Congress is finally taking the dystopian website traffic cop NewsGuard to task for its years-long vendetta against right-leaning media. On Thursday, the House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into NewsGuard over its assault on free speech and its taxpayer-funded contracts with the federal government. In a letter to NewsGuard CEOs Steven Brill and Gordon Crovitz, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) requested the submission of documents related to the firm's ties to the federal government as a potential “non-transparent agent of censorship campaigns.” This congressional probe follows a lawsuit filed by The Daily Wire and The Federalist — in conjunction with the State of Texas — against the federal government for awarding nearly $750,000 of taxpayer money to NewsGuard in exchange for licensing its data.Comer stated that the investigation will also examine NewsGuard’s abysmally poor adherence to its own policies designed to “ guard against appearances of bias” and “how it tries to avoid and manage potential conflicts of interest arising from its investors and other influences.” Moreover, per Comer: “One concerned journalist expressed fear that NewsGuard’s activities are an extension of federal efforts—since struck down by courts—to coerce social media companies and to ‘destroy the financial survival of disfavored outlets…” The congressional investigation will also scrutinize NewsGuard’s “actions that may have the impact of delegitimizing factually accurate information,” Comer added. Comer's six-page letter noted that several NewsGuard employees have engaged in political activities, potentially violating the firm’s policies against such behavior. The evidence presented by Comer was striking. On Twitter, NewsGuard Senior Advisor Richard Sambrook reportedly reposted social media content accusing the British Conservative Party of somehow worsening poverty rates in the U.K.  Contributing Analyst Melissa Fares also reportedly shared a New York Times front-page image displaying a large "GUILTY" sign after a Manhattan jury found former President Donald Trump guilty of falsifying business records. Comer concluded that “the Committee seeks to make an independent determination about whether NewsGuard’s intervention on protected speech has been in any way sponsored by a federal, state, local, or foreign government.” MRC Free Speech America has repeatedly exposed NewsGuard’s inherent bias against right-leaning outlets critical of the Biden administration and who don’t comport with leftist narratives. According to the latest MRC study, NewsGuard awarded left-leaning sites an average rating of 91 out of 100 on a 0-100 scale, while right-leaning outlets received a ridiculous, negative average rating of only 65 out of 100.   The founder of a political campaign of disaffected former Democrats revealed the shocking extent of Facebook’s crackdown on the group in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 protest. Bradon Straka, the founder of the WalkAway campaign, testified during a June 9 Georgia rally convened by former Democrat-turned-Republican State Rep. Mesha Mainor. Straka discussed how in the aftermath of Jan. 6, his group along with all of its administrators were systematically purged by the social media company and had years of content, much of it of sentimental value, scrubbed with no explanation or hope of appeal. “On the morning of January 8, 2021, every member of my team woke up to find that our Facebook accounts had been deleted,” Straka testified. “Along with them, the WalkAway campaign group, now over half a million members, was gone. The WalkAway Foundation business page was gone.” According to Straka, Facebook also targeted the personal accounts of people associated with WalkAway including people who simply contracted with WalkAway but were unaffiliated politically. “And to add to our shock, the personal and business accounts of every administrator for the WalkAway group were permanently deleted,” Straka said. “In other words, even people who were non-political but did online marketing or merch management for a living on social media and, for whom, we just happened to be one of their clients, the fact that their accounts had been added as admins to the WalkAway campaign group resulted in all of them losing their personal and business accounts, preventing them from being able to do business with any other clients using Facebook.” Georgia Hearing on #WalkAway Banning, Targeting, & Censorship https://t.co/bAvahr55SG — #WalkAway Campaign (@RealWalkAway) June 14, 2024 To pour salt in the wound, Facebook also deleted all of the content stored on the accounts and provided no opportunity for group members to recover what represented years of hard work. Straka intimated at the hearing that the purged content represented a $500,000 investment by WalkAway and two and a half years of hard work. Also included were many personal memories, such as pictures of Straka and his grandmother, now deceased.  Straka also stated that these actions directly contravened Facebook’s own policies. “According to Facebook’s terms of service, users owned the content and information we posted on Facebook, and yet, we were given no opportunity to speak to anybody who works at Facebook to request copies of the pictures, videos, posts and data they disabled without any explanation,” Straka related. Straka ended his testimony with a call for accountability for Big Tech companies, who he argued have a disproportionate influence in 2024 to destroy people’s lives and businesses for seemingly flippant or self-contradictory reasons. He also demanded that the WalkAway account be reinstated and gain restored access to the purged content.  “Facebook, you need to reverse this decision and moving forward, Big Tech companies like Facebook must be made to clearly explain with specificity why accounts are suspended or banned along with providing evidence of the violation,” Straka said. “And every user deserves to have these decisions reviewed and reversed." This proposal mirrors several other laws that are already in effect. Both Florida and Texas have passed laws directing social media companies to furnish specific reasons for bans and publish the algorithm used to prioritize or demote content. NetChoice, an association of major online businesses, has challenged the constitutionality of the laws in Moody v. NetChoice and NetChoice v. Paxton. The Supreme Court is set to publish its rulings on both cases later today. Conservatives are under attack. Disney's "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte" introduced a new interpretation of the Force, changing key elements of the core plotline after nearly 50 years.In the third episode of the series, a coven of witches led by what are assumed to be lesbians reveal that they are able to control the Force in order to create life.The show has a flashback to when a pair of twin witches (Osha and Mae) were children, being informed by their mother that their witch coven believes in something called the Thread."All living things are connected by the same Thread. A Thread woven through all of existence. Some call it a Force and claim to use it. But we know the Thread is not a power you wield," the witch said, per That Park Place. "Pull the Thread. Change everything. It ties you to your destiny. It binds you to others," the witch, named Mother Aniseya, informed the children.This came as a shock to "Star Wars" fans who knew the Force the way it had always been interpreted, as an energy field created by all living things.'I believe the show is trying to say that like religion in the world today, the Force can be interpreted differently from group to group.'The witch then talks about performing a ceremony that has not been done since their "exile," which led to them being "hunted, persecuted, [and] forced into hiding."The ceremony refers to the immaculate conception of the twins. The speech is interrupted by Jedi who demand that the twins be tested to find out if they are Jedi themselves. Then, a woman named Coral who is assumed to be the lesbian lover of Aniseya, declares that she "did not bring the girls into this world so that would lose them to a bunch of deranged monks.""It is not your decision. It is mine. And I've made it," Aniseya demands."I carried them," Coral replies."I created them," Aniseya argues.Alan Ng, who first broke the news after seeing an advance copy of the episode, felt the storyline was an attempt to claim that the differing views of the Force are much like religious interpretations."I believe the show is trying to say that like religion in the world today, the Force can be interpreted differently from group to group, tribe to tribe," he told Blaze News. "In the case of the witches, they believe in a thread that binds everyone together and [is] made more powerful in groups, thus 'The power of one. The power of two. The power of many,'" he quoted."The witches learned to use the thread to create an immaculate conception in Osha and Mae, and they fear the Jedi will find out how they did it and go kill the witches."As for the motherly characters being lesbians, Ng said it was "heavily implied" by the way the "two mothers" interact.Writer John F. Trent agreed with the characterization that they are lesbians."Acolyte" showrunner Leslye Headland, a lesbian herself, recently joked with series star Amandla Stenberg about how gay "Star Wars" actually is.During an interview with the Wrap, Stenberg said she thought the franchise "is so gay already.""I mean have you seen the [outfits]? We'd be like 'Look how gay this is' and send each other reference photos," she laughed."Are you telling me, with a straight face, that C-3PO is straight?" A pickup truck driver was caught on cellphone video doing a burnout on a rainbow Pride crosswalk in Huntington, West Virginia, earlier this week, WOWK-TV reported.The station said Wednesday's incident occurred at the intersection of 4th Avenue and 10th Street; that crosswalk — along with a rainbow gemstone — was painted last weekend.'It’s not a protest; it's bullcrap. The driver of the truck revved the engine, left what appears to be a single tire track over at least one of the crosswalk bars, and created a huge exhaust cloud in the process.Huntington Police Chief Phil Watkins told WOWK that the department knows about the video and is investigating.“Huntington Pride, a nonprofit organization, raised funds throughout the community to pay for the paint and hire the artist. However, the city will coordinate with Huntington Pride on any needed touch-ups of the art installation in the future," City of Huntington Communications Director Bryan Chambers told the station.Ally Layman, president of Huntington Pride, told WCHS-TV that she is "not surprised. Typically folks within our community are bullied. I've been bullied since high school, so it’s not shocking.”Layman also is a city council member and added to WCHS that "the jewel is every facet of every color, of every texture, or every component that combines our entire community, not just the LGBT community, but our community as a whole. Appalachians are resilient just like this jewel."Resident Justin Murdock added to WCHS that "a lot of these people making these threats and doing these things, they don’t even go here, they’re from out of town. Disney-Pixar animated movie "Inside Out 2" was brave to discuss a teen's anxiety and puberty process, director Kelsey Mann said.According to a recent interview, Mann said that he knew he would need to come up with new emotions to add to the sequel about the internal struggle of a child.In the first film, emotions like joy, sadness, fear, anger, and disgust all took the form of characters inside the mind of a child named Riley in order to help her navigate her feelings and experiences.For the sequel and his directorial debut, Mann decided to add characters that represented anxiety, envy, ennui, and embarrassment.'A man who finds himself impassioned by adolescence is a man that should steer clear of children and creating children's content.'"I know you're going through a lot at that age. And a lot of the time you think it's only you that's going through it, that no one else is going through it. I knew that was a big opportunity with this movie," he told VarietyMann said that he originally pitched the idea to Pixar's chief creative officer Pete Docter, but wasn't sure if the studio would make a film of such a nature. Fortunately for Mann, the executive "understood what [he] wanted to do from the very beginning."With a focus on anxiety, adolescence, and the main character becoming a teenager and going through puberty, Mann claimed that the studio was being very courageous in putting the movie out."I think it’s incredibly brave and bold what we're able to put out into the world."The filmmaker also noted that he wished he had "a movie like this" when he was growing up.Entertainment writer Natasha Biase saw the director's approach differently."A man who finds himself impassioned by adolescence is a man that should steer clear of children and creating children's content," she told Blaze News. "It's one thing to care about and advocate for a child's well-being, but being as invested as he is is creepy."According to Deadline, the movie is expected to be a big hit for Disney, which is sorely needed given the studio's recent struggles.Disney is riding high off of a stellar opening and domestic performance by "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," which took in almost $60 million in its first weekend. At the same time though, Disney+ has struggled to please audiences with an original series, resulting in CEO Bob Iger pushing the studio to increasingly focus on remakes and sequels, hence "Inside Out 2."The animated film is apparently trending with teen girls and moms, with a bounty of outlets predicting it to be the biggest opening of 2024.
