Senate Confirms President Trump’s Pick To Lead Key Agency With Vote Of 51-45

Even as most Senate Democrats instinctively oppose any nominee put forward by President Donald Trump, there has been a glimmer of bipartisanship from time to time since confirmation hearings began last month. I’m still hearing Senator Fetterman as the voice of reason for those that were real Democrats. He knows nothing will be accomplished unless we’re able to listen and agree on those principles that are good for America. He’s been open to schedule meetings with any of Trump’s… pic.twitter.com/RBspY9E7Bk — Victoria (@Loveof1776) January 18, 2025 When Howard Lutnick, Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Commerce, came up for a vote on Capitol Hill this week, his confirmation sailed through the narrowly divided chamber by a relatively decisive six-vote margin. @HowardLutnick’s confirmation as Commerce Secretary highlights President Trump’s commitment to unleashing economic growth, strengthening American businesses, and putting America first in global trade. MAKE AMERICA PROSPEROUS AGAIN! pic.twitter.com/BHZ7J6H0Q2 — The White House (@WhiteHouse) February 19, 2025 Fox News provided some context to Tuesday’s senate vote: Lutnick, chair and CEO of investment firm Cantor Fitzgerald, is one of the wealthiest people to serve in a presidential administration. Lutnick vowed to divest his financial interests upon confirmation to remain impartial. “My plan is to only serve the American people. So I will divest, meaning I will sell all of my interests, all of my business interests, all of my assets, everything,” Lutnick said. “I’ve worked together with the Office of Government Ethics, and we’ve reached agreement on how to do that, and I will be divesting within 90 days upon my confirmation.” During his confirmation hearing on Jan. 29, Lutnick said he would sell his businesses and elect someone else to lead them once confirmed. Lutnick aligned closely with Trump’s trade and tariff policies during the hearing. He said it’s “nonsense” that tariffs create inflation and advocated for reciprocity. His policy opinions have made him a popular pick among many Trump-supporting Americans: BREAKING: The Senate just voted to confirm Howard Lutnick as Commerce Secretary. Lutnick supports eliminating the income tax & funding the government using tariffs. This is a HUGE confirmation: — Derrick Evans (@DerrickEvans4WV) February 18, 2025 #BREAKING: Howard Lutnick has officially been confirmed as President Trump’s Secretary of Commerce Lutnick will work with Trump on making sure NOBODY takes advantage of the United States in trade. Congratulations, Secretary Lutnick! pic.twitter.com/amrFXJIUTm — Nick Sortor (@nicksortor) February 18, 2025 One 9/11-related aspect of his personal life has also driven some of the coverage surrounding his confirmation: JUST IN: Senate has confirmed Howard Lutnick as Commerce Secretary, 51 to 45. Lutnick lost over 650 friends, family members & employees in the attack on the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001. This is one of the most powerful stories you’ll ever hear.pic.twitter.com/qLvS79f5A4 — Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) February 18, 2025 Politico addressed that chapter of his life in its report on the Senate vote: Lawmakers voted 51-45 to confirm Lutnick, who rebuilt the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and co-chaired Trump’s 2024 transition team. He will now be in place to oversee the agency tasked with bolstering economic growth and a slew of subagencies including the Census Bureau, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Lutnick has said he plans to bolster American innovation in artificial intelligence and help the U.S. compete with China in technology innovations. And he has spoken of the need to ramp up broadband access around the country. He also has embraced Trump’s tariff strategy to boost American industry, a plan that most Republicans have welcomed despite some reservations over potential cost increases for consumers. Democrats hammered Lutnick and the Trump administration throughout the confirmation process for heavily relying on tariffs, saying they would raise prices. Here’s a clip of Lutnick’s remarks at a Trump rally shortly before Election Day:

Catholic Bishops SUE Trump Administration For Cutting Off “Refugee Resettlement” Funding

Catholic Bishops SUE Trump Administration For Cutting Off “Refugee Resettlement” Funding

A Catholic national agency of bishops is launching a lawsuit against the Trump administration for cutting off funding to their private “refugee resettlement” program. In other words, Catholic bishops are suing because Trump just stemmed the flow of cash — funded by our tax money — they were using to help illegal immigrants stay in our nation. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops claims that the administration’s halt on funding is unlawful because it violates the constitutional provision that grants power of the purse to Congress, which had approved their funding for housing illegal immigrants. Here’s what’s being reported: US Catholic Conference of Bishops sues Trump administration for cutting funding for refugee resettlement. Follow: @AFpost pic.twitter.com/Utq4fM8Sho — AF Post (@AFpost) February 19, 2025 US Conference of Catholic Bishops sues the Trump administration over its abrupt halt to refugee resettlement funding, calling the action unlawful and harmful to newly arrived refugees. REMINDER: if you enter the Vatican illegally…ie somehow making it over the 30 ft walls or inside one of the gates…you will be thrown in… pic.twitter.com/qIEaRkANHW — Catholics for Catholics (@CforCatholics) February 19, 2025 AP has more details on the lawsuit: Catholic bishops sued the Trump administration on Tuesday over its abrupt halt to funding of refugee resettlement, calling the action unlawful and harmful to newly arrived refugees and to the nation’s largest private resettlement program. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says the administration, by withholding millions even for reimbursements of costs incurred before the sudden cut-off of funding, violates various laws as well as the constitutional provision giving the power of the purse to Congress, which already approved the funding. The conference’s Migration and Refugee Services has sent layoff notices to 50 workers, more than half its staff, with additional cuts expected in local Catholic Charities offices that partner with the national office, the lawsuit said. “The Catholic Church always works to uphold the common good of all and promote the dignity of the human person, especially the most vulnerable among us,” said Archbishop Timothy Broglio, president of the USCCB. “That includes the unborn, the poor, the stranger, the elderly and infirm, and migrants.” The funding suspension prevents the church from doing so, he said. “The conference suddenly finds itself unable to sustain its work to care for the thousands of refugees who were welcomed into our country and assigned to the care of the USCCB by the government after being granted legal status,” Broglio said. The Hill added: The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) on Tuesday sued to challenge the Trump administration’s moves to block funding for refugee resettlement programs. Immigration groups have already sued the administration for suspending new refugee admissions, but the new lawsuit seeks to stop the State Department from freezing funding for local organizations that partner with the federal government to support refugees once they arrive in the United States. The USCCB’s suit says more than 6,700 admitted refugees were assigned to it when its funding was suspended late last month, leaving the organization on the hook for millions of dollars weekly and already forcing it to lay off employees. “Refugees who have already entered the United States may soon be cut off from support, contravening the statutorily expressed will of Congress and making it more difficult for them to establish themselves as productive members of society,” reads the complaint. The lawsuit, filed in Washington, D.C., federal district court, claims the freeze undermines Congress’s power of the purse and violates multiple federal laws.

Elon Musk: “I Like Bobby…Questioning Is The Essence of Science”

During Elon Musk’s joint interview with President Trump on Sean Hannity’s show tonight, he solidly backed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his efforts to Make America Healthy Again. “I like Bobby, actually,” Elon told Hannity, going on to explain how he sees RFK Jr. as someone the media and leftists paint as an “anti-science” figure. But, in reality, “He just wants to question the science, which is the essence of science…The scientific method, fundamentally, is about always questioning the science.” Could’ve have said it any better! Watch here: NEW: Elon Musk issues a profound statement, defending Bobby Kennedy Jr. “I think he’s unfairly maligned as someone who is anti-science, but I think he isn’t. But, you probably remember DeJoy best from back in December, when he covered his ears while being grilled by Congress about his many failures. Flashback: NEW: The Postmaster General Louis DeJoy covers his ears during a Congressional Hearing as Representative McCormick rips him for “bankrupting” USPS. pic.twitter.com/2OCR42Luy4 — Trending Politics (@tpbreaking) December 10, 2024 Missouri House Rep. Mark Alford bid DeJoy farewell: Good riddance, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. His impending departure is promising news for Missourians who have faced repeated problems with their mail. I look forward to working with whoever @POTUS nominates to ensure MO-04’s mail is delivered in a timely manner. https://t.co/mIE9mgUmGT — Rep. Mark Alford (@RepMarkAlford) February 18, 2025 DeJoy’s resignation follows reports of crushing financial problems at the USPS, which is facing billions of dollars in projected losses. From Fox News: Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Tuesday announced that he would be stepping down as the U.S. Postal Service tries to recover from hundreds of billions of dollars in predicted losses within the next decade. DeJoy, who was appointed during President Donald Trump‘s first term, notified the Postal Service Board of Governors that it was time to find a suitable successor. “While there remains much critical work to be done to ensure that the Postal Service can be financially viable as we continue to serve the nation in our essential public service mission, I have decided it is time to start the process of identifying my successor and of preparing the Postal Service for this change,” DeJoy said in a statement. “After four and half years leading one of America’s greatest public institutions through dramatic change during unusual times, it is time for me to start thinking about the next phase of my life, while also ensuring that the Postal Service is fully prepared for the future,” he added. DeJoy said a timely and methodic approach is needed to find someone to lead the organization, followed by a “period of dedicated focus” to position the Postal Service for financial success. AP added: Louis DeJoy, the head of the U.S. Postal Service, intends to step down, the federal agency said Tuesday, after a nearly five-year tenure marked by the coronavirus pandemic, surges in mail-in election ballots and efforts to stem losses through cost and service cuts. In a Monday letter, Postmaster General DeJoy asked the Postal Service Board of Governors to begin looking for his successor. “As you know, I have worked tirelessly to lead the 640,000 men and women of the Postal Service in accomplishing an extraordinary transformation,” he wrote. “We have served the American people through an unprecedented pandemic and through a period of high inflation and sensationalized politics.” DeJoy took the helm of the postal service in the summer of 2020 during President Donald Trump’s first term. He was a Republican donor who owned a logistics business before taking office and was the first postmaster general in nearly two decades who was not a career postal employee. DeJoy developed a 10-year plan to modernize operations and stem losses. He previously said that postal customers should get used to “uncomfortable” rate hikes as the postal service seeks to stabilize its finances and become more self-sufficient.
