According to Shirazi, Muslims worldwide must make such enemies “regret their words and mistakes.”
The fatwa is not symbolic. It echoes the infamous 1989 edict against author Salman Rushdie, which led to multiple assassination attempts and a near-fatal stabbing in 2022. This new fatwa, however, names actual world leaders and invites global jihad-style action, escalating the stakes far beyond literature or free speech debates.

Intelligence analysts and independent observers warn this could be the trigger for sleeper cells worldwide. While Iran has always maintained networks like Hezbollah, the fatwa elevates religious obligation to violent action. If even a fraction of Iran’s sympathizers act on this edict, the results could dwarf previous attacks.
