The CIA’s Most Dangerous Weapon: Books

Forget James Bond. George Minden was the real thing. A Romanian aristocrat by birth, he could have spent his days in manor houses, sipping brandy and debating politics. Instead, he entered the world of espionage. A CIA operative, with a mind like a dagger, he moved without drawing attention, deliberate and invisible. In 1983, while the world braced for nuclear war, Minden was planning something truly subversive. He would flood communist Poland with forbidden literature. Not leaflets. Not propaganda. Real stories. The kind that rattled regimes. The kind that made people think. Charlie English’s The CIA Book Club tells this forgotten story. America’s spymasters discovered that smuggling Cosmopolitan behind the Iron Curtain worked better than missiles. Books became bullets in freedom’s arsenal. The genius was simple. Communist regimes treated information like contraband, hoarding and rationing it like medieval kings guarded gold. Every Polish typewriter was registered. Paper required permits. Even a book on baking could be flagged as subversive. Into this desert, Minden poured literature. Not just Orwell’s obvious warnings, but everything the regime feared: le Carré thrillers, art catalogs, philosophy, even glossy Western magazines. His philosophy was elegant and devastating: All books “accomplish the political task of making the ideological isolation of Eastern Europe difficult.” Why preach freedom when you could let people discover it for themselves? The mechanics read like slapstick stitched to sabotage. Polish physicist Miroslaw Chojecki became literature’s top bootlegger. He built “flying libraries,” backpacks stuffed with banned books, passed hand to hand across the country. Printing presses hid behind false walls. Publishers operated like speakeasies — silent, scattered, and relentless. Chojecki survived 44 arrests and never broke. French smuggler Jacky Challot brought the desperation. Caught at the border with incriminating papers, he tried flushing them down a filthy toilet. They wouldn’t go. So he fished them out — and ate them, naturally. Charlie English captures these moments perfectly. Helena Luczywo ran underground publishing while dodging the secret police. These weren’t CIA stooges. They were true believers, zealots who knew, deep down, that ideas could bring regimes to their knees. The agency provided funding and equipment. Polish dissidents provided courage and creativity. The partnership worked because it trusted local knowledge over American assumptions. Not everyone appreciated the subtlety. CIA operations officers mocked the book program. Real spies fought dirty wars, they sneered. Vladimir Mayakovsky’s poetry seemed pathetic next to Afghan mujahideen with missiles. They missed the point. Books cost pennies compared to conventional warfare. Yet they achieved something profound. They made oppression visible to the oppressed. People “devoured” forbidden books “in a night” before sharing them. Each smuggled copy reached dozens of readers. The revolution began in minds before erupting in streets. English argues convincingly that Poland’s awakening catalyzed Communism’s collapse. The Berlin Wall fell because people learned to imagine alternatives. Literature lit the fuse. Although the book sometimes gets bogged down in bureaucratic detail, and some chapters drag when they should move quickly, these are minor flaws in an otherwise gripping story. The timing feels almost cruel. At a moment when fewer and fewer Americans read, and the CIA is a pale shadow of what it once was, English’s account lands like a quiet indictment. The agency — though never without flaws — once directed its efforts toward real threats: authoritarian regimes, censorship, and the war for hearts and minds. In recent times, however, it has channeled most of its energy into chasing optics, managing narratives, and treating public opinion as the enemy. Minden’s generation trusted the power of books. Ours trusts the algorithm. And it shows. The contrast cuts deep. Communist Poland regarded books as dangerous contraband, threats to state control that needed to be tracked, censored, and suppressed. Contemporary America views literature as harmless decoration or, worse, as a waste of time, effort, and money. Which society understood the true power of reading? The one that feared it. In Poland, novels could spark rebellion. In America, they gather dust — or, in the digital age, get downloaded and never opened. Clicked once, forgotten forever. Behind the Iron Curtain, books were hunted. Here, they’re background noise. Minden and his allies risked their lives to smuggle truth into closed societies. Today, truth is freely available — and mostly ignored. That’s the tragedy. The fight for access has been won, only for apathy to take hold. Minden understood something we’ve since forgotten. People don’t need spin. They need substance. Give them books, and they’ll do the rest. Trust their intelligence, and they’ll grow into freedom. His smuggling ring worked because it didn’t preach — it invited. No lectures. No slogans. Just raw exposure to the world’s best thinking. The system didn’t fall because someone shouted it down. It fell because people began to imagine something else. “Truth is contagious,” Minden said. He wasn’t wrong. The infection spread through samizdat networks until entire populations developed immunity to control. This wasn’t just about books — it was about belief. The CIA’s book club worked because it treated readers as capable, not gullible. It didn’t push a message. It opened a door. We live in very different times. “Subversive” now describes slam poetry in a student union. But the lesson still holds. Stories move minds more than sermons. Literature frees not by dictating, but by expanding the map of probabilities and possibilities. The bookleggers got it. Tyranny falls when people see alternatives. Give people room to read, to think, to imagine, and the rest will follow. A Global Scientific Scandal Is Brewing: What If Scientific Research Is No Longer Trustworthy?

Every day, the press churns out shocking scientific news that contradicts what we’ve always believed, our trusted doctors, or plain common sense. One of my hobbies is tracking down the sources. Here’s what I’ve learned: The more outrageous the research findings, the smaller and more obscure the university. The dumber the methodology, the harder it is to verify if the researchers even exist. The more groundbreaking the result, the more likely its interpretation is bogus. The more clicks a story gets, the less fact-checking the journalist did. And the more institutions and media outlets amplify and rework the story, the more dangerous the headline becomes. The “Problematic Paper Screener” database has already flagged over two million recent scientific articles as potentially fake. A few days ago, the Spanish magazine I run, Popes80.com, published an investigation titled “Global Scientific Scandal: Millions of Fraudulent Articles Threaten Human Lives and Contaminate Research.” On one hand, you have authors signing off on research they didn’t conduct (for a fee). On the other hand, prestigious scientific journals publish articles they don’t even read (for a fee). Then there are studies that were never actually conducted and ones that lack credibility, sold at a premium to students and professionals desperate to rack up publications for career advancement. By the way: Are governments and universities creating this mess by demanding researchers churn out more and more papers to outscore their competitors? Yes. Another example of how governments ruin everything they touch, even the noble pursuit of science. The Popes80 journalists showed how easy it is to whip up a fake scientific paper that looks legit in seconds. They created one titled “The Description of Algebraic Classes.” All they had to do was pick the authors’ names. They went with “Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, and Vinícius Júnior,” a nod to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. The auto-generated article included complex formulas, graphs, and near-incomprehensible jargon. Problem is, it’s just a random mashup of phrases common in these papers — grammatically nonsensical and meaningless.  The creators meant it as a joke. But then they submitted some of these papers to scientific journals. Surprise: Several got accepted, some even praised as “truly interesting and novel research.” Options: The editor was plastered. Nobody read it. A flying cat landed on the editor’s keyboard and accidentally sent an acceptance email. Coincidentally, the acceptance email often comes with a $500–$600 “processing fee,” as if they’re weaving the text in gold thread on an intern’s liver.   The real danger isn’t these prank fake papers but the unverified studies drawing false conclusions on critical topics like cancer, chemical weapons, or psychiatric disorders. When some obscure journal — whether in the U.S., India, Russia, or Iran — publishes them, they often morph into global headlines, hyping nonexistent cancer cures or, as often happens with fake research from China, promoting the grimy and dangerous Traditional Chinese Medicine pushed by the CCP. Post-COVID reminder: Never trust anything scientific coming out of China, where a regime that despises humanity tried to pin a global pandemic on a pangolin. This flood of fake science creates false hope for patients and can even endanger lives. Even if a paper is eventually retracted after private complaints — as a small but growing number are — it circulates in the media for two or three years, cited by other researchers and used as the basis for further studies. That’s as healthy for science as trying to perform prostate surgery at home following steps from ChatGPTs. Retractions are a pipe dream anyway. Retraction Watch logged 10,000 retracted articles worldwide in 2023, but experts estimate only 1 percent of fraudulent research ever gets pulled. Maybe we could demand universities tighten their filters to stop churning out junk science, but that would leave them less time to protest against Israel. We could ask journals to prioritize quality, but they’re too busy cashing checks from as many authors as possible. Everyone knows nobody reads those damn journals anyway, except when they publish something about natural penis enlargement remedies. We could also ask funding institutions to be more rigorous with their grants, but that’s like asking USAID to stop wasting money on nonsense or begging the Soros clan to quit funding multiculturalism and abortions. And we could ask governments to rethink the system that rewards job candidates for piling up publications, but that’s like asking the Italian mafia to start paying taxes on hit jobs. I’m never particularly optimistic, but on this, I’m even less so. In the age of AI-driven mass production, scientific research will suffocate under fake science. Well, screw it — they’re always trying to take away our processed snacks, tobacco, and beer anyway. SCOTUS Paves the Way for Trump to Act on Campaign Agenda

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that President Donald Trump may proceed with firing thousands of federal employees, helping him achieve a major campaign agenda item.  On Tuesday, the court issued an order lifting a preliminary injunction that had blocked President Trump’s executive order demanding widespread reductions across federal agencies. The court said the administration was likely to succeed in defending its authority to do so.  Susan Illston, a federal judge for the Northern District of California, blocked the ordered cuts, ruling that they would most likely violate the law. The administration submitted an emergency appeal in response, and were granted the ability to move forward.  The executive order came in February, and was backed by the Department of Government Efficiency, then headed by Elon Musk. During the first Cabinet meeting of his second term, Trump stated the need for government reductions, one of his major campaign promises.  He said, “We’re cutting down the size of government. We have to,” and that, “We’re bloated. We’re sloppy. We have a lot of people that aren’t doing their job.” The executive order calls for reductions at dozens of agencies, including Agriculture, State, Treasury, Veterans Affairs, and others.  White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated, “Today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling is another definitive victory for the President and his administration.”  He added that the victory represents a defense against “continued assaults on the President’s constitutionally authorized executive powers by leftist judges who are trying to prevent the President from achieving government efficiency.” Solicitor General John Sauer also praised the court’s decision as “a necessary step toward budgetary discipline.” His statement highlights the administration’s goal of eliminating excessive personnel and streamlining government operations. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson offered a lone dissent of the opinion, stating that the move by the court “demonstrated enthusiasm for greenlighting this President’s legally dubious actions in an emergency posture.” The court clarified that no specific reductions had been brought to the justices, only the executive order for agencies to cut workers.  During Trump’s second campaign, he focused on the need to reduce the size and scope of the deep state. He has supported the reinstatement of Schedule F, which would reclassify tens of thousands of federal jobs as political appointments, allowing the administration to fire the individuals. Roughly 20 agencies are set to lay off workers, and the Department of Health and Human Services already released 10,000 workers in April. These cuts are a result of Trump’s longtime wishes to “drain the swamp” by reducing government agency staff. In total, the federal government employs roughly 3 million individuals.  READ MORE from Andrew Gondy: How Trump’s ‘Peace Through Strength’ Policy Is Securing Peace Around the World DOJ, FBI Close the Book on Jeffrey Epstein, Claiming No Client List Exists

The Real Reason Elon’s America Party Will Fail

When Americans are approached by pollsters and asked whether they worry about our nation’s astronomical debt, the answer is usually “yes.” In fact, the issue is so pressing that it ranks among Americans’ top political issues, right up there with war, crime, and the rising cost of groceries. But if politicians believed that what Americans tell pollsters is what they actually think, they’d be unsuccessful politicians. It makes fiscal conservatives a bit angry, but that’s what President Donald Trump and the Republicans in the House and Senate recognized when they designed the Big Beautiful Bill, which is complete with tax cuts, increased spending, and (according to some estimates) trillions of dollars added to the national debt. If the debt really were so worrisome to Americans, you’d think that the Big Beautiful Bill would be political kryptonite. It’s not because it comes with tax cuts. The whole situation, of course, bothers Elon Musk — a businessman who knows that, in business, systemic debt caused by bad business practices usually leads to bankruptcy. He apparently believed Republicans when they promised they’d lower the national debt (something most of us have been cured of), and when the Big Beautiful Bill made it very obvious that they had no intention of reducing spending, he and President Trump had the break-up of a lifetime. (READ MORE: Is Elon Musk Ross Perot Reincarnated?) Then, just after Independence Day, while the rest of us were still sleeping off the fireworks and the Republicans were congratulating themselves on getting their massive bill signed into law, Musk announced that he would be founding the America Party. For now, he seems to be serious. It’s tempting to brush off the America Party as yet another third-party flop just waiting to happen; after all, American history has not been particularly kind to political players who aren’t satisfied with the two-party system we’re stuck with. That’s not to say Musk doesn’t have some factors going for him. Third parties typically struggle with a lack of media attention and a lack of funds, Musk’s signature flair and his personal funding likely won’t let either of those things happen (at least not before the upcoming midterms). Furthermore, Musk isn’t quite deluded enough to think that he can compete with the Democratic or Republican Parties on a national scale. If his X posts are anything to go by, he’s planning on using the America Party like a political sniper against shaky districts. Even just a few America Party candidates in Congress could exploit razor thin margins to block pieces of legislation they don’t like. For those of us classicists, that would be a political strategy modeled on Epaminondas’s battle tactics at Leuctra. (READ MORE: The ‘BBB’: Conservatism but With Caveats) Of course, as any political commentator would remind you, Musk’s challenge will be getting a single candidate to win a district — it happens, but not frequently. That said, it’s somewhat disingenuous to make the argument that, just because third parties usually fail, Musk’s failure is a foregone conclusion. It’s possible — even if it’s not probable — that the America Party could surprise us. Stranger things have happened in American politics. Except Musk’s party has a major flaw: One of its central tenets is to stop the uniparty from “bankrupting our country with waste & graft.” The trouble isn’t so much that most Americans don’t believe the premise, but rather that they don’t like the steps needed to balance the government’s budget, much less begin tackling national debt. When it comes down to the ballot box though, Americans are still interested in being promised that their rent will be less expensive, taxes will go down, and they’ll be able to afford groceries. Unless the America Party can pivot and make that argument more effectively than Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani, it’s doomed to failure. READ MORE from Aubrey Harris: Pixar Did the Right Thing. It Appears That The Democrats Are Planning To Use The Cover Up Of The Epstein Files To Destroy Donald Trump

After four years of saying nothing about them during the Biden Administration, all of a sudden Democrats in Congress are extremely interested in the Epstein files.  They smell blood, because they know that the cover up of the Epstein files has greatly outraged a very large portion of the population.  So they are going to make all sorts of wild allegations about what is in those files, because they know that there is no way that the Trump administration can reverse course and release them now.  During the midterm elections, Republicans in competitive races all over the country will be hurt by this, and if Democrats are able to take back control of Congress they will inevitably try to use the cover up of the Epstein files to impeach Donald Trump.  The Democratic Party was on the ropes, but the unprecedented debacle that we just witnessed has given them new life. I think that Trump will deeply regret not releasing the Epstein files to the public. By keeping them secret, speculation that they personally implicate him is going to run rampant. Americans have wild imaginations, and when Elon Musk claimed that Trump “is in the Epstein files” last month, that instantly sparked a whirlwind of controversy… But the fight has since taken a far more personal turn, bolstered by Musk’s allegation that Trump is listed in the files related to the late financier and alleged sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. “That is the real reason they have not been made public,” Musk said in a post shared via his social media platform, X, on Thursday. He did not provide evidence pertaining to this. In the aftermath of Musk’s allegation, a couple of Democrats in Congress fired off a letter to Pam Bondi and Kash Patel… The accusation has spurred Democrats to chase the full unsealing of the Epstein files. California Rep. Robert Garcia and Massachusetts Rep. Stephen F. Lynch—Democratic members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform—sent a letter on June 5 to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Kash Patel. “We write with profound alarm at allegations that files relating to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have not been declassified and released to the American public because they personally implicate President Trump,” read the letter, accompanied by a press release titled “Is Trump Suppressing The Epstein Files?” Trump could have put an end to the matter by simply releasing the Epstein files. But he didn’t do that. So now he has created a firestorm. Now that we are being told that the Epstein files will never be released, 16 Democrats in Congress have sent a letter to Pam Bondi “accusing her of withholding some Epstein files to protect the president from any damaging disclosures”… House Democrats on Tuesday demanded that the justice department release documents related to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking case that mentions or references Donald Trump, citing a comment by Elon Musk after he fell out with the president this year. The House judiciary committee’s ranking member, Jamie Raskin, together with 15 other Democrats sent a six-page letter to the US attorney general, Pam Bondi, accusing her of withholding some Epstein files to protect the president from any damaging disclosures. We don’t know if there is anything in those files about Trump or not. But that is the point. The Democrats are just going to keep suggesting that Trump is hiding something over and over again, and lots of voters will believe them. In the letter, the Democrats ask Bondi to “publicly release all documents in the Epstein files that mention or reference Donald Trump”… “Stop protecting your boss and former client, release the Smith report in full without redactions immediately, and publicly release all documents in the Epstein files that mention or reference Donald Trump,” the letter said. The Democrats know that they aren’t going to get that. But that isn’t why they wrote the letter. They wrote the letter to get the media talking about this. Lots of people are going to start wondering what the Epstein files say about Trump even though they may say absolutely nothing about him at all. I just wish that we could get the truth, but that isn’t going to happen now. And there is also going to be a lot of debate about who else Trump may be protecting by not releasing the files. After accusing Trump of being “in the Epstein files” last month, Elon Musk is now accusing Trump ally Steven Bannon of being “in the Epstein files” too… While Trump was speaking at the Tuesday meeting, Musk ranted to Roger Stone, one of the president’s advisers, about accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. “Why would Jeffrey Epstein associate Steve Bannon try to help Robert Mueller send me to prison by perjuring himself at my trial?” Stone asked on X. “Bannon is in the Epstein files,” Musk replied, while offering no evidence to back up the accusation. Elon Musk should not be doing this unless he has direct knowledge that this is true. Did Musk get to look into the Epstein files while he was working with DOGE? If so, he needs to tell us. Of course Musk has now started his own political party, and he is pledging that his party will make releasing the Epstein files a top priority… Tech billionaire Elon Musk once again slammed President Trump over the Jeffrey Epstein case, confirming that his new political party, which he has dubbed the “America Party,” will make it a priority to expose the files. Musk first questioned how people can be expected to have faith in the president if he doesn’t release the files regarding the convicted sex offender and financier. “How can people be expected to have faith in Trump if he won’t release the Epstein files?” he asked in a post on X, the social platform he owns. I am sure that some Democrats will start promising to release the Epstein files too, even though they just had four years to do that under Joe Biden. In the end, I don’t think that they will ever see the light of day. Whatever has caused President Trump to put a lid on those files must be something really big. Journalist Nick Bryant is suggesting that the reason the Epstein files are being covered up is because Jeffrey Epstein was involved in a massive blackmail operation… Journalist Nick Bryant notes in this viral clip from the Shawn Ryan podcast that the Jeffrey Epstein case is being covered up by the federal government and will never progress because it would destroy their entire operational system. “Epstein had cameras in all of his homes. Epstein was definitely a blackmail artist,” Bryant notes. “The government wants to make sure that that does not come out. A huge part of our political system is predicated on blackmail,” he adds. “If that dark, malignant corner of the intelligence that is using blackmail against our politicians and other people, if they were using children, that would make the American people erupt,” Bryant further urges. Maybe Bryant is on to something, or maybe he is completely and utterly wrong. So many theories are being thrown around, and we can’t prove or disprove any of them because we are never going to get to see the evidence. It was a colossal mistake of epic proportions not to release the Epstein files. We were waiting patiently for months because we were promised that justice would be coming, but now everyone is speculating about why the Epstein files are being covered up. This is a perfect scenario for the Democrats, because they feel like they finally have something that they can use to get the upper hand on President Trump. President Trump’s Chief Of Staff Susie Wiles Talks About Elon Musk And Praises Biden Staffers In Rare Interview

President Trump’s Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, who usually stays away from the press, did a rare interview with Miranda Devine, who hosts the Pod Force One podcast. In the interview, Wiles gave an inside look at the Trump 2024 presidential campaign, what she thinks of the current administration, her opinions of Elon Musk, and how she has respect for Joe Biden’s staffers. When it came to Musk, Wiles had nothing but good things to say about the CEO of Tesla. Watch her talk about Musk here: White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles opened up to @mirandadevine on the latest episode of “Pod Force One” about President Trump's “very troublesome” falling out with Elon Musk. Subscribe here: https://t.co/mF1jSbzGLE pic.twitter.com/8b0cdbfjEx — New York Post (@nypost) July 9, 2025 Fox News had more to report on what Wiles had to say about Musk: White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles lamented in a new interview that Elon Musk’s relationship with President Donald Trump and the administration came to a “troublesome ending.” “It seemed almost as if he had a sort of fatherly fixation with Donald Trump that I guess inevitably was going to blow up at some point. How did you see that relationship?” New York Post columnist Miranda Devine asked Wiles after they both agreed there was a “hiccup” with the former head of DOGE. “Similar, the president was very, very kind to him. And Elon had so much to offer us. He knew things we didn’t know, he knew people and technologies that we didn’t know. It was a great thing when it was a great thing, and then it had a very troublesome ending,” Wiles said. Musk and Trump have traded barbs over the Trump-backed “Big, Beautiful Bill” as the former DOGE chief has since launched another political party — the “America Party.” The new party, according to Musk’s posts, will target a few key seats in Congress. The goal is to create a swing bloc powerful enough to hold the balance of power and stop what Musk sees as the worst excesses of both Republicans and Democrats. Musk called the bill a “disgusting abomination.” “I don’t understand it. I don’t know,” Wiles told Devine of the pair’s fallout. “I enjoyed working with Elon. I think he’s a fascinating person and sees the world differently. And I think that’s probably what the president saw, too, just a little bit different than the average Joe, but certainly, came to not a good ending.” Later in the interview, Wiles shared that she talks to Biden’s aides occasionally. Here’s a clip: President Trump’s Chief of Staff Susie Wiles Reveals She Calls On Biden Staffers From Time To Time pic.twitter.com/wYNx35jEjv — Anthony Scott (@AnthonysTown) July 10, 2025 The Hill provided more details on her relationship with Biden aides: White House chief of staff Susie Wiles said she calls on former aides to former President Biden on occasion, following what she described as a very positive experience working with them on the presidential transition. In an interview with the New York Post’s Miranda Devine, Wiles praised Biden’s staff when asked about her view on the former presidency. “He was a low energy president and I think that’s actually harder on the staff than what I have. They were pushing, I’m pulling. They could not have been more kind to me as we were transitioning. Really wonderful, wonderful at telling us what to expect, what resources were at our fingertips. They were terrific,” Wiles said. “The presidency, not so much. But the individuals that I worked with and I knew, were spectacular,” she continued. “And I actually call on them from time to time now.” Wiles added, “Not what I expected, but it was welcomed.” Watch the full interview here:
