JD Vance: There Will Be No U.S. ‘Boots On The Ground’ In Israel, Gaza

Vice President JD Vance said that there will be no American “boots on the ground” in Israel, though troops in the region will monitor the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the terror group Hamas. Vance appeared on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” on Sunday and clarified the role of U.S. service members in Israel after a report last week said 200 U.S. soldiers would be stationed in Israel. Vance said that U.S. Central Command “already [has] people in that region of the world” to help with oversight. “We’re not planning to put boots on the ground. What we already have is a U.S. Central Command, we already have people in that region of the world,” said Vance. “They’re going to monitor the terms of the ceasefire. They’re going to monitor, ensure the humanitarian aid is flowing.” The vice president specified that the Trump administration will not put “boots on the ground in Gaza or Israel,” but “Central Command troops that are already there … are going to monitor this peace proposal.” “We’ve actually had – and this is one of the great successes of the president’s diplomacy from Indonesia to the Gulf Arab states – we’ve had a number of Muslim majority countries offer to step up and have them put troops on the ground to secure Gaza. It’s not going to be necessary for American troops to be in Gaza,” Vance added. The U.S. will not have “boots on the ground in Gaza or Israel,” says @VP. “We’re going to have CENTCOM troops that are already there that are going to monitor this peace proposal… It’s not going to be necessary for American troops to be in Gaza.” pic.twitter.com/pOMPhVzLeG — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) October 12, 2025 On CBS News’ “Face The Nation” on Sunday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty confirmed that Egypt is in the process of coordinating with other Arab countries to deploy troops to Gaza to train Gazan police forces as well as control the enclave that has been ruled by terrorists for decades. “We are in the process now, as we speak, [of] providing training and coordination with Jordan to train up to 5,000 Palestinians to be deployed in Gaza,” said Abdelatty. “Deployment of international forces is on the table,” he said, adding that Egypt supports the idea. “We are going to support and to commit troops within specific parameters,” the foreign minister said, though he noted that Egyptian troops would only be committed once certain demands are met, such as receiving a clearly defined mission for an international force from the U.N. security council. When asked if Egypt will provide troops on the ground in Gaza to help support its security and stabilization, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty says, “Deployment of international force is on the table. We are supporting this idea, of course.” “We are going to support and… pic.twitter.com/NsdNdrgJye — Face The Nation (@FaceTheNation) October 12, 2025

Baking a pie this fall? Don’t make these 5 classic crust mistakes

Baking a pie this fall? Don’t make these 5 classic crust mistakes

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM As the air turns crisp and the calendar inches toward Thanksgiving, there are few kitchen victories more satisfying than a golden, flaky pie crust. Whether you’re dreaming of a spiced apple lattice or a savory pot pie, your crust is the foundation of it all. But even seasoned home bakers can slip up with a few easily avoidable errors. Pie perfection isn’t about fancy equipment or years of pastry school; it’s about understanding the basics and showing your dough a little respect. Here’s what the experts say you should absolutely not do. Preheating isn’t optional If your oven’s still warming up when your pie goes in, you’re already off to a rough start. “High temperatures are important for making pie crust: think 375 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit,” says Candace Foster, pastry chef at Bayonet in Birmingham, Alabama. A properly hot oven seals the exterior of the crust quickly, helping it hold its shape and preventing shrinkage. It’s the same principle behind crisp, golden biscuits or scones: heat locks in structure. Cold ingredients are your secret weapon You want your oven blazing, but your ingredients? Ice cold. That includes butter, water, and even your mixing bowl if you’re being extra cautious. Executive pastry chef Michael Galindo of Indaco in Greenville, South Carolina recommends grating frozen butter into your flour or freezing pre-cut chunks. “You’ll want to use ice water, too—the colder the better. Fill up a pitcher with ice and water and put it in the freezer until it’s time to add it to the dough,” he advises. Add liquid like a pro Once your butter and flour have formed that signature sandy texture, resist the urge to splash in all your water at once. According to Joanne Gallagher, recipe developer and co-founder of Inspired Taste, “Add your liquid a tablespoon at a time. Too much or too little can throw off the balance, so mix gently and keep an eye on the texture.” You’re aiming for dough that feels cool, pliable, and holds together without being wet or crumbly. Don’t knead it like bread If you’ve ever handled pizza or bread dough, you might be tempted to apply the same elbow grease here. Don’t. “The biggest mistake people make with pie crust is overworking the dough,” says Kelly Jacques, co-owner of Ayu Bakehouse in New Orleans. Visible specks of butter? That’s a good thing. “They will lead to flakiness. The rolling and shaping process is what works the butter in.” Foster adds, “You want your pie dough to be the opposite of stretchy and chewy. It should be short, crisp, and crumbly or flaky.” Cool now, thank yourself later Great pie dough takes time. No, not because it’s complicated, but because it needs to chill. Literally. “The dough should be very cold, like butter straight from the fridge,” says Foster. This rapid cold-to-hot transition in the oven creates steam pockets in the dough, which puff into those coveted flaky layers. If your dough is too soft going in, your crust will fall flat, both visually and texturally. And when the baking’s done, patience still matters. Ron Silver, chef and owner of Bubby’s in Tribeca, recommends letting your pie cool for at least four hours before slicing in. That wait ensures your filling sets properly and your crust stays intact. Final thoughts With a few tweaks in timing, temperature, and technique, pie dough doesn’t have to be intimidating. It just has to be respected. This fall, skip the store-bought shortcuts and let your crust do the talking. The post Baking a pie this fall? Low-dose aspirin may cut risk of colorectal cancer returning in key patients, study shows

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM A low-cost, widely available drug might offer major protection against one of the most common cancers worldwide. New research out of Sweden suggests that a low daily dose of aspirin could significantly reduce the chance of colorectal cancer returning after surgery, but only for certain patients with specific genetic mutations. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, stem from the Alascca trial led by Professor Anna Martling at the Karolinska Institute. Her team followed more than 3,500 colorectal cancer patients across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland to determine whether aspirin could play a role in preventing cancer recurrence. A striking reduction in recurrence risk After analyzing genetic tests from 2,980 participants, the researchers identified that 1,103 individuals, which amounts to about 37 percent, had mutations in a pathway called PI3K, known to be involved in colorectal cancer. These patients were randomly assigned to receive either 160 milligrams of aspirin daily or a placebo for three years following surgery. The study resulted in a dramatic 55 percent reduction in the risk of cancer returning among those who took aspirin. “If you had these mutations, the risk of the cancer coming back was lowered by more than 50 percent. It is a huge effect,” said Martling. “I think this will change clinical practice.” Understanding why aspirin works While aspirin has long been studied for its protective benefits in cardiovascular health, its role in cancer prevention has gained growing attention in recent years. In this trial, the drug appeared to suppress inflammation, disrupt the PI3K pathway, and reduce the activity of blood platelets, which can shield tumor cells from the body’s immune system. Earlier research had shown aspirin’s ability to help prevent colorectal cancer in individuals with hereditary conditions like Lynch syndrome, but its effectiveness in preventing recurrence after tumor removal remained an open question until now. Genetic testing could guide treatment Martling emphasized the importance of routine genetic testing for colorectal cancer patients. By identifying those with PI3K mutations, healthcare providers could tailor post-surgical care and offer aspirin as a targeted, cost-effective prevention strategy. “It’s a widely available drug that is extremely inexpensive,” Martling noted. “We now have strong evidence to support offering it to the right group of patients.” Weighing benefits and risks Despite its accessibility and affordability, aspirin is not without risks. In the trial, four participants experienced severe side effects possibly related to aspirin, including gastrointestinal bleeding, an allergic reaction, and brain hemorrhage. One patient’s death may have been linked to the drug. These findings underscore the need for careful risk-benefit assessments and consultation with healthcare providers before beginning long-term aspirin use, especially for individuals with underlying conditions or bleeding risks. A step forward in personalized cancer care Experts believe this research adds to a growing body of evidence supporting aspirin as a tool in cancer prevention, but only when used strategically. Dr. Catherine Elliott, director of research at Cancer Research UK, welcomed the findings. “There is increasing evidence that in certain groups of people, low-dose aspirin can offer protection from bowel cancer,” she said. She also pointed to the CaPP3 trial, which found a similar benefit for individuals with Lynch syndrome. “We need larger, high-quality studies like CaPP3 and this recent research to confirm who would most benefit from taking aspirin to help them live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer,” Elliott declared.
