Ten Americans, some of whom had been held hostage for months by Venezuela’s socialist government, are heading back home after the Trump administration secured their release on Friday. In exchange for the 10 Americans, over 200 Venezuelan migrants that the United States had sent to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison will be released to Venezuela, The New York Times reported. “Thanks to@POTUS’s leadership, ten Americans who were detained in Venezuela are on their way to freedom,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on X. “I want to thank my team at the @StateDep & especially [Salvadoran] President @nayibbukele for helping secure an agreement for the release of all of our American detainees, plus the release of Venezuelan political prisoners.” Bukele said on Friday that his government “handed over all the Venezuelan nationals detained in our country, accused of being part of the criminal organization Tren de Aragua (TDA). My brother is an innocent man who was used as a political pawn by the Maduro regime,” Castaneda’s family said in a statement. The family added that several traumatic brain injuries Castaneda suffered while serving his country “impaired his judgment and risk mitigation” and “led him to make a bad decision to travel to Venezuela.” Another freed hostage is Lucas Hunter, an American and French citizen, who was on a kite surfing trip in Colombia when he was nabbed by Venezuelan authorities near the border, according to the Times. After their release, some of the American hostages told the Times that they were beaten and subjected to “psychological torture.” The United States has imposed sanctions on Venezuela, which is led by dictator Nicolas Maduro, targeting the country’s government and oil sector “in response to Maduro’s repression.”

President Trump has filed a federal libel lawsuit against Dow Jones, News Corp, Rupert Murdoch, and two Wall Street Journal reporters, court documents revealed on Friday. According to the docket filed in Miami federal court, Trump is suing for libel, assault, and slander following a Thursday Wall Street Journal article claiming a 2003 birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein that included a sketch of a naked woman was authored by President Trump. The Wall Street Journal claimed that it had obtained a “letter bearing Trump’s name” that was included in a birthday book created for Epstein. The Journal notably did not include an image of the alleged letter, and President Trump said on Thursday that he “will be suing the Wall Street Journal, NewsCorp, and Mr. Murdoch, shortly” over the “fake” story. “The Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch, personally, were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE and, if they print it, they will be sued,” the president said in a Truth Social post. Trump said that Rupert Murdoch, owner of News Corp, “stated that he would take care of it.” “But, obviously, did not have the power to do so,” Trump added. As The Daily Wire previously reported, although Trump and Epstein were friendly for several years when they both lived in New York City, there is no evidence that Trump was involved in any of Epstein’s criminal wrongdoing. Epstein was not accused of sexual relations with young girls until 2005, years after Trump kicked him out of his Mar-a-Lago club and the two had a falling out.
