Dog Happily Volunteers As Mom’s Practice Patient For Nursing School
Every nursing student should have a Bella. Olivia Hancock is a nursing student, and Bella is her black Labrador. Don’t worry — no dogs were harmed in the making of these videos. It is a practice run that emphasizes good bedside manner and provides a clear explanation of the procedure. Bella might be a dog, but she makes a perfect patient.

Once the patient preparation was complete, it was time for the “procedure.” Watching Bella lie so still on the “exam table” is hilarious. Liv might get a surprise with her first non-dog patient because humans won’t be that still. Bella has no clue what a catheter is, or she might be more concerned. (No catheter was actually inserted.)

Listening to Liv explain the procedure to Bella is great. She seems to have excellent bedside manner. One of the biggest mistakes a doctor or nurse can make is failing to explain what is happening to a patient. The person is already anxious about things. Knowing what is going on can ease that tension, making the patient feel more at ease about any procedure.
Bella may not understand the words, but she can sense the calm tone Liv is using. She maintains an even speaking voice, not raising or lowering the volume. It is a relaxing cadence. Bella was an excellent dog patient during the wound care practice video.

Bella may only understand that she is getting attention, or she might realize how much she is helping her mom. She is definitely earning extra treats for being a great animal patient.
