No Ozempic: Jelly Roll Says He Lost Weight By Fighting His Food Addiction Like He Fought His Drug Addiction
Jelly Roll is riding high after a massive night at the 2026 Grammy Awards. This past Sunday night, the rapper-turned-country-artist (whose real name is Jason DeFord) cleaned up at the Grammys, as he won in three Grammys, with the biggest being the award for “Best Contemporary Country Music Album” for his Beautifully Broken project.

The country music artist could barely believe it when his name was called by presenters Jeff Goldblum and Lainey Wilson, and he took the opportunity on a national TV broadcast to witness to the world, proclaiming the name of Jesus to millions all over the world:
“First of all, Jesus I hear you and I am listening Lord. I am listening Lord. Second of all, I want to thank my beautiful wife. I would have never changed my life without you. I would have ended up dead or in jail or I would have killed myself if it wasn’t for you and Jesus. I thank you for that.”
Jelly Roll went on to thank his record label, and shouted out country radio, which he’s had much success with in his still rising country music career.
Once he got all of that out of the way though, he shared his testimony about how far he’s come and how God helped him go from prison to the Grammys stage:
“There was a time in my life y’all that I was broken. That’s why I wrote this album. I didn’t think I had a chance y’all. There were times where I thought the darkest things and thought I was a horrible human. There was a moment in my life where all I had was a (pocket) Bible this big and a radio the same size in a six-by-eight-foot cell. I believed that those two things could change my life.
I believed that music had the power to change my life, and God had the power to change my life. I want to tell you all right now that Jesus is for everybody. Jesus is not owned by one political party. Jesus is not owned by one music label. Jesus is Jesus and anybody can have a relationship with him. I love you Lord.”
And while a ton of focus was on the fact that he won a Grammy, Jelly was looking noticeably slimmer, and he recently underwent a huge weight loss after weighing in around 550 pounds at his highest. He knew he had to make a change, and he’s been very open about this process, recently admitting that it got to the point that he was “disgusted” with himself and struggling to do daily tasks:
“A little bit over a year ago, I was, I literally struggled to walk down my hill to the mailbox. I mean, it was really bad. And I had let myself get to a point of just being absolutely disgusted with myself.”
Flash forward to 2026, and he also reached his goal of being on the cover of Men’s Health and is still on track to continue losing weight:

Of course, it’s a huge win for his overall health, and during a press session after winning his Grammy, Jelly was asked about how he achieved such an impressive goal of losing that much weight, and he explained that a lot of it came down to his “food addiction,” which he says he fought the way he fought his drug addiction:
“Dude, listen, man. First of all, I did a lot of consistent cardio and food. And I had to fight my food addiction just the way I fought my cocaine addiction. I had to really take it serious. I had to change my relationship with food, and had to do a lot of mental therapy and a lot of mental work to block the food noise.”
Contrary to what many probably have assumed (myself included, honestly), he also said that he never used a GLP1, but he doesn’t judge anyone who has used them for weight loss because if you’re over 500 pounds like he was, the most important thing is to get the weight off and getting healthy as soon as possible:
“Never did the GLP1, but I don’t judge nobody who does it. Anybody who is 500 pounds I don’t care if you take one shot or ten, do whatever it takes to get the weight off. Don’t listen to nobody else. Get your life straight, save that heart.”
Regardless of how he did it, it’s clearly taken a ton of work and discipline to not only lose the weight, but keep it off, and I have to imagine it feels great to have finally achieved such a difficult goal:
