  One of history’s most slandered yet enduringly captivating queens, the clever and charismatic Cleopatra isn’t often celebrated for her role as a mother. Frankly, that’s a disservice to her memory. Cleopatra wasn’t just a political powerhouse—she was also the fiercely protective parent of four potential game-changers, each raised with her sharp wit and strategic mind. Add to that her role as stepmother to another, and you’ve got a family saga worthy of an epic. The nearly deposed female pharaoh famously engineered her introduction to Caesar by having herself smuggled into his quarters rolled up in a rug (or, if you prefer, a linen sack—equally dramatic). This wasn’t a flirtation—it was survival. She actually was in the city in secret, knowing her life was in danger. Her brother-husband, Ptolemy XIII, had pushed her out of power, and Cleopatra was determined to reclaim her throne. Enter Caesar, whose troops had Alexandria under their heels. Together, they turned the city’s war-torn chaos into Cleopatra’s victory, solidifying her rule and sealing an alliance that was as steamy as it was strategic.   The partnership wasn’t just about survival—it was about ensuring stability. Source: GetArchive   The fruit of their union was Ptolemy XV Caesar, better known as Caesarion, or “Little Caesar.” Cleopatra wasted no time in presenting her son as Caesar’s rightful heir, a move that sparked an inferno of gossip and outrage in Rome, where Caesar’s legal wife (Calpurnia) resided. Caesar did not shy away from the claim either. When Cleopatra and Caesarion visited Rome, they didn’t exactly slink in quietly—they stayed at one of Caesar’s properties, and he made no secret that the boy bore his name.   For the Roman elite, already uneasy about Caesar’s consolidation of power, this was the final straw. A foreign queen claiming her child was deeply connected to Rome? Unthinkable. In addition, it may have been during this visit that Caesar had a bust of Cleopatra dedicated at the temple of Venus…talk about an out-and-loud Valentine to his lover.   Of course, the smear campaigns practically wrote themselves. Cleopatra was painted as a scheming seductress, Caesar as an old fool bewitched by her “exotic” charms. But, little did the Roman population know Cleopatra was nobody’s fool. She was building a legacy, positioning Caesarion as a bridge between Egypt and Rome. It was the second act of her dynastic master plan and one that brought into the world three more heirs: Alexander Helios, his twin sister Cleopatra Selene, and little brother Ptolemy Philadelphus. These children weren’t just symbols of an influential union—they were Cleopatra’s insurance policy for Egypt’s sovereignty and a challenge to Rome’s dominance.   Antony, who already had Roman children, did not hesitate to double down on Cleopatra’s vision of dynastic rule. Not only did he proclaim Caesarion as Julius Caesar’s rightful heir, much to the irritation of Octavian, but he also brought his own son, Marcus Antonius Antyllus, to Egypt. Antony set up Antyllus and Caesarion as a two-man team: an Egyptian pharaoh and a Roman citizen, both born to inherit staggering power and smart enough to someday use it. While Caesarion represented the legacy of Egypt and Julius Caesar, Antyllus carried the weight of both the Antonian line and the patrician and dignified Fulvian line. Together, they were a calculated bet on a future where Rome and Egypt ruled side by side.   Antony did not stop there. At the infamous Donations of Alexandria, he handed out titles with grand theatricality. Caesarion was named “King of Kings” and hailed as the legitimate ruler of Egypt, while Alexander Helios, Cleopatra Selene, and Ptolemy Philadelphus were crowned rulers of their own swathes of Eastern territory. He spun the relationship of Antony and Cleopatra into a melodrama of foreign corruption, painting Cleopatra as the ultimate femme fatale and Antony as a man without proper Roman pride and laziness. When Octavian’s forces crushed them at the Battle of Actium, the dream of an Alexandrian empire came crashing down. Rather than endure the humiliation of a Roman triumph—effectively a death march masquerading as public entertainment—Antony and Cleopatra chose to die on their own terms. Their suicides were acts of defiance, denying Octavian the spectacle he craved. The twosome’s children, however, were not so fortunate.   As for Antony and Cleopatra, their tomb has yet to be discovered—a final act of rebellion, a middle finger to Octavian’s efforts to control their story. Somewhere, beneath Egyptian sands or lost to the sea, they rest together, their love and ambitions forever mystifying those who wanted to make them fallible and human. The fate of Cleopatra’s sons, heirs to both Egyptian and Roman legacies, is a tragic testimony to the ruthlessness of political survival in the ancient world and Octavian’s driving motivation to consolidate power.   Of all the male heirs, Ptolemy XV Caesarion, son of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, posed the gravest threat to Octavian’s ambitions. Cleopatra had sent Caesarion to safety in India under the care of his Greek tutor, a desperate ploy to preserve the boy’s life. Whether the tutor’s betrayal or sheer miscalculation sealed the young pharaoh’s fate is unclear but Plutarch tells us that Caesarion was lured back to Alexandria and executed on Octavian’s orders. Some whispers from antiquity suggest that Caesarion may have evaded capture, but there is no evidence to support this hope. What we know is that the boy who bore the name of Caesar was inconveniently alive—and Octavian had no intention of sharing power with anyone who could stir Roman hearts by invoking Ceasar’s memory.   Caesarion was not the only male heir erased from history. Antony’s son Marcus Antonius Antyllus, brought to Egypt to train alongside Caesarion as part of a planned Egyptian-Roman alliance, met a similarly brutal end. After Antony’s defeat at Actium, Antyllus sought sanctuary at a shrine. We know Alexander, crowned as King of Armenia at the Donations of Alexandria, was displayed in Octavian’s triumphal march in golden chains alongside his twin sister, Cleopatra Selene. Yet, he disappears from the historical record shortly after, never mentioned as having reached adulthood. Ptolemy Philadelphus, the youngest, doesn’t even make it that far; he isn’t recorded as being part of the triumph at all, suggesting he may have died even earlier, a quiet casualty of Octavian’s systematic purge.   Why Octavian may have targeted the boys isn’t hard to surmise. These children embodied Cleopatra’s vision of a united dynasty that could rival Rome. They carried the blood of two of the ancient world’s most powerful families, and they were, quite literally, born to rule. Octavian, ever the pragmatist, knew he could not allow them to grow into men who might challenge his authority. Whether they were executed outright, poisoned, or left to perish in the shadows of captivity, their deaths served Octavian’s agenda of erasing all competition. We will probably never know for certain how these boys met their ends. We simply see them disappear from the historical record.   While the exact details of their fates may be lost, the intent is unmistakable. Unlike her brothers, she doesn’t quietly vanish from contemporary sources. Octavian understood the power of Cleopatra’s daughter not just as a political pawn, but as a symbol. So, instead of erasing her, he married her off in grand fashion, gifting her a hefty dowry and sending her to North Africa to rule alongside Juba II, newly minted king of Mauretania.   Juba and Selene were, by all accounts, an extraordinary power couple. Both carried the scars of Rome’s imperial expansion: Juba had been paraded in Caesar’s triumph as a child after his father’s defeat and subsequent suicide (sound familiar?), and Selene had been displayed in Octavian’s own triumph alongside her brothers. Perhaps this shared trauma drew them together, or perhaps they simply recognized one another as equals. They built a dazzling metropolis at Caesarea (modern-day Cherchell, Algeria), blending architectural styles and scholarly traditions from the three great cultures. Temples with Greek columns stood alongside Egyptian motifs, and Roman efficiency underscored the city’s infrastructure. Coins minted during their rule showed Juba and Selene, one on each side, presenting them as a united front, a king and queen not just of a territory, but of a shared vision.   The pair also had at least two children, a son, and a daughter, though their fates are somewhat unclear. Cleopatra Selene’s legacy didn’t stop there—centuries later, Zenobia, queen of Palmyra and a fierce rival to Rome, claimed descent from Selene and Juba. Whether or not this claim of inheritance was true, speaks volumes about the enduring power of Selene’s story.   For all the grandeur of their reign, Selene and Juba’s lives were undoubtedly shaped by the traumas of their youth. Both had been torn from their homes and made political pawns, but together, they turned those tragedies into precursors to triumphs. Cleopatra Selene might have been taken from Egypt, but in Mauretania, she created a kingdom that reflected her mother’s vision of uniting the best of the ancient world. In a way, Selene did not just rise above her circumstances—she rose to the status of a queen who honored her lineage while forging her own path.

Staff at the African Development Foundation, a USAID-affiliated federal agency, have returned to work after a D.C. judge overturned the Trump administration’s abolition of the agency — even as a new inspector general’s report blasted the agency for misleading Congress. A USAID inspector general’s report released Thursday lists Mathieu Zahiu as one of the agency’s current top employees, even though the IG told a D.C. judge last year that it had seized Zahui’s phone and found evidence that he took secret payments from a company to which he steered suspicious contracts. Early in the Trump administration, Zahiu told the White House that the agency would not recognize Trump’s appointment of Peter Marocco, who successfully disbanded USAID, as acting chairman of the African agency. Staff subsequently locked the doors to physically prevent DOGE auditors from entering. The Trump administration ultimately took control of the building with the assistance of U.S. Marshals and laid everyone off. But after an African company sued on the basis that all of its profits came from the U.S. agency, complaining that shutting down the agency would cause it irreparable harm, a D.C. judge granted an injunction temporarily invalidating Marocco’s moves. D.C.- and Africa-based staff and contractors were all immediately reinstated to their jobs and canceled grants were restored, despite the fact that a ban on new foreign grants remains in effect, significantly reducing the amount of work for them to do. Thursday’s IG report made that reversal all the more remarkable, finding that the agency had only raised a quarter of the money from African partners that it publicly took credit for, that nearly half of its grants had insufficient documentation, and that the agency did not conduct any “due diligence” before entering into financial agreements with African entities. The African Development Foundation is funded by about $50 million a year in taxpayer money, but it is supposed to leverage that with funds raised from African governments and other groups, giving them skin in the game. The agency never actually collected three-quarters of the money that it implied to Congress it had raised between 2022 and 2024, according to the IG probe. In its 2023 Annual Report, the African Development Foundation, or USADF, reported that “$45.6 million in leveraged partner funds was secured,” but in reality, it only received $9 million that year, the IG report said. “Similarly, in its FY 2024 Congressional Budget Justification, USADF reported that it anticipated leveraging more than $15 million in external funding that year. Yet, by the end of FY 2024, USADF had received just $2.5 million in partnership funding.” In all, records showed that “32 partners pledged up to $69 million between FYs 2022 and 2024. However, of these pledges, USADF only received $17 million,” the IG found. African governments only actually “provided about $8.2 million of $41 million (20 percent) pledged.” The agency told the IG that it had no mechanism to force African governments and other groups to follow through on their commitments. The IG said this was because it drafted agreements that “were not legally binding,” and “did not conduct any pre-award assessments or due diligence on prospective partners.” For some partnerships, it had no documentation at all, the report found: “Based on our reviews of USADF’s website, partner funding receipts, and other public reporting, we determined that USADF may have had up to 17 additional active partnerships. For example, USADF’s website identified a payment card company foundation, a clean energy investment company, and a development nonprofit as strategic partners. However, USADF could not provide MoUs or any other documentation to confirm the status of these partnerships.” A Daily Wire investigation previously reported that one such partnership was with Herbalife, a multi-level marketing scheme whose then-CEO sat on the government agency’s board. The partnership involved providing Africans with “product donations, and Herbalife Nutrition staff as global volunteers in their businesses,” marketing materials said. It came two months after Herbalife paid $122 million to the Department of Justice to settle charges that it violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The Daily Wire’s investigation also showed that the agency misled Congress and the public about how much money went to Africa as opposed to administrative costs by having African grantees and contractors re-route money back to D.C. The IG report said “we discovered that USADF officials knew of suspected misuse of Foundation funds and equipment purchased from Foundation grants but failed to report this information to OIG as required.” It said that the agency failed to keep track of where its money was going: Forty percent of grants had incomplete project development documentation and the same number lacked evidence that it had trained the grantee on keeping track of finances. The agency pays African “partners” to inspect grantees on the ground, but for most grants, the agency’s database was missing these site visit reports. Thursday’s inspector general report was limited to certain aspects of the agency’s business and its methodology was established last year, before the dramatic changes at the agency. But USAID OIG confirmed that its investigations into matters relating to the foundation are active and ongoing. That raises the prospect that although CFO Zahui was reinstated after being laid off, the back-and-forth might end in his being hauled out of the office in handcuffs. A November 2024 search warrant application unearthed by The Daily Wire laid bare a criminal probe involving the agency’s mysterious payments to Ganiam Ltd., a company owned by Zahui’s friend Maina Gakure. In February 2024, agents seized Zahui’s work phone and found “text messages showing at least eight instances of wire transfers or electronic payments from Gakure to Zahui’s Bank of America account, totaling over $10,000. These payments coincide with USADF’s awarding of sole-source contracts to Ganiam,” they wrote. As of now, Zahui has not been charged with a crime. The agency’s other top current employee, according to the report, is Elisabeth Feleke. Feleke was accused by former general counsel Mateo Dunne of ordering him to stop an investigation into rulebreaking at the agency. Dunne filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging retaliation and anti-white racial discrimination, but an EEO judge dismissed it, and he is appealing. A former official with the USAID inspector general’s official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Daily Wire that the African Development Foundation “treated federal dollars like Monopoly money… it was a culture of reckless indifference to accountability and oversight.” Included in the report is an acknowledgment of the IG’s findings by the foundation. “USADF appreciates the work of the USAID Office of Inspector General in conducting this evaluation of our strategic partnerships and grants administration,” says a management response to the findings. “We concur with the overall findings and recommendations and acknowledge the opportunities to strengthen our internal policies, procedures, and reporting practices.” Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch (R-ID) said on X that the new report provides further evidence that the agency “is beyond repair” and should be abolished. She ended up engaged to 6-foot-5, 250-pound Travis Kelce, a Super Bowl champ with a well-groomed mustache and a macho swagger.  In other words, after years of dating men typically referred to as artsy “soy boys,” Swift said yes to the quintessential jock. Swift may be an unapologetic lib, and Kelce may have shilled for Pfizer during the COVID pandemic, but this celebrity pairing actually bodes well for conservatives. Someone with her massive cultural influence over women is bound to start trends, and thanks to this latest development, old-school proposals and traditional marriage might be officially back in style. In 2023, during Swift’s Kansas City tour stop, he confessed on his “New Heights” podcast that he tried to give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it. When she didn’t get it, he joked about being “butt-hurt.” Swift later said she thought his attempt was “metal as hell.” The nation’s biggest pop star admitted that confidence and directness are attractive. In an age when men are told to be sensitive, to cry, to ask permission before winking at a woman or sending a DM, Kelce came in strong with a solid attempt without any creepy overture. That’s the difference between being a man who leads and a boy who cries about not getting his way. In so many ways, this isn’t just another celebrity love story. It’s a reminder of something our culture has tried to forget: women are biologically wired to be drawn to strength, confidence, and dominance. Women are naturally drawn to a strong jawline, a muscular build, and height as cues of sound genetic fitness. And even if Swift is on a different level in terms of fame and notoriety, so far, he hasn’t appeared phased by the newfound attention. The NFL star seems smitten, just like the rest of her fans.  Underneath all the glitz and glamour, this story is simple. Taylor Swift, the most successful female artist of her generation, chose strength. She chose a man who could protect, provide, and lead. Joe decided to try talking like his dad to see how long it takes Frank to notice. Haskins believes Sweden isn’t actually the first country to use artificial intelligence in governance; it is just the first to admit it. “I guarantee that American politicians are using it all the time,” he says, warning that “this is going to be a huge problem moving forward.”Glenn, who regularly uses artificial intelligence as a tool, says that Kristersson’s AI usage isn't necessarily a problem in and of itself.The real concern, he says, is “what comes next.”Glenn foresees a day when AI is valued above and trusted more than human intuition, intelligence, and experience. “That's when you've lost control,” he warns.“That's exactly right,” says Haskins, “and how do you argue against something's decision when that something is smarter than literally everybody in the room?”“And it’s learned how to lie,” adds Glenn.Haskins agrees, noting that current AI systems “lie all the time.” It’s not uncommon for users to report that various AI systems make up information, invent sources, and skew hard data.“It's feeding you what it thinks you want to hear,” says Glenn.While it’s true that human beings are also capable of lying and manipulation, artificial intelligence is a far greater threat because it can “manipulate huge parts of the population all at the same time,” says Haskins.Further, “[AI] doesn't necessarily have the same goals that a human would have.
