Simply beautiful. Last week, American Idol returned for its 24th season. This year, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie returned as judges; however, former Idol winner and country superstar, Carrie Underwood, returned to the show in her first year as a judge. So far, it’s already been a pretty stellar season from a country music perspective, highlighted by 16-year-old Michael Garner delivering a stellar acoustic rendition of The Red Clay Strays’ “I’m Still Fine.” Though it’s still early in the season, the most moving moment of the year very well might have come last night, which brought Underwood herself to tears. Stepping on stage was none other than 25-year-old Hannah Harper. As a Missouri native, Harper was born into a traveling bluegrass gospel family, which enabled her to begin her musical journey at only nine years old. Spending seven years on the road with her family, she became a worship leader at a small church in Missouri, where she would meet her husband Devon. After getting married in 2018, the couple would have had three kids, who Harper bases a lot of her content online and music about. Over the past few years, the Missouri native has garnered quite a large following online, currently having over 100,000 followers on Instagram (being followed by the likes of Zach Top, Ernest, Jake Owen and more) as well as 153,000 followers on TikTok. Despite having quite a few viral videos on the platform, it’s safe to say her Idol performance is something she never could have dreamed of. Even before she performed her moving original song, “String Cheese,” Harper immediately caught the eye of Underwood, who would comment on her eye-catching homemade dress before calling the 25-year-old her “favorite person.” When asked by Richie what the song is about, she would explain that it was a reflection of her battle with postpartum depression. As the mother of three explained, shortly after her youngest son, who is one, was born, she simply couldn’t shake it. After praying for her spirit to be calmed, she had what can only be described as a wake-up call when she was asked by her son to open up a package of the titular string cheese. “My youngest is one, and shortly after he was born, I had postpartum depression. So I was sitting on my couch, wallowing. And you have boys, you know, everybody wants to touch you, and I didn’t want to be touched… I was just having a pity party, praying that the Lord would calm my spirit. My son kept coming up to me. He said, ‘Mom, open this. Mom, open this. Open my cheese. I’m like, ‘Leave me alone with the dadgum cheese.'” To her, that simple moment finally gave her motivation and made her realize how precious life with her three children truly is. “And I finally opened his cheese, and when I did, I realized that God had put me in that place and that where I was in my house was the biggest ministry that I could ever have. And being a mom, I gathered myself, and I got up off the couch and I quit throwing a pity party and I realized that was exactly what I wanted. I kinda kicked the postpartum depression in the butt, and I said, ‘I ain’t doing it.’ So I wrote this song called ‘String Cheese.'” After tearing up and getting a tissue from Underwood, she’d then proceed to perform the first two verses and the chorus to her debut single, “String Cheese,” which was released on May 5, 2025. “I warm my morning coffee up for the third time Ms. Rachel on the TV with their favorite nursery rhyme Hot Wheels and little people under my feet Babies crying, it’s pure chaos, but I don’t miss a beat I always knew that a 9 to 5 wouldn’t suit me very good But my hours are extended; that’s just motherhood I never knew this is what my 20’s would look like But they saved me before I had the chance to waste my life” “One day I’ll be alone with a hot fresh cup of Joe Wishing that someone would just drop by And I’ll sit and reminisce, the times that I sure miss Scattered toys and a baby on my hip I thought finding peace in the quiet’s what I wanted But I’d give anything back to being needed” “Some days I wanna cry, run away and hide But I worry about their every need When I’m ovеrwhelmed and touched out Thеy come climbin’ up on the couch Sayin’, ‘Mama, can you open my string cheese?’ And I smile because I know meeting their needs feels my soul And being their mama is who I’m meant to be” By the time Harper finished the final line of the chorus, Underwood was overcome with emotion, wiping away tears before asking for more tissues. Immediately after, she’d praise the 25-year-old: “Well, that’s about the most relatable song I’ve ever heard… You might be my favorite person who’s walked through those doors in the past three days. You’re gorgeous. You look famous already. I just think you have a beautiful simplicity to your voice. You’re one that I’m gonna think about when we leave here… I love everything about everything you just did.” All I can say is, “Wow.” In a time where women in country are finally receiving the attention they severely lacked for years, “String Cheese” is just another shining example of the talent that has been getting overlooked for years. Undeniably country, beautifully penned and wholly relatable for mothers everywhere, it’s nothing short of a beautiful song. It also looks like it’s primed to become a hit for the up-and-coming artist, thanks to how viral it’s been going online. In just 16 hours, it has 2.2 million views and 161,00 likes on Instagram alone. On TikTok, it’s even bigger, having a staggering 5.2 million views, 786,800 likes along with 12,900 comments and 134,000 shares. “String Cheese” has also garnered high praise from a plethora of different artists, ranging from Randy Houser to Emily Ann Roberts. “Damn.
