The Potato Bug‚ Or Jerusalem Cricket‚ Is Neither A Potato‚ Bug‚ Nor Cricket

Say hello to the potato bug. These giant flightless insects are also known as Jerusalem crickets‚ which is interesting because they are neither potatoes‚ bugs‚ nor crickets.Jerusalem crickets span two genera‚ meanwhile the name “potato bug” can refer to a Jerusalem cricket‚ a roly-poly‚ or a Colorado potato beetle. So it seems these massive arthropods are baffling in all sorts of ways. Let’s break it down.What is a Jerusalem cricket&;#63;The Jerusalem cricket isn’t a true cricket‚ and though it's nicknamed the potato bug‚ it isn't a true bug either. Potato bug is the nickname given to two genera of Jerusalem crickets‚ Ammopelmatus and Stenopelmatus. The Jerusalem cricket bite is not venomous‚ and is mostly harmless – but it can hurt a fair bit.  The Jerusalem cricket bite is so impressive that Montana Field Guide recommends you don't keep them in a mesh bag because they'll chew right through it. The potato bug isn't messing around.Image credit: Matthias Blume‚ CC BY-SA 4.0‚ via Wikimedia CommonsA lack of venom isn't to say potato bugs don’t pack a punch‚ however‚ as their bites can draw a little blood‚ which is quite impressive for any insect. Then there's the fact that their nymphs are violent cannibals...Did you say cannibals&;#63;According to a 2017 paper‚ Jerusalem crickets of the Stenopelmatus genus have an appetite for their own kind when they’re nymphs. As metamorphosizing insects‚ they begin as eggs‚ and then develop into nymphs‚ before becoming adults. By their account‚ the Battle Royale between the mid-stage is quite something. “S. talpa nymphs are cannibalistic‚ and the cannibalism was violent‚” they wrote.And the cannibal action doesn’t end there. A 2008 study learned the hard way that Jerusalem crickets aren’t opposed to eating each other when one of their male subjects ate a smaller female. Females also get in on the cannibalistic action‚ occasionally eating males shortly after copulation.What is a potato bug&;#63;Roly-poly‚ ladybug‚ bee – what do all these names have in common&;#63; They identify a group of animals‚ but not a single specific species. The same is true of nicknames like daddy long legs (which aren’t poisonous‚ by the way)‚ and the potato bug‚ which can be one of three distantly related critters.We’ve already covered the Jerusalem cricket‚ then you have the Colorado potato beetle‚ which started in North America and has since spread‚ becoming a very tricky and expensive pest affecting potato crops worldwide. Then there's Armadillidium vulgare‚ the common pill bug‚ which is also sometimes called the potato bug. Then again‚ given how many names there are for woodlice‚ you might as well call it Ian.

Can Information Escape Black Holes&;#63; Physicists Sure Hope So

The black hole information paradox is one of those physics problems that can keep scientists up at night. It strikes at the heart of one of the crucial problems in modern physics: the fact that we can’t reconcile general relativity and quantum mechanics. And it is all black holes’ fault.Both quantum mechanics and general relativity are pinnacles of human knowledge and ingenuity. Truly‚ we should be very proud of ourselves and how well we understand the universe. Still‚ the two do not work together very well‚ and when it comes to certain extreme objects or events‚ they break down – and that is a big problem. The black hole information paradox is one of these cases.In both classical and quantum physics‚ information about the properties of a system allows us to determine the state in the past and in the future. Black holes appeared to be an exception to that. In the 1970s‚ British physicist Stephen Hawking realized that the properties of a black hole depend on just a handful of global parameters: its mass‚ electric charge‚ and angular momentum. And that’s not all. Once they're not actually feeding‚ black holes lose energy in the form of what is now called Hawking radiation‚ which according to his original calculations‚ was independent of the initial state. The expression &;quot;a black hole has no hair&;quot; comes from this.The Hawking radiation would have no past‚ and anything falling into a black hole would suddenly have no future. Information falling into a black hole would be irretrievably lost. This would be a massive problem for physics if it were the case – but it is believed that information is indeed saved and gets out of a black hole. What physicists are uncertain about is how it gets out.So black holes definitely have hair‚ but we don’t know if it’s a stubble or a Dolly Parton-style do&;#33; Ok‚ a blonde wig might be an exaggeration‚ but terms like the &;quot;fuzzball resolution&;quot; and the &;quot;soft-hair solution&;quot; (from Hawking and collaborators) have been proposed to solve this paradox. But there is no single agreed-upon solution yet.The different ideas are a major focus in physics because they might reveal possible ways to make quantum mechanics and relativity work together – not just in black holes‚ but across the whole universe. Some researchers claim that it is possible to solve it without any new physics‚ which is exciting on the one hand but a bit disappointing on the other.All “explainer” articles are confirmed by fact checkers to be correct at time of publishing. Governments Could Stop Inflating If They Wanted. But They Won’t

Governments Could Stop Inflating If They Wanted. But They Won’t

There is no such thing as perennial monetary sovereignty. Price inflation is no coincidence. It is a policy. Governments‚ along with their so-called experts‚ attempt to persuade you that price inflation stems from anything other than the consistent‚ albeit slower‚ rise in aggregate prices year after year. Issuing more currency than the private sector demands‚ thus eroding its purchasing power and creating a constant annual transfer of wealth from real wages and deposit savings to the government. Oil prices are not a cause of inflation but a consequence. Prices increase as more units of the currency used to denominate the commodity shift to relatively scarce assets. Therefore‚ oil prices do not cause inflation; they are one of the signals of currency debasement. Furthermore‚ if oil prices caused inflation‚ we would go from inflation to deflation quickly‚ not from elevated inflation to slower price increases. The same goes for all the causes that governments and their agents try to use as an excuse for rising prices. Most are just manifestations‚ not causes of inflation. Even if the global economy were dominated by three evil and stupid oligopolistic businesses‚ they would not be able to increase aggregate prices and maintain an annual increase if the quantity of currency in the system were to remain equal. Why&;#63; Two things would happen. First‚ those three monopolistic evil corporations would see their working capital soar because citizens would not have enough units of currency to pay for all they produce. Two‚ the rest of the prices would decline as there would be a significantly lower number of units of currency to purchase other goods and services. Even a group of quasi-monopolistic corporations cannot make all prices rise in unison and consolidate the annual level‚ only to continue rising. However‚ the monopolistic issuer of the currency‚ the government‚ can make all prices rise while at the same time diminishing the purchasing power of the units of state debt that they issue. It is surprising to see how some so-called experts say that a few large corporations make all prices rise but deny that the state that monopolizes the creation of money is the cause of price inflation.Power up with Nitric Boost that’s now 40% OFF&;#33; This potent formula gives you the massive edge in strength and superior circulation for that unparalleled performance you've been looking for&;#33; Governments are at the root of rising prices. While banks can generate money—credit—through lending‚ they rely on projects and investments to support these loans. Banks cannot create money to bail themselves out. No financial entity would go bankrupt then. In fact‚ banks’ largest asset imbalance comes from lending at rates below the cost of risk and having government loans and bonds as “no-risk” investments‚ two things that are imposed by regulation‚ law‚ and central bank planning. Meanwhile‚ the state does issue more currency to disguise its fiscal imbalances and bail itself out‚ using regulation‚ legislation‚ and coercion to impose the use of its own form of money. Monopolies cannot simply drive up prices unless they are able to force consumers to use their products without any decline in demand. We also must understand that destructive and inefficient monopolies can only exist if the state imposes them. In any other situation‚ those monopolies disappear due to competition‚ technology‚ and cheaper imports from other nations. So‚ which is the only monopoly that can force consumers to use their product regardless of the real demand for it&;#63; Government fiat money. The government is the largest economic agent and therefore the most important driver of aggregate demand‚ as well as the issuer of currency. The government can end today’s high price-inflation rates any time by eliminating the unnecessary spending that causes the deficit‚ which is the same as money printing. Taxing the private sector to cut price inflation is like starving the children to make the fat parent lose weight. If Senator Warren and President Biden were right and corporations were to blame for rising inflation‚ competition‚ cheaper imports‚ and a decline in demand‚ they would have taken care of their unjustified prices. Only the government can cause and perpetuate inflation‚ using the central bank as its financial arm and regulation as the imposition of the state’s IOU (currency) as the “lowest-risk asset” in banks’ assets. The government creates the currency and imposes it‚ and when its purchasing power declines‚ it blames the economic agents that are forced to use its form of money. MMT defenders and neo-Keynesians say that the government can issue all the currency that they need and that their limit is not fiscal (deficit and debt) but price inflation. It makes no sense because price inflation is the manifestation of an unsustainable fiscal problem‚ reflected in the vanishing confidence in the currency issuer. It is‚ literally‚ like a giant corporation issuing debt endlessly and thinking nothing matters. It is a subterfuge to implement the constant increase in size of government in the economy‚ knowing that once it controls a large part‚ it is virtually impossible to stop the state. Stephanie Kelton and others say the government should spend all it wants and‚ if price inflation rises‚ tax the excessive money away. This is funny. So‚ the government increases size on the way in‚ spending and diluting the purchasing power of the private sector’s earnings and savings‚ and then taxes the private sector‚ thus increasing the size of government on the way out. Furthermore‚ there is no government that would recognize that price inflation comes from spending too much‚ so the destruction of the private sector continues and the diminishing confidence in the currency extends‚ as history has proven numerous times. Governments cannot tax away the price inflation they have created by bloating spending. They can only weaken the private productive sector further and worsen the economic situation and the price inflation outlook. There is no such thing as perennial monetary sovereignty. Like any form of debt‚ currency demand disappears with the government’s solvency and the economic weakness of the private sector consumed by taxes. Once the government destroys confidence in the currency as a reserve of value‚ the private sector will find some other way to make transactions outside of the imposition of a state-issued currency. When governments present themselves as the solution to price inflation with large spending programs and subsidies‚ they are only printing more money‚ like putting out a fire with gasoline. Biden says the government has a plan to cut price inflation‚ but all they have done is perpetuate it‚ making citizens poorer and the productive sector weaker. If Biden wants to cut price inflation‚ all he must do is eliminate the deficit by cutting expenditures. The reason why governments should never oversee monetary policy and be allowed to monetize all deficits is because no administration will cut its size to defend citizens’ wages because nationalization by monetary inflation and taxes is the goal of interventionism: to create a dependent and hostage economy. Could a Landfill Power Your Home&;#63;

Across the United States‚ landfills are accumulating trash faster than materials can decompose. In the nearly 2‚000 landfills in the US‚ food waste contributes over 50 percent of fugitive methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills‚ those invisible plumes of potent greenhouse gas emissions that seep out of landfills and into the atmosphere. Landfills rank as the third-largest human-generated source of methane emissions in the US‚ according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). While diverting trash altogether would be the preferred outcome for pollution reduction‚ about 500 landfills across the country have turned to a novel way of combating pollution from the waste that is ending up in landfills: capturing the gas emitted from organic materials and transforming it into electricity. “Methane is already in our environment today. You either use it or lose it‚” says Mike Bakas‚ alluding to the methane that is wasted if it’s not captured. Bakas leads all landfill projects and renewable natural gas business at Ameresco‚ a company that designs‚ builds and operates renewable energy plants for landfills around the US. Methane gas drawn from Palmetto Landfill provides energy for BMW’s manufacturing facility in Spartanburg‚ South Carolina. Courtesy of Ameresco Methane is a potent greenhouse gas‚ about 28 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping atmospheric heat. Capturing it removes the gas’s ability to stimulate the greenhouse effect that comes with its infiltration into our atmosphere. Landfills that utilize Landfill Gas-to-Energy (LFGTE) systems‚ which allow for the conversion of methane to energy‚ are equipped with infrastructure designed to collect the gas‚ often encased with a layer of clay or synthetic membrane to prevent gas from escaping into the atmosphere. Once collected‚ the methane can be utilized in one of a few ways‚ as electricity to use on-site or feed into the local power grid‚ or as natural gas. The amount of energy generated through LFGTE projects varies widely depending on the size and age of the landfill‚ the composition of waste and the efficiency of the gas collection system.  Crushed by negative news&;#63; Sign up for the Reasons to be Cheerful newsletter. [contact-form-7] One massive landfill that spans 629 acres in Virginia produces enough landfill gas (LFG) to create 70‚000 megawatt hours of energy each year — that’s enough to power about 6‚700 homes for a year‚ based on the average US household’s annual electricity consumption.  While most landfills using LFGTE are actively collecting waste‚ not all of them are. “We’ve got a landfill that’s been shut down for about 10 years and we still have another 10 to 20 years of gas in it‚” says Bakas. Puente Hills in California is the largest LFGTE program in the country‚ producing enough energy to power about 70‚000 homes. Before the Puente Hills landfill closed in 2013‚ it was the largest landfill in the US‚ spanning 700 acres and reaching a whopping height of 500 feet above ground level. In California‚ the Keller Canyon Landfill’s gas-to-energy plant generates enough electricity to power nearly 2‚200 homes. Credit: Ameresco These types of projects first came on the scene in the mid-1970s‚ and experienced a big rise in popularity in the ’90s — largely due to the fact that‚ in 1994‚ the EPA began encouraging landfill operators to develop LFGTE projects through its Landfill Methane Outreach Program.  So why isn’t every landfill owner taking advantage of its latent treasure trove of energy&;#63; Funding‚ mostly. According to Bakas‚ LFGTE systems can cost between $10 million and $100 million to implement.  The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provided tax deductions for landfills to install these systems‚ but there are still limitations that prohibit smaller landfills from being able to finance LFGTE. Specifically‚ the IRA didn’t explicitly permit the use of Investment Tax Credits (ITC) for LFGTE projects‚ something Bakas says the industry is pushing for‚ as it would go a long way in helping smaller landfill projects that wouldn’t otherwise be economically feasible.  There are also caveats embedded among the IRA’s tax offerings that restrict landfills from receiving any of these benefits unless its owner owns both the landfill collection system and the energy processing plant‚ which‚ according to Bakas‚ is often not the case. “So we need the treasury to come out and say‚ you can own either one or both‚ which would free us up to invest money in the equipment we need to do it‚” says Bakas. Ameresco’s Woodland Meadows Landfill gas-to-energy facility in Michigan opened in 2018. Courtesy of Ameresco And supporting these projects isn’t just good for our air quality and atmosphere‚ but potentially for our pockets too. The dollars put into building these systems can be returned through the sale of electricity. And in some regions‚ landfill gas projects can generate renewable energy credits‚ which can be sold to utilities needing to meet renewable energy standards‚ providing an additional revenue stream. But these projects aren’t always profitable‚ and some may not have the capacity to ever be. “To the extent that the site is economic‚ which I don’t think it’s a guarantee that it is‚ operators would probably look at how much [energy] can we produce … and how close are we to where the energy can be used&;#63;” says Daniel Bresette‚ president of the Environmental and Energy Study Institute. Bresette says that if a plant is processing landfill gas for electricity‚ as opposed to other types of energy‚ the plant may be able to do so with existing equipment‚ and with less concern for where the landfill is located. This is because the electricity can be fed directly into the energy grid‚ rather than needing to be transferred off-site to be processed. Become a sustaining member today&;#33; Join the Reasons to be Cheerful community by supporting our nonprofit publication and giving what you can. Join The EPA estimates that a project that requires the installation of a new capture system would cost about $8.5 million to install and maintain‚ and would cost about another $3.5 million over the course of its 15-year lifespan. That number would drop dramatically for a project that doesn’t require the support of a supplemental capture facility to process the LFG. It would also drop if tax credits‚ carbon credits or on-site electricity are utilized. Landfills of a certain size are required by the Clean Air Act to install and operate gas collection systems. For those that don’t meet sizing requirements‚ the industry is pushing for more government support. “If the treasury confirms that we can use the ITC tax credits under the IRA towards these projects‚ then those smaller projects that were not economic might very well become economic‚” says Bakas.
