Will Comet G3 ATLAS Perform at Perihelion?

Comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS may put on a quick show this month. Comet G3 ATLAS on December 30th. Credit: Alan C. Tough What ‘may’ be the best anticipated comet of 2025 is coming right up. Right now, there’s only one comet with real potential to reach naked eye visibility in 2025: Comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS. This comet reaches perihelion at 0.094 Astronomical Units (AU, 8.7 million miles or 14 million kilometers, interior to the orbit of Mercury) from the Sun on January 13th, and ‘may’ top -1st magnitude or brighter. At magnitude +4 in late December, Comet G3 ATLAS could become a fine object low in the dawn sky for southern hemisphere observers… if (a big ‘if) it holds together and performs as expected. The comet actually produced an outburst over the first weekend of 2025, jumping from magnitude +4 to +1 (a sixteen-fold increase in brightness in a few short days). This could be a harbinger for good (or bad) things to come shortly. “The comet has had an outburst in the last few days,” Nicolas Lefaudeux told Universe Today. “If the outburst is linked to disintegration, there would probably be nothing to see after perihelion. If the outburst is linked to new active areas or splitting of a large nucleus, the display could be much better than in the simulations.” The prospects for the tail of Comet G3 ATLAS, around perihelion. Credit: Nicolas Lefaudeux A recent International Astronomical Union Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams message suggests an optimistic peak of -3rd magnitude near perihelion post outburst, ‘if’ the comet holds together. Comet G3 ATLAS low at dawn versus Mercury on January 11th. Credit: Starry Night. The Discovery The comet was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey as a +19th magnitude object in the southern hemisphere constellation Apus the Bee on the night of April 5th, 2024. The orbital path for Comet G3 ATLAS through the inner solar system. Credit: NASA/JPL The orbital period for this one is around 160,000 years. It’s unclear if Comet G3 ATLAS is a first-time visitor to the inner solar system, or a new denizen coming from the distant Oort Cloud. The last time the comet swung by the inner solar system (assuming it has done so in the past), wearing clothing was the hot new thing among our homo sapiens ancestors. Comet G3 ATLAS from January 2nd. Credit: iTelescope/Tara Prystavski. Comet G3 at Perihelion: Perish or Prosper? Prospects for seeing this comet will be tricky. Unlike last year’s Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS which unfurled a magnificent tail for its evening apparition, G3 ATLAS will be a timid one both before and after perihelion, as it departs our solar neighborhood hugging the southern horizon in the dusk sky. Comet G3 ATLAS, post perihelion on January 15th at dusk. Credit: Starry Night. A daytime comet could be in the offing if G3 ATLAS over-performs at perihelion… but it will be a challenging view, very near the Sun. Be sure to block the dangerous glare of the Sun fully out of view behind a building or structure if you attempt to spot the comet in daylight. Like A3 T-ATLAS, the joint NASA/ESA SOHO observatory will see the comet near perihelion crossing through its LASCO C3 viewer. Comet G3 ATLAS versus SOHO through the month of January. Credit: Starry Night. Best Bets For Comet G3 ATLAS Perihelion on Monday, January 13th, 2025 will see the comet just four degrees from the Sun. The comet also makes its closest approach to Earth at 0.938 AU distant on the same date. The comet ‘could’ reach -4th magnitude (about as bright as Venus) around the same time… if it manages to hold together at perihelion. Here’s a recent remote telescope image of the comet taken from late December by Nick James: Comet G3 ATLAS from December 15th. Credit: Nick James/BAA Comet Section/iTelescope. Comet G3 ATLAS has been elusive thus far. The comet has been bashful, skimming just five degrees above the dawn horizon leading up to perihelion in early January for northern hemisphere observers. The comet reemerges low to the west after dusk, but again, folks up north only get a very brief view 5-10 degrees above the horizon at dusk, as the comet runs parallel with the horizon southward. As usually seems to be the case with comets, the southern hemisphere gets the better view. Here’s a blow-by-blow of what to expect in the coming months from the comet. (Note that ‘passes near,’ denotes a conjunction of a degree or less): January 6-Near the Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8) 7-Near the globular cluster (Messier 28) 8-Crosses the ecliptic plane northward 11-Enters SOHO LASCO C3 view 13-At perihelion, less than 5 degrees from the Sun 14-Crosses into the constellation Capricornus 15-Exits SOHO LASCO C3 view, and crosses the ecliptic plane southward 21-Nicks the corner of the constellation Microscopium 22-Crosses into the constellation Piscis Austrinus The light curve for comet G3 ATLAS. Adapted from Seichii Yoshida’s Weekly Information About Bright Comets. February 1-May drop back down below +6th magnitude 6-Crosses into the constellation Grus 21-Nicks the corner of the constellation Sculptor 25-Crosses into the constellation Phoenix March March 1st: May drop back down below +10th magnitude. Observing and imaging the comet will be challenging, owing to two main factors: first, it will never really leave the low-contrast, twilight sky for northern hemisphere observers. Second, said quoted magnitude for a comet gets ‘smeared out’ over its apparent surface area, knocking the comet’s apparent brightness down a notch or two. We can hope that Comet G3 ATLAS is an over-performer in this regard. My strategy is to find high ground to observe from and the lowest, flattest horizon (like, say, the ocean as seen from a beach) that you can find, and sweep the horizon at low power with binoculars for the fuzzball of a comet. Good luck and clear skies on this, the first comet quest of 2025. The post Will Comet G3 ATLAS Perform at Perihelion? appeared first on Universe Today.

Janitor's "Faithfully" cover dubbed the best of what "America's Got Talent' stands for

Listen, “America’s Got Talent” is a competition show with a sizable grand prize. So we can expect to see performers at the top of their game—who have painstakingly dedicated themselves to their craft, who might have even already gone viral for their god given gifts—clamoring to make it to the top. But every so often, average, everyday folks show up to finally share those talents that otherwise went without a spotlight, and in doing so we are poignantly reminded that magic is hiding everywhere. Without a doubt, Richard Goodall, the singing janitor from Indiana, fits that bill. With a quiet, humble personality that belies a rockstar voice, Goodall has absolutely wowed “AGT” audiences and judges alike with his showstopping covers of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," the Michael Bolton's "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" and Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger." Iconic rock classics, and Goodall effortlessly nails them all. And just when you think he couldn’t possibly outdo himself, Goodall sings“Faithfully,” another Journey hit, as for his performance in the finals. And just like with any unforgettable act, Goodall not only shows off incredible skills, but took the audience on an emotional voyage. Watch: - YouTube www.youtube.com After the raucous applause died down, judges were quick to shower Goodall with praises, sharing how much they hoped this unassuming janitor would win big. "Richard, I have been faithfully your biggest fan since the very, very first day we met, all the way through this competition,” said Hiedi Klum. “I want you to win this so bad, Richard!”"I will make a prediction right now: I think you just sang yourself $1 million," Howie Mandel declared, while Simon Cowell added, "We all need a hero right now, and you are our hero."Down in the Youtube comments, online viewers shared the same sentiment, calling Goodall the best of what “AGT” stands for. “This is what AGT should be, regular every-day people with talent who don’t typically get to perform on a stage like this.”“He sings with his heart. He’s an inspiration. Such a humble human being. He deserves to win this. He got all my votes!”“Richard doesn't need to win, WE need him to win. Not only America, but the entire world. What he represents is BIG for every single person.”“Richard has stayed true to himself. He hasn’t 'changed' because of all the attention. He's still a humble, quiet, hard working man with an amazing gift. His voice, to me, is like liquid gold. I genuinely hope Richard wins this year as he deserves it all. Good luck and keep true to yourself Richard Goodall.”“Richard it's me, your disabled navy veteran fan that has been following your journey supporting you from day one of you auditioning for AGT 2024. I have no doubt that you will be the WINNER of AGT 2024…You gave all the people out here the hope and inspiration to ‘Don't Stop Believin’’ in our dreams, to use that ‘EYE of The Tiger’ to see and envision their dreams to ‘Faithfully’ make them come true by you yourself making your dream come true. America and the world is behind you, supporting you all the way along this magical singing journey to becoming a legend in the making.”“Richard Goodall is what we all need right now. He is a true hero for everyone. He is a hard working humble man who can sing with all his heart and soul. His dream is coming true. He truly deserves it.”There you have it, everyone. No matter who gets that coveted prize, Goodall has won in a very profound way. This article originally appeared last year.

Former Uber employee ranks Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze, prompting map app debate

Those of us of a certain age remember asking for directions and keeping two-inch thick road atlases in our cars to find our way around. Then with the internet came the miracle of Mapquest, followed by the how-did-we-ever-live-without-this GPS systems you could attach to your dashboard. Then smartphones kicked the road trip game up a notch with map apps that not only give up step-by-step directions but also real-time traffic conditions and the ability to find a gas station or restaurant with gluten-free options along your route. Even those of us who grew up with paper maps struggle to recall how we ever got anywhere before Google Maps. Now we're so deep into the map app era that we're past the wow stage and into the nit-picky stage. It's no longer good enough to have a handheld computer tell us how to get someplace in real time. Now we have expectations, preferences, opinions and complaints. We also have data and anecdotes with which to compare different apps and discuss which ones do what best. And hoo boy do people have thoughts on that front. Former Uber employee Flo Crivello shared some info on X about the analysis they did with three of the most popular map apps—Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze—using a dataset with millions of trips. The big winner? Apple Maps. — (@) Google came in second, and Waze was a distant third (worst "by far")."The research also included which apps people *thought* was worse, and the order came in the exact opposite order," Crivello shared. "We understood why Apple Maps got a bad rap given how bad it was at launch — it rapidly got better, but the brand stuck. Waze was more of a mystery, and we ended up realizing that people thought its routes were best because it was exposing them to so much info on traffic, construction, police presence etc… Everyone thinks they want a minimalist UI, but in practice, when they see all this info, they subconsciously conclude 'wow, these guys really have their sh*t together' — even when the routes were actually the worst ones."Crivello said the results "may be shocking," presumably because Apple Maps started with the worst reputation. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook famously apologized for Apple Maps in 2012 and recommended people use Google Maps instead. However, in the years since, Apple Maps has redeemed itself while Google Maps has lost a bit of its initial luster. Then Waze came along, which people in cities with variable traffic touted as more accurate for timing and real-time updates, becoming some people's favorite. But according to his data eight years ago, Apple was the winner. Do those results still hold? Some people in the replies said Google Maps was the best, hands down, while other said they preferred Apple or Waze.It might depend on where you live and what you look for in a map app (and whether you even have access to Apple Maps). Discussions about these apps abound, with some common threads throughout. Many people agree that the U.S. is where Apple Maps shines, but Google Maps works better abroad. Apple Maps offers more natural navigation directions, such as "Not at this stop sign, but at the next one, turn right," instead of Google Maps' assumption that everyone knows how far 300 feet is. Google maps has great searchability and is easier to check reviews of places compared to Apple Maps. So opinions might vary on "best" depending on what you're using it for.Waze has loyal users and people who love to joke about where it reroutes you when there's traffic. — (@) These are not the only three map apps available, either. People who travel internationally and use public transportation seem partial to the CityMapper app, which makes finding train and bus routes simple with a user-friendly interface, so again, a lot depends on why you're using the app in the first place. As far as popularity goes, Google Maps boasts a whopping 1 billion monthly users. While Apple Maps usage doesn't have any hard numbers, there is data that shows younger generations are partial to iPhones, on which Apple Maps is a native app, so its usage may be growing. What's your experience? Which map app do you prefer? This article originally appeared last year.

Neighbors surprise their dogs by building tiny door in fence so their dogs could have playdates

With as social as dogs are it's not surprising that they can form close bonds with other pets, even if those pets don't live in their home. A dog can have a best bud at doggy daycare, a local dog park or in their own backyard, well...sort of. Dogs that share a fence because their humans live next door to each other can become fast friends. It's the dog they see every day, they know their smell, their bark and may even sneak toys under the fence to share. The four-legged fur balls are creative when it comes to finding ways to play with other dogs that they can't physically reach. But eventually the lack of physical connection gets a little frustrating and since dogs don't have thumbs or access to tools, they rely on their humans to set up playdates. This is what happened when two neighbors realized their dogs were the very best of friends and would not stop trying to bust out of their shared wooden fence for some playtime. The neighbors shared their dogs' shenanigans on their respective social media pages showing how their dogs were desperate to be playmates. One of the dogs can be seen dramatically lays on the ground with half of its head and a singular paw pushed under the fence to look at his friend in the most pitiful way possible. Dog Show GIF by Westminster Kennel Club Giphy The humans behind the accounts fritz_the_emotional_dog and fun_with_grump shared their adorable surprise for their clearly deprived dogs (insert heavy sarcasm) with Upworthy. In the video complete with Celine Dion singing "All by Myself" in the background, you see the dogs continuously trying to get to each other. Shortly after a few clips showing the canine friends' antics, the video cuts to a small door built into the shared wooden fence. When one of the owners opens the new door, the dogs explode with excitement at the realization that they can finally get to each other. The duo follow each other through the door running and playing from yard to yard while their owners speak in high pitched squeals as they watch the dogs play. People cannot get enough of the sweet gesture the owners did for the two pups. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Upworthy (@upworthy)One person writes, "This is by far the nicest thing I’ve ever seen . Total love absolutely big love. These neighbours are brilliant to do this for their dogs … well done!!!"Another says, "This is just the most beautiful thing you guys did for those 2. love it.""Omg this is just wonderful....how happy they both are xx," a commenter shares. vriendjes joho GIF by Jongehonden Giphy "My neighbor did this for our dog. I would sometimes come home from work. I would hear my dog barking as I was unlocking the front door but it would be silent in my house. Then I would realize the neighbors had opened the fence hatch (that they made) and my dog was barking from next doors living room window," someone else recounts. The two dogs still continue their playdates via the tiny door in the fence and you can follow along with them on their owners' TikTok pages, fritz_the_emotional_dog and fun_with_grump.
