More updates to follow. — Viral News NYC (@ViralNewsNYC) May 13, 2025 ABC News reported: A federal judge on Tuesday seized control of New York City’s notorious jail complex on Rikers Island, which will now be run by an official who reports directly to the court. In a 77-page ruling, Judge Laura Taylor Swain wrote that she found the conduct of the city over the last nine years “leaves no doubt that continued insistence on compliance with the court’s orders by persons answerable principally to political authorities would lead only to confrontation and delay.” She also wrote “that the current management structure and staffing are insufficient to turn the tide within a reasonable period; that defendants have consistently fallen short of the requisite compliance with court orders for years, at times under circumstances that suggest bad faith; and that enormous resources — that the city devotes to a system that is at the same time overstaffed and underserved — are not being deployed effectively.” The New York Post explained further: The order comes months after Swain found the Big Apple to be in contempt of a 2015 court order and settlement agreement to drastically reform the violence-plagued system — a task that previously fell to a court-appointed monitor who spent years growing more and more frustrated with city and jail officials’ alleged stonewalling. Now the monitor is out — and the city will no longer control the jails until conditions are improved. “The continued existence of extremely dangerous and unsafe conditions led the Court to hold Defendants in contempt of a staggering eighteen provisions of the Nunez Court Orders and indicates that the Department has not yet taken the bold steps required to move the jails toward safety levels that comply with the Constitution,” the judge wrote. Mayor Eric Adams tried to downplay the stunning snatching of power and pointed the finger at progressive laws that have barred the city from investing in infrastructure on Rikers. “We’ve talked about Rikers over and over again,” Hizzoner said during his weekly news conference. “The problems on Rikers were decades in the making. The arrest of Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan should stand as a warning. Democrats say it’s a scare tactic to deter judges from blocking the crackdown. In a way, it is, but not on purpose. Justice being served should always be a deterrent to those debating if they should commit a crime. Dugan was charged in April with concealing someone from ICE to prevent arrest and obstruction. Federal prosecutors filed the complaint directly, bypassing a grand jury. Other judges will be thinking twice if they’re tempted to do the same. Democrats have accused the Trump administration of trying to make a national example of Dugan to chill judicial opposition to the crackdown. Prosecutors charged Dugan in April via complaint with concealing an individual to prevent arrest and obstruction. In the federal criminal justice system, prosecutors can initiate charges against a defendant directly by filing a complaint or present evidence to a grand jury and let that body decide whether to issue charges. A grand jury still reviews charges brought by complaint to determine whether enough probable cause exists to continue the case as a check on prosecutors’ power. If the grand jury determines there’s probable cause, it issues a written statement of the charges known as an indictment. That’s what happened in Dugan’s case. Her case is similar to one brought during the first Trump administration against a Massachusetts judge, who was accused of helping a man sneak out a courthouse back door to evade a waiting immigration enforcement agent. Gabbard fired Mike Collins, who was serving as the acting chair of the National Intelligence Council, and his deputy, Maria Langan-Riekhof, Tuesday, senior intelligence officials told Fox News Digital. Fox News Digital reached out Langan-Riekhof for comment and did not immediately hear back, and couldn’t immediately find contact information for Collins. Collins also has whistleblower complaints against him for political bias and “deliberately undermining the incoming Trump administration,” officials said. They added that Collins was closely associated with Michael Morrell, the former deputy director of the CIA who worked to write a public letter in 2020 claiming that Hunter Biden’s laptop had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation,” and to get signatures from top ex-intelligence officials. As for Langan-Reikhof, officials said she has been a “key advocate” for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and is someone who whistleblowers allege is “radically opposed to Trump.” Meanwhile, Gabbard is moving the National Intelligence Council from the CIA to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to “directly hold accountable any improper action and politicization of intelligence,” Fox News Digital has learned. The Hill added: It’s a big shift at an entity the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) bills as part of the “analytic arm” of the intelligence community, with tasks including coordinating with policymakers. In addition to the removal of the two aides, Gabbard also uprooted the council from its office space at the CIA, returning it to quarters within the ODNI. “The director is working alongside President Trump to end the weaponization and politicization of the intelligence community,” an ODNI spokesperson told The Hill.
