Policies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to minimize the effects of climate change should be guided by the best available science. A new research paper from The Heritage Foundation provides compelling evidence—as indicated in the chart below—that warming in the past 50 years or so has been overestimated by most computer models when compared to temperature observations by thermometer. The Heritage Foundation’s Backgrounder paper‚ written by the first author of this commentary‚ is titled “Global Warming: Observations vs. Climate Models.” (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.) A vocal minority of scientists often criticizes work such as this paper because their careers depend upon continued climate alarmism. For example‚ NASA’s Gavin Schmidt‚ a mathematician by training who now oversees a subset of the climate models at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies‚ took issue with a few of the Heritage paper’s arguments‚ to which the author responded in detail here and here. >;>;>; Read the entire Heritage Backgrounder here. So‚ how well do climate models predict the warming that actually has occurred? Let’s look at trends in surface air temperature‚ averaged over the United States since 1945. Why 1945? For two reasons. First‚ CO2 emissions began to dramatically increase after World War II. Second‚ when one compares the future warming response in 33 computer models to a doubling of atmospheric CO2 above preindustrial levels (called “2x CO2“)‚ 1945 is the starting year that produces the highest correlation between those warming trends and the eventual total amount of global-average warming in response to 2xCO2. In other words‚ 1945 is the starting date when computer models’ past warming trends best predict future rates of global warming. The distribution of those past model trends is shown here: Note that 33 out of 34 climate models produced warmer trends than those observed in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s official reanalyzed thermometer data. The warming trend produced by the computer models (1945-2023) is 64% greater than the observed temperatures. If we instead (as Schmidt suggested) restrict analysis to those computer models deemed by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to have the most likely response to 2X CO2 (2 to 5 degrees Celsius of net warming)‚ then the model-average warming trend is still 54% greater than that observed‚ with 25 of 26 models producing more warming than was observed. Why is this important? Well‚ for example‚ the United States does a congressionally mandated National Climate Assessment‚ now in its fifth iteration‚ in which a panel of climate activists interpret what the U.N. organization’s projections of climate change mean for U.S. residents. A reading of the National Climate Assessment leaves one with the impression that every weather disaster‚ whether floods or hurricanes or wildfires or whatever‚ now can be blamed on climate change caused by humans. No mention is made of the fact that almost all climate models exaggerate warming and associated effects in the U.S. In fact‚ the National Climate Assessment tends to lean toward the model projections showing the greatest projected effects in the U.S. More fundamentally‚ regardless of one’s perception of climate change‚ carbon-based regulation in the U.S. will not alter global temperatures.  Heritage Foundation research has shown that using the Environmental Protection Agency’s preferred Model for the Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Induced Climate Change‚ the associated policies would reduce global temperatures by less than 0.2 degrees Celsius by 2100‚ even using alarmist assumptions about the extent of climate change.  At the same time‚ China will continue to pump CO2 into the atmosphere as it has done for years.  Policies such as congressional Democrats’ proposed Green New Deal would reduce household income by at least $165‚000 over 20 years. Similar policies suggested by lawmakers also would have detrimental effects economically. Computer models can be useful for understanding real-world phenomena. However‚ until scientists and lawmakers stop relying on demonstrably biased climate models‚ such models can’t be trusted to guide public policy. Read the entire Heritage Backgrounder here. A city becomes a prime location for human trafficking when it hosts the Super Bowl‚ a busy and heavily attended event. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit for the National Football League’s big game. This makes it easier for traffickers to hide the movement and sale of their human wares. Super Bowl LVII‚ set for Sunday in Las Vegas‚ presents greater than normal obstacles for law enforcement targeting human traffickers. President Joe Biden’s border policies have allowed millions of illegal aliens into the U.S.‚ thus increasing the number of human trafficking victims. Las Vegas‚ where the Kansas City Chiefs will meet the San Francisco 49ers‚ is less than 300 miles from the southern border. The host city’s laws on sex work add serious difficulties. Nevada has allowed prostitution since 1971‚ the only state to do so. Federal‚ state‚ and local governments began taking action against human trafficking in Las Vegas well ahead of the Super Bowl. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto‚ D-Nev.‚ asked the NFL to disclose its efforts to combat human trafficking surrounding the game. “Specifically‚ we want to ensure we’re working together to prevent and respond to any increase in human trafficking that could occur alongside this major event‚” Masto said in a press release.  “We know it is a priority for the National Football League (NFL) and its philanthropic foundation to raise awareness about and take steps to address human trafficking issues‚” she added. Kimberly Small‚ CEO of the local nonprofit Signs of Hope‚ which fights sexual violence and exploitation‚ talked about the issue in an interview with the Las Vegas Sun. “We do focus a lot of our resources around these larger events because we know that there’s going to be an uptick in numbers‚” Small said‚ referring to sex trafficking and the Super Bowl. To counter this‚ Signs of Hope has partnered with the Las Vegas police. The nonprofit said it would follow numerous police officers‚ helping to identify potential sex trafficking cases leading up to Sunday’s game. The nonprofit aided officers in a similar manner during Formula One’s Las Vegas Grand Prix race in November. The Las Vegas Sun‚ citing police‚ reported that Signs of Hope’s efforts resulted “in more than 70 arrests and identifying 200 victims of trafficking.” Despite state officials and local nonprofits taking action‚ researchers on human trafficking have weighed in‚ the Biden administration is not doing the one thing that could have the most impact on human trafficking in the U.S.: closing the southern border. According to the U.S. State Department‚ 72% of human trafficking victims are immigrants. With over 14‚000 human trafficking cases a year‚ that comes down to just over 10‚000 cases a year. Human trafficking is the second-fastest-growing criminal enterprise. This means the numbers are likely higher than reported. The Biden administration recently has been in a legal battle with the state of Texas over control of the southern border. Texas is attempting to curb the number of illegal aliens the administration has allowed to cross over from Mexico by lining up storage containers topped with barbed wire. A direct connection exists between the border crisis and child trafficking‚ according to a 2023 report from Emma Waters‚ a research associate in The Heritage Foundation’s Devos Center for Life‚ Religion‚ and Family. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.) About 60% of children who cross into the U.S. unlawfully will end up in “prostitution‚ forced labor‚ and child pornography‚” the report says. The Biden administration reported releasing over 400 children last year to “nonrelated” adults in the U.S. Most of these individuals had other children already in their care‚ officials said. Last April‚ a whistleblower told Congress that the U.S. government is the “middleman” in the multibillion-dollar industry of human trafficking of minors through the porous southern border. Half of the most wanted child traffickers sought by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are from Mexico‚ according to Waters’ report. “The link between human trafficking and the porous southern border highlights the need for strong border security‚” Waters told The Daily Signal. “The Biden administration’s negligent enforcement at the southern border directly corresponds with the increase in human trafficking into the United States‚ especially during major national events such as the Super Bowl.” Waters also criticized Nevada’s legalization of sex work. “The legality of prostitution‚ along with increased demand for such services‚ will not only increase the ‘supply’ of women and children‚ but it will be more difficult to catch traffickers‚” she said. In an exclusive interview with The Daily Signal on Thursday‚ Sen. Eric Schmitt‚ R-Mo.‚ called the White House’s threat to “reduce” deportations of illegal aliens if Republicans didn’t vote for the recent Senate border and foreign aid bill “ridiculous”: I guess we shouldn’t be all that surprised that this White House would do something like this‚ considering they completely just opened the floodgates Day One. One of President Joe Biden’s first actions in office on Jan. 20‚ 2021‚ was to suspend former President Donald Trump’s stricter border measures‚ like border wall construction and requiring alleged asylum-seekers to apply for asylum from outside the U.S. rather than entering the country illegally. “We’re seeing the consequences of it now‚ you know‚ 9 million people here illegally‚” Schmitt said. “This is willful. This is not an accident. This is on purpose. They’re an ‘open borders’ crowd.” After dismantling Trump’s border measures via executive order‚ the Biden administration described the southern border as “secure” for over three years. The Daily Signal asked Schmitt why that messaging changed two months ago. Schmitt simply said‚ “Polling.” He continued: President Biden knows he’s at a real risk. I think this is now the No. 1 issue in front of Americans‚ even ahead of inflation and the economy‚ which are still big concerns for people‚ and rightfully so. But this unadulterated stream of people coming across the border‚ the signals that are sent—so obviously they’re not enforcing the law. But that sends a huge flashing red light to the people who are moving these folks‚ which are the cartels. Schmitt described the immense threat of the Mexican drug cartels that daily smuggle across the border paying families‚ young gang members‚ and fentanyl‚ and that traffic women and children for sex rings. Most illegal border crossers are not turned back because Schmitt says the cartels are “coaching people what to say” in order to gain asylum‚ “and then you have essentially people released into the interior of the United States and given court order dates sometimes in the 2030s” for their asylum hearings. The junior senator from Missouri mocked messaging from the Biden administration and liberal pundits that attempts to blame the border crisis on “those pesky MAGA Republicans and Donald Trump.” “Nobody’s buying this‚” Schmitt laughed. “It’s a total joke.” As for beginning to fix the mess at the border‚ Schmitt recommended a “stay in Mexico” policy‚ where immigrants and asylum-seekers would be required to stay in Mexico until their asylum claims were approved by U.S. customs offices.  He called the Venezuelan gang members who recently assaulted New York City police officers a “very real world example” of the need for stricter standards. Schmitt questioned the legality of Biden’s threat to reduce Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportations‚ as the decision to deport an individual is supposed to be made individually. “They’re willfully ignoring the law‚” he said. As a member of the Senate Armed Services and Commerce committees and the Joint Economic Committee‚ Schmitt said his biggest “red flag” concerning the recent waves of illegal immigrants was “the number of single adult males.” “We’re seeing folks from the Middle East‚ China‚” Schmit said‚ “and there are travel agencies that are popping up in Africa to move people here because they’re very well aware that anybody can come in right now.” Schmitt told The Daily Signal that his constituents who had immigrated to the United States legally hate this illegal immigration crisis the most. “They’re tired of this‚” Schmitt recalled. “They don’t like to see this. Everyone agrees that American students need better civics education. Civic knowledge in America is abysmal. Fewer than half of American adults can name the three branches of government—and a quarter can’t name any branch at all. Likewise‚ a quarter of Americans couldn’t name any of the five freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment. That’s why supporters of civics education might be inclined to celebrate the recent announcement that a private initiative called Educating for American Democracy would award $600‚000 in grants for K–5 pilot implementation projects to applicants from California‚ Georgia‚ Missouri‚ New York‚ and Wisconsin. But for supporters of true civics education‚ popping the champagne in this case would be a grave mistake. “EAD is a wolf in sheep’s clothing‚” warns Mark Bauerlein‚ a professor emeritus at Emory University. In his telling‚ the seemingly innocuous goals of Educating for American Democracy‚ such as inculcating an “inquisitive mindset towards civics and history‚” mask a more radical agenda. As Bauerlein explains: Yes‚ [Educating for American Democracy] contains a few traditionalist elements that deflect the charge of anti-conservatism. Overall‚ however‚ the EAD Roadmap circumscribes those elements with identity politics that left-wing teachers can plunder all year long. Here is what EAD really means by “inquisitive mindset”: a takedown of heroes‚ emphasis on victims (women and racial minorities)‚ denial of American exceptionalism‚ and a focus on the failings of the founding. According to David Randall‚ director of research at the National Association of Scholars‚ Educating for American Democracy is among the worst civics education resources. In a 2022 report by the Pioneer Institute and the National Association of Scholars‚ “Learning for Self-Government: A K-12 Civics Report Card‚” Randall gave the EAD an “F+” on a scale of A through F. (See chart below.) Why the poor grade? Randall said EAD is “the central political-administrative push to reshape American civics education into a radical mold‚” with the goal “to get every state civics education standard aligned for action civics and abbreviating as much as possible traditional civics education.” What is “action civics”? According to the Pedagogy Companion to the Roadmap to Educating for American Democracy‚ it is “a specialized form of project-based learning that emphasizes youth voice and expertise based on their own capabilities and experience‚ learning by direct engagement with a democratic system and institutions‚ and reflection on impact.” If you’re still confused‚ that’s because‚ as Randall observes‚ the proponents of action civics and other radical pedagogies use “impenetrable‚ jargon-heavy terms” to mask their true agenda. In his report‚ Randall explains what action civics really entails: What this means is that in ‘action civics’ history and government classes‚ students spend class time and receive class credit for work with ‘nongovernmental community organizations.’ This substitution degrades teachers’ and students’ esteem for classroom instruction‚ which is deemed not to have sufficient civic purpose in itself. It reduces the scarce time available for students actually to learn about the history of their country and the nature of their republic. Most importantly‚ it introduces a pedagogy that facilitates teachers’ ability to impose their personal predilections on their students‚ by influencing the process by which students choose ‘community partners’ with which to work. It also facilitates the ability of peer pressure to impose group predilections on individual‚ dissenting students. We may note that the advocates of ‘action civics’ explicitly distinguish this activity from volunteering: action civics is meant to change the political system‚ not to support civil society. In other words‚ Randall explains‚ in place of real civics‚ action civics “substitutes radical progressive pedagogy as a vocational training for activism.” In action civics courses‚ students get class credit for attending protests or supporting progressive organizations. The EAD website’s “Educator Resources” includes links to resources from left-wing organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center‚ whose “Learning for Justice” curriculum provides lessons on the “concepts of intersectionality‚ privilege and oppression.” Instead of inculcating students with a Madisonian appreciation for our constitutional order‚ EAD-backed action civics programs train Alinskyite activists. It’s easy to see why the Democrat-controlled Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and public school districts in Los Angeles and New York are excited to accept EAD funds. What’s harder to understand is why the Georgia Department of Education would be. Georgia’s superintendent of schools‚ Richard Woods‚ is a Republican who previously wrote that the “ideology of Critical Race Theory (CRT) has no place in our schools and classrooms” and cautioned that “[w]e must be vigilant against embracing polarizing practices that only seek to divide us.” Vigilance against embracing radical and polarizing practices in education is certainly necessary. It’s well known. Emails that just surfaced provide evidence that Facebook censored (at the very least) three posts because the Canadian health agency asked the company to do it. The messages also show a Facebook eager to “improve” the way it and Health Canada work together to censor Canadians. Health Canada finally had to provide the documents – two whole pages /s – no less than 11 months into being asked to release them. The documents concern the country’s government – specifically the Health Ministry – asking Facebook to remove “at least three” posts published by users. Of course‚ this has to do with Covid. At this point‚ an alien visiting the Earth would think that there is and never has been‚ any other health issue of significance or urgency on this planet‚ ever. But what’s interesting is that even as the pandemic became an “abandoned global crisis” – as others‚ of other kinds‚ were developing and taking up most of the government and media attention‚ and resources – as late as in June 2023‚ Health Canada was very reluctant to provide answers to MP Dan Albas questions about February 2021 Covid-related content censorship on Facebook. Source Rebel News The three known instances of censorship collusion that happened at that time concern the Canadian authorities asking Facebook to “remove users’ posts for ‘disinformation about lifting a COVID restriction’‚” RebelNews now writes. According to the emails‚ Facebook was not taking any chances. The company comprehensively reviled and likely smeared in the wake of the 2016 US election as some kind of a “helper” to the phantom “meddlers” eventually became as eager as it could be‚ to oblige.
