Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), a high-profile member of the leftist “Squad,” suffered a major setback on Monday in her bid to become the top Democrat on the powerful House Oversight Committee. Her colleague, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), earned more support in a vote by members of the Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee. Multiple journalists, citing insider sources, said the final tally was 34-27. POLITICO reported the full caucus is expected to have a final vote on Tuesday and noted that such a vote typically matches the steering panel’s recommendation. However, the outcome is not a sure thing. “AOC has a really shot to win inside full Democratic Caucus. That’s a ‘better room’ for her, says one Democrat,” Punchbowl News co-founder John Bresnahan shared in posts to X on Monday. He added: “Sources close to AOC says she intends to move ahead with this contest in the full Democratic Caucus despite Steering Cmte vote. AOC feels good about her chances of winning, per sources.” Ocasio-Cortez and Connolly are competing to take on the role left behind by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who opted instead to campaign for the ranking member position on the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), who has held either the chairman or ranking member position in the panel for the past several years, bowed out of the race after Raskin began to vie for the top spot. The 35-year-old spoke about pushing back on President-elect Donald Trump’s second-term agenda in a letter to Democrat colleagues announcing her campaign to become the ranking member. Oversight Committee Democrats “must balance our focus on the incoming president’s corrosive actions and corruption with a tangible fight to make life easier for America’s working class,” she wrote. Axios and others have reported that Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who underwent hip surgery after falling over the weekend, has been urging Democrats to support 74-year-old Connolly.

"The roaring started. It started far off to my right side. So far, I could barely hear it. I thought it was a person messing with me from like a mile or two away. But it got closer SO QUICKLY!"The following account was forwarded to me:"In 2018 I got a super easy job as a security guard for a natural gas pipeline construction project in rural Ohio. This was outside of Minerva, home of the locally famous "Minerva Monster" story from the 70s or 80s. My job was to just sit at the entrance to this construction site to make sure no one sabotaged or stole construction equipment, which never happened so I mostly did literally nothing from 7pm to 7am.There were 2 houses within a mile of where I was and most nights their dogs would bark all night in some kind of yelling match with the coyotes. It was just a constant that you could rely on. Dogs barking, coyotes yipping, and occasionally a cow or two mooing in between with a neverending chorus of crickets and frogs in the background.One night in August, around 2am, EVERYTHING went quiet. It was the weirdest most eerie abrupt silence. It gave me goosebumps. I genuinely thought there might be an earthquake or something about to happen. And it stayed silent for about an hour and I was anxious the entire time. Then, the roaring started. It started far off to my right side. So far, I could barely hear it. I thought it was a person messing with me from like a mile or two away. But it got closer SO QUICKLY. Here is the recording.This thing was vocalizing every couple of seconds and at some points, it sounds pretty pissed at something. The sound quickly crossed my field of hearing in about 5.5 minutes it went from out of earshot on my right, crossed in front of me, and then was out of earshot on my left. I cannot describe how FAST this thing had to be moving to cover that kind of distance in that short of a time. At its closest, the sound reverberated in my chest and literally rattled the windows of my car.I've spent much of my life fishing, hunting, camping, and hiking in Ohio. I know every kind of sound of every kind of animal Ohio has to offer. The ONLY animal explanation I will accept for this recording is MAYBE a beagle or some kind of hound baying but even then I don't believe it I could just kind of see it could be that possible. People have tried to tell me this is a deer and I laugh at them. Some people think it sounds like a rusty gate or machinery but I don't really hear that and the way it reverberated is not how squeaky rusty sounds carry through the woods." Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is going on offense against Trump’s foreign policy worldview, calling on him Monday in a published essay to reject America First’s “flirtation with isolation and decline.” McConnell, the longtime Senate Republican leader, is also urging the incoming second Trump administration to embrace many foreign policy positions that Trump notably rejected during the campaign, including support for additional foreign aid and free trade agreements, solidarity with NATO, and more weapons transfers to Ukraine. “The [Trump] administration will face calls from within the Republican Party to give up on American primacy,” McConnell wrote in the essay for Foreign Affairs. “It must reject them. To pretend that the United States can focus on just one threat at a time, that its credibility is divisible, or that it can afford to shrug off faraway chaos as irrelevant is to ignore its global interests and its adversaries’ global designs. America will not be made great again by those who simply want to manage its decline.” “The response to four years of weakness must not be four years of isolation,” McConnell added. McConnell claims that Trump’s deterrence of aggression by China cannot be achieved without preventing a Russian victory in Ukraine. “Standing up to China will require Trump to reject the myopic advice that he prioritize that challenge by abandoning Ukraine,” McConnell wrote in Foreign Affairs. “A Russian victory would not only damage the United States’ interest in European security and increase U.S. military requirements in Europe; it would also compound the threats from China, Iran, and North Korea.” Trump, who has promised to bring a quick end to the Russia-Ukraine war, has criticized President Joe Biden’s decision to escalate tensions with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the final months of his presidency. “It’s crazy what’s taking place. It’s crazy. I disagree very vehemently with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia,” Trump told Time magazine during his interview as its 2024 Person of the Year, published Thursday. “Why are we doing that? We’re just escalating this war and making it worse. That should not have been allowed to be done. Now they’re doing not only missiles, but they’re doing other types of weapons. And I think that’s a very big mistake.” McConnell’s critique of Trump’s foreign policy record and worldview follows the president-elect’s decisive electoral victory against Democrats’ presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, which marked the first time a Republican candidate won the so-called popular vote since 2004. McConnell was reportedly one of four senators who tanked Trump’s nomination of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., as attorney general and has yet to meet with Pete Hegseth or Tulsi Gabbard, his nominees for defense secretary and director of national intelligence. Though McConnell has stepped down from Senate GOP leadership, he has pledged to spend the remainder of his time in the Senate pushing back against Trump’s foreign policy worldview. The Kentucky Republican will be the incoming chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s defense subcommittee, giving him a high profile to advocate a larger defense budget and additional military aid for Ukraine. “Members of my own party now contend that, somehow, the stability of markets and the deterrence of adversaries are achievable without tending to the requirements of American hard power,” McConnell said during a keynote speech Nov. 12 at an American Enterprise Institute event celebrating the Kentucky Republican’s foreign policy views. “Confronting this particular challenge is where I now place my focus,” McConnell said. “Shoring up American primacy, combatting the dangerous tendency toward isolationism, and urgently restoring America’s hard power: This is how I will spend a great deal of the time I have left in public life.” McConnell, who is up for reelection in 2026, has not commented on whether he plans to seek an eighth term.
