7 tips for zero-waste air travel

This month is Reduce Plastic Month, also known as Plastic Free July in the United States, making it the perfect time to revisit simple but impactful ways to cut down on plastic waste, especially while traveling. With summer in full swing, many of us are heading off on long-awaited vacations or business trips. And while air travel isn’t the most eco-friendly option, it’s often necessary in our globalized world. Fortunately, even if you’re flying, there are plenty of easy ways to minimize your environmental impact, particularly when it comes to avoiding single-use plastics. Whether you’re traveling across the country or heading abroad, these seven zero-waste tips will help you stay planet-friendly at 30,000 feet. 1. Go digital Skip the printouts. Most airlines now offer digital boarding passes through their apps, and you can save hotel confirmations, tickets, and maps to your phone for offline access. Not only is it more sustainable, but it also keeps you organized! No more fumbling through piles of paper at the gate. Just make sure your device is charged. 2. Pack your own snacks Those tiny plastic-wrapped airplane snacks add up fast. Bring your own food in reusable containers or resealable bags instead. TSA allows solid food through security, and this way you’ll have tastier, healthier options without the waste. Just be mindful of fresh produce rules if you’re flying internationally or to places like Hawaii or Puerto Rico. 3. Bring a reusable water bottle Airport water is expensive. And plastic waste from disposable bottles is even worse. Pack a reusable bottle and fill it after you pass through security. Many airports now have water refill stations, and your wallet (and the planet) will thank you. 4. Refill your own travel-sized containers Rather than buying travel-sized toiletries every time you fly, invest in refillable containers you can use again and again. Simply decant your shampoo, conditioner, and lotion from full-sized bottles at home. Bonus: Labeling them avoids surprises at your destination. 5. Switch to solid personal care products Want to skip the liquid hassle altogether? Try solid shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and body soap. Toothpaste tablets, mouthwash tabs, and lotion bars are also becoming easier to find, and they’re compact, spill-proof, and plastic-free. 6. Assemble a zero-waste travel kit Create a small travel kit with essentials like a cloth napkin, reusable utensils, metal or silicone straw, and food container. Toss in a reusable shopping bag if you plan to browse duty-free or shop at your destination. This kit can live in your carry-on so you’re always prepared. 7. Politely decline single-use items From snacks and plastic-wrapped earbuds to drinks in plastic cups, flights are full of single-use offers. If you’ve brought your own supplies, feel free to politely say no. If you don’t have a reusable water bottle, try asking for a can or bottle instead of a cup; it’s often easier to recycle. Final thoughts: You don’t have to be perfect to make a difference. Every small choice adds up during busy travel months. So whether you’re jetting off for adventure or heading home for the holidays, let Reduce Plastic Month inspire your journey to be a little lighter on the planet. The post 7 tips for zero-waste air travel first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

This high-tech paint ‘sweats’ to cool your home naturally

What if your home could beat the heat by sweating, just like your skin? A team of scientists in Singapore may have just made that possible. In a promising new development, researchers at Nanyang Technological University have created a cement-based paint that mimics the body’s natural cooling mechanism: sweating. Unlike typical commercial cooling paints that repel water to protect buildings, this new paint stores water in its porous structure and slowly releases it, evaporating heat away in the process. “The key is passive cooling,” explains materials scientist Li Hong. That means the system works without electricity or any mechanical input. While many existing cooling paints use radiative cooling (reflecting sunlight and beaming heat into the sky) this method falters in humid climates, where moisture in the air traps heat and blocks it from escaping. So the researchers got creative. Triple-action technology The new paint combines three forms of passive cooling: radiative cooling, evaporative cooling (think: how your sweat cools you), and solar reflection. It reflects an impressive 88 to 92 percent of sunlight, even when wet, and emits up to 95 percent of the heat it absorbs. To boost its performance, the team added nanoparticles for reflectivity and durability, along with a touch of polymer and salt to help retain moisture and prevent cracking. After two years of real-world testing on three mini houses in Singapore, the results spoke for themselves. One house was painted with conventional white paint, one with a commercially available cooling paint, and one with the experimental sweat-inspired formula. The first two faded to yellow under the equatorial sun, while, as coauthor Jipeng Fei put it, “our paint was still white.” Maintaining that brilliant white color is essential for high reflectivity and consistent cooling. Energy savings and climate resilience Performance-wise, the new paint is impressive. It helped reduce energy use for air conditioning by 30 to 40 percent in test homes. And that matters: “Around 60 percent of building energy is used for space cooling,” notes coauthor See Wee Koh. If adopted widely, this kind of cooling paint could significantly slash electricity demand and help buildings stay comfortable with far less reliance on energy-guzzling air conditioners. Beyond individual homes, the implications are bigger. Cities across the globe suffer from the urban heat island effect, where concrete-heavy environments trap and radiate heat. Air conditioning, while effective indoors, only worsens the problem by releasing hot air into already sweltering neighborhoods. In contrast, this paint emits heat as invisible infrared radiation, which escapes into the atmosphere without warming the immediate surroundings. “Singapore has very severe UHI,” Koh points out, referencing the city’s intense urban heat island issue, “and so do other regions like the Middle East.” With climate change turning up the global thermostat, innovations like this could offer a passive, planet-friendly way to beat the heat.
