Drake Gets Called Out For Doing Houston Walkout With Morgan Wallen… Did Everyone Forget About The Music Video?
Morgan Wallen still livin’ rent free in that head of yours, eh?
There’s certain narratives in the country music world that just kind of stick. Regardless of context, accuracy, or this little inconvenience known as the truth… for whatever ignorant reasons, fans won’t let it go. Of course they always have to do with some kind of political leaning or off-the-stage issue, never the actual music, and operating Whiskey Riff for the past 10 years plus, I see a zillion comments a day, and there are some that just come like clockwork. One that immediately comes to mind is Eric Church being “anti-Second Amendment.” The second we post anything about Eric Church… new single, new album, building homes for hurricane victims, doesn’t matter… we inevitably get a handful of comments that fall somewhere along the lines of “he’s anti-gun, he’s anti-Second Amendment, he’s a woke gun grabber, etc…”
And of course, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Eric Church is a gun owner, avid hunter, and self-proclaimed “Second Amendment guy,” but following the tragic events of Route 91 Harvest Festival in 2017, where Eric headlined 2 days before a mad man murdered over 50 people, Eric questioned whether or not it was right for lobbyists to have so much control over government policy.
In a conversation with Rolling Stone, he said
“I’m a Second-Amendment guy. That’s in the Constitution, it’s people’s right, and I don’t believe it’s negotiable.”
Ok, let’s just stop right there…. that statement alone should negate “anti-Second Amendment” accusations. Yet, it doesn’t…
Eric continued:
“But nobody should have that many guns and that much ammunition and we don’t know about it. Nobody should have 21 AKs and 10,000 rounds of ammunition and we don’t know who they are. Something’s gotta be done so that a person can’t have an armory and pin down a Las Vegas SWAT team for six minutes.
There are some things we can’t stop. Like the disgruntled kid who takes his dad’s shotgun and walks into a high school. But we could have stopped the guy in Vegas. I blame the lobbyists. And the biggest in the gun world is the NRA. I’m a Second Amendment guy, but I feel like they’ve been a bit of a roadblock. I don’t care who you are – you shouldn’t have that kind of power over elected officials. To me it’s cut-and-dried… at this point in time, if I was an NRA member, I would think I had more of a problem than the solution.”
Fairly reasonable take, especially in the wake of the worst mass shooting in history. And you could (and should) make the same argument for any lobby… should pharmaceutical companies be influencing policy when it comes to our health? Hell no. Should Big Tech be funneling money into Washington DC in exchange for less oversight? Hell no. Truth is, the gun lobby is quite small compared to Healthcare, Big Oil, Big Tech, Insurance, etc… but due to the nature of what’s at stake, it’s one of the most polarizing. Gun ownership is also an industry that directly affects everyday people, AKA voters, whereas most of us are going to the ballot box worried about the regulation of Artificial Intelligence… but make no mistake, Silicon Valley is spending hundreds of millions on it.
But all that is really a conversation for another time and place… the point is that no matter what Eric Church does, no matter how clear he is on gun ownership being a non-negotiable right, he’ll never shake the “anti-Second Amendment” label with some fans. And to be fair, the media is to blame for a lot of it, who conveniently spin stories and headlines to fit their own narratives. Of course, the biggest and most prevalent example, stretching beyond the realm of country music and into pop culture is the never-ending narrative that Morgan Wallen is a racist.
Anytime Morgan Wallen’s name is mentioned, whether it’s for an awards show, an SNL performance, golfing with Tom Brady, donating to charity (which he does quite often), releasing new music… doesn’t matter… as soon as his name is in the headlines there is a wave of people rushing to slap the label on him, and condemn whoever chose to appear alongside the “problematic” country star.
Tate McRae got blasted for collaborating with him, Shaboozey got called out for wanting to hit the town with him in Las Vegas, Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward came under fire for saying that he likes his music, Miranda Lambert got hate for writing with him and opening for him, and then look at the countless amount of rappers who have collaborated with him… Post Malone, BigXthaPlug, Moneybagg Yo, Lil Durk, all got hate for it.
And the latest is Drake.
The Canadian rapper appeared in Houston, alongside former Astros pitcher and MLB legend, Roger Clemens, for the walkout on the second night of Morgan Wallen’s I’m The Problem Tour, and was immediately met with thunderous applause:

But over on X, Drake was met with unbridled accusations of collaborating with a racist.
Drake and Morgan Wallen are label mates, sure, but Drake’s too smart to not know the message this sends. And if it was a blind spot, that’s what a team is for: to catch what you might miss. Unless no one around you feels comfortable speaking up… https://t.co/XitEcDewEq

And it goes on and on and on like that… and look, nobody condones what Morgan Wallen said years ago. Morgan is a known hip hop fan, and called his white friend the n-word (not a hard “r”), and immediately apologized for it, had no excuse, learned from it, and actually gave a lot of money to black charities. A number of black country artists like Darius Rucker, Kane Brown and Jimmie Allen came to his defense, arguing that Morgan is not racist, but agreeing that he did make a mistake by using that word… they also noted the importance of “consequences,” and using this as a learning opportunity. And then a number of rappers have since gone on to collaborate with him, and support him, with Lil Durk explicitly saying “he ain’t a racist, he’s my boy.” And aside from Drake, a number of black athletes have walked out with Morgan, even Texans legend Andre Johnson the night before.
But here’s the real kicker regarding Drake… Morgan Wallen was in his music video almost TWO years ago. Does nobody remember that, or do we just like to pretend to be outraged?
Morgan Wallen appeared in the music video for Drake’s song “You Broke My Heart,” which was featured on his 2023 For All The Dogs album, and was the last track on the For All the Dogs Scary Hours edition. At the time it was pretty random, and I’m sure Drake got a ton of hate for it at the time too, but are all these Drake fans (or Kendrick Lamar fans most likely) gonna act like this is breaking news… c’mon. The internet loves to take every opportunity they can to pile on Morgan Wallen, and yet, he continues to be one of the most successful artists in all of music right now. Safe to say… it’s not working. In the words of 50 Cent, “let ’em hate then watch the money pile up.”
Making The Music Video
The story behind the music video isn’t exactly what you’d think… there wasn’t months of planning that went into it, or long conversations about details, and it all happened within the span of 24 hours from Morgan being asked to do it to the video being filmed.
Morgan’s manager at the time, Troy “Tracker” Johnson, appeared on photographer Spidey Smith’s (who has shot all of Morgan’s album covers) In The Trenches podcast this week, where he detailed the story, starting with how he got a text from Tracy Martin, President of The Core Entertainment, saying Drake’s team was trying to get ahold of him.
Finally, after lots of phone tag, they told Tracker they wanted Morgan to fly up to Toronto the next day, and Morgan, who is a fan himself, was obviously excited to get Tracker’s text:
“Morgan calls me and I’m like, ‘Man, I don’t know. This is what I got for you. Drake would like to fly us out,’ and he’s like, ‘What do you think we should do?’ and I was like, ‘I think the answer is, ‘Yeah. What time? What time do we need to be awake and at the airport?’ I think this is an opportunity you cannot pass up.
Then his manager texts me a few more details. I connected someone with Cody, who was Morgan’s right hand, and that conversation started. Even the next morning we wake up and we’re not 100% sure what we’re doing.”
They pretty much only knew that Morgan was going to be in a video, and when they arrived at the airport in Toronto, they still didn’t even know where the location for the video was. Someone sent them a pin on the map that appeared to be in the middle of a field:
“We pull up and it’s just this gated, really dark road, and we start driving, and at this point we’re also going, ‘Okay, now we’re back to being murdered. I don’t know what’s going on!’ Then we pull around this corner, and it’s a full-blown movie set.
You know that little town square in Universal Studios where everyone shoots? It looked like that. There was a town square, and there were restaurants and there were all these things – all fake.”
They finally get in and get to Morgan’s trailer, and Drake stopped by to meet Morgan and chat for a little bit:
“We pull up and they’re just like, ‘Mr. Wallen, there’s your trailer,’ and we go sit in this trailer. The door opens up, and I’m walking out, and Drake is walking in. There are a lot of people I’ve met in my life, but there are people like Drake that might throw you back a little bit.
The door opens, he looks up at me and goes, ‘Hey, what’s up, man?’ I was like, ‘Oh, hello, Mr. Drake.’ He walks in and hangs out with Morgan for 15, 20 minutes, and then walks off. It was such a cool moment. We’d finally gotten to the point – we’re there, they have talked, he is real, it is real, everything is real.”
Morgan finally got some sort of script for his part too, and Tracker says Morgan and Drake hit it off very quickly, and had a great time doing the video together.
I would’ve never known this came together in 24 hours… if you haven’t seen the video before, you can watch it here:
