Sharon Osbourne recalls introducing Dio to Sabbath members

The Ozzy Osbourne wife and manager Sharon Osbourne had contact with Black Sabbath very early on because her father Don Arden was their manager for a long time. When the group decided to fire Ozzy back in the late 70s due to his behavior and substance abuse, she curiously was the one who suggested to Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward the singer Ronnie James Dio. A previous member of Elf and Rainbow, Dio joined the band in 1979 and was part of the group until 1982, when he left, returning from 1991 to 1992 and then from 2006 to 2010 (As Heaven & Hell). Sharon recalled this story in an interview with Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar). Sharon Osbourne recalls introducing Dio to Sabbath members "It was when the band had decided, definitely, that Ozzy had to go. And Tony (Iommi) said to me, 'Who do you think I could get for a singer?' And I said, 'I know this guy, Ronnie Dio.' So, I introduced them. They got on really well, because Ronnie was a very social guy, too, very easy to talk to." "And they all hit it off, which was great. And they got rid of Ozzy, which was not great for Ozzy, because he didn't have any confidence in himself. He thought he was, like, over. Embarrassed to go back home to see his wife and kids, embarrassed to tell them," Sharon Osbourne said. With Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Black Sabbath recorded the albums: "Heaven & Hell" (1980), "Mob Rules" (1981), "Dehumanizer" (1992) and "The Devil You Know" (2009 - As Heaven & Hell). The vocalist died at the age of 67 back in May 16, 2010, a victim of stomach cancer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWAhd4KkVUU&pp=ygUdaGVhdmVuIGFuZCBoZWxsIGJsYWNrIHNhYmJhdGg%3DThe post Sharon Osbourne recalls introducing Dio to Sabbath members appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Gene Simmons explains why Kiss is different from AC/DC and Metallica

Kiss is one of the best-selling bands of all time, with an estimated amount of more than 100 million records sold worldwide. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were the only two original members of the band who were part of the group during their entire existence, from 1973 to 2023. The group's songwriting and sound changed a lot over the decades and in an interview with Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar), he explained why Kiss is different from bands like AC/DC and Metallica. Gene Simmons explains why Kiss is different from AC/DC and Metallica "I could argue the AC/DC or Metallica idea, which is, you stay true to your DNA. Well, it's an argument that works well for them. And Iron Maiden. We didn't have a choice because we gave in. There were those first records that had, you know, sort of Chuck Berry crossed with this and that: a little Beatles, a little Motown, a little this, a little that. Whatever that thing was, the identity, the fingerprint, was diluted as members within the band started to veer from the band." "There are other bands that have stayed true to who they are and have survived and become bigger. By the way, I don't do that. I go, 'That's their journey. This is ours. I prefer to make dollars. The only thing I care about is a brand new five year old who experiences Kiss or the imagery, even if it's not the music, just somehow gets seduced and beguiled by that," Gene Simmons said. Kiss played the final show of their career in 2023, at the Madison Square Garden. They final line-up had the guitarist Tommy Thayer and the drummer Eric Singer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ksZ2j8NSqI&pp=ygUJa2lzcyAyMDIzThe post Gene Simmons explains why Kiss is different from AC/DC and Metallica appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Heart’s Nancy Wilson says is embarrassing to be American now

Donald Trump's second term started just a few months ago, and there have been many radical changes in the United States and around the world. Like many other countries, the U.S. has been divided for almost a decade, and political hatred has increased, separating families and friends. Not many people agree with that, nor with the actions and attitude of the president. One of them is Heart co-founder and guitarist Nancy Wilson. In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, she recalled that a few decades ago, it was embarrassing to be American due to the Vietnam War, but in her opinion, it is now even more embarrassing. "We were kind of embarrassed at that time to call ourselves American because of the dirty politics of the Vietnam War. To be as subtle as possible, it's more embarrassing (to be American) now. (...) (Barracuda) is even more relevant in the salacious billionaire culture with the grab-them-by-the-pussy mentality. These songs will be there long after we are gone.” "I think for women in the culture the pendulum will come back again, and there'll be another renaissance in the arts to push back against the oppression of the cranky old rich white guys. I hope I am alive to see that next revolution," Nancy Wilson said. Next Heart tour dates March 24 - Winnipeg, MB - Canada Life Centre 26 - Milwaukee, WI - Fiserv Forum 28 - Knoxville, TN - Thompson-Boling Arena 29 - Charleston, WV - Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center 31 - Buffalo, NY - KeyBank Center April 2 - Montreal, QC - Bell Centre 4 - Ottawa, ON - Canadian Tire Centre 5 - Quebec, QC - Videotron Centre 10 - Toronto, ON - Coca-Cola Coliseum 12 - Mashantucket, CT - Foxwoods Resort Casino 13 - Boston, MA - Agganis Arena 16 - New York, NY - Radio City Music Hall May 31 - Atlantic City, NJ - Hard Rock - Mark G Etess Arena June 1 - Vienna, VA - Wolf Trap 3 - Lexington, KY - Rupp Arena 4 - Detroit, MI - Fox Theatre 6 - Highland Park, IL - Ravinia Festival 7 - Hinckley, MN - Grand Casino Hinckley Amphitheater 10 - Evansville, IN - Ford Center 12 - St. Louis, MO - The Fabulous Fox 14 - Grand Prairie, TX - Texas Trust CU Theatre 15 - Cedar Park, TX - H-E-B Center at Cedar Park 17 - Sugar Land, TX - Smart Financial Centre 18 - Baton Rouge, LA - Raising Cane's River Center 20 - Birmingham, AL - Legacy Arena at the BJCC 22 - N. The 2 Country singers that Billy Gibbons chose as the best of all time

Billy Gibbons started his musical career in 1967, joining The Moving Sidewalks, a band that had the chance to tour with Jimi Hendrix. Two years later, he formed the supergroup power trio ZZ Top alongside the bassist Dusty Hill and the drummer Frank Beard. Their line-up was the same for 51 years, until Hill's death in 2022. Gibbons is often listed as one of the greatest guitarists of all time and also as one of the most influential Blues Rock artists from the past decades. Although Blues and Rock are the kind of music he plays, he also likes other music genres, including Country music. He once even mentioned two players of that genre as some of the greatest singers of all time. The 2 Country singers that Billy Gibbons chose as the best of all time  Johnny Cash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VCQfyqw4M8&pp=ygUhwqBKb2hubnkgQ2FzaCBpIHdpdG5lc3NlZCBhIGNyaW1l The first one is Johnny Cash, who Gibbons placed in the position number 18 of the 19 best singers of all time list he did for Rolling Stone back in 2008. He was only in front of Bill Medley and behind artists like Paul Di'Anno (That's right, the Iron Maiden singer), Robert Plant, Sammy Hagar and Sheryl Crow. Curiously, Gibbons has been a fan of Johnny Cash since he was young, the first record he ever bought was by the Country musician. “Get Rhythm, by Johnny Cash, when I was five,” Billy Gibbons told Elmore Magazine. That single was first released as the b-side of  “I Walk The Line” in 1956. A few decades later, in 1995, Gibbons had the chance to write a song for Cash called "I Witnessed a Crime". During a Q&A session in 2017, he recalled how he first met Johnny face to face. "Johnny Cash and I met quite by a planned surprise arranged by our pal, producer Rick Rubin. Rick was in the process of producing one of his the great return to the studio albums. (He) asked if I would write a special song aimed directly with Johnny Cash in mind." "Johnny heard the song and immediately set about working up an arrangement which was on hand during our “surprise” encounter. The added bonus appeared when Johnny’s lovely and talented bride, June Carter Cash also made the showing to make for a warm and lively gathering resulting in an impromptu studio recording session delivering a memorable interpretation of the song created especially for Johnny. The entire affair remains a standout! Needless to say, a moment not soon forgotten. The song, “I Witnessed A Crime” sometimes appears on YouTube. Check it out…!" Hank Williams https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WXYjm74WFI&pp=ygUNaGFuayB3aWxsaWFtcw%3D%3D The other Country music artist that Billy Gibbons said was one of the best singers of all time was Hank Williams. He placed the musician in the position number 15 on the Rolling Stone list. He was in front of Johnny Cash and other artists like Howlin' Wolf, James Brown, and Bill Medley. Gibbons didn't have the chance to meet Williams because the musician died in 1953 at the age of 29. But he is a good friend of his grandson Hank Williams III, who is also a musician. Talking about him in an interview with Classic Rock in 2022, the ZZ Top frontman "He’s another talent. He’s frighteningly the ghost of his grandfather [Hank Williams]. Good grief. He sounds like his grandad and he’s a living example to back up the idea of genetics skipping a generation. His old man [Hank Williams Jr] is really quite different from his dad. But come around to the generation after and it returns right to his granddad. He’s a great entertainer himself as well. He’s torn between keeping on the tradition and his real passion, which is grindcore to the end. That’s his true love. I was lucky enough to work with the New Orleans drummer Joe Fazzio, who holds down a spot with Hank and also played with Superjoint Ritual. He was telling me that they’d go out as a double bill, and Hank III would give his audience fair warning that the first half of the show would be to the delight of those who liked country music. Then he’d say: “We’re gonna take a small break now. Those who can’t take it better leave the building, cos we’re going to get real heavy.”The post The 2 Country singers that Billy Gibbons chose as the best of all time appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
