FBI Opens Terror Probe After Homemade Bombs In NYC Linked To ISIS

The FBI is reportedly looking at an attempted bombing in New York City as a potential act of terror after at least one of the suspects — who wielded a homemade bomb at a protest outside Gracie Mansion the day before — claimed that he had been inspired by ISIS. NBC News correspondent Tom Winter reported on Sunday that one of the suspects referenced ISIS directly in statements to law enforcement after his apprehension, prompting the terror probe. CNN reported that both suspects admitted to being “inspired by ISIS,” but said that officials do not believe that there is a connection between the New York City attack and the military action unfolding in Iran. According to a report published Sunday by CBS News, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has taken over the investigation into Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19 — both of whom live in Pennsylvania — after a lab in Quantico confirmed that what appeared to homemade bombs were not “hoax devices” but deadly Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) using components that have been seen in previous terror attacks. The devices, two sources told CBS, contained sports drink bottles filled with explosives that were set inside glass jars packed with nails, bolts, and screws. The explosives were connected to a firework described as an “M-80-type” with a fuse. The sources said that the explosive material inside was called triacetone triperoxide, or TATP, which is a white powder made from two readily available household chemicals: acetone and hydrogen peroxide. Multiple reports suggest that the investigation is also likely to probe the recent travels of the suspects, both of whom have made extended visits to Istanbul in the last two years. Balat stayed in the Turkish city for months, from early May of 2025 to late August of the same year. Kayumi also traveled to Istanbul, but only stayed for a few weeks in July and August of 2024. He also traveled to Saudi Arabia in March of 2024. Fox News congressional correspondent Bill Melugin also reported that “New York City IED suspect Emir Balat’s parents are both from Turkey & were naturalized into US citizens in 2017, while Ibrahim Kayumi’s parents are both from Afghanistan. Mom naturalized in 2009, dad naturalized in 2004.” New York City’s Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a statement about the attack on Sunday, which had taken place as competing protests played out in front of Gracie Mansion. Mamdani specifically named January 6th defendant Jake Lang — who led a protest of about 20 people — and referred to him as a “white supremacist,” saying his demonstration was “rooted in bigotry and racism” and was not welcome in New York City. While he condemned the violent act that followed, he did not mention the names of the terror suspects or their potential inspiration. Instead, he said simply, “The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are.”

NYC Terror Scare Deepens As Bomb Squad Races To New Threat Near Mayor’s Mansion

New York City police locked down part of Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Sunday as the investigation into a terror scare near the mayor’s residence expanded after officers discovered another suspicious device. The New York City Police Department warned residents to avoid East End Avenue between 81st Street and 82nd Street as officers responded to what authorities described as ongoing police activity. Later, police confirmed the situation was connected to the investigation into an improvised explosive device used during unrest the previous day. “In connection with the ongoing investigation into the improvised explosive device deployed yesterday, the NYPD has identified a suspicious device in a vehicle on East End Avenue between 81st Street and 82nd Street,” the department said in an advisory. Officers froze the area around the vehicle and began limited evacuations of nearby buildings while the bomb squad assessed the device. The residence is home to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Authorities later confirmed that at least one of the devices used during the confrontation was a genuine improvised explosive device capable of causing “serious injury or death.”  The incident unfolded Saturday when two opposing demonstrations gathered near East End Avenue and East 87th Street. One protest, organized by activist Jake Lang, drew a small group of demonstrators opposing public Muslim prayer in the city. A significantly larger group of counterprotesters also assembled nearby, and tensions escalated between the two sides.  Police said an 18-year-old counter-protester allegedly ignited and threw a device toward the protest area before it struck a barrier and extinguished itself near officers. Investigators said the device appeared to be a glass jar wrapped in tape and packed with metal shrapnel such as nuts and bolts along with a fuse. In a statement Sunday, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the device used Saturday, “is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb. It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death.” After speculation swirled online of the actual threat level posed. Authorities also said the suspect attempted to deploy a second device before officers intervened, arresting two individuals in connection with the explosives. Additional arrests were made during the unrest, including one protester accused of using pepper spray.  The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has joined the investigation as authorities analyze the devices and determine whether additional suspects or explosives may be involved. The suspicious device discovered Sunday inside a parked vehicle several blocks away prompted a renewed security response as investigators worked to determine whether it is connected to the devices used during Saturday’s confrontation. Police have not yet announced whether the newly discovered device is functional, but the presence of the bomb squad and building evacuations underscores the seriousness of the situation as investigators continue sweeping the area. Mamdani has not provided any statement or comment on the latest development in what seems to be a worrying trend. His remarks on Saturday’s incident split the blame between protestors and counter-protesters. Officials have urged residents to avoid the neighborhood while the investigation continues. Streets in the surrounding area remain closed as authorities assess the device and work to secure the scene.

NYT's Double Standard on Israel Posts: Pro-Hamas 'Rape Hoax' Charge Not the 'Hateful' One

The New York Times clearly loves Mayor Zohran Mamdani more than Democrat Rep. Daniel Goldman -- because they're more sympathetic to Hamas terrorists than they are to Israel. Look no further than two stories by local political reporter Jeffrey Mays.  Mamdani’s wife Rama Duwaji engaged with offensive social media posts celebrating the October 7, 2023 massacre of Israeli Jews by Hamas, as exposed by Jewish Insider. The Free Press found more, including one that referred to the attack as a “mass rape hoax.” Meanwhile, Goldman's wife Corinne Levy Goldman was put on the defensive by the left over his wife’s pro-Israel “likes” on social media.  On March 4, the New York Times ran a piece by Mays claiming Mrs. Goldman engaged with posts “that used what some saw as insensitive or hateful language directed at Palestinians and groups or people who supported them or criticized Israel,” after the Hamas terrorist invasion of Israel on October 7. That story, headlined “Dan Goldman Faces Questions About Wife’s Social Media Stances on Israel,” made the Times’ March 5 print edition.  Some of the supposedly “hateful” posts? Take it away, Mays: In one instance, she liked a post from @EndWokeness that showed people holding a “Jews for Palestine” sign with the message, “Chickens for KFC.” She also liked posts suggesting that people supporting “Free Palestine” be sent to Gaza, to live under its rules. Yes, those were apparently the very worst examples Mays could find. The next day Mays, writing with Sally Goldenberg, covered the controversy over Instagram “likes” by  Zohran Mamdani’s wife Rama in support of the vicious murders, kidnappings, and rapes of October 7. Yet those posts weren’t characterized as “hateful” or even offensive, but whitewashed as merely “supportive of the Palestinian cause” under the headline “Mamdani Defends Wife Amid Criticism of Her Support for Palestinian Cause.” The headline currently reads: “After Social Media Scrutiny, Mamdani Says His Wife Is a ‘Private Person.’”  Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Friday sought to create a wall between his leadership of New York City and the private views of his wife, Rama Duwaji, after being asked about her social media activity surrounding the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Ms. Duwaji liked posts on Instagram that were supportive of the Palestinian cause immediately after the attacks, in which roughly 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage, according to the Israeli authorities. Israeli military forces responded with military action in Gaza that has killed more than 70,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. .... “My wife is the love of my life and she’s also a private person who has held no formal position on my campaign or in my City Hall,” Mr. Mamdani said during an unrelated news conference Friday morning…. (The same “private person” who posed for the cover of the fashion magazine The Cut.) Mr. Mamdani was responding to a Jewish Insider article that highlighted a handful of instances in which Ms. Duwaji had liked Instagram posts supportive of the Palestinian cause immediately after the Oct. 7 attacks. One post, shared by an account called The Slow Factory, a social justice nonprofit, on the day of the Hamas attack, showed a bulldozer that appeared to breach the barrier between Israel and Gaza. The caption read, “Breaking the walls of apartheid and military occupation” with the date of the attack beneath. Mays quoted only leftist Jewish sources, who naturally defended Duwaji. Sophie Ellman-Golan, director of strategic communications at Jews For Racial & Economic Justice, a progressive organizing group for the Jewish left, said that Mr. Mamdani has been clear about his views regarding Israel and the war in Gaza. Using identical language from his hostile story on Rep. Goldman, Hays again took the anti-Israel side by smearing Corinne Levy's benign social media posts in support of Israel as “hateful or insensitive toward Palestinians.” Mays' article on Duwaji ended with a defense of its subject, using left-wing Ellman-Golan as his mouthpiece. Ms. Ellman-Golan said it was unfair to equate Ms. Duwaji’s social media likes with those of Ms. Goldman’s, in part because Mr. Goldman’s wife serves as his campaign treasurer while Ms. Duwaji had no official role in Mr. Mamdani’s campaign for mayor. It is true that the “likes” cannot be equated. After all, Duwaji was liking posts celebrating murder, rape and massacre of Jews by Hamas. Conservatives on social media recalled that the Duwaji-excusing Times tried to make a huge scandal of Mrs. Sam Alito's choice of flags in 2024. They were more upset by the Alito flags than the foiled Brett Kavanaugh assassination plot. Wall Street Journal movie critic Kyle Smith took to X to vent outrage over the Times’ framing of Duwaji’s social media acts: "This framing….it’s breathtaking. I’m speechless. Hamas murdered over 1000 people on Oct. 7.”

Counter-protester lights explosive amid anti-Mamdani protest, utters 'Allahu Akbar' — but NYC mayor rips 'bigotry and racism'

A counter-protester lit what police said was an explosive device during a protest Saturday against Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York City. The counter-protester also was caught on video uttering "Allahu Akbar" as police were arresting him.New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Sunday announced that the device was real — not a hoax device or smoke bomb, WNYW reported.'Based on preliminary examination and X-ray imaging, the devices, which were a bit smaller than a football, appear to be a jar wrapped in black tape, importantly, with nuts, bolts, and screws along with a hobby fuse that could be lit.'"It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death," Tisch said on X.A second deployed device was still being analyzed Sunday. The initial protest, called “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City,” was led by Jake Lang; police called Lang a "far-right provocateur." The protest outside Gracie Mansion — the mayor's residence — drew a counter-protest dubbed “Run The Nazis Out Of NYC.”Fistfights erupted between the two sides, the New York Times reported.Tisch stated during a press conference following the altercation that counter-protester Emir Balat, 18, “lit and threw an ignited device.”“Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke as it traveled through the air before it struck a barrier and extinguished itself a few feet from police officers,” Tisch said. RELATED: Mamdani walks back popular progressive campaign promise to pedestrians One of the devices deployed at Saturday's dueling protests in New York City. Photo by CHARLY TRIBALLEAU / AFP via Getty ImagesBalat then ran to retrieve a similar device from another man — identified as 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi — lit the device, ran toward the protest, and dropped it, WNYW-TV reported.Balat and Kayumi were arrested at the scene Saturday and were in custody in connection with the devices, police told the station. It isn't clear if the device that was determined to be an explosive was the one that was thrown or the one that was dropped.“Based on preliminary examination and X-ray imaging, the devices, which were a bit smaller than a football, appear to be a jar wrapped in black tape, importantly, with nuts, bolts, and screws along with a hobby fuse that could be lit,” Tisch added.A video circulated online showed a male hurling one of the devices reportedly into the crowd of anti-Mamdani protesters. A separate clip showed NYPD officers arresting the same male, who repeatedly uttered “Allahu Akbar.”RELATED: Austin’s ‘Property of Allah’ shooter is immigration failure made flesh Photo by CHARLY TRIBALLEAU / AFP via Getty ImagesNo explosions or injuries were reported.Lang described the incident as a direct threat to his life: “Americans Christians WILL NOT be intimidated by ISLAMIC TERROR ATTACKS!!!. Last night after the attempted assassination on my life with a F**KING NAILBOMB in NYC.”However, Mamdani's press secretary Joe Calvello had a different take in a statement to WNYW in an earlier story: "The ‘Crusade Against Islamification’ gathering held outside Gracie Mansion today by Jake Lang, a vile white supremacist, was despicable and Islamaphobic."On Sunday, Mamdani released a statement also condemning Lang as a “white supremacist” and claiming his protest was “rooted in bigotry and racism.”“Such hate has no place in New York City. It is an affront to our city’s values and the unity that defines who we are,” Mamdani also wrote. While the mayor condemned the use of an explosive device, he did not acknowledge that police said it was carried out by a counter-protester. Not to mention that the suspect repeatedly uttered "Allahu Akbar" during his arrest.“What followed was even more disturbing. Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are,” Mamdani said of the deployment of the explosive device.Article III Project’s Mike Davis slammed Mamdani for failing to "condemn" the "Islamists" police arrested.“Has your wife praised the terrorists yet? Are you sad the bombs didn’t detonate? Resign,” Davis stated.“The Trump Justice Department must bring federal terrorism and related charges. There is no chance justice will get delivered by the Islamic Caliphate of New York,” Davis added.Journalist Nick Sortor in a social media post reacted as follows: “In Mamdani’s New York City, Islamists throwing BOMBS at Pro-Christian protestors while screaming ‘ALLAHU AKHBAR’ is apparently NOT considered terrorism. 9/11 was forgotten awfully quickly.”Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) blamed the violence on “a serious radicalization problem on both the far left and the far right.”“No one should be surprised,” Adams wrote in a post on social media. “After years of hateful rhetoric and incitement, attempts to justify attacks on Jews in Israel, praise for violence like the killing of a CEO, and chants about ‘globalizing the intifada’ and ‘Death to America,’ words have now escalated into violence on the streets of New York City, with explosives being thrown.”Like Blaze News?
