Police and prosecutors are now investigating the incident. Prosecutor Veronika Edvinsson states that the preliminary investigation only now – several weeks later – was initiated and that the woman has been heard.
The suspected rapist no longer works in the business. However, he has not been detained.
Criticized handling – police report delayed
The case has received special attention due to the actions of the city of Malmö. It took since February 23, when the incident became known for the operation, until March 13 before a police report was made.
Meanwhile, the municipality conducted its own internal secret investigation. This is criticised by the prosecutor, who believes that the approach may have hampered the judicial process.
According to the prosecutor, it risks adversely affecting the investigation when a suspected person has already received information and respond to them before police interrogation has been held. In sexual crime cases, it is often crucial to be able to bring in stories without advance information.
The municipality's explanation is that they wanted to get the affected 80-year-old woman to participate in a police report herself. However, the reasoning receives criticism, as a formal report is required for victims to have access to the right support, such as plaintiffs' counsel.
Several similar cases – and a broader problem
The current case is not isolated. In Malmö, two high-profile cases have occurred in recent years.
In November 2023, a home employee was sentenced to prison for rape a woman with a disability. In January 2024, another accused of sexual assaulting a 94-year-old woman was convicted.
At the same time, reporting from different parts of the country shows that the phenomenon is widespread. The events have raised recurring criticism and questions about employment control, work procedures and the protection of particularly vulnerable elderly people.
SD calls for action
The incident has had political consequences. Lisbeth P Ekström is the group leader of the Sweden Democrats in the Health, Health and Social Care Board in Malmö and she sharply criticizes the municipality's handling and requires changes.
"The result of the municipal government's scandalous handling of this kind of abhorrent crime gives Malmö resident scars for life," says Persson Ekström.
The party believes that any suspected crime in which home care personnel may be perpetrators should be reported to the police immediately. At the same time, the importance of victims receiving support in the process is stressed.

“We Sweden Democrats believe that the City of Malmö should never help to complicate the work of the judiciary. It is serious and action must be taken. If the administration becomes aware of crimes where employees in Malmö’s home care is suspected perpetrators, they must report the incident immediately, says Lisbeth P Ekström (SD).
In a committee initiative, SD proposes, among other things, that procedures be introduced to ensure that suspected crimes are always reported without delay and that support efforts to suffer suffer.

Continued investigation
The police investigation is ongoing and further interrogations are expected to be held. At the same time, the focus is now on how municipality handles these things
