Aside from those working as emergency responders‚ few of us are called upon to act in life-or-death emergency situations‚ but 28-year-old Liam Stych recently jumped into action to save a mom and child from a sinking car. Storm Henk's heavy rains and strong winds struck large areas of England and Wales at the start of 2024‚ damaging property‚ causing power outages‚ and disrupting traffic. When flood waters carried a car under a bridge in Hall Green‚ Birmingham‚ the roadworks engineer and traffic manager happened to be taking a stroll with his pregnant partner‚ Tia Draper. She was shouting‚ ‘Help me‚ help me‚ please save my baby; she’s in the back!'" With water rushing into the car‚ Liam smashed the rear passenger window and used ratchet straps to secure the car to the bridge and keep it from sinking any further. What a frightening moment that must have been for Mom! No doubt‚ it was scary for Liam as well. However‚ he acted without delay-demonstrating care not to put any additional weight onto the car and to quickly consider each move. He grabbed the toddler and "hurled" her into Tia's arms. Tia‚ who was capturing the entire rescue on camera‚ immediately comforted the frightened little girl. Liam is being called a "local hero" by West Midlands Police after rescuing the mother and child from the sinking car. But he is modest‚ saying‚ "I just acted on instinct." Perhaps so‚ but things might have gone much differently if not for Liam's brave actions. While watching her partner navigate such a dangerous situation was probably nerve-racking for Tia‚ she is surely grateful to see that Liam is so calm in a crisis! The Queensland Supreme Court has ruled that COVID-19 jab mandates for some frontline workers‚ including police and ambulance workers‚ were unlawful. Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) workers challenged the mandates in Supreme Court in 2022. “The two groups were testing the legality of the directions on several grounds of the Judicial Review Act (JRA) and the Human Rights Act (HRA)‚” Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reports. QPS and QAS workers were ordered to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or face disciplinary action‚ including termination of employment. The Guardian reports: The court found the police commissioner‚ Katarina Carroll‚ failed to give proper consideration to human rights relevant to the decision to issue the vaccine mandate. The former Department of Health director general Dr John Wakefield was unable to prove he issued the vaccine mandate under an implied term of the employment agreements for ambulance service workers. As a result‚ both vaccine mandates were found by the court to be “unlawful” and to have no effect. The court also found the directions limited the human rights of workers because they were required to undergo a medical procedure without full consent but it was reasonable in all the circumstances. The senior judge administrator‚ Glenn Martin‚ said the police and ambulance services were trying to prevent their employees from suffering infection‚ serious illness and life-changing health consequences. Nobody is ever going to accuse guitarist Ace Frehley of having a golden throat. But the guy can write a catchy rock tune‚ still wail like a master shredder‚ and fuels his tunes with a sure and certain personality. The 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and original KISS member does just this across 11 tight little rock diddies on his 2024 album‚ 10‚000 Volts. The opening one-two heavy riff punch of the album’s title track and “Walkin’ On The Moon“ set the tone of big rock songs with catchy choruses‚ Frehley’s vocals‚ and a solid no-frills backing of drums‚ bass‚ and an occasional harmony vocal. This is pretty much what we get throughout the production here‚ co-handled by Frehley and Trixter guitarist Steve Brown. Lyrically‚ half the tunes feature the guitarist pining for‚ thanking‚ and confessing how things are now because of the influence of a life-changing love. It sets a slight juxtaposition‚ as I am never sure if he has the girl‚ lost the girl‚ or is happy with the girl. Songs like the 80s-flavored ballad “Back Into My Arms Again” tells this kind of tale. We get some good digs at the world at large. On “Blinded‚” Frehley sings about his mistrust of science‚ although he doesn’t seem as blinded as good old Thomas Dolby. And “Up In The Sky‚” he ruminates on what he knows he saw up there and how the truth is being hidden. We do get the silly Space Ace on “Constantly Cute.” The guitar playing here shows off a fleet of fingers‚ while the material is remains fun and accessible. The term “supergroup” has been used many times in the music business. All you really have to do is be recognizable name-wise‚ then collaborate on a project with three or four other musicians who have also had past success‚ and you too can achieve this press-worthy status. Some work‚ some don’t. Sadly‚ egos and issues of the sort usually get in the way of progress and creativity‚ and the band members go their separate ways or pair off. It has happened countless times in rock and roll. For the members of The Immediate Family‚ who have released a second album entitled Skin In The Game‚ the aforementioned status applies‚ but it is secondary thought. They let the music speak for itself. The players — veteran guitarists Danny Kortchmar and Waddy Wachtel‚ bassist Leland Sklar‚ and drummer Russ Kunkel joined by singer and guitarist Steve Postell — have collaborated together to create some great material for today’s rock lovers. The record starts out with the aptly titled “Whole Lotta Rock and Roll‚” a crashing‚ bashing bar-room rocker that spotlights Wachtel’s blistering guitar runs and scratchy vocals. Sklar and his solid bass lines and Kortchmar’s lead vocals bring the funky blues of “24/7/365” to a head-shaking groove. Postell takes the lead vocal for a reworking of Russell and Ron Mael’s “The Toughest Girl In Town‚” the album’s first single‚ which is a huge left turn from the 1988 original version by Sparks. Imagine if an artist like Nils Lofgren took on a Devo song. If so‚ you get the picture. It’s odd but it works‚ and I applaud the band for making it their own. Skin In The Game alternates between satirical romps like “Party At The Graveyard” to lovely melodies such as “Catch You On The Other Side.” The latter brings to mind Jackson Brown’s 1982 hit‚ “Somebody’s Baby‚” which was co-written by Kortchmar and features him and Kunkel on the recording. It’s a very diverse set of songs‚ and the fact that it is split up vocally among the trio of Kortchmar‚ Wachtel‚ and Postell is a testament to how much trust the players have in each other as a unit. Everyone brings something to the table. “Lost In The Shuffle” is just that — a rocking shuffle led by the fantastic rhythm section of Sklar and Kunkel that makes it a play on words with the beat of the song. The fact that these gentlemen play on so many recordings I own makes just about everything on Skin In The Game sounds homey and familiar. My two favorite songs on the record — Kortchmar’s “Too Many Irons In The Fire” and Wachtel’s hilarious “High Maintenance Girlfriend‚” which closes the album — take popular terms and ingeniously craft them into the music. This is what great songwriters do.
