Chris Murphy Dodged Question About Graham Platner’s Nazi Tattoo. He Was Mad About Elon’s ‘Nazi Salute.’

During a Sunday appearance on CNN’s State of the Union with Jake Tapper, Democrat Senator Chris Murphy pivoted when asked about Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner’s Nazi tattoo. “I do want to ask you about the Maine Senate race, because earlier this month, you called Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner ‘impressive,’ but since then, obviously a lot about him has come out, including the fact that he had a Totenkopf, which is a skull head — it’s the Nazi emblem for the SS — he had one of those tattooed on his chest,” Tapper stated. “He’s denied that he knew what the tattoo meant until recently, but CNN did find several times he discussed the Totenkopf emblem in recent years and months. Do you still think Platner is impressive?” Murphy acknowledged the reporting from CNN, then quickly pivoted to discussing Platner’s military service and calling him “a human being who made mistakes.” “But I’ve also listened to him talk about, I mean, the difficult time that he went through in his life. And frankly, it’s not unfamiliar to a lot of soldiers who came back from service and had a very difficult time readjusting. So he sounds like a human being to me, a human being who made mistakes, recognizes them, and is very open about it,” Murphy said. Sen. Chris Murphy says he is “interested to hear from” Graham Platner amid controversy over his Nazi-linked tattoo but says Platner sounds like a “human being who made mistakes, recognizes them, and is very open about it.” pic.twitter.com/qVldjzMDM8 — State of the Union (@CNNSOTU) October 26, 2025 Murphy wasn’t so sanguine about alleged Nazi symbolism just a few months ago when Elon Musk was accused of performing a “Nazi salute” at the presidential inauguration. Join us now during our exclusive Deal of the Decade. Get everything for $7 a month. Not as fans. As fighters. Go to DailyWire.com/Subscribe to join now. After the gesture went viral, multiple high-profile individuals came to Musk’s defense, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Even the left-wing Anti-Defamation League released a statement in defense of Musk, saying the Tesla founder “made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.” But Murphy was apparently deeply concerned, pressing Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) about the incident in a January Senate hearing. “I think antisemitism work is best when we call out what is happening on both sides of the aisle,” Murphy asked. “What do you think of Elon Musk, perhaps the president’s most visible advisor, doing two ‘Heil Hitler’ salutes last night at the President’s televised rally?” “No, Elon Musk did not do those salutes … that is simply not the case, and to say so is – the American people are smart. They see through it. They support Elon Musk,” Stefanik replied. Murphy pressed further still, citing several antisemitic X personalities who claimed what Musk did was a sign.

Buttigieg Praises Socialist NYC Mayoral Candidate Mamdani, Slams Cuomo Over Past Scandals

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg praised New York City socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and attacked independent mayoral candidate and former New York Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a recent CNN interview.  Buttigieg lauded Mamdani for already taking “steps that are not just about winning but about trying to bring people together.” “I don’t live in New York, but I think he has the capacity to be a great mayor,” Buttigieg said.  The potential 2028 Democrat presidential contender went on to criticize Cuomo over his sexual harassment allegations and COVID-era nursing home scandal, saying he “disqualified himself in so many ways, including morally.”  Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi went after Buttigieg’s comments in the New York Post, calling them hypocritical.  “He doesn’t have a vote in this race, and one would think he’d have a moral problem with a New York City with a diminished police force, a decriminalized sex trade, no jails, and a weakened education system that encourages mediocrity—and that’s exactly what Zohran Mamdani is running on,” Azzopardi said. Buttigieg’s praise comes after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed Mamdani on Friday, making him “the most senior-ranking national Democrat figure to support the self-described socialist’s bid for Gracie Mansion,” according to The Daily Signal’s George Caldwell. How to Choose a Safe Dog Collar Safety Strap

How to Choose a Safe Dog Collar Safety Strap

Dog collar safety straps protect your pet from accidents, injuries, and getting lost during walks. The wrong collar can cause choking, neck damage, or allow your dog to slip away in dangerous situations. We at DogingtonPost have researched the most important safety features that every dog owner needs to know. This guide covers breakaway mechanisms, proper sizing, and emergency features that could save your dog’s life. What Safety Features Matter Most Breakaway Mechanisms That Save Lives Breakaway mechanisms save dogs from strangulation when collars catch on fences, furniture, or other dogs. Studies show that collar entanglement requires careful consideration when choosing restraint devices for dogs. Quick-release buckles open automatically under 15-20 pounds of pressure, while side-release buckles require manual operation but offer stronger security during walks. Dogs over 50 pounds need non-breakaway collars with traditional buckles since breakaway mechanisms fail under their force. Visibility Features That Prevent Accidents Reflective strips enhance dog visibility and safety during nighttime walks, providing peace of mind for pet owners. Choose collars with 360-degree reflective stitching rather than small patches for maximum protection. LED collar lights provide superior visibility but require battery replacement every 3-4 weeks (making them less convenient for daily use). Neon colors like orange and yellow work best during daylight hours, with orange being 40% more visible than traditional colors to drivers. Perfect Fit Measurements Measure your dog’s neck with a soft tape measure, then add 2 inches for proper collar size. The two-finger rule works for most dogs – you should fit two fingers snugly between the collar and neck. Adjustable collars accommodate weight changes and seasonal coat thickness. Check collar fit weekly for puppies and monthly for adult dogs (since growth patterns vary significantly). Loose collars allow escape, while tight collars cause breathing problems and skin irritation. Material quality and hardware strength determine how well these safety features perform under real-world conditions. What Materials and Hardware Keep Dogs Safest Material Testing Standards That Matter Nylon webbing stands as the safest collar material, with tensile strength testing following ASTM D5034 standards for premium grades. Biothane delivers superior weather resistance and maintains flexibility staying at comfortable temperatures all day long without getting hot in sun or cold in rain. Leather collars need monthly care to prevent cracks and lose 60% of their strength when wet. Fabric collars with decorative stitches create weak spots where thread fails under stress (avoid these designs entirely). Hardware That Won’t Fail Under Pressure Stainless steel hardware resists corrosion and maintains strength ratings above 1,200 pounds, while zinc-plated hardware starts to corrode within 6 months of regular use. D-rings that manufacturers weld rather than cast provide 300% stronger attachment points for leashes and safety straps. Quick-release buckles from YKK or Duraflex meet military specifications and function reliably after 10,000 open-close cycles. Test buckle operation monthly since salt exposure and dirt cause 40% of buckle failures in coastal areas. Size-Specific Safety Requirements Puppies under 6 months need breakaway collars since their necks grow rapidly and standard collars become dangerous within weeks. Small dogs under 25 pounds require 3/8-inch collar width to prevent tracheal damage, while dogs over 75 pounds need minimum 1-inch width for proper force distribution. Senior dogs with arthritis benefit from padded collars that reduce pressure on sensitive neck areas. Giant breeds like Great Danes require reinforced stitches rated for 5,000+ pound loads since their pull force exceeds standard collar specifications. These material and hardware foundations support the advanced safety features that provide emergency protection and location tracking for your dog. What Advanced Safety Features Protect Your Dog Best Emergency Contact Systems That Work Engravable ID tags with laser etching last 10+ years without fading, while stamped tags become unreadable within 18 months of regular wear. Include your cell phone number, backup contact, and medical conditions like seizures or deafness on the tag. QR code tags from companies like PetHub store unlimited information and send GPS location when scanned, with PetHub’s digital pet ID tags helping return lost pets in under 24 hours. Slide-on tags prevent noise during walks and won’t fall off like standard tags that break 40% of the time according to shelter data. Anti-Choke Design Features That Save Lives Martingale collars tighten only to a preset limit, which prevents escape while it eliminates choking risk for dogs that back out of traditional collars. Front-clip harnesses reduce pull force by 60% compared to neck collars and distribute pressure across the chest instead of the trachea. Safety straps with dual attachment points connect both a backup flat collar and primary collar, which prevents complete collar failure during emergencies. Avoid choke chains entirely since choke collars put dogs at risk for damage to the esophagus or trachea. GPS Integration and Tracker Compatibility Modern safety straps include reinforced D-rings that support GPS trackers up to 2 ounces without affecting collar balance. Whistle GO Explore and Fi Series 3 trackers require minimum 3/4-inch collar width for secure mount and accurate location data. Choose collars with secondary attachment loops that manufacturers design specifically for tracker placement since standard leash rings create interference with GPS signals. Coupling straps allow simultaneous use of both training collars and GPS-compatible safety collars which gives you location data during off-leash sessions. Final Thoughts Every dog collar safety strap purchase should prioritize breakaway mechanisms for dogs under 50 pounds and non-breakaway designs for larger breeds. Stainless steel hardware with welded D-rings provides the reliability your dog needs during emergencies. Reflective materials with 360-degree coverage and laser-etched ID tags create multiple layers of protection. Red flags include decorative stitches that weaken collar integrity, zinc-plated hardware that corrodes quickly, and choke chains that damage your dog’s trachea. Fabric collars with small reflective patches fail to provide adequate visibility during nighttime walks. Any collar that requires frequent adjustments after initial fitting indicates poor design (and should be avoided entirely). Your dog’s safety depends on materials that withstand real-world conditions and proper attachment systems. Nylon webbing and Biothane offer proven durability, while GPS-compatible attachment points support modern tracking technology. Test buckle operation monthly and replace collars that show wear signs immediately. HASTA LA VISTA, TAPPER: Arnold SCHOOLS Jake on Redistricting

CNN’s Jake Tapper had on the seven-time Mr.Olympia and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to discuss partisan gerrymandering, among other topics, and got an earful when he tried to justify California’s gerrymandering referendum known as Prop 50. Tapper got a near-total recitation of Democrat partisan gerrymandering efforts in a way not normally seen on cable TV. Watch as Schwarzenegger cites several states where the GOP is shut out of the congressional delegation despite garnering at least 40% of the vote: HASTA LA VISTA, TAPPER: Arnold sets the record straight on partisan redistricting pic.twitter.com/SXL3R4bF46 — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 26, 2025 JAKE TAPPER: As you- as acknowledged, this all started because of redistricting in Texas. And this was Trump pushing Republican- controlled states to throw out their current congressional maps, so as to cook the books so that there is less -- it is less likely for Democrats to retake control of the House during the next-year midterms. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, no, Jake. TAPPER: I mean, is it fair to argue that -- do you believe that the Republican Party is starting this? SCHWARZENEGGER: Yes. No, Jake, there has been gerrymandering going on for 200 years. There is such extreme gerrymandering going on that, in a state like Massachusetts, that has like 40 percent of the people voting for Trump, they only had -they had have zero representatives. The Republican Party has zero representatives sent to the House. Think about that. In New Mexico, 45 percent of the people voted for Trump and vote Republican, and zero is sent to the House, zero representative from the Republican Party. So there's gerrymandering, crazy gerrymandering going on all over the country. And we wanted to try to stop it in California, and we did stop it in California and we went around the country. So I think this whole thing about finger-pointing and say they did it, so therefore we should -- doing it, that's not really the way to go, that one party should outperform the other party. It should be performance. And when it comes to midterm elections, as you know, always the party that is not in the White House usually wins by 20, 25, 30 seats. So what does five seats matter in the first place in Texas? It is crazy. We should outperform them. That is where the action is. Those Republican shutdowns are not usually cited in the legacy media when covering redistricting. Usually, the frame on redistricting begins from the recent Texas legislation which, to be clear, Schwarzenegger also denounces here. There is almost never any mention of the states cited above, or some of the other more egregious instances such as Illinois, and New York.  Of course, Schwarzenegger is the independent redistricting commission that he enacted as governor, and which has led to the highly partisan redistricting seen in California. But such nuance didn’t make into Tapper’s frame, which sought to lend credibility to the idea that California’s proposal is serious and somehow a solution to the problem of partisan gerrymandering. When it comes to the coverage of partisan redistricting we are reminded yet again that if it weren’t for double standards, there would be none at all. Click “expand” to view the full transcript of the aforementioned interview as aired on CNN State of the Union on Sunday, October 26th, 2025: JAKE TAPPER: And joining me now, someone who wants to terminate the redistricting effort in California, former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who we're catching up with at Gold's Gym in Venice, of course. Good to see you, sir. Thank you for working us into your -- your busy fitness schedule. A CBS poll this week found that 62 percent of likely California voters support this ballot measure that you oppose. Why do you think you're right and they're wrong? And what more are you going to do between now and Election Day to try to stop this from passing? ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, I'm not really the spokesperson for the anti- Proposition 50. I just want to defend the kind of work that I have done, because we worked so hard to get the independent redistricting commission in California. It was -- California was in the leadership on that issue. Then we went around the country, promoted it around the country and actually convinced 30-some percent of districts to go and have an independent commission. And now all of a sudden they're undoing all of that. There's this war going on all over the United States, who can outcheat the other one? Texas started it. They did something terribly wrong. And then, all of a sudden, California says, well, then we have to do something terribly wrong. And then now other states are jumping in. And now this is spreading like wildfire all over the country. And it saddens me to see it be going in the opposite direction, rather than having an independent commission draw the district lines. And so, Jake, I have to tell you that, when you think about this trying to outcheat each other, rather than outperform each other, it's all between Democrats and Republicans. And the ones that are getting left behind are the people. And when I think about this cheating that's going on, I said, wait a minute, yesterday, I saw on television basketball players getting arrested. coaches, famous coaches getting arrested, mafia getting arrested because they're cheating with the card games and with gambling and with all of those kind of things. So they're getting arrested, and, here, they're cheating and they're having a war on cheating here in America with this gerrymandering. So it's really sad. TAPPER: Democratic Governor Newsom was asked this week about your efforts to lobby against the measure. I want you to take a listen to what he said and then respond on the other side. GOV. GAVIN NEWSOM (D-CA): He's wrong. What we're doing is temporary. It's completely transparent and it's democratic. This is a revolution that's going on in real time in our country. We need to wake up. Prop 50 is foundational if we're going to save this republic. So I would say to those that are opposed to it, wake up to these new realities. Spare me the moral high ground. TAPPER: So, I know this, sir, but this is a prevalent view among Democratic voters and Democratic officials. They think Republicans are blowing up all norms and standards for behavior, and they feel, therefore, they have to take extraordinary action in response. Are their concerns invalid, do you think? SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, first of all, let me just say that it's important. This is not Governor Newsom against me or me against Governor Newsom. We are friends and we get along. And he came to me and told me about this situation. And we have been working on this without attacking each other and all of that. So, that's number one. Number two, I think, when he -- when they say this is temporary, there is no such thing. I mean, the longest programs are government programs that are temporary, OK?Just remember that, if it is a tax program or if it is a redistricting program, anything that is temporary with government is permanent. So, in the year 2032, when the independent redistricting commission is supposed to come back, they're going to say, wait a minute, there's still gerrymandering going on in Texas. There's still gerrymandering going on in Ohio. There's still gerrymandering going on in Florida. We have to continue the gerrymandering. This is what's going to happen. They will find an excuse. So, therefore, I don't think it is temporary. So that's total fantasy. So, the second thing is that you cannot cheat your way out of it. What they should do is, what the Democrats should do is, they should outperform Trump. To me, it's all about competition creates performance. And so what they do is, with the redistricting commission, is that they're going to go and try to draw the district lines in such a way that they get voted in no matter if they work well or not for the American people. So the American people get cheated on this whole thing. That is really the problem here. To me, I understand that the Democrats and Republicans have to fight about this. But the ones that are not really getting anything out of this is the people of America. I think that, if you want to really fight for democracy, why would you go and destroy the Constitution in California, tear it up, and go and redo it, do the whole thing? So, to me, it just doesn't make any sense at all, the whole thing. TAPPER: As you- as acknowledged, this all started because of redistricting in Texas. And this was Trump pushing Republican- controlled states to throw out their current congressional maps, so as to cook the books so that there is less -- it is less likely for Democrats to retake control of the House during the next-year midterms. SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, no, Jake. TAPPER: Let's talk about another issue you care passionately about. You met with Pope Leo earlier this month to discuss your efforts to combat the climate crisis. It's a top priority. But, realistically, I wonder, what do you tell people who believe that climate change is an existential threat? What should they do when the president of the United States falsely claims it's a hoax, actively works to undermine climate initiatives, not just by the Biden administration, but climate initiatives by your beloved state of California? What do you tell activists to do? SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, first of all, I was very excited that the Catholic Church is really that enthusiastic about becoming involved in a fight against pollution, terminating pollution. So this was number one. I was very excited to be there at the Vatican, to give the speech there, to work with the pope together, and to work with the Vatican together on this issue. Number two, my message has always been, don't go and focus on what the federal government is doing or what the president is doing or what the prime minister is doing. I said each community and each state has its own powers. When I was governor, we did the most extraordinary work here in California. Democrats and Republicans alike worked together. We passed the most tough environmental laws in the country. And we proved that you can have tough environmental laws, but, at the same time, have also the economy grow. Look at California now. It's the number one economy in the country, and we have the toughest environmental laws. So, you can do that. It was done on a local and on a statewide level, not on the federal level. As a matter of fact, the Bush administration hated all of our ideas that we did here. And we even fought in court and went all the way to the Supreme Court. And we won against the federal government, because they wanted to stop us from regulating our own air. So what my message is, is, let's not focus on what Trump says. Let's not focus on what the federal government says. Let's focus on, what can we do, what can each individual do? I mean, this is where the action is, people power, not government power, people power. The greatest things in the world were accomplished with people power, if it's the civil rights movement, if it is the anti-apartheid movement, if it is the suffrage movement, the independence movement in India. You go -- the list goes on and on and on. It's people power. And I want to encourage people and I want to pump them up. And I want to say, you do the work, rather than waiting for, what does Trump say today? Oh, my God, Trump is saying this and he thinks it's a hoax. No, no, no, that's not where the action is. The action is, what do you do?   TAPPER: One last question for you, sir. In just the last few weeks, we have seen a Democratic Senate candidate apologize for having a tattoo that he claims he wasn't aware had Nazi ties, but it's the Totenkopf from the S.S., the skull and crossbones. And then there's -- that's on the left. And then, on the right, a top White House aide still working for the administration had his nomination withdrawn after he wrote in a text chain that he had a Nazi streak. Politico reported on messages from Young Republicans joking about sending people to gas chambers, praising Hitler. The reason I bring this up is because you have spoken so movingly in the past about your father's membership in the Nazi Party, denouncing it. What is your message to anybody in politics today embracing or praising Nazis or Hitler in any way? SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, I don't know anything. I don't know the details about this one individual that says that he had this tattoo put on by mistake or he was drunk or something like that, and now he wants to erase it and he wants to cover it. I don't know enough about this case that -- to really comment on it. But I can just tell you one thing. Anyone that idolizes Nazis, it's bad news, because we have been there before and we have seen the outcome. There are no winners, OK? It's that simple. And I think that's not the direction we want to go. What we want to do is, we want to make sure that both of the parties, doesn't matter if you're Democrat or Republican, get together and start figuring out what is best for the people of America, because, while they are fighting over here about anti-Prop 50 and for Prop 50 and gerrymandering and not gerrymandering and all this stuff, they're trying to put the spotlight away from the actual issues. Because the actual issues is the debt problem. We have a $37 trillion debt, and no one is addressing it. We have a health care crisis in America. We have an immigration reform that we need in America. I mean, this is the kind of issues. You have to make it more affordable. And all of those kind of issues, they're avoiding it. In California, it's the same thing. The more they talk about Prop 50, the more they take the spotlight away that we have more homeless in California than any other state. As a matter of fact, we have one-quarter of all the homeless in America right here with 178,000 homeless. And the number goes up and up and up. They don't want to focus on that. You see what I'm saying? They don't want to focus there about affordability, that the affordability is so bad here that people have to move out of Los Angeles. They can't afford living here anymore because it takes $3,500 to rent an apartment here. And you cannot even afford a house or anything like this. That's why we have so many homeless, because, in the homes, they don't have the permitting process in place. So those are the kind of issues they should address, or that we have the highest energy prices in California, the highest gasoline prices in California. All of those kind of things need to be addressed. They don't want to talk about that. They want to go and focus on Prop 50. And it may win, Prop 50. I think the people that are falling short are the people themselves, and not the politicians. The politicians are going to celebrate because they finally won something, and then they're going to go and do it in another state, in another state, in another state. And it hurts the people. I am a guy that is not on the right and not on the left when it comes to that. I'm not a political hack. I'm a person that looks at, what is reality here and how do we make this country better? And this is not -- through gerrymandering is not the way we make this country better. We make it better by the parties outperforming each other. That's how we make them better. TAPPER: Former California Governor, actor, entrepreneur Arnold Schwarzenegger, it's been an honor, sir. Thank you so much. SCHWARZENEGGER: Thank you very much. Thank you. Have a good day.

Why Christians should stop running scared from Halloween

As October comes to a close, "spooky season" is in full form. Stores are packed with Halloween candy, costumes, and decorations. Some Christians reject Halloween as synonymous with evil. But why is that? And what is the best way for Christians to respond to Halloween?Make no mistake: Every day on the calendar belongs to God, and none of them belong to anyone else, including the devil. How it startedThe pagan Celts of ancient Ireland celebrated the new year on Nov. 1. So, much like we celebrate the night before New Year's Day, they celebrated the night before (Oct. 31), too. They called it "Samhain" — a night when they believed the dead in the form of ghosts could return to walk the earth. The Celts built huge bonfires, dressed in costumes to disguise themselves from the ghosts, and made lanterns out of gourds (like pumpkins, although they likely used different gourds). The fires attracted many insects, which attracted bats. When the influence of the Catholic church began extending into pagan lands, sometimes the two cultures influenced each other. The Catholics celebrated All Saints' Day on Nov. 1 — also known as "All Hallows Day" — which was an occasion to remember the dead, who are supposedly now in heaven. So Samhain eventually came to be known as "All Hallow's Eve" or Halloween. And the bats, ghosts, costumes, and jack-o-lanterns made of gourds — the trappings of Samhain — continued to be part of the celebration.Trick-or-treat origin storyIn medieval Britain, a practice called “souling” emerged, where the poor would go door-to-door on Nov. 1 or Nov. 2, offering prayers for the dead in exchange for food, often “soul cakes.”In Scotland and Ireland, a parallel tradition called “guising” developed in which children and young adults disguised themselves in costumes or masks, supposedly to mimic or hide from wandering spirits, and went door-to-door performing songs, poems, or tricks in exchange for food, nuts, or coins. The term “guising” comes from “disguise,” reflecting the costume element in modern trick-or-treating.How it’s goingHistory is important. But so is understanding what is happening now.In the U.S., Halloween is primarily about one thing: trick-or-treating. Kids love dressing up in costumes and getting free candy, which is why we start seeing Halloween candy displays about 10 minutes after school starts in the fall — if not earlier.Trick-or-treating is, of course, driven by commercial candy manufacturers, who make a significant portion of their profit from Halloween-related sales of their highly processed, terrible-for-everyone, garbage candy, which is full of dyes and additives (save us, MAHA!). That’s an “evil” we don’t hear enough about. But there are those who see evil in every Halloween nook and cranny. Those who proclaim it "Satan's day" and a peak time for witchcraft and other evil doings. This seems to be based in great part on alleged comments from satanists and witches that I see posted on social media every October — comments thanking Christians for allowing their children to worship Satan one day a year by trick-or-treating.That’s stupid. Why would we believe or listen to anything self-proclaimed devil worshippers say?Make no mistake: Every day on the calendar belongs to God, and none of them belong to anyone else, including the devil. I don't deny people could choose Oct. 31 in particular to celebrate evil. However, for the vast majority of Americans, Halloween is about strolling the neighborhood in costume and collecting candy. What should Christian families do?Our highest calling is to love God and love our neighbor. And Halloween brings those neighbors to our door, literally. What if we prayerfully and thoughtfully considered how we can bless those neighbors on Halloween with an eye toward building relationships?I'm not talking about handing out Christian tracts instead of candy. Don't be that person. But I am talking about eagerly seeking opportunities to connect with at least one if not more families in your neighborhood with whom you can begin to build relationships. This, in fact, is why God has you where you live.Let me tell you about what one family did for Halloween. They set up a pole tent in the driveway, hung lights from it, and under the tent placed their BBQ grill on which they cooked hot dogs. A table held buns and condiments, a bowl of Halloween candy, and jello shots for the adults. They publicized this on the neighborhood webpage a day or two before Halloween. To be clear, they weren't Christians seeking to love their neighbor. They were seeking to promote the father's business. But how might we promote our heavenly father's business similarly? Here are some ideas:If you have access to one, a pole tent in the driveway with lights strung on it is very welcoming on a dark night! Grilling hotdogs is a good idea. Another might be a big crock-pot filled with chili, with paper cups and plastic spoons for serving.A hot drink station with cocoa, cider, tea, etc.Fresh-made pumpkin bread or oatmeal cookies in little treat bags as an alternative to commercial candy.Set out lawn chairs and invite people to sit down and rest for a moment — and if they do, introduce yourselves and get to know their family.Let your kids dress up and pass out the goodies. If you also allow your kids to trick-or-treat, one of you can hold down the fort while the other takes the kids around the neighborhood.Let people know a day or two ahead that you welcome them to come by and "sit a spell," as the saying goes. This will cost you time, effort, and money. But it's a ministry investment in the lives of precious people God has placed in your neighborhood. You can't love them if you don't make an effort to know them, and you can't know them if you never even meet them. You could also just set out lawn chairs toward the end of the driveway where you will be able to actually see and converse with the adults as you pass out candy. Compliment the kids' costumes. Ask the adults where they live in the 'hood. They won't linger long without a reason to stop at your house, but at least you'll physically meet some of them.A few do's and don'ts, by way of suggestionDO wear a costume. Bible costumes are fun. So are a lot of others. Don't be anything that will scare children. Don't be a witch. Don't be the devil (duh).DON'T hand out Christian literature that talks about how evil Halloween is. In fact, don't hand out Christian literature. I heard someone say once that if you feel you absolutely must hand out some kind of Christian tract, you should be handing them out with full-size candy bars!DON'T make it all about your kids and their candy. Recruit them to be part of your family blessing the neighborhood, whatever you end up doing. If you think Halloween is evil, don't hunker down in your house with all the lights out. Unless you live somewhere with no trick-or-treaters, get out there and redeem it.Halloween is an opportunity for your family to bless others and begin forging relationships with lost people in need of Jesus, all by being a good neighbor. This article was adapted from an essay originally published on Diane Schrader's Substack, She Speaks Truth.
