As deep-blue jurisdictions across the U.S. continue to reap the consequences of their “sanctuary city” policies, at least some leaders on the left are warming up to President Donald Trump’s tough approach to illegal immigration. In Chicago, for example, Democratic aldermen are proposing a new amendment to city ordinance that would align it more closely with the incoming Trump administration. As the Daily Caller reported: Raymond Lopez and Silvana Tabares, both Democrats, filed a proposed amendment to Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, which calls for exceptions when a migrant has been arrested or convicted of certain criminal activities. The aldermen argued in a public statement that it’s in the best interest of the city’s immigrant community to work with the incoming Trump administration in situations where wanted illegal migrants are involved in heinous crimes. “We believe that the best way to protect law-abiding non-citizens from the returning Trump Administration is by working with them in apprehending their priority targets: non-citizens that CHOOSE to engage in dangerous, illegal activity once they are in the United States,” Lopez said in a public statement. “Our current [Welcoming City Ordinance] prohibits any coordination or cooperation, even in the most heinous situations.” “This policy is dangerous to those law-abiding undocumented and non-citizens residents because, if someone is arrested or convicted of crimes, the federal authorities aren’t notified,” he continued. “Should the federal government go looking for those specific individuals seeking to deport them, there is a high probability that other targets, law-abiding undocumented and non-citizen residents, may be apprehended and deported as collateral damage. That is an entirely unacceptable yet avoidable situation.” The proposal would roll back an amendment that was made to the Welcoming City Ordinance in January 2021 which eliminated any exceptions to Chicago’s sanctuary policy. Previously, the Chicago Police Department was allowed to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if migrants had an outstanding criminal warrant, were in the city’s gang database or had been convicted of a felony or carried a pending felony charge. The man who fired a gun inside of Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington D.C. after believing “prominent Democrats were operating a child sex trafficking ring out of the pizzeria” was shot and killed by North Carolina police during a traffic stop last week. Edgar Welch, the Pizza Gate gunman, was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over in a traffic stop in Kannapolis, North Carolina. As police instructed Welch to exit the vehicle, he pulled a gun at the officers and was instructed to drop his weapon. Edgar Maddison Welch was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by officers in Kannapolis on Saturday night, according to a Kannapolis Police Department news release. One of the officers recognized the car as the vehicle of someone he had arrested and who had an outstanding warrant for a felony probation violation – Welch, police said. When the officers approached the vehicle to arrest Welch, police said the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the officers. After he was instructed to drop the weapon but didn’t, two officers shot Welch, authorities said. Emergency responders took Welch to the hospital, and he died from his injuries two days later, according to the release. None of the officers, nor the driver or another passenger, were injured. In 2016, authorities said, Welch drove from North Carolina to Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington with an assault rifle after believing an unfounded conspiracy theory that prominent Democrats were operating a child sex trafficking ring out of the pizzeria. The fake theory, dubbed “Pizzagate,” began circulating online during the 2016 presidential election. He entered the restaurant armed, and as customers fled the scene, Welch shot at a locked closet inside. After realizing there were no children held captive in the pizzeria, Welch peacefully surrendered. No one was injured. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is planning to replace them with community notes similar to those on X. Several other prominent companies have rolled back DEI policies in recent months. McDonald’s announced on Monday that it was ending some of its DEI policies, saying that while it’s committed to inclusion, it dropped its “aspirational representational goals,” as well as ending its DEI pledge for suppliers.
