Biden’s Only Gift For Trump Was The Inflation Crisis

President Donald Trump has spent this year unwrapping an economy handed to him by former President Joe Biden. Inside the box: inflation and sticker shock. From when Biden took office in January 2021 through the end of December 2024, consumer prices rose 21.2%. Even as inflation cools under President Trump, Americans are still living with the higher prices locked in during Biden’s term in office. With the exception of George Washington, every president’s tenure runs the risk of being defined by the lingering effects of their predecessor’s policies. That reality has put the Trump White House on the defensive. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has repeatedly pushed back against the notion that today’s economy belongs to Trump alone. She’s described Democrats as “the greatest con artists in history,” who are “trying to claim ownership of an issue that they created.” On offense, the press secretary says that by economic measures, things are actually looking up. “Every economic metric does in fact show that the economy is getting better and brighter than where it was under the previous administration,” Leavitt said. Shortly after that statement, November inflation came in at 2.7% and GDP growth surged to 4.3% — far exceeding expectations. While the economic playing field is never fully level, Joe Biden and Donald Trump occupy a rare position as the only presidents in modern U.S. history to both inherit the monetary effects of the other. President Joe Biden received an average inflation of 1.9% and an economy primed with two stimulus packages from President Trump. In March of 2020, Trump signed the CARES Act into law, a $2.2 trillion stimulus package that acted as a lifeline to shut-down businesses all over the country. The package was passed unanimously in the Senate and 388 to 5 in the House of Representatives — notably, the five representatives who voted against the bill were Republicans who were concerned about the cost and impacts to the federal deficit. In December of 2020, Trump signed a second relief package totaling $900 billion, which included another round of direct payments. Six Republican senators voted against the bill; no Democrats opposed it. The House passed the measure 359-53. The 53 who voted against the bill included 50 Republicans who broke with party leadership. The legislation was a compromise, with Republicans pushing for limited total spending, and Democrats demanding larger checks and extended unemployment benefits. One year later, Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan into law, more than double the size of Trump’s final stimulus package. The bill sent $1,400 checks to Americans in a bustling economy. Not a single Republican voted to pass the legislation. Economists later echoed the concern that all three of the stimulus packages inflated the economy. “Both Trump and Biden contributed to the fiscal stimulus that fed into the inflation,” said George Selgin, senior fellow at the Cato Institute. Biden had average inflation during his term of 4.9% while Trump had average inflation of 1.9%. Trump’s inflation reached a high of 2.5% during his first term while Biden’s reached a high of 9.1% in June 2022. Economist Peter Morici was blunt in his assessment of where blame should be issued. “It was irresponsible to do stimulus when the economy was well on its way to recovery. Blame is falling where it’s due. Biden does bear responsibility for the endurance of COVID inflation.” As inflation finally began to cool, credit shifted elsewhere. Many point to former Senator Joe Manchin for blocking additional spending that could have further fueled price increases. Left-wing MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough remarked, “You can just thank Joe Manchin if you’re glad that interest rates aren’t even higher,” referring to the interest rate hikes the Federal Reserve had to implement in an attempt to tame inflation. Billionaire entrepreneur and investor Sam Zell agreed, saying, “Unfortunately, we only had one senator who stepped up to the line when, in fact, everyone should have stepped up and recognized this was a disastrous policy.” Others issued credit to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Republican Senator John Kennedy said, “It seems to me that you and some of … your colleagues deserve some credit for that. … I’m not saying things are perfect, but I never imagined that our landing could be this soft.” The “soft landing” has continued into Trump’s second term with an average of 2.7% inflation so far. But lower inflation does not mean lower prices — and now, voters are left paying the bill. As Americans continue to confront elevated sticker prices, Republicans will be forced to defend seats in an economy still shaped by stimulus spending many warned against.

Karoline Leavitt Announces ‘Greatest Christmas Gift’ — Her Baby Girl

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that she is expecting a baby girl in May, calling the news “the greatest Christmas gift we could ever ask for.” “My husband and I are thrilled to grow our family and can’t wait to watch our son become a big brother. My heart is overflowing with gratitude to God for the blessing of motherhood, which I truly believe is the closest thing to heaven on earth.” Leavitt thanked both the president and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles for creating a pro-family work environment. “I am also extremely grateful to President Trump and our Chief of Staff Susie Wiles for their support, and for fostering a pro-family environment in the White House.”   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by KAROLINE LEAVITT (@karolineleavitt) Leavitt has previously praised the White House’s “family-friendly environment” during an interview with The Daily Wire, saying it’s “a testament to the president and the chief of staff as well.” Other working mothers have also commented on the Trump administration’s support. “They are so incredibly understanding about mothers’ schedules, making it home on time for family time,” Joanna Wischer, deputy director of the Made in America office in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and mother to a one-year-old, told The Daily Wire. “The culture of the Trump administration is to make it so that we get as much done as possible in a reasonable timeframe and then be able to balance life with being able to see our kids, spend time with the family.” Leavitt has also stressed that her family support system helps her while she serves as a mother and press secretary. “I’m very blessed with a great support system,” Leavitt told The Daily Wire. “A wonderful husband who is an amazing father to our son, great parents who come to D.C. often to help when we need it. And my faith really keeps me grounded in giving me the strength to do both jobs, very important jobs, at the same time.” A senior White House official reported that Leavitt will continue to serve as President Trump’s press secretary — a role she previously served on the campaign trail while pregnant with her firstborn. Four days after delivering her son, Leavitt was back to doing media hits. The press secretary told The Daily Wire that her original plan when her son was born was to take some time off, as Wiles advised. However, witnessing the shocking assassination attempt on President Trump while holding her newborn son, Leavitt told her husband that it was time to go “back to work.” “I felt compelled to be present in this historic moment. The president literally put his life on the line to win this election. The least I could do is get back to work quickly,” Leavitt stated. Many conservative influencers have rushed to congratulate Leavitt. “Going to tell my kids you are Super Woman. Congratulations!” said Savannah Antao. Popular X account MAGA Voice stated, “Breaking Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt just announced she is Pregnant. Congratulations. MAGA is growing.” Leavitt is the first pregnant White House press secretary in U.S. history.

Best Of 2025: The Assassination Of Charlie Kirk And The Fight For America’s Soul

Editor’s note: This week, we’re reprinting some of our best stories from the past year. In this piece, originally published in September, Daily Wire editor emeritus Ben Shapiro remembers Charlie Kirk. *** “Hi, Mr. Shapiro, I’m Charlie Kirk.” Charlie was 18 years old when I met him at an event at The Breakers, the rather ritzy Palm Beach hotel that served as the gathering spot for the annual David Horowitz Freedom Center donor weekend. Charlie had just started an organization, and he was pitching me on it, an organization called Turning Point USA. I’d never heard of it, of course: He had just graduated high school, and the group had its seed donors but was still in its infancy. Charlie was eager, and he was aggressive, and he was whip-smart. His energy was almost exhausting. When he walked away, I turned to my friend Jeremy Boreing and said, “That kid is going to be the head of the Republican National Committee one day.” I was wrong. Charlie became far more important than that. Charlie’s Turning Point USA became the single most important conservative political organization in the country. And it grew because Charlie grew. He turned himself into an excellent public speaker and a talented debater. He could fundraise better than anyone in the game. He was friendly and gregarious to everyone. His drive was unmatched, because he cared about his fundamental values. The clips of Charlie on campus — the firebrand Charlie — make for great watching, but they don’t do him full justice. Behind the scenes, Charlie was deeply thoughtful, constantly seeking ways to build and grow coalitions. That’s a messy business, and it comes with aches and pains. No one did it better. That’s how a guy who never went to college ended up as a confidant of the President of the United States, the vice president, and pretty much everyone else on the right side of the aisle. Charlie never stopped moving. He never stopped talking and negotiating and debating and working. That infectious energy never left him. Until a killer’s bullet ripped his life from him. And there are no more words. There can be no more words. It’s impossible to process what it means when a 31-year-old man is murdered. A husband. A father of two young children. Assassinated, it would appear, for the crime of passionately speaking the truth, debating politics and discussing ideas, and working to make the country a better place as he saw it. But here’s one thing we do know: This all has to stop. It’s an ugly picture that we’ve seen before. The 1960s and 1970s were a time of tremendous change in American history, and of tremendous violence. Political assassinations became commonplace; bombings and terror attacks were excused by a variety of supposedly great intellectuals. And eventually, America rejected all of it. Now, we’re watching the same ugly picture reappear. A wave of violence is building, from the assassination of Charlie Kirk to the attempted shooting of President Trump, from the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson to the slaying of two Israeli embassy staffers. All of these acts of extreme violence have found support in the dark precincts of political radicals. The temperature in our country has steadily been rising. And it’s been rising because many people have determined that their political opponents aren’t just opponents, but enemies, threats to their very existence. That determination by fringe actors is often reinforced in the online spaces that prize virality and mirror emotional excess. And then, it breaks free from the world of the online, into real life, with bloody and horrific consequences. Yes, that phenomenon crosses the political aisle. But to pretend that the phenomenon is distributed equally would be a mistake. The rising tide of violence on the left has become more and more virulent over the course of the last several years. The argument that speech is violence, to be met with violence; the argument that opposition to contention amounts to a form of “genocide” or “erasure”; the argument that political opponents are moments away from ending our republic outright. These views all trend toward revolutionary violence. And the wave of violence, a wave already breaking on the shoreline, appears as though it is only the beginning. It has already destroyed Charlie Kirk’s family and ended his life at the age of 31. But it feels as though a tsunami is coming. The water has already receded from the shoreline. And what comes next could be far more devastating even than what we have seen thus far. That tsunami, if left unchecked, will wash away this entire republic. I’ve spoken at dozens of college campuses; I’ve required heavy security at many of them. My security has instructed me to wear bulletproof vests, insisted on metal detectors, told me to leave venues they considered nonsecure. And yet I’ve never truly felt unsafe, because to do so would be to accept—even consider—the idea that an American would truly harm someone simply for speaking freely in the United States of America. I don’t believe that anymore. I’m not sure who does. So, what can be done? It’s frequently said by those of politically liberal persuasion that thoughts and prayers aren’t enough. That action is necessary. But here is the truth: We need more thoughts and prayers. Thoughts for our political opponents: recognition that while we disagree, they are our fellow Americans; understanding that the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States can hold only if we treat each other as friends, not enemies; realization of the fact that speech is not violence, and that we must, as Americans, speak with each other. The way Charlie did. And we need prayers: prayers for our country, which is torn apart, under attack from within and without; prayers for our own souls, that we hold ourselves accountable for the way we treat others. Our America is a robust place of discussion and debate, of liberty and rights. But all of that must be undergirded by basic virtue. Basic decency. Respect for others. And yes, reverence for the uniqueness of an America that values speech and deplores violence. Charlie had that reverence. And for that, he was murdered. May his memory be a blessing—for us, and for our bleeding nation.
