The Last Revel’s Fast-Grass New Single, “Go On,” Is A Must-Hear
There is new music on the way from one of bluegrass’ most underrated bands, and Whiskey Riff’s bringing you an exclusive early listen.
Slated for official release tomorrow, “Go On,” the next single off of The Last Revel’s forthcoming record is a fast-paced, string-slinging attack that’ll have bluegrass fans tapping their feet and cutting a rug at shows in no time. Don’t let the boisterously beautiful sound distract you too much, though, as the track features sneakily clever lyricism with thoughtful detail, and a unique backstory.
Written by Ryan Acker, Lee Henke, and Vincenzo Donatelle, three of the band’s four members, “Go On” was inspired by a hunting excursion in Montana, where the majority of the Minneapolis-born band currently resides. Acker, the band’s banjoist and one of the prominent vocalists and songwriters, provided some insightful commentary as to how this song came to be.
“I started writing the lyrics for ‘Go One’ while on a solo mule deer hunt in 2023. A particularly long and cold day of backcountry hiking in the Absaroka Mountains near Livingston, MT let me to a mule deer buck with one side of his antlers broken off, I assume which he lost fighting another buck for their territory. I nicknamed him the ‘twilight fighter.’
It felt easy to draw comparisons to this deer and how sometimes people can be driven blind by love, greed, anger, and pride. My bandmate, Lee Henke, helped me steer the lyrics in this song towards narrations of a failed relationship. The chorus feels great to yell, and the absolutely breakneck speed that we played in the studio helps the song reflect the lyrical sentiment.”
So without further ado, check out The Last Revel’s next single “Go On” here:
It always amazes me how talented artists such as the guys in The Last Revel can take something like a deer hunt and use it as the background and inspiration for a song about a completely different phenomenon – In this case a failing relationship, as Ackers mentioned. Luckily for us, though, there is plenty more where this came from, and The Last Revel has even more music on the way.
Dropping on July 18, The Last Revel’s sixth album is titled Gone for Good and features 10 original tracks, including the lead single “Solid Gone” that was released last month. Produced by the legendary Dave Simonett, an incredible musician who is best known as the lead singer for Minnesota bluegrass outfit Trample by Turtles, it’s clear The Last Revel picked the perfect man for the job as their next project comes to life.
Here a look at the tracklist:
Gone for Good Tracklist:
“Solid Gone”
“Static”
“Go On”
“Jealousy”
“Wait Up”
“Simple Wheel”
“Holy Moly”
“Tall Grass”
“Until Death”
“Porcelain”
Forming in Minneapolis in the early 2010s, The Last Revel built a strong regional following on the strength of their music and live show before embarking on an indefinite hiatus in 2019. Ultimately getting the band back together in 2021, they hit the road touring again shortly thereafter and released their latest album Dovetail in 2023, proving they came back better than ever. Continuing that effort into an extensive summer tour this year, as well as what is shaping up to be a spectacular album later this summer, I think it’s safe to say that The Last Revel is ready for their breakthrough moment, and I am hoping that Gone for Good is just the catalyst they needed.
Be on the lookout for “Go On” to hit streaming platforms tomorrow, and prepare yourself for one of the best albums of the summer on July 18. Oh, and make sure to check out The Last Revel’s summer tour, too. The recordings are great, but these songs are even better live, so you do not want to miss a show if they are coming to a town near you.
