The Name of the First Cornish Rex Was Kallibunker The first Cornish Rex wasn’t bred intentionally. The first Cornish Rex was a male kitten named Kallibunker‚ and he was the first known and documented cat with a curly coat. He was born in 1950 in Cornwall‚ England. His mother was a regular barn cat and his father was unknown. His mother gave birth to a litter of four kittens. Kallibunker was the only kitten in the litter with curly hair. Unfortunately‚ Kallibunker lived a relatively short life and lived only until he was 6 years old. Before he died‚ Kallibunker helped to produce litters of kittens with curly coats‚ which all contributed to developing the Cornish Rex breed into what it is today. 2. Their Curly Hair Is a Natural Genetic Mutation Cornish Rexes get their coats from a genetic mutation through autosomal recessive inheritance. The curly coat is caused by a recessive allele so a cat must inherit two recessive alleles (one from each parent) for them to have a curly coat. However‚ if they inherit only one of the recessive alleles‚ they will be a carrier for the curly coat‚ but will not have a curly coat.  Carriers can still produce a litter of cats with curly coats if they are mated with another cat that either has a curly coat i.e. has inherited two copies of the curly coat allele‚ or a cat that is a carrier of the gene. Cornish Rexes Are the Oldest of the Rex Cat Breeds The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) acknowledges three types of Rex cats: Cornish Rex‚ Devon Rex‚ and Selkirk Rex. The Rex cats share some similar features‚ such as having unique coats and playful personalities. However‚ they’re recognized as three distinct breeds. The Cornish Rex was first discovered in 1950. The Devon Rex arrived next in 1960 when a curly-coated cat was born in a litter of cats in Devon‚ England. As students across the United States struggle to master basic reading and math skills coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic‚ some schools are dedicating the first week of February to “Black Lives Matter at School” in a “Week of Action.” Tina Descovich‚ co-founder of Moms for Liberty‚ urges parents to see whether their school district is engaging in that program and to speak out against it if it is. “I think most Americans are starting to tune in and understand that we are in a crisis in America in public education‚” Descovich tells “The Daily Signal Podcast.” “We have the lowest test scores since the 1980s in reading and the lowest-ever math scores‚” she notes. “Yet we have organizations like Black Lives Matter in Schools that are setting aside a whole‚ entire week‚ the first week of February—[the] 5th through the 9th—to drive their ideology.” “If you look at their 13 guiding principles and their four demands‚ one of them is to upset the nuclear family‚ to break down the nuclear family‚” the Moms for Liberty co-founder notes. “They have other things like affirming transgenderism and focusing on globalism. Many things that I don’t agree with and don’t want my children learning‚ things that are divisive and will work to destroy our culture and our country.” Black Lives Matter at School’s 13 guiding principles include “Restorative Justice‚” “Globalism‚” “Queer Affirming‚” and “Transgender Affirming.” The 11th principle‚ “Black Villages‚” states: “We disrupt the narrow Western prescribed nuclear family structure expectation. We support each other as extended families and villages that collectively care for one another‚ especially ‘our’ children.” Descovich says schools push this divisive material as “a cover-up for public education failure‚” citing poor proficiency levels in math and reading. For example‚ she notes that only 5% of black fourth grade students in Milwaukee Public Schools—which celebrates the Black Lives Matter in School’s Week of Action—could read at grade level‚ according to the National Advancement of Educational Progress. “Milwaukee Public Schools right now‚ they’ve put out information for their teachers on how to teach some of the 13 guiding principles that Black Lives Matter in Schools are promoting‚ and yet look at what’s going on in Milwaukee Public Schools‚” Descovich says. “Tyler‚ 5% of black students in Milwaukee Public Schools are reading on grade level in the fourth grade. That means 95% of the black children in Milwaukee cannot read. That is sentencing them to a life of real struggle.” “They’re not teaching kids to read or do math‚ and they’re spending time on things that cause division and break down the things that we do know work in society‚ like the nuclear family‚” she adds. Descovich urges parents not to be complacent. She recounts that‚ even though she served on the school board in a conservative county‚ the divisive racial ideas behind Black Lives Matter at School made their way into her county’s school system. She urges parents to “go to your school or your school district’s website and just look.” “Are they celebrating Black Lives Matter in School Week of Action? If they are loud and proud‚ it will be out there‚ front and center‚” Descovich explains. If parents see it on the website‚ they should contact a teacher‚ contact the principal or go to the school board. “If your district is hiding it‚ which is very possible‚ you can do a public records request‚” she notes. Moms for Liberty has resources to help parents file those requests. Such a request may turn up race-based trainings‚ which parents should raise with the school board. Descovich also encourages parents to check if there is a Moms for Liberty chapter in their county‚ and if there isn’t‚ to start one themselves. She also takes the time to “set the record straight” on the Moms for Liberty chapter in Williamson County‚ Tennessee. That Moms for Liberty chapter criticized the “Wit and Wisdom” curriculum‚ which‚ among other things‚ assigned the autobiographical book “Ruby Bridges Goes to School: My True Story.” She recalls that a second grade biracial child in that county told his mom “something about hating his white part” when he returned from school one day. “Our chapter took the time; they spent a thousand hours‚” she says. “They picked every book that has that set in the curriculum‚ every lesson plan. They even got a hold of the teachers manual‚ and they read every sentence‚ and they mapped it out‚ and you really had to do that to see the problem.” “There were little things dropped in kindergarten‚ added on into first grade‚ and then in second grade. They actually had a nine-week social justice segment in their English language arts curriculum‚” Descovich explains. The biracial boy had been in the middle of that program. “You know‚ the curriculum included the book ‘Ruby Bridges Goes to School‚’ and there’s absolutely nothing wrong in that book‚” the Moms for Liberty co-founder says. “But there was a teachers manual that went along with that‚ that spent time with those second graders pointing out the ‘N-word’ and how it was in the background of one of the pictures in the book.” “The teachers manual … didn’t direct the teacher to teach it in a way that showed Ruby Bridges as a hero‚ as brave‚ as what she did is amazing and she had courage. It taught it in a way that was divisive‚” Descovich explains. “I have children. If anyone would have taught them the ‘N-word’ in second grade‚ I would have been irate‚” she says. “And if I had a biracial child sitting in that classroom‚ learning that Ruby Bridges was more of a victim than a hero‚ that’s very upsetting to me.” Listen to the interview with Descovich below. Javier Milei is the president of one country‚ Argentina‚ which makes him accountable to the world’s 46 million Argentines. But the global Left knows that if Milei’s free-market reforms succeed‚ its ascendancy might be cut short. That’s why so many leftists supported or even helped plan last week’s massive demonstrations against Argentina’s new elected leader. A one-day strike by Argentina’s main labor unions‚ accompanied by the biggest street demonstration the South American country has ever seen‚ was partly the result of a global effort. The trade unions‚ other organizations‚ individuals‚ and Marxist global networks involved spanned the world. They used social media platforms—including Facebook‚ X‚ Instagram‚ and Zoom—to promote or plan the marches. We have seen a similar blueprint employed in the past—in Chile in 2019‚ in the U.S. in 2020‚ and in Colombia in 2021. An event or tragedy is seized by revolutionary forces that want to upend society; they and global leftist networks use social media to generate uproar and street demonstrations; political change follows. In Chile‚ it was a hike in subway prices. In the U.S.‚ it was George Floyd’s death. And in Colombia‚ it was higher taxes. Global Left on Fire In Argentina‚ leftists last week protested against Milei’s deregulatory and privatization moves to peel back destructive statist policies that have driven the economy into a constant state of crisis. On Dec. 20‚ soon after being sworn in as president‚ Milei issued a decree limiting the reach of the powerful labor unions. He also sent Argentina’s Congress “omnibus legislation” to provide a much-needed jolt to the nation’s plummeting  economy‚ deregulating various sectors and partially privatizing state behemoths. That was enough to set the global Left on fire. Next-door Brazil—whose shadow over Latin America’s far-Left forces looms large—led the way with the most organizations and individuals involved in helping Argentine trade unions and leftist social movements organize against Milei’s plan. Brazil is a demographic and geographical giant ruled by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva‚ perhaps the hemisphere’s best known Marxist leader. Lula is also the founder of the Foro de Sao Paulo‚ the world’s largest grouping of Marxist parties and organizations. The Foro threw its support behind the march in Argentina. Its executive secretary‚ Monica Valente‚ not only promoted the Jan. 24 protest and other demonstrations since Milei took office. She also shared on social media a Zoom meeting that over 200 global leftist unionists held with leaders of the main Argentine unions on Jan. 18‚ six days before the protest. The nearly two-hour session was led by Rafael Freire‚ a Brazilian who is secretary general of the gigantic Montevideo‚ Uruguay-based Confederación Sindical de los/las Trabajadores/as de las Américas‚ or the Labor Confederation of Workers from the Americas. Freire and other militants from Spain‚ France‚ Italy‚ Brazil‚ Venezuela‚ Africa‚ Australia‚ Belgium‚ Peru‚ and many other countries took turns to speak. The union leaders strategized on plans to hold solidarity protests in front of Argentine embassies all over the world on the same day as the marches in Argentina. They also discussed writing Labor Confederation-led letters to Milei‚ the Argentine Congress‚ and the Argentine Supreme Court demanding an end to the new president’s policies. Unmistakable Call to Arms Freire insisted that he and other international participants on the Zoom call were taking their cues from the three main Argentine union bosses leading the protest efforts. But the figurative call to arms was unmistakable. Freire and the others spoke in apocalyptic tones about what would happen to the rest of the world if Milei succeeded‚ so the Argentines had better stop him lest Mileism spring up everywhere.  “We are facing ultra-right governments‚ a neo-liberal fundamentalism that started with [Donald] Trump in the United States‚” Freire said as the session got under way. “If this kind of politics succeeds in Argentina‚ we have no doubt that it will advance throughout all Latin America.” The Argentine situation is expected to be front and center at a meeting of thousands of Marxist militants planned for February where the borders of Argentina‚ Brazil‚ and Paraguay meet‚ said Freire‚ speaking from Brazil in a mixture of Spanish and Portuguese that would have been perfectly understandable to most of those tuning in. The Jan. 24 march was but the start of the global anti-Milei campaign‚ he said. “Argentina is a global laboratory‚” Argentine union leader Roberto Baradel said during his remarks. Baradel decried how Milei was making “the right to property the central right in our social‚ political‚ and economic life.” Félix Ovejero‚ a leader of Spain’s Sindicato Comisiones Obreras de España‚ agreed that Milei was leading an attack on “the working class of the world.” “It’s enough to see the outrages Milei said [in his speech at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting] in Davos‚ when he said there was no such thing as market failure‚” Ovejero argued. Classical Marxist Themes Nearly all speakers insisted that Milei posed a global threat‚ describing him as a fascist leading a crusade against the environment‚ women’s rights‚ and immigration‚ among other alleged targets. “On Jan. 24‚ we are all Argentines‚” said Freire‚ “because we belong to a single working class. Among us there is no border; we must regain the sense of class.” The Zoom call was but one of several such international efforts. In the days leading up to the Jan. 24 protest in Argentina‚ many other groups struck similar classical Marxist themes. Brazilian organizations such as the Trotskyite group Fracao Trotskista Quarta Internacional and the Marxist website Esquerda Diario‚ for example‚ used different social media platforms to help gin up turnout for the demonstration not just in Argentine cities‚ but in others around the world—including Paris‚ Brussels‚ Madrid‚ Santiago de Chile‚ Montevideo‚ Mexico City‚ Caracas‚ and New York. The communist student organization Juntos!‚ based in Sao Paulo‚ issued a statement calling for a large turnout in Argentina to protest “Milei and his attacks.” “If Argentina stops these attacks‚ it will strengthen the struggle in the entire world against the extreme right‚ strengthening the class struggle perspective as the path against our enemies‚” the student group said on Facebook. The statement was signed by several Marxist organizations‚ including the Union de Jovenes Comunistas‚ founded in Havana‚ Cuba‚ on April 4‚ 1962‚ just when the Castros were throwing their island nation completely into the Soviet camp and applying the screws at home to those who disagreed. What’s Next This is what is arrayed against Milei‚ who only took office Dec. 10. There was no street violence against him in this dry run‚ but that isn’t guaranteed going forward. Milei remains immensely popular‚ an asset he will need. Americans and Europeans who agree with Milei’s slogan of “Viva la Libertad‚ Carajo!” (or “Long Live Liberty‚ [Expletive]!”) have an interest in him succeeding. That’s because if he does succeed‚ there is a chance that rational policies can be tried at home. The Argentine president’s success against the Big Global Left also would give us lessons about a possible return of 2020-style‚ Black Lives Matter-sponsored violence.
