The New York Post reported: Furious Los Angeles residents tore into their absent Mayor Karen Bass, who was 7,400 miles away in Arica on a political trip as raging fires turned the City of Angels into an apocalyptic hellscape Tuesday. “RESIGN! WHY ARE YOU IN GHANA?!,” one person commented on an X post by Bass’ office giving an update on the wildfires. Bass traveled with three other people to Ghana for the inaguration of President John Dramani Mahama, who was elected last year. “Hey Karen! How’s Ghana?” another person asked. “LA you ask? Yeah it’s burning to the f–king ground but it’s better you’re not here anyways because you’re useless.” Others demanded that Bass, who took office in 2022, resign from her post. “You’re a disgrace & embarrassment to our country,” one comment read. “You need to resign you incompetent fool,” said another. Newsweek added: Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has been criticized after it emerged she was out of the country, attending a presidential inauguration in Ghana, as northern and western suburbs of her city were hit by devastating wildfires fanned by high winds. Media outlet INKL News reported this morning that Bass was on her way back to Los Angeles and should return to the city within hours… Bass had been in Ghana as part of a four-member U.S. presidential delegation attending the inauguration of new Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. She has come under attack for not returning to the U.S. sooner in response to the infernos, with Caruso telling local network Fox 11 that there had been a “failure” of leadership and management adding that “everybody knew these winds were coming” so the risk should have been anticipated. Caruso also questioned why brush in the hills surrounding Los Angeles hadn’t been removed to reduce the fire risk and claimed a “reservoir was not refilled in time and in a timely manner to keep the hydrants going,” which he blamed on city authorities.

AP reported: The Biden administration is set to announce a massive, final weapons aid package for Ukraine as part of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s visit to Germany on Thursday to meet with representatives of about 50 partner nations who have come to Ukraine’s defense since Russia invaded nearly three years ago, two senior defense officials said. The officials did not provide an exact dollar amount but said the package was expected to be “substantial,” although it would not include all of the roughly $4 billion left in the congressionally authorized funding for Ukraine. There likely would be “more than a couple of billion dollars” remaining for the incoming Trump defense team to provide to Ukraine if it chose to do so, the officials said Tuesday in briefing reporters traveling with Austin. Ukraine is in the midst of launching a second offensive in Russia’s Kursk region and is facing a barrage of long-range missiles and ongoing advances from Russia as both sides seek to put themselves in the strongest negotiating point possible before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20. Bloomberg added: President Joe Biden’s administration is preparing to announce Wednesday the final $500 million dollars in US military assistance it will provide to Ukraine, according to people familiar with the plans. The aid will come through Presidential Drawdown Authority, which pulls military supplies and weapons from US stockpiles, according to the people, who asked not to be identified in advance of the announcement. The Pentagon didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The Associated Press reported the planned aid earlier Wednesday. The $500 million will mark the end of about $65 billion in security assistance the Biden administration has funneled to Kyiv since Russia’s February 2022 invasion. President—elect Donald Trump, who takes office in less than two weeks, has been critical of that aid and Biden’s handling of the war, and has pledged to wind down the conflict swiftly.
