Wisconsin Driver Wonders‚ "What Hit My Car?"

Abby in Wisconsin called into Midnight in The Desert with Art Bell to tell of the time she hit an unidentified creature on the road between Minneapolis‚ MN‚ and Madison‚ WI.“I had a really weird experience about three months ago while driving home. I had to move my mom from Minneapolis to Madison (Wisconsin) and I was driving home on one of my trips‚ moving her stuff alone. It was about 1 AM and I was in the middle of nowhere. I wasn't in a town or anything and I was really tired because I had been driving all day and all of a sudden‚ out of the corner of my eye‚ I distinctly saw a person running out of the woods straight towards the side of my car. I was going about 65 and I thought okay‚ I've been driving too long and now I’m seeing things. All of a sudden 'SMACK' into the side of my car.I was terrified. It was pitch black out there‚ there was no traffic. There's nobody around and there's nothing near me. I was just in the middle of nowhere. This came out of the woods. It ran into the side of my car. My car was dented. It hit me so hard. Out of the corner of my eye – I was really tired so I don't know what it was I saw but I could have sworn it was on two legs and it was probably about 6 feet tall or taller. In the corner of my eye what I thought I saw was a man wearing a grey sweatshirt and a hood. (Art asked if she stopped her car) I was too scared. I was in the middle of nowhere. I didn't understand why someone would come out of the woods and run straight into my car when there's no traffic or anything. If they needed to cross the street‚ why would they wait until there was car coming? So I thought‚ I should call the police. Then I thought‚ what did I just see? What was that? What do I say to the police‚ that somebody darted out of the woods and ran into my car?So I drove home. I was probably about 30 or 40 minutes away and I was shaking‚ I was scared. I don’t know what had just happened to me. I got out to see if there was damage to my car. I thought about calling the police and I decided it had to be an animal because there was nothing around there. So the next day I looked in the papers and I looked through everything to see if there were any dead bodies in the road because that would have made the news and there wasn't – nothing. So I don't know if it was an animal or what it was. Another thing that was terrifying was that it was running very fast – very fast! That's why I thought it couldn't have been a person. I knew not to stop. I was going about 65. No blood. No hair. I checked for blood because I thought maybe I hit somebody. No blood but you can see the dent. It's on the driver's side of the car‚ that's where it smacked into me. You can definitely see the dent but it wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be. You can see it but it wasn't like serious damage to the car or anything.”Transcribed Source: Midnight in The Desert with Art Bell - September 3‚ 2015NOTE: Researcher Linda Godfrey‚ the guest‚ noted that she had received similar dogman-type reports in which something was observed on the side of the road‚ and the witnesses thought they were looking at somebody wearing a hoody only to realize‚ as they got closer‚ it was something else. Author Richard Bowes Passes Away At 79

On December 24‚ 2023‚ author Richard Bowes died at age 79. Bowes‚ whose novels and short stories often took place in alternate‚ sometimes magically infused versions of New York City‚ was a fixture of the city’s speculative literary scene‚ with his works earning eight Nebula nominations‚ two World Fantasy Awards for “If Angels Fight” (2008) and “Streetcar Dreams” (1997)—making him one of only five authors to win that award more than once—a Lambda Literary Award for Minions of the Moon (1999)‚ and the International Horror Guild Award for “There’s a Hole in the City‚” which he wrote in 2005 after witnessing the Twin Towers fall on September 11‚ 2001. Richard Dirrane Bowes was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 8‚ 1944. He moved to Manhattan in 1965 after taking classes at Hofstra University and lived in the city in the decades after. His first novel‚ Warchild‚ was published in 1986. He went on to publish several more novels‚ but is best known for his short stories‚ particularly “There’s a Hole in the City.” “Just heard Richard Bowes died on the 24th‚” horror author Paul Jessup wrote on Twitter. “Fucking hell. This is a hard one‚ we talked back and forth over the years‚ was a great guy. The whole genre landscape will never be the same now that he’s gone. To read him is to know him‚ so read this.” Jessup linked to “There’s a Hole in the City‚” which was also the subject of Bowes’ last Tweet on September 11‚ 2020. “19 years later I am still amazed at having watched the fall of the towers from an NYU building‚” he wrote. “This story I wrote about my experience a few years later I decided to digitize today.” You can hear the an audio version of “There’s a Hole in the City” here or read it here. Bowes had an impact on several other authors and was a trailblazer in writing speculative queer fiction. “Speculative fiction wasn’t always this queer‚” Sam J. Miller wrote on Twitter. “For a long time‚ there were only a handful of folks holding it down. Rick Bowes blazed his own trail‚ writing brilliant weird queer haunted tales his own way…” Speculative fiction wasn't always this queer. Miller³ (@sentencebender) December 27‚ 2023 Horror writer Paul Tremblay also commended Bowes on Twitter: “Very sorry to hear of the passing of Richard Bowes‚ who was a wonderful writer and person‚” he wrote. “My deepest condolences to his many‚ many friends.” “Hell of a writer‚ hell of a guy‚ Richard Bowes‚” wrote Jeff VanderMeer after the news of the author’s passing broke. “Always fun‚ always an adventure to meet. A devilish sense of humor and I loved the back and forth of jokes and laughter. RIP.” Writer and editor Scott Edelman‚ who interviewed Bowes on his podcast‚ had this to say about Bowes on Bluesky: “Heartbroken to learn of the death of Richard Bowes‚ brilliant both in person and on the page. If you’ve never had the privilege of meeting him‚ you can experience his wit and wisdom on an episode of Eating the Fantastic… which I’m going to do myself right now.” You can also read one of his novelettes‚ 2014’s Sleep Walking Now and Then‚ at the link here.

Backlist Bonanaza: 5 Underrated Young Adult Science Fiction Books

Every few months‚ a post goes around on social media of speculative fiction readers bemoaning that no books in [X] subgenre are being published. Those posts are almost always wrong‚ especially when it comes to young adult fiction. YA authors have been cranking out incredibly creative and diverse books for years. Although YA publishers don’t tend to publish much science fiction‚ what we do get tends to be weird‚ exciting‚ and fresh. So let’s kick off the new year with a list of five young adult science fiction books that are probably exactly what you didn’t even know you were looking for.   Mirage by Somaiya Daud (Mirage #1; Flatiron Books‚ 2018) Somaiya Daud’s debut takes space opera and layers it with Amazigh and Moroccan cultural influences. Amani is forced to become the decoy for Maram vak Mathis‚ the imperial princess of the brutal colonizers known as the Vathek. The more time she spends in the palace—especially with Maram’s handsome fiance Idris—the more driven she becomes to help the rebellion. An epic‚ fiercely anti-colonial science fiction novel.   Early Departures by Justin A. Reynolds (Katherine Tegen‚ 2020) Q and Jamal’s friendship ended two years ago after the death of Jamal’s parents‚ for which he blamed Q. After losing Q as well‚ Jamal is drowning in grief. Then a mysterious stranger offers him a second chance‚ to bring Q back to life‚ at least for a few weeks. This is a lovely story about forgiveness and love. There aren’t many young adult science fiction novels by Black authors that are also about Black boys‚ but this is one of my favorites.   We Light Up the Sky by Lilliam Rivera (Bloomsbury YA‚ 2021) Pedro‚ Luna‚ and Rafa‚ go to the same school in Los Angeles‚ but aren’t friends. But when an alien lands in their neighborhood and takes the form of Luna’s cousin Tasha who died of covid‚ the three teens become a trio. It’s up to them to warn everyone of the oncoming danger‚ but who will listen to three Latinx kids? It reminds me a lot of the movie Attack the Block with its hard reality‚ caustic young people‚ and biting social commentary. It’s also one of a few young adult novels to deal explicitly with the pandemic.   Aetherbound by EK Johnston (Dutton BYR‚ 2021) This is one of those novels I will never stop yelling about. I have thought about it at least once a week since it came out; it’s that moving. Pendt Harland escapes her abusive family and flees to a space station controlled by the Brannick twins. It’s on the quiet side for a space opera‚ but it’s full of heart and soul and it’s gloriously queer. (There aren’t many YA novels that feature a polyamorous relationship‚ and even fewer that are science fiction.) The story is sad yet hopeful. You have no idea how much I want a sequel.   Against the Stars by Christopher Hartland (Tiny Ghost Press‚ 2023) If you loved They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera‚ you should check this one out. In a not-too-distant future England live Seb and Elliot. Society is in upheaval over Glimpses‚ a new technology that allows a person to see 44 seconds of their future. Seb hates the technology and blames it for destroying his parents’ marriage. Elliot‚ meanwhile‚ tries it and sees himself in a romantic moment with Seb. Is it the tech that brings them together or can they choose their own fate?   Alex Brown is a Hugo-nominated and Ignyte award-winning critic who writes about speculative fiction‚ librarianship‚ and Black history. Find them on twitter (@QueenOfRats)‚ bluesky (@bookjockeyalex)‚ instagram (@bookjockeyalex)‚ and their blog (bookjockeyalex.com).

Game of Thrones Prequel Project Moves From Live-Action to Animation

The end of 2023 gave us another update from George R.R. Martin about the Game of Thrones spinoff projects he’s working on with HBO. And while progress still seems slow‚ it looks like one of the prequels in development has shifted from a live-action endeavor to an animated series. “We have moved Nine Voyages‚ our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake‚ over from live action to animation. A move I support fully‚” Martin wrote on his blog. He added‚ “Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive‚ what with half the show taking place at sea‚ and the necessity of creating a different port every week‚ from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well‚ on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there.  And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.” The Sea Snake (aka Corlys Velaryon) takes place in the years before we meet him in House of the Dragon (played by Steve Toussaint) as the husband of Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best). The titular nine voyages refer to the seafarer’s journeys to nine different parts of Westeros and the bloody adventures that happened along the way. Art by Jonathan Roberts. Copyright 2012 George R. R. Martin The project‚ which has gone by the titles 9 Voyages as well as The Sea Snake‚ joins two other undisclosed animated spinoffs in the works. “None of them have been greenlit yet‚” wrote Martin‚ “but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them.” Martin gave no update on the other live-action projects: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight‚ which has been greenlit for a series order; a Jon Snow spinoff‚ which HBO has yet to greenlight; and another project centered around King Aegon and his sister-wives. Martin also praised the Netflix animated series Blue Eye Samurai and recommends people watch it. “Even if you don’t normally watch animation‚ give it a try. It’s terrific‚” he wrote. “If you like my own stuff‚ I think you’ll love it.”

GMU Is Latest School Under Feds’ Scrutiny for Campus Antisemitism

George Mason University—located in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington‚ D.C.—has been added to a list of dozens of institutions of higher education under federal investigation for antisemitism on campus since the Hamas massacre in Israel occurred in early October.  The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights announced on Dec. 22 that it had added the Fairfax County‚ Virginia-based university to its list of institutions under Title VI for “shared ancestry investigations.”  The National Desk‚ a news outlet of Sinclair Inc.‚ first reported the probe late last week.  Neither the Education Department nor GMU immediately responded to requests for comment from The Daily Signal on Tuesday.  After the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel‚ the university investigated an incident in which a student was seen tearing down posters on campus of Israeli children kidnapped by Hamas as hostages. The university reportedly determined ripping the posters down violated the student code of conduct‚ but did not appear to be criminal.  A GMU spokesperson told The National Desk that “policies‚ procedures‚ and public statements are transparent and well-documented‚” adding‚ the university is “confident that the Department of Education’s review will confirm that George Mason University has acted well within the letter and spirit of laws and the First Amendment.” Also in December‚ the Education Department announced it was investigating the University of North Carolina‚ the University of Illinois‚ and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology‚ among other institutions‚ regarding antisemitic acts on campus.  Universities that were previously under investigation by the department include the University of Pennsylvania‚ Cornell University‚ Columbia University and Rutgers University. Native Land Whiners Should Match Words With Deeds

Over the last several years‚ an odd ritual known as a “land acknowledgment” has become the fashionable way to begin academic‚ arts‚ and other elite events. Like a woke version of the Pledge of Allegiance‚ these land acknowledgments involve the public recitation of a prepared script.   But rather than declaring loyalty to the United States‚ land acknowledgments emphasize the illegitimacy of this country by claiming that the land on which an institution is built rightfully belongs to groups of people who were present before the U.S. was founded.  Land acknowledgments make this general point in a very specific way by declaring that the actual land on which the event is taking place is the home of a certain Native American tribe or set of tribes. Progressive institutions have also placed these statements on their websites‚ saying that their organization is housed on land that is the rightful property of a preexisting group of people.  Talk is cheap. If the people spouting land acknowledgments actually mean it‚ they should be willing to transfer ownership.  To ensure that these woke proclamations are not merely symbolic and empty gestures‚ we have an immodest proposal: Public declarations that a parcel of land is the rightful property of someone else should be considered legally binding offers. Any descendant of the group asserted to be the true owner in a land acknowledgment should be able to demand the deed and have that demand enforced by a court.  For example‚ the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis states on its website that it “occupies the ancestral‚ traditional‚ and contemporary lands of the Osage Nation‚ Otoe-Missouria‚ Illinois Confederacy‚ Quapaw‚ Ho-Chunk‚ Miami and many other tribes.” The Missouri school continues by asserting that “sovereignty was never ceded” and that “in offering this land acknowledgment‚ we affirm and support tribal sovereignty.”  So be it. If Brown officials mean what they say‚ they should hand over possession of their school’s building and the land on which it stands to the legitimate heirs of those tribal nations.  Similarly‚ the University of Hawaii at Manoa argues that the entire state‚ including the university’s land‚ is “illegally occupied” because “her majesty Queen Lili‘uokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom and these territories under duress and protest to the United States.” If any descendant of Queen Lili‘uokalani appears‚ they should be able to right this wrong and end the university’s illegal occupation by regaining ownership of the campus.  It’s not just universities. Arts organizations frequently have land acknowledgments. The Art Institute of Chicago declares that it is “located on the traditional unceded homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe‚ Odawa‚ and Potawatomi Nations.” If it is unceded‚ then it still belongs to them‚ and they should get it back. We’ll let the Art Institute decide if it wants to first remove its priceless paintings before handing over the building.  We are certain that the last thing that people reciting land acknowledgments would want is to renege on their public offers. That would make them guilty of what Native Americans have been wrongly and hatefully accused of—”Indian giving.” To avoid this hateful language‚ we suggest that the legislation making land acknowledgments legally binding be called the “No Backsies Law.”  It is important that we improve public dialogue by imposing consequences for empty and thoughtless rhetoric. If people publicly make an offer‚ they should be expected to follow through. If we can succeed with the “No Backsies Law‚” next we can work on deporting to Canada everyone who swears they’ll move there if their preferred candidate loses. After that‚ we can reinstate Prohibition for everyone who declares that they’ll never drink again when suffering from a hangover.  Words should have meaning‚ even for the silly elites who run our universities and arts institutions.  This commentary originally was published by Fox News Have an opinion about this article? To sound off‚ please email letters@DailySignal.com‚ and we’ll consider publishing your edited remarks in our regular “We Hear You” feature. Remember to include the URL or headline of the article plus your name and town and/or state. The post Native Land Whiners Should Match Words With Deeds appeared first on The Daily Signal.
