Eddie Van Halen’s son tells how his father dealt with anxiety
The mastermind behind Mammoth, Wolfgang Van Halen, son of the late legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen, revealed in an interview with Drumeo that although his father was talented and experienced, he struggled with anxiety, especially before each show.
According to him, that's why Eddie used to drink before the shows, to relax. His father sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 65, after years battling cancer.

"No, it literally just happened (Me joining Van Halen). Dad was newly sober. I mean, the reason he really drank the most was because of his anxiety. Yeah, Eddie Van Halen was (anxious). He got very anxious before shows, and that's why he drank. And, I think, having me there really centered him. Like, he would even say, 'F**k, if my 15-year-old-son could f**king do it, then what's wrong with me?'"
"We just started jamming out of nowhere. I made a playlist of all kinds of tunes, and I went home and learned them, and then we just started jamming. I put both Hagar- and Roth-era stuff on there. And I remember when we finally got Dave in, we showed him the list of the songs we've been practicing. He picks [it] up and goes, 'What's 'Get Up?' And Iwas like, 'Oh, f**k! Don't look at that list!' [laughs]"
"The first song we played was 'On Fire'. I remember that, which is partly why I wanted to play that at the Hawkins tribute. It's so left field. That was really for, like, the die-hard Van Halen fans, which I knew Taylor was, so it just felt right," Wolfgang Van Halen said (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar).
Wolfgang formed his band Mammoth back in 2015 and the name is a reference to an early band formed by his father Eddie and uncle Alex before Van Halen. Since then he released two studio albums: “Mammoth WVH” (2021) and “Mammoth II” (2023). All the songs from both albums were written by him and he also recorded all the instruments.
From 2006 until their final 2015 show, Wolgang was Van Halen's bass player. He was also part of the album they released during this era: "A Different Kind of Truth" (2012).
