MAHA’s True Power Lies in Truth, Transparency and Education, Not More Regulation

Some criticize the new MAHA report for going light on specific policy recommendations. That may be the point. Last week, among a frenzied news cycle, the Make America Healthy Again Commission dropped its much-anticipated health recommendations. Unsurprisingly, the mainstream media got busy criticizing the new MAHA report, saying that it “lacked teeth” and disappointed even the most tepid supporters. Yes, very specific policies may have been absent, but I would argue that might be the point. Ultimately, the responsibility for the health of this country depends not on more regulation and policy, but on individual choices made with the most truthful, transparent, and data-driven information the government can offer. While the MAHA community is unified in its mission to drastically lower the rates of chronic disease in the country, it sometimes disagrees on the best ways to get there—as it should. We need good faith, robust debates about potential solutions across government agencies, something the MAHA commission is designed to provide. But first, we must figure out the culprit, the reason for America’s lack of health. Most will agree that the current Food and Drug Administration food guidelines are based on nothing but junk science that was ultimately subsidized by companies that stood to profit from it the most. As Dr. Marty Makary said in the MAHA Commission’s press conference, the food pyramid “may be one of the greatest sources of misinformation in modern American history.” This is something the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the FDA are already addressing. As early as this month, we can expect to see new food guidelines that will affect everything from school lunches to prison meals. But what are the other drivers of obesity or autism or abysmal mental health outcomes? Is it the overloaded childhood vaccination schedule, which recommends almost 30 shots before a child turns two? Is it the standard American diet, or “SAD,” filled with highly processed foods and petroleum-laden food dyes? Or is it exposure to agricultural chemicals? My gut instinct is that all of these play a part in poor health outcomes, but I am reluctant to draw any direct conclusions or recommend policy changes until we have what Kennedy has repeatedly called for—gold standard science and unbiased research free from corporate influence. Without it, policy changes will be willy-nilly, lacking broad base consensus. This is why the second report was heavy on research and evaluation suggestions from agencies like the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Environmental Protection Agency. The administration has already made great strides in reversing bad policy such as the “Generally Recognized as Safe,” or “GRAS,” loophole, which allowed food producers to claim that their chemical additives were safe. That in and of itself is a huge win—after all, it’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, to reverse regulation once it has been introduced. The administration has also encouraged the removal of chemical food dyes, not by enacting any law, but by garnering broad base support through education and appealing to the good sense of consumers and manufacturers alike. Most Americans understood there was no need for these ingredients in food, and many food companies saw the writing on the wall and willingly complied with changes. This is the way forward. End the corporate capture of our agencies and demand transparency, truth, and trust. Update nutritional education and messaging to shift demand. Free entrepreneurs from unnecessary regulation and make it attractive to enter the marketplace. Once demand shifts, the supply side will be forced to accommodate. Marion Nestle, popular food policy critic, decried government agencies’ capitulation to big industry. “Regulate?” she wrote, “Not a chance.” She claimed that anything other than government solutions are “waffle words: explore, coordinate, partner, prioritize, develop, or work toward.” I would argue those words are not waffling. Instead, they’re the way our political system is meant to work. We should be consistently working toward a better way—but that better way must be driven by the American people, not by bureaucrats and congressmen who have consistently betrayed their trust. As much as I want to Make America Healthy Again—and believe me, I want it very much—I am not willing to enact a nanny state to achieve it. Long-lasting, positive reform will never happen by force. It will happen through well-thought out, proper incentives. And it will happen in a free market where consumers are as informed as possible and where those wishing to innovate to meet consumer demand can thrive. It will happen when people decide they want to be healthy, and when they, not the government, demand it. TV Anchor Suspended for On-Air Tribute to Charlie Kirk Resigns

"Many in the mainstream media have been fired or punished for mocking his assassination. I believe I am the first to be targeted for honoring him on air,” Illinois ABC affiliate Anchor Beni Rae Harmony wrote Monday, announcing her resignation over her on-air tribute to slain conservative Charlie Kirk. “Effective immediately, I have resigned from @WICS_ABC20 after being SUSPENDED for airing a non-partisan tribute to Charlie Kirk this past Friday,” Harmony posted to her personal X.com account. In her post, Harmony shared video of her tearful tribute while anchoring WICS’s “Marketplace,” in which she recalls that Kirk was her first boss and “the first person who made me believe in myself.” “It’s okay, if you feel sadness. It’s okay if you’re grieving,” Harmony told her viewers, going on to explain how Kirk always stressed the importance of free speech and open debate. “Speak up for what you believe in – I don’t care what it is,” Harmony said.   Effective immediately, I have resigned from @WICS_ABC20 after being SUSPENDED for airing a non-partisan tribute to Charlie Kirk this past Friday. In a separate post, Harmony says her resignation was “guided by values that are essential to who I am, to which I refuse to set aside, in order to keep a job” and that “I choose my faith, and love of country, and always will.” WICS is not commenting on Harmony’s suspension and resignation, presumably because it is a personnel matter.

WOMP, WOMP: CBS’s Dickerson Forced to Change Tune, Admit to Motive in Kirk Murder

During CBS’s brief reaction Tuesday to Utah County officials announcing charges against the suspect in the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, CBS Evening News co-anchor John Dickerson was forced to listen to then recap for viewers which he had denied hours earlier that Kirk was murdered for his political views. Speaking moments later to correspondent Carter Evans at the press conference, Dickerson reiterated that “[i]n addition to those text messages that were read, we heard about the possible motivation as Robinson’s parents explained he had become more radical, more left leaning.” It was only Monday night in the 7:00 p.m. Eastern half-hour that Dickerson asserted on CBS Evening News Plus that the “motive remains elusive” and the suspect might not have been “driven by an obvious political ideology” with all that we then had was “vague, second-hand testimony.” He then partnered with a supposed extremism expert to argue the murder might have been nihilistic terrorism, meaning the suspect did not have a particular motive other than a general hate for the world. Our Jorge Bonilla wrote this was “fighting the motive narrative battle with the intensity of the last Japanese soldier in the Philippine jungles after the end of World War II.” Even though it was already obvious at the time given the reports about the suspect having become political strained from his family, Dickerson joined the likes of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, ABC’s The View, The Atlantic’s Jemele Hill, CNN’s Juliette Kayyem, and MSNBC host/Atlantic writer Jonathan Lemire to name a few. On the same show, Dickerson decried “conflict entrepreneurs” as having helped foment toxicity in our politics despite, well, his own record (links to those examples referenced here and here): Our Geoff Dickens also took a look in January at what were then some of Dickerson’s recent humdingers, proving his Scott Pelley and Brian Williams-esque pomposity has done plenty to drive people apart.

Utah County attorney formally charges Charlie Kirk's suspected assassin

The Utah County attorney on Tuesday brought formal charges against the suspected assassin of Charlie Kirk.Calling Kirk's assassination an "American tragedy," Jeff Gray said during a news conference that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice, and other crimes.'Charlie Kirk was murdered while engaging in one our most sacred and cherished American rights, the bedrock of our democratic republic: the free exchange of ideas in a search for truth, understanding, and a more perfect union.'Gray previously noted that aggravated murder under Utah law carries a penalty of either death, life in prison without the possibility of parole, or 25 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Gray on Tuesday said he intends to bring the death penalty against Robinson. As for the aggravated murder charge, Gray added Tuesday that the suspect "intentionally or knowingly" caused Kirk's death "under circumstances that created a great risk of death to others."Officials previously said felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury carries a penalty of five years to life in prison.Gray on Tuesday said the state is alleging in regard to the latter two charges "aggravating factors" because it's believed that Robinson "targeted" Kirk because of the TPUSA founder's "political expression" and knew that children were present at the scene and would "witness the homicide."Other charges include:One count of obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony, for "moving and concealing the rifle used in the shooting."One count of obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony, for "disposing [of] the clothing he wore during the shooting."One count of witness tampering, a third-degree felony, for directing his roommate to "delete his incriminating texts."One count of witness tampering, a third-degree felony, for directing his roommate to "stay silent if police questioned him."One count of commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child, a Class A misdemeanor, for "committing homicide knowing that children were present and may have seen or heard the murder and did so" based on Kirk's "political expression.""Charlie Kirk was murdered while engaging in one our most sacred and cherished American rights, the bedrock of our democratic republic: the free exchange of ideas in a search for truth, understanding, and a more perfect union," Gray also said Tuesday.Robinson, of Washington, Utah, was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail without bail early Friday morning on suspicion of committing the listed crimes in connection with Kirk's murder Wednesday at Utah Valley University in Orem, officials said. The TPUSA founder was killed by a single shot to his neck while presiding over one of his wildly popular speaking events directed toward college students.RELATED: 'Did they know?' (Photo by Trent Nelson/The Salt Lake Tribune/Getty Images)Now that charges have been formally filed, officials said Robinson will make his first appearance in court — a felony first appearance — at 3 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET) Tuesday.Blaze News on Monday noted that FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the agency found and processed DNA evidence from a towel wrapped around a firearm found discarded in a wooded area near the UVU campus, as well as on a screwdriver found on the rooftop where the shooter was believed to have been. Both DNA samples were a positive match to Robinson, according to Patel. As Blaze News also noted, several reports have confirmed that Robinson lived with a transgender-identifying roommate. The pair resided in an apartment in Saint George, Utah, and had a "romantic relationship," Fox News Digital first reported. The roommate is a biological male who claims he is transitioning to a female. The FBI stated that he has been "extremely cooperative" with the agency's investigation and allegedly "had no idea" Robinson had allegedly planned the fatal shooting and has not been accused of any criminal activity in connection with Kirk's assassination. In addition, Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) confirmed that Robinson's roommate identified as transgender, indicating that this information may assist investigators in determining a motive for Kirk's assassination, although he noted that Robinson's motive remains unclear.Like Blaze News? Video shows bizarre reaction from supporters of Luigi Mangione after judge's decision on terrorism charges

While the rest of America is struggling to deal with the consequences of political violence, supporters of the alleged murderer of a health care CEO are gleefully dancing in celebration of political violence.Luigi Mangione is facing numerous charges related to the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City on Dec. 4. Security video captured footage of a gunman walking up to Thompson and coldly executing him before walking away.'Here, the crime — the heinous, but targeted and discrete killing of one person — is very different from the examples of terrorism set forth in the statute.'On Tuesday, a New York judge found that there was not enough evidence to support two terrorism charges against Mangione and dropped them from his case. The 26-year-old will still face the rest of the charges, which include second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. "There was no evidence presented of a desire to terrorize the public, inspire widespread fear, engage in a broader campaign of violence, or to conspire with organized terrorist groups," wrote Judge Gregory Carro. "Here, the crime — the heinous, but targeted and discrete killing of one person — is very different from the examples of terrorism set forth in the statute."Outside of the Manhattan Criminal Court, when the news hit Mangione's supporters, some danced in celebration and hugged each other."Murder for profit is terrorism," read a protest sign from one of the supporters. The crowd also chanted "Free Luigi!"Video of the supporters' reaction was widely circulated on social media. "I'm married to Luigi's AI, I'm not kidding," she said. Mangione has become a popular cause among young leftists who see him as a warrior against corporate greed and the capitalist system. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Thompson was 50 years old when he was killed. He is survived by his wife and two children. Mangione is due back in court on Dec. 1. Like Blaze News? FBI investigating 'a lot more' than 20 people in Discord chat related to Kirk assassination

FBI Director Kash Patel revealed the real extent of the bureau's investigation into Charlie Kirk's assassination.Patel testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that the FBI was looking into "a lot more" than 20 people who were involved in a Discord chat with Kirk's alleged assassin, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. This development is the latest of mounting evidence against Robinson that has been made public. 'We're running them all down.'"We're also going to be investigating anyone and everyone involved in that Discord chat," Patel said during the hearing.Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri pointed to public reports that said there were as many as 20 additional users in the Discord chat shared with Robinson. Patel confirmed that there were in fact "a lot more" who are being investigated. RELATED: FBI unveils damning new evidence against accused Charlie Kirk assassin Photo by PATRICK T. FALLON/AFP via Getty Image"It's a lot more than that," Patel said. "We're running them all down.”Within just days, the FBI came out with evidence to suggest the probable political and ideological motive behind the assassination. Over the weekend, Robinson was confirmed to be living with his trans-identifying boyfriend, a biological man claiming to be a woman. Republican Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah also revealed the ideological messages inscribed onto ammunition found at the crime scene, including one bullet casing that read, "Hey fascist! Catch!" Patel also confirmed Monday that DNA evidence was found on both a screwdriver located on the roof where the shooter is believed to have been and on a firearm recovered in the woods near the shooting. Both samples were a positive match to Robinson's DNA, according to Patel. He is facing charges of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm.
