You hate to see an American business that has been in business for over a century possibly throwing in the towel. Kodak has announced that its future is extremely doubtful. The technology company announced on Monday that it is extremely doubtful that it will operate in the future due to its lack of financial resources. CBS reported more on Kodak’s potential plans to end its business: Kodak is warning that its future in business is looking very blurry. The iconic 133-year-old business cautioned Monday that there’s “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue as a going concern because it might not have the financial resources to meet its future debt obligations, according to an Aug. 11 regulatory filing. A so-called going concern warning is an accounting term that signals a risk that a business might cease operations. Shares of Kodak plunged $1.73, or 26%, to $5.05 in Tuesday morning trading. Reached for comment, a Kodak spokesperson pointed to the statement in its regulatory filing. The warning is the latest development in the photography company’s storied history, which includes introducing one of the first consumer cameras in the 1880s and mass manufacturing film rolls for hobbyists and professionals alike. But Kodak struggled to adapt when digital cameras overtook film starting in the 1990s, leading to a bankruptcy filing in 2012. Its current financial crunch is tied to almost $500 million in short-term debt obligations, as well as more than $200 million in pension liabilities. Last year, Kodak had said it would end its pension plan in order to reduce debt, according to the Wall Street Journal. David Bullwinkle, Kodak’s chief financial officer, said the company is prioritizing its advanced chemicals and materials business moving forward. Kodak also recently announced cuts to its retirement plan in an effort to pay down debt. Bullwinkle said the company expects to “have a clear understanding” of how it will address its financial obligations by Friday, Aug. 15.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering revoking its authorization of Pfizer’s COVID-19 jab for healthy children under the age of 5, CNBC reports. However, the shot for children 5-11 years old — also still under EUA — is expected to be fully approved this fall, the email said. Andrew Nixon, communications director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), said in an email Tuesday to The Defender: “The COVID-19 pandemic ended with the expiration of the federal public health emergency in May 2023. We do not comment on potential, future regulatory changes. Unless officially announced by HHS, discussion about future agency action should be regarded as pure speculation.” Pfizer confirmed the FDA’s possible move on Monday and said it was “currently in discussions with the agency on potential paths forward,” the Times reported. Moderna is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to boost supplies of its own Covid shot for children, the Guardian reported Saturday. In July, the FDA granted full approval to Moderna’s Covid vaccine for children — but only for those with one more more health conditions that may put them at increased risk of severe illness if they become infected. The shots from both Moderna and Pfizer use messenger RNA technology. Kennedy has targeted those vaccines in the past, filing a petition in May 2021 demanding that the agency revoke authorization of the jabs. Meanwhile, Novavax’s protein-based shot has never been available for children under 12. In May, Kennedy announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has removed its recommendation of Covid vaccines for healthy children and pregnant women. But in updated guidance days later, the CDC said the shots “may” be given to those kids if a doctor agreed that it was necessary. Covid vaccines during pregnancy are now listed as “No Guidance/Not Applicable,” where they were previously recommended for all pregnant adults.
