden for not being able to, regardless of what one thinks about it, “explain and communicate” his “record to the American public”. King had more withering takes in the second half-hour as she began a panel with former Obama official Joel Payne, and former longtime RNC flack Doug Heye, calling Biden’s performance a “trainwreck” and wondering how her guy will “recover from this.” For Heye’s part, he gave a history lesson (click “expand”): HEYE: Donald Trump had the debate that he wanted to. He put his — he was on offense and on basically every issue Joe Biden was on defense. And when he wasn’t talking, and we saw the split screen, he didn’t look like he was all there. I tell you, I’m such a Frank Sinatra fan that I hosted an hour on Seriously Sinatra a couple weeks ago. And I thought last night of seeing Frank Sinatra at the end of his career. One minute, Come Fly With Me is going well — KING: Yeah. HEYE: — and a few minutes later he can’t remember the words to My Way. And, to Joel’s point, this is the problem of you fix this with more of him. Joe Biden is going to have more nights like this and days like this than fewer because he’s at an age that faster and he’s still in a job that ages you faster, as well. The most comical part of this entire segment came when Payne tried to compare Biden to Barack Obama (who also bombed in the first debate), which both King and Dokoupil were quick on the trigger to shoot that down. Dokoupil also leveled this scorching takedown: Joel, I don’t know how the Democrats move forward here because we’ve had Democrats on for — for months and months and asked them the age question, are you concerned, voters are concerned. Tell us what it’s like, you were with the President behind closed doors. And they all act like he’s doing trigonometry and a Rubik’s cube and spinning a basketball and balancing the budget... It’s hard to believe that now, so what can they possibly say? They had one final segment on the debate, which led off the second hour and consisted of election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa proclaiming Team Biden’s strategy wouldn’t budge from its all-but-permanent strategy of apocalyptic rhetoric about Trump and the GOP. Here again, Dokoupil absolutely torched Biden (and his handlers) for hiding from press interview and press conferences (i.e. events that provide for unscripted moments). When Costa said it’s because Biden and his team see the press as ageists, Dokoupil fired back it’s because “I talk to regular people” and they “have those concerns, and that’s why we’re talking about them” (click “expand”): DOKOUPIL: Joe Biden is a President who gave fewer press conferences and major interviews than any President in decades. You have to go back to Reagan or before that. He passed up the Super Bowl interview on CBS this year, just didn’t want to do it. That’s tens of millions of people. What — how do you expect him to make this pivot that apparently people inside the White House expect him to do when he has not been out there, not in 2020 and not until now? COSTA: It’s not so much a pivot, it’s going to be shining an even brighter spotlight on Trump. They look at the schedule and look at the calendar and say Trump has sentencing in New York, he faces a possible jail sentence on July 11. We’ll be covering that closely. Then there’s the Republican convention. The running mate. Can he bring the attention to democracy and Trump? Can he bring it back to abortion rights? He tried during the debate, I’m told by his top advisers, they wished he had done more of it. In terms of interviews, he’s not someone who really likes the press at this time. Since day one of his campaign, I’ve been told by his friends he’s been frustrated by press coverage, people he thinks in the press think he’s too old, he’s covered in a way he believes is ageist, and that has really influenced how he does interviews, how he interacts with the press. That’s the status quo inside of Biden world. DOKOUPIL: Well, look, I work for — I work for the media, I’m in the press, but I talk to regular people, that’s my whole job. And regular people have those concerns, and that’s why we’re talking about them. To see the relevant CBS transcript from June 28, click here.

Debate Disarray: The View Blames CNN, Wants New Candidate, Attacks GOP

President Biden’s debate performance was so abysmal, not even the Cackling Coven of ABC’s The View could ignore or spin what millions of Americans witnessed. During their Friday show, the cast was in disarray as they suggested CNN did something to the President, called for a new Democratic candidate, claimed the Republicans were the ones who needed someone new, and desperately stood by their man in at least one instance. The most asinine commentary came from moderator Joy Behar near the end of their first segment when she seemed to suggest that the debate host, CNN did something that caused Biden act like a senile dotard. Her proof? Biden attended a watch party with supporters: There was something about the debate that threw him into the state he was in. Because watch this. While Donald Trump was probably enjoying his celebratory platter of cheeseburgers, President Biden made an appearance at a watch party a little while after the debate and he scarcely resembled the guy from earlier in the evening. This is really unbelievable. Near the top of the show, pretend-independent co-host Sara Haines admitted the debate was “really hard to watch” and called for Biden “to step down and be replaced” as the Democratic Party candidate. She even seemed to suggest Biden was set up for failure by his own team to force him out with enough time until the convention and election: And I think Biden's team saw it coming. I think that's why they pushed for an earlier debate so they'd have time to change course if needed, but they've got to act fast and I would implore those closest with the President to have the very hard conversations they're going to need to have. And not just for political ramifications, for humanity, for his integrity, and for his legacy, which I mean, that's all on the line right now.     “And Democrats need to stop spinning the age problem. We have sat here and Alyssa has repeatedly brought up that a lot of people are concerned with his age. And over and over Democrats have twisted themselves into a pretzel to say, ‘don't believe your lying eyes. It's not true,’” she decried, while also admitting The View was guilty of the same thing. She did add that she would still vote for Biden. Faux-conservative co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin followed up by admitting she “was genuinely in shock last night watching this” and that Biden “was stunningly worse than I expected.” She urged Democrats to find a new candidate if they were serious about their claims about former President Trump being a threat to democracy. She also claimed the Trump campaign was scared of that possibility: But here’s the thing, Biden has been running on Trump being a threat to our democracy, he’s a threat to our values. I agree with him on that; Donald Trump is a threat to American democracy. We need someone who can beat him, so I think -- I've been told for a long time, put country before -- country before party and support Joe Biden. He needs to put country before his own ambition and he needs to step aside and pass the baton. Because I'm telling you right now, Trump world is scared when they're hearing rumblings there could be someone else on the ticket. They know that any other Democrat will wipe … the floor with Donald Trump. Up next was staunchly racist and anti-Semitic co-host Sunny Hostin (the descendant of slave owners) conceded “Biden lost that debate,” but lashed out at Republicans and shouted about how they were the party that had replace their candidate, not Democrats (Click “expand”): HOSTIN: But what I will say this, I think it's really ironic that we're the only party talking about needing to replace our nominee. I think it's really ironic that the party that should be pressuring their candidate to step aside is the Republican Party! (…) Their nominee is a convicted felon, he's facing hundreds of charges for criminal activity and has been proven to be a racist, a business fraud, liable for sexual abuse, an insurrectionist, and as Biden said he has the morals of an alley cat! Republicans need to be holding him accountable! The majority of the party which has been cowardly and feckless and complicit and enabling in allowing Trump's racism, bullying, his demogery [sic] BEHAR: Misogyny. HOSTIN: Misogyny. Why are we as Democrats, those of us that are Democrats, calling for our nominee to change?! The other fake conservative, Ana Navarro began by anointing Democrats as superior humans above Republicans. “I've always said to you that Republicans and Democrats are cut from a different cloth. Democrats are exquisite, they precious, they're idealists,” she bellowed. She then reaffirmed her membership as part of the Biden cult. “Until Joe Biden tells me he's giving up, I'm not giving up on Joe Biden,” she boasted to applause from the audience. “And so to me the binary choice remains the same. He looked elderly yesterday. He sounded elderly. He is elderly, but the choice is no different. It is a very old man versus a very bad man.” The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read: ABC’s The View June 28, 2024 11:02:24 a.m. Eastern (…) [Audience cheers] ANA NAVARRO: Somebody is happy and enthusiastic today! [Cheers] JOY BEHAR: I think they’re on medication. [Laughter] SUNNY HOSTIN: Most of us are mourning. BEHAR: Mourning, yes, but let's not get too depressed yet because I'm assuming that you are all saw last night the debates, right? President Biden and Donald Trump went head-to-head in their first 2024 presidential debate on CNN. And while Biden raised concerns with a hoarse, occasionally weak delivery Trump lied dozens of times in a nice, clear voice. (…) 11:04:16 a.m. Eastern BEHAR: What was going on through your head as you watched this last night? SARA HAINES: It was really hard to watch, and it kind of pains me to say this today, but I think President Biden needs to step down and be replaced. BEHAR: You do? HAINES: If we -- if we want to defeat Donald Trump in November, I absolutely think that. And I think Biden's team saw it coming. And Democrats need to stop spinning the age problem. We have sat here and Alyssa has repeatedly brought up that a lot of people are concerned with his age. And over and over Democrats have twisted themselves into a pretzel to say, “don't believe your lying eyes. It's not true.” And at this table we said, “look, Joy’s 81!” BEHAR: Must we keep repeating that? [Laughter] HAINES: Sorry. Joy Behar at 81 is not Joe Biden at 8 and that was on full display last night. But let me be clear, if November comes and President Biden and President Trump are on the ticket, I will 100 percent be voting for President Biden because the alternative to is too scary for me. But I fear that many people in this country do not feel the same way. ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: So, I was genuinely in shock last night watching this. Even though I've had concerns for a couple of years about Biden’s ages, it was stunningly worse than I expected. The performance, I think within the first 90 seconds it was kind of baked in and I think a lot of people tuned out some of the later parts of the debate. I want to be clear, Donald Trump was a mess, he lied his way through it, but Joe Biden's performance was so bad that it eclipsed everything that Donald Trump said. BEHAR: Say that again. HOSTIN: It eclipsed. FARAH GRIFFIN: It eclipsed the performance of Donald Trump because the distraction was on Biden's performance. But here’s the thing, Biden has been running on Trump being a threat to our democracy, he’s a threat to our values. They know that any other Democrat will wipe -- BEHAR: Is that true? FARAH GRIFFIN: They will wipe the floor with Donald Trump. Mark my words, if it's Trump versus Biden, Trump is going to – [Crosstalk] BEHAR: We only have 40 days. FARAH GRIFFIN: Well, to the convention, but we have 130 to the election. HOSTIN: Look, I think what we saw was Biden lost that debate. I think that is an accurate depiction of what happened. Blame it on a cold, blame it on his stuttering, blame it on over-preparation. Whatever. But he did lose. Maybe he needs to go. Maybe he needs to be honest with himself and the American people. He can bow out at this time with grace and dignity. He has a record he can be proud of. But what I will say this, I think it's really ironic that we're the only party talking about needing to replace our nominee. I think it's really ironic that the party that should be pressuring their candidate to step aside is the Republican Party! Their nominee – [Applause] Their nominee is a convicted felon, he's facing hundreds of charges for criminal activity and has been proven to be a racist, a business fraud, liable for sexual abuse, an insurrectionist, and as Biden said he has the morals of an alley cat! [Applause] [Croasstalk] NAVARRO: I'll tell you -- I'll answer that and I've always said to you that Republicans and Democrats are cut from a different cloth. HOSTIN: Yes. NAVARRO: Democrats are exquisite, they precious, they're idealists. Look, I've known Joe Biden and I love Joe Biden and I've known Joe Biden for over 20 years. I've never seen Joe Biden like I saw him last night. It is worrisome, but to me the binary -- Until Joe Biden tells me he's giving up, I'm not giving up on Joe Biden. [ Applause] And so to me the binary choice remains the same. He looked elderly yesterday. He sounded elderly. He is elderly, but the choice is no different. It is a very old man versus a very bad man. BEHAR: Old also, by the way. NAVARRO: It is a very -- it is a man who speaks with a weak voice but tells me the truth in a weak elderly voice and a man who lies with impunity! He is a machine gun of lies! And he does it with a stronger voice. So, I'm not going to judge Joe Biden on 90 bad minutes. I'm going to judge Joe Biden on his lifetime career of putting this country first, of putting you first, of putting women's rights first, and I'm going to judge Trump on four debacles of years – [Applause] [Crosstalk] FARAH GRIFFIN: Joe Biden could not get through that debate and convey what either of you just did. I was dying for Biden to do better. He could not articulate a vision, the threat of Trump, get through a policy statement. The stakes are too high in this election. They are foundationally too high to run this man. BEHAR: There was something about the debate that threw him into the state he was in. Because watch this. While Donald Trump was probably enjoying his celebratory platter of cheeseburgers, President Biden made an appearance at a watch party a little while after the debate and he scarcely resembled the guy from earlier in the evening. This is really unbelievable. (…)

Glenn Beck: Our country is in ‘clear and present DANGER’ after last night's debate

The CNN Presidential Debate between President Biden and former President Trump went worse than anyone could have imagined. “Last night I watched something I’ve never seen before,” Glenn Beck comments, horrified. “This country just continues to get more and more bizarre.” The horror show began as soon as Biden opened his mouth, when Jake Tapper asked him his first question about inflation. “When he opened up his mouth, and that came out,” Glenn says, mocking Biden’s mousey, lost tone, “it was breathtaking.” However, Glenn notes, “That’s probably the clearest he was all night.” The debate only continued to get worse, with Trump at one point not responding to a point Biden made about the border, because he couldn’t understand what he said. “It is the most restrained I have ever seen Donald Trump,” Glenn says. While Glenn finds it “terrifying” that “this is the weakest our president has ever appeared,” he does find one thing more terrifying than that about the debate. “I am so angry today, that I haven’t heard one single person on television or in the political realm talk about the country. They’re all talking about an election. ‘How do we replace him before the convention? How do we get him off the ticket? How do we get this man away from the football?’” he says. “Do you know what our enemies were thinking last night? This country is in more danger, clear and present danger, than we have been, I believe possibly, in my lifetime,” he continues. “What the hell is wrong with us?” he asks. “We are in more trouble, not because of Joe Biden, we’re in more trouble because people are not recognizing the danger that is right in front of us." Massachusetts to ban illegal aliens from sleeping at Boston’s Logan Airport

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) announced Friday that illegal aliens will soon no longer be allowed to sleep at Boston Logan International Airport.Reports from earlier this month stated that the number of illegal immigrants residing at the airport appears to be increasing. More than 100 individuals are sleeping on the floor in the baggage claim area on makeshift beds and air mattresses, the New York Post previously reported.Beginning on July 9, the illegal aliens will be forced to leave the airport. Healey’s administration stated they would be offered accommodations at a new overflow site located in Norfolk. The neighborhood’s former Bay State Correctional Center has been converted into a temporary shelter.'In the best interest of families and travelers and staff.'Healey’s administration previously claimed that it plans to use the facility as a shelter for illegal immigrants for six to 12 months. The site can house approximately 450 people, or 140 families, according to WBTS-TV.The state aims to help the illegal aliens relocate “where they have family or another option for a safe place to stay,” WBZ reported.Massachusetts, the only right-to-shelter state in the country, ran out of shelter space in November after providing accommodations to 7,500 families. Since then, the Healey administration has been relying on temporary emergency overflow sites to house pregnant women and families with children under 21 years old. Emergency Assistance Director Scott Rice said, “This is in the best interest of families and travelers and staff at Logan, as the airport is not an appropriate place for people to seek shelter.”Rice previously explained that the new overflow site features dorm-like rooms, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, a common room, and offices.“We are going to continue to spread the word that Massachusetts is out of shelter space and that, if families are traveling to Massachusetts, they need to be prepared with a plan for housing that does not include Logan Airport or our Emergency Assistance shelters,” Rice added.WBTS reported Wednesday that 20 to 25 families have already moved into the former decommissioned prison turned overflow site.Rice stated that the administration has been focusing on moving individuals from shelters into “more stable housing.”“With this progress, the recent opening of a new safety-net site in Norfolk and the new nine-month length of stay policy, we are now in a position to end the practice of families staying overnight in the airport,” Rice explained.Like Blaze News?
