What We’re Reading: How U.S. States Are Resisting Book Bans

Welcome back to our weekly behind-the-scenes glimpse at what’s getting our team talking. Tell us what you’ve been reading at info@reasonstobecheerful.world and we just might feature it here. Freedom to read It’s Banned Books Week! To mark the occasion, Anythink Libraries has launched free access to roughly 300 banned and challenged titles, via an app, for anyone in Colorado — no library card required. As CPR News reports in a story shared by RTBC Executive Editor Will Doig, the collection’s release comes as litigation over a book ban in Elizabeth, Colorado, continues. From California to Vermont, a growing number of states are enacting “freedom to read” laws that protect Americans’ rights to read what they want. For Anythink executive director Mark Fink, creating the Freedom to Read Collection is about preserving intellectual freedom and providing access to content and stories that resonate with a variety of audiences. Will says: The number of book bans in the U.S. is higher than it’s been in decades. Initiatives like this one in Colorado are helping to turn the tide, but you don’t need to wait for others to come up with solutions. You can demand access to books of ALL kinds in your own local libraries and schools. PEN America has some tips to make sure your voice is heard. Dogged determination Here at RTBC, we love shining a spotlight on everyday people who recognize a problem in their community and do something about it. Enter Carl Wilson, a long-haul trucker who could see a solution to the dangers posed by elk crossing his local freeway, so he went and spoke to representatives from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. And the Idaho Transportation Department. And the Idaho Department of Lands. And… you get the idea. In the U.S., collisions between motorists and wildlife kill more than 200 people and injure over 26,000 every year, at an annual cost of more than $8 billion. This High Country News story about a new wildlife corridor, shared by RTBC Interim Editorial Director Tess Riley, celebrates Wilson’s determination to make a dent in those numbers and help preserve the elk he had so long admired. Tess says: Carl Wilson sadly didn’t live to see the wildlife crossing project he initiated completed, but his friend and collaborator (handily also a civil engineer) gave him her word she’d see it through to completion. As of August, the bridge — which cost $645,000 instead of the usual millions of dollars these kind of projects usually amount to — is officially open to wildlife to help them safely cross the freeway. We were therefore delighted to find out today that thousands of people who care deeply about the state of their local rivers have been the driving force behind the biggest legal claim ever brought in the U.K. over environmental pollution. The lawsuit, which has just been filed at the High Court, alleges that two poultry businesses and a water company have caused widespread pollution in three rivers. Oliver Holland from the law firm Leigh Day said the claim was “the culmination of an extraordinary effort by local community members and campaign groups to research, monitor and advocate for their rivers.” The post What We’re Reading: How U.S. States Are Resisting Book Bans appeared first on Reasons to be Cheerful.

AWESOME: Texas National Guard Arrives in Illinois!

Gov. Greg Abbott has deployed around 200 Texas National Guard to Illinois! The troops will be there for at least 60 days and support federal agents as they crack down on illegal immigration and crime. Take a look: The elite Texas National Guard. Ever ready. Deploying now. pic.twitter.com/7lXe7Wpmue — Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) October 7, 2025 ‘READY TO GO’: Texas National Guard troops arrive in Illinois on a mission to help protect federal functions and property, despite opposition from Democrats. pic.twitter.com/tVDkYMaxkf — Fox News (@FoxNews) October 8, 2025 The deployment of the Texas National Guard to Illinois comes as anti-ICE protestors have clashed with agents in recent days. Fox News has more: Texas National Guard troops arrived in Illinois on Tuesday to protect federal personnel and property amid anti-immigration protests, the Pentagon confirmed. A Pentagon official said 200 guardsmen were mobilized for an initial 60-day period. Troops arrived in Illinois “in support of the Federal Protection Mission to protect federal functions, personnel, and property,” according to a Pentagon statement. About a dozen people have been arrested near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, where anti-immigration crowds have been gathering for days. After refusing to help his citizens himself, Illinois Gov. Pritzker tried to stop Gov. Abbott from sending National Guardsmen from Texas. Gov. Abbott basically told him to go kick rocks! Earlier today, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson criticized the deployment of the National Guard as “illegal” and “unconstitutional” as lawsuits were filed to prevent it. And yet, it’s happening anyways! From ABC News: Pritzker said at a news conference on Monday that over the weekend, he called on Abbott “to immediately withdraw his support of this decision” to send the Texas National Guard members to Chicago. Earlier Tuesday, Abbott had replied to Pritzker on social media, saying, “I fully authorized the President to call up 400 members of the Texas National Guard to ensure safety for federal officials.” During a news conference on Tuesday morning, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said he had not received no advance information on the whereabouts of the Texas National Guard troops. “We have not heard directly, of course, from the president or his administration and my expectation is that, regardless of what this administration is doing, I’m going to remain firm and committed to protecting the rights and the civility of our nation and will start right here in Chicago,” Johnson said. “We do know that much like what we’ve seen in other parts of the country, there is a process that the National Guard goes through before they’re actually released into the streets of Chicago or anywhere,” Johnson added. Johnson said that what he does know is that the deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago is “illegal, unconstitutional, it’s dangerous, it’s wrong.” The state of Illinois and city of Chicago filed a lawsuit on Monday seeking to block the federalization and deployment of the National Guard. Here are some more photos from the troops’ arrival: pic.twitter.com/JGgo8OOYex — Eric Daugherty (@EricLDaugh) October 7, 2025 Currently, the National Guardsmen are at an Army Reserve Training Center in Elwood, IL — around 55 miles outside Chicago. BREAKING: Man With Over 200 Explosives ARRESTED Outside Annual Red Mass for Supreme Court

A potential assassination attempt on Supreme Court justices was thwarted on Sunday. Police arrested a very deranged man who was in possession of over 200 explosives outside of the Cathedral of St. Matthew in D.C. The annual Red Mass ceremony, which is traditionally attended by Supreme Court justices to ring in the new term, was being held that day. Here’s everything we know: A man arrested with 200 explosives outside of a church event for Supreme Court justices on Sunday had a manifesto showing that his anger was directed at the Supreme Court, ICE, Catholics, and Jews, @realdailywire found. Last year, 3 conservative justices were at the special Mass. pic.twitter.com/x29gBfDYX9 — Luke Rosiak (@lukerosiak) October 7, 2025 41-year-old Louis Gehri was apprehended by cops after he told them he had explosives and threatened to use them. He led them right to his tent, which was full of containers filled with chemicals used in explosive devices, molotov cocktails, and bottle rockets. There was also a manifesto full of hate towards the Catholic church, Jews, SCOTUS, and ICE. What a lunatic. The Hill shared more very bizarre details: Devices were found inside his front pocket and a backpack he was carrying on the scene, in addition to a tent encampment set up in close proximity to the cathedral, the records show. Authorities also found vials of nitromethane, a colorless, organic compound used in explosive devices, the court records showed. Geri said he had a background in explosives and told officers at the scene that the vials were intended to be used as grenades with rubber bands to secure the fuse, according to court records, per the Post. In addition to the nitromethane, he was found in possession of Molotov cocktails and modified bottle rockets covered with aluminum foil and treated in a pyrotechnic solution. Court documents said the devices appeared “fully functional,” the Post reported. “You might want to stay back and call the federales, I have explosives,” Geri told officers when he was asked to leave, according to court records. The officer speaking with him called over a sergeant with the bomb squad, who then engaged with Geri, who was previously banned from the premise, and again asked him to disperse due to the event. “Do you want me to throw one out, I’ll test one out on the streets? I have a hundred-plus of them,” he told the sergeant, according to court records. “If you just step back, I’ll take out that tree. No one will get hurt, there will just be a hole where that tree used to be.” He later told officers, “several of your people are gonna die from one of these” and eventually handed over a nine-page document outlining his disdain for Catholicism, Judaism, Supreme Court justices and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The pages were torn from his notebook entitled “Written Negotiations for the Avoidance of Destruction of Property via Detonation of Explosives.” Geri is facing multiple charges and being held in jail without bond. WUSA9 reported: Geri has been charged with unlawful entry, manufacture, transfer, use, possession or transportation of Molotov cocktails, or other explosives for unlawful purposes, threats to kidnap or injure a person, two counts of assault on police officer, possession of destructive device, manufacture or possession of weapon of mass destruction (hate crime) and resisting arrest. Geri was arrested just two days after the sentencing of would-be Kavanaugh assassin Nicholas Roske…who now goes by “Sophie” and got off with a mere 8 years in prison. Perhaps he was inspired? Police say the bombs were viable. This was 2 days after a Biden judge let Kavanaugh’s attempted assassin off with a slap on the wrist, over prosecutors’ concerns about the need to send a message that would deter others This could add to @tedcruz‘s calls to impeach Judge Boardman pic.twitter.com/Thuyuk61lo — Luke Rosiak (@lukerosiak) October 7, 2025 Louis Geri was originally from New Jersey. He had a record of prior arrests, per the Daily Wire: According to public records reviewed by The Daily Wire, Geri was from Vineland, New Jersey, but had been living in a motel in Mesa, Arizona, for the last several years. In 2021, an Arizona jury found him guilty of indecent exposure. He was admitted to state prison in August 2022 and released in May 2023, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections. The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle is the very same church where leftists protested Justice Kavanaugh a few years ago. It’s hard to believe, but leftists previously picketed the church during the Red Mass in prior years to target Kavanaugh with the smear that he was a gang-rapist. On top of that defamation, he’s now suffered an assassination attempt and now a would-be bombing at that very Mass. pic.twitter.com/2StEUdclIP — Luke Rosiak (@lukerosiak) October 7, 2025 In previous years, multiple Supreme Court Justices attended Red Mass — including last year, when all three conservative SCOTUS justices attended. However, this year, none of them attended due to security concerns — and, in light of what this maniac was apparently plotting, I can’t say I blame them. National Catholic Reporter confirmed: Due to security concerns, no Supreme Court justices attended this year’s Red Mass Oct. 5 at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington. The annual Mass prays for jurists and public officials the day before the start of the Supreme Court’s term. So, now, my biggest question is: has this guy come out as trans yet? Or do we have to wait until he gets closer to trial for him to start going by “Lois?”
