FACT CHECK: Did The Economist Remove The Palestinian Flag From Its Recent Cover Highlighting Bangladesh?

A post shared on X claims The Economist removed the Palestinian flag from its recent cover highlighting Bangladesh. “The Economist” photoshopped the Palestinian flag out of the image in Bangladesh, literally making heavy idiots out of their loyal readers. Shame on them; they are fighting the State of Palestine by all intellectual standards. ?? ?️ […]

Little Red Riding Hood? YOUNG FEMALE & CANINE HUMANOID Manifest in Brooklyn, NY Bedroom!

A Brooklyn, New York experiencer had a 'vision' or possible encounter with a girl and a canine/human hybrid creature, not unlike the Little Red Riding Hood tale. What did they observe?I received the following account:"One of my earliest memories, one that has always stood out clearer than most of the most recent memories I have, is when I was about four or five years old and I was visited by two beings when living in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York.I was in bed, awake and it was nighttime. I remember feeling something, like a tingle of emotion from the window in my room. It was the only window and outside of it was one of those metal fire escapes you would commonly find on buildings in the late 1970s. When I got up to see what I was sensing, and I remember the feeling very clearly, I saw two beings outside of the window, sitting or crouching out on the fire escape, looking in at me. It was the feeling you have inside your belly, like butterflies, when you are on your way to see very close friends, or if you are about to see your blind date for the first time after weeks or months of becoming close by just writing to each other. It was a good feeling that was reaching out to me as if calling me.I had a night light in the room and I was able to see them clearly as I approached them. On my left, outside of the window was a girl with large eyes and skin that almost glowed, like a pearl under the right lights that make it seem to glow. She was wearing a large red hood on her head that had some kind of yellow or golden writing or runes along the edge of the hood that edged close to her face and down her neck. I couldn’t see any hair since her hood was large and deep and her face barely poked out. She was calm and her eyes were so full of caring, love, and calm.On my right, her left was what I could only understand at the time as being a dog, but its features were canine and human, like a dog person and there was soft emotion in the eyes, even though the face was fairly viscous looking. Its fur was dark and I could not tell the color, but I noticed a single braid coming down from the left side of its head, starting at the ear, and running down below the window sill. They did not speak, but I could feel such a powerful sense of familiarity with them as if I had known them as my own family. As I approached them, wanting to go with them, I began to feel another emotion that slowly crept in. This feeling was uncomfortable and sad, as if my mommy and daddy were going away and I did not want them to go. I felt sadness and I struggled against it because I wanted to go with them, but they were trying to push me away gently. After another short moment, I don’t know how long, I suddenly felt fear. It was not my own, but it was projected into me, like when a loved one suddenly lashes out at you and you can’t understand why. I suddenly became afraid of them as the image of, as strange as it may sound, Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf was projected into my mind. I can be honest that as a child I never found that story scary at all. Once I felt this sudden fear, I turned and ran screaming. It was as if they were telling me goodbye, a difficult goodbye, but I felt it clearly. Since then, during my entire life, I have felt empty and longing for them. Growing up, before I learned anything about E.T.s or anything from space, I would always look up at the night sky and when I saw a light moving, I would feel such a deep feeling of expectation, only to have it dashed when it was only an airplane passing overhead. It was as if I were left at the bus stop to wait for someone, and every time headlights came down the road, I got excited, ready to go home, only to have a car come by that was not my ride. I have had a few experiences along the way to make things seem even stranger until I grew older and learned more.I have sketched out a pic of what I remember and I will try to attach it with this message. I heard your interview regarding the Skinwalkers and I felt I should share this story with you, even if it falls into the category of your “standard” story that you may get from many people. I have been yearning to have a regression for many, many years to resolve many issues in this current lifetime. I thank you for what you do." MCNOTE: I have not talked to the writer, but I would not be surprised if a hypnotic regression would uncover additional encounters with other beings, either corporeal or immaterial. Was this incident a thought form manifestation of some type? It's possible, though, that I could assume that there was an intelligence associated with this particular event. I also believe that many assumed alien encounters and abductions are spontaneously manifested by witnesses, not much different than the poltergeist phenomenon. I'd be interested in reading your thoughts. Lon**********PHANTOMS & MONSTERS VIDEO LIBRARYPOLL: WHAT DO YOU THINK? 'BLACK-FACED' OLD WOMAN, Possible 'SKINWALKER,' Encountered on Navajo Reservation

'BLACK-FACED' OLD WOMAN, Possible 'SKINWALKER,' Encountered on Navajo Reservation

A Navajo witness was driving on the reservation in Arizona when they encountered, on numerous occasions, the same old woman along the way. Was the old woman a shapeshifting witch or a spirit?I received the following account:"Hello. I believe I once witnessed a shape-shifting witch! My older brother, older sister, and I were going home for the weekend. We were coming in from Phoenix, Arizona. We had to leave pretty late. It usually takes us 5 hours to get home, which is in Low Mountain near Pinon, AZ. We drove toward Keams Canyon highway and took a certain dirt road that would take us straight to Low Mountain. Before we reached the dirt road we noticed a very old lady walking on the side of the highway with a cane at 2 o'clock in the morning! She had her scarf around her head, a long black jacket, and wearing a green dress. We did not think anything of it but thought it was weird that she was walking late at night on a highway. The reservation is really dark at night and there is hardly anyone driving on the roads. We eventually turned on the dirt road.A mile away from the highway we noticed the same old lady walking on the side of the dirt road with her cane. I freaked out! I started crying because we knew that it was the same lady 15 miles back. My brother stepped on the gas and started driving faster. He gave us some medicine to protect us from harm. We eventually got to a highway that took us to Chinle, Low Mountain, or Pinon. We passed the first bridge and we noticed that the old lady was sitting on the highway with her head down waving the cane in the air. Before we could pass her the car just shut down and wouldn't start. The old lady stood up facing the opposite way from us, so we wouldn't see her face and walked across the other side of the road. She turned her head to face us and her face was painted all black. She kept walking and eventually disappeared in the distance. My brother turned the ignition and the car started!! It scared the hell outta me! I was crying so bad that I never wanted to drive through the road again. When we got home we told my parents about it. My Dad said that there was an old couple that lived between the two highways that did bad medicine on people. He also said that her husband had passed on not long ago and that she walks that road every now and then. They had two kids; one of them passed away at a very young age with an unknown cause of death and the other one drinks and huffs. We ended up driving back the longer way which was taking the highway to the junction road and going toward Ganado. It was very real and very scary." PRETTY IN PINK: Walking to the Prom

PRETTY IN PINK: Walking to the Prom

A former police officer relates an encounter told to him by a fellow policeman. He saw a girl dressed in a pink prom dress walking along the road, He gave her a ride. Then things get weird.I received the following account:"Hi, Lon. I really enjoy your blog but honestly, it scares the hell out of me sometimes. I wanted to relay a weird experience that was told to me a while back that I have only told to one other person, my wife. When I was with the police department in a jurisdiction near Ames, Iowa in May of 1988 a deputy told me about an experience he had one evening while driving down an isolated country road. The area was new to him as he was covering for another off-duty officer. He told me it had just finished raining at about 6:30 pm when he drove past a cemetery on his right. About a quarter mile down the road he noticed a girl walking on the side of the road. He stopped his cruiser to offer the girl a ride to wherever she was going. She accepted his offer and sat in the back seat during the ride. The deputy remembered how pretty she looked dressed in a beautiful pink prom gown. She explained she was on her way to her school prom and after about two miles down the road, asked to be let out on the dimly lit corner at an old filling station. He dropped her off and then proceeded down the road to continue his tour.It was a dark evening and he got concerned about the girl's safety so he turned around and went back to where he had dropped her off but she was nowhere to be found. He passed the old abandoned filling station and continued back down the road to the cemetery and a small house located next to it. He parked his cruiser in the dirt driveway and knocked on the door. An old man answered the door and the police officer described what had happened and he had wondered if the girl possibly came to his house. The old man just smiled and said to come inside and he would explain. It seems that the girl the deputy picked up that night, was killed on her way to her school prom back in the 1940s by a drunk driver. The old man stated that several times each May she walks down that same road trying to get to her prom. He took the deputy into the cemetery and showed him the girl's gravestone. After shaking off the shivers the deputy returned to his cruiser and began his tour again. He was driving on the same road but at the corner where the old filling station was located there was just an open field with trees. The deputy asked me to never tell anyone about this experience.I no longer lives in the area but I have been told that the pretty girl still frequents the old country road searching for a ride to the prom." BIG CAT TALES: Legendary Beasts From the Appalachians to the Swamps

BIG CAT TALES: Legendary Beasts From the Appalachians to the Swamps

In her 2014 article in the Huffington Post, the late cryptid researcher, investigator, & author Linda Godfrey noted seven of the scariest monsters in America. Linda included the 'Wampus Cat' cryptid on the list, in which she noted:"...resembles a huge, unholy hybrid of canine and feline characteristics. People have reported being stalked by these creatures in the canyons around Los Angeles and in some states in southeastern U.S. A supporting Native American legend of a woman cursed for spying on a men's council meeting hints at mythic origins of these creatures. The woman was doomed to roam in the shape of a human-like, great cat and, according to the legends, still haunts many southern forests."The Wampus Cat legends are a matter of fact in Cherokee native tradition...I've heard these tales since I was a kid. Several years ago, I wrote a piece about big cat tales from the Appalachians to the southern swamps. The following is a portion of that early post:Cryptid cat sightings are a worldwide phenomenon. For decades, there have been accounts of large black cats roaming the countryside of Great Britain. As well, mutilations of horses and livestock in Australia have prompted fear that undocumented large cats also dwell on the continent.Over the past few years, there has been an increased number of large cat sightings recorded throughout the eastern United States. Most descriptions have been similar to those of cougars or panther-like creatures, large muscular felines with long tails. However, many of the reports proved to be that of a large feral cat or an oversized pet. Before European settlers set foot in North America, the native Cherokee people of Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia spoke of the fearsome Wampus Cat (also called the Ewah) that roamed the land. This was said to be the result of a woman who had disguised herself in the skin of a mountain lion and spied on the men of the tribe as they sat around the campfire telling sacred stories on a hunting trip. When the woman was discovered, the tribe's medicine man punished her by transforming her into a half-woman, half-cat. Supposedly, this creature still lives. In the early 19th century, the Wampus Cat was reported to roam the Southern bottomlands and was described as ". . . an impossibly hideous critter said to have the head of a man, the body of a wildcat only larger, and the soul of a demon." The Wampus Cat was known to lurk along murky river bottoms and feast upon hapless hunters, fishermen travelers, and anybody else who wandered too far away from civilization. Wampus Cat stories and sightings became less and less frequent after the War Between the States.Old American South books and newspapers state that "Wampus" was a name used for an unknown monster cat as well as other mystery animals. The word catawampus (cattywampus), which means "Cater-Cornered; slantwise, or Evil; malicious" in the American Heritage Dictionary, seems to be a neutral piece of evidence. In 2008, a reader from Knoxville responded to an inquiry I made concerning the Wampus Cat and other mysterious large cats:“During the school year, my girlfriend lives in Strong Hall on the University of Tennessee campus. One night while we were at her place, I was talking about how I was walking back to my dorm (Greve Hall) with a friend of mine. I was beside him, but very slightly ahead. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw what appeared to be a man in a black cloak walk up to my friend and sort of lean into him, almost like he was going to put his hand on my friend's shoulder. Only when his hand fell on my friend's shoulder, he simply disappeared. I will admit that during this time I was a bit tired from studying for an exam, and my friend says he felt nothing, but that's neither here nor there.”“After telling my girlfriend this story, she told me that during the first week of school she looked out her ground-floor window toward the corner of 16th and Cumberland, and saw what appeared to be a human-sized cat walking on its hind legs, with glowing eyes. I don't remember the details she gave me, as far as how long it was there or how long she saw it.”“It should be noted that my girlfriend is from Minnesota and I have no reason to believe she would try to trick me by reading about the Wampus Cat and then trying to pretend she saw it. We're very close and I have no reason to believe she would lie to me.”Granted, this could have been a dorm party-induced phantom, but I think the writer was serious. There are recent accounts of large cat sightings in the south that have an unusual twist.A few years ago, an unknown predator mauled a pit bull and killed two puppies in Brunswick County, North Carolina and residents fear it's the same animal that killed three dogs in September 2007. The county's animal control agency investigated the animal's tracks, droppings, and other clues but couldn't determine what attacked the dogs. Locals call the unknown animal the 'Beast of Bolivia'. Some residents and experts said the predator may have been a wayward panther, cougar, or even a wolf because 3-inch paw tracks were found at the scene. There have been no reports of noise during the attacks which seems strange since this is a residential area. As well, the beast has never been seen.In an earlier incident, a man was taking pictures of alligators in the North Santee River in South Carolina with a digital camera. Later when he returned home and looked at the images, he realized a black panther was watching him. He stated that he never witnessed or heard the animal for the entire time he was at the river. For years there have been stories of Black Florida Panthers prowling in our wilderness, but there's never been any official record they exist.in 2008, a rare Black Bobcat was captured and researchers at the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary say they now know what people were referring to when they said they saw the panther:"For years, people here in Florida have talked about Black Florida Panthers. First of all, Florida Panthers are basically a Cougar. There has never ever been a Black Cougar or a Florida Panther ever found. No record of them, no pictures, no hides, no skins, nothing. but still we hear these stories of black cats that lurk in the wilds of Florida. Maybe we have kind of found that missing piece of the puzzle and we now know what everybody's been talking about when they say, 'I saw a Black Panther in the wild.' But really they saw a Black Bobcat."The sanctuary has been working with the state to run DNA and blood tests. They want to make sure there's official documentation that the Black Bobcat exists... even if the Black Panther does not. The sanctuary later returned the Black Bobcat to the wild.**********MORE ON THE LEGENDSThe mountains of Tennessee, from the hills of Kentucky and West Virginia, are dotted with country folks whose occupations range from farmers to coal miners. Many of these country folks have tales of the paranormal, ranging from coal miner ghosts to legends of the Indians.Jinx Johnston is one of those country people who had a true encounter of a famous legend. The Legend of the Wampus Cat. Jinx was a robust man. He stood about 6 feet high and weighed around 200 pounds. He was the type of man who could not be scared very easily. The campfire would cast eerie shadows on the faces of his audience as he began to tell his story of the Wampus Cat. The following is his story:"There was an old woman who lived by herself in the hills of West Virginia. Townfolk swore she was a witch. People would complain their cattle would be hexed and other farm animals would come up missing. They all blamed the old woman because she lived like a hermit. Supposedly, she would turn herself into a cat and hide until someone would open the door. She would dart into the house and wait for her victims to fall asleep. She would cast a deeper sleeping spell on the farmer and then she would slip out of the window to steal a farm animal. The witch was so good at what she was doing, she was never caught.""One day, the townfolks decided they had grown tired of their livestock coming up missing or dead. They devised a plan to catch the witch in her own act. She snuck into an unsuspecting house and placed the whole family under her spell. She jumped out the window as she had always done and went straight for a cow or sheep. Uncle Jinx always changed the animal this woman was after. The old woman, still in her cat form, went to the barn. She began chanting spells to change herself back into human form. Before it was completed, several people jumped out and surprised her. The poor old woman never had the chance to complete the transformation. It left her half woman and half cat. A ghastly creature to the eye sight. The creature howled with fright and broke down the door. She ran off into the night, never to be seen again. Jinx Johnston said time is important for a witch if she was changing back from an animal to a human again. The spell she had cast upon herself could never be reversed or fixed. The witch was doomed to be the Wampus Cat for the rest of her life.""On nights when the moon is high, and the wind is blowing hard, you can see this creature. It walks upright like a human but has the body of a large cat. It howls and supposedly still stalks the hills of West Virginia. This creature is said to stalk farm animals but prefers young children the best."Jinx would always finish his story by telling his audience how he used to go raccoon hunting. He and his 'coon' dogs would be out looking for raccoons to tree. The moon would always be bright in the sky and the howls of the Wampus cat would ring in his ears. One night, the dogs were way ahead of him. He kept hollering for them to return but they never did. The robust man went on to tell how he tripped over something and his rifle went flying out of his hands. He smelled an awful smell. He said it smelled like a skunk and a wet dog. He looked up and saw this hideous creature. Saliva dripped from its fangs, yellow eyes that glowed in the dark, and a howl that nearly brought him out of his skin. Jinx looked for his rifle but it was lost in the dark. He got up and slowly backed away from the creature. He turned around and ran as fast as he could towards home. Jinx told how he could feel and smell its breath on his neck. He bolted inside his house and slammed the door. He reached for his Bible and began reading out loud. The Wampus Cat howled at his words. Finally, just as the sun peeked over the hill, the Wampus Cat left. He said this was the reason he stopped throwing raccoons at night. Jinx's fear of the Wampus Cat was greater than chasing a raccoon up a tree. The second version of the Legend of the Wampus Cat begins this way. According to an old Indian legend, the Wampus Cat was created. It was said a young Indian woman did not trust her husband. It was customary for the men of the Indian tribe to hunt while the women did things around the encampments. The women were forbidden to hunt. One night, she placed the hide of a mountain cat on her body. She snuck out to spy on her husband to see what he did on his hunting trips. As the hunters gathered around their campfires, the woman watched them. She became fascinated with the stories and the magic that was presented to the men of the Indian tribe. The poor woman was caught and for her crime, she was transformed into what is known as the Wampus Cat. The woman was doomed to be forever half woman and half mountain cat. The ghost of the Wampus Cat is still said to walk the hills of Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. On full moons, you can see the Wampus Cat howling. Is she howling because of her grave mistake and wishes to be transformed back to her human body?If there were no legends, the world would be much duller. Many people consider the Bigfoot or Sasquatch a myth. I’d say just as many people consider the hairy hominid a fact.Sources:essortment.comhuffingtonpost.comphantomsandmonsters.compulpbits.comamericanfolklore.netmcdowellnews.comgodchecker.comamericanfolklore.netEyewitness reportsAmerican Monsters: A History of Monster Lore, Legends, and Sightings in AmericaThe Wampus Cat: Myth or Reality?Monsters of West Virginia: Mysterious Creatures in the Mountain StateThe Monster Hunter's Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Saving Mankind from Vampires, Zombies, Hellhounds, and Other Mythical Beasts**********PHANTOMS & MONSTERS VIDEO LIBRARYPOLL: WHAT DO YOU THINK? Speedy Desert Tortoise is Finally Safe After Covering 3 Miles and Entering a Highway Following Ranch Jailbreak

Why did the tortoise cross the road? Or better yet, how did the tortoise outpace its keepers for 3 miles before crossing the road? These are no doubt questions that a local ostrich ranch in the Arizona town of Picacho will be asking after state troopers called and asked if they were missing a large […] The post Speedy Desert Tortoise is Finally Safe After Covering 3 Miles and Entering a Highway Following Ranch Jailbreak appeared first on Good News Network.

Ted Chiang’s The Lifecycle of Software Objects Is Getting a Potential Adaptation

News The Lifecycle of Software Objects Ted Chiang’s The Lifecycle of Software Objects Is Getting a Potential Adaptation Director Simon Jaquemet has a fascination with stories about machines and their feelings. By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on August 14, 2024 Credit for Ted Chiang Photo: Alan Berner Comment 0 Share New Share Credit for Ted Chiang Photo: Alan Berner Swiss director Simon Jaquemet sat down for an interview about his latest sci-fi film, Electric Child, and shared that another project he’s working on is an adaptation of Ted Chiang’s The Lifecycle of Software Objects. In an interview with Variety, Jaquemet called Chiang’s novella, a 110-page story first published in 2010 that is also found in his 2019 collection, Exhalation, “very clever and complex.” He didn’t share, however, any more details about his take on the adaptation, including whether it would be a feature or series. The Lifecyle of Software Objects centers on the creation of child-like AI bots called digients, who humans buy and treat as a family pet or, in some cases, like a toddler. When digients’ popularity fades and the company that supports them goes out of business, the few humans who still care about them have to decide how to treat their digients in a world where others might want to use them for sex acts, among other things. Jaquemet appears to be fascinated with AI—Electric Child, as you may guess, has AI enter the picture when a baby gets very sick—and said that, in addition to movies like Her and Ex Machina, he was inspired by the works of Stanislaw Lem. “Apart from Solaris, I read Golem XIV [which introduced a ‘lecture’ given by a supercomputer] and Fables for Robots,” Jaquemet told Variety. “They are important to me, because they are exploring whether machines have feelings.” No news yet on if/when Jaquemet’s adaptation of Chiang’s The Lifecycle of Software Objects will make its way to production, much less a screen near you. Read an Excerpt From Sung-il Kim’s Blood of the Old Kings

Excerpts Epic Fantasy Read an Excerpt From Sung-il Kim’s Blood of the Old Kings There is no escaping the Empire. Even in death, you will serve. By Sung-il Kim | Published on August 14, 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share We’re thrilled to share an excerpt from Blood of the Old Kings, an epic fantasy novel by South Korean author Sung-il Kim (translated by Anton Hur), out from Tor Books on October 8. In an Empire run on necromancy, dead sorcerers are the lifeblood. Their corpses are wrapped in chains and drained of magic to feed the unquenchable hunger for imperial conquest.Born with magic, Arienne has become resigned to her dark fate. But when the voice of a long-dead sorcerer begins to speak inside her head, she listens. There may be another future for her, if she’s willing to fight for it.Miles away, beneath a volcano, a seven-eyed dragon also wears the Empire’s chains. Before the imperial fist closed around their lands, it was the people’s sacred guardian.Loran, a widowed swordswoman, is the first to kneel before the dragon in decades. She comes with a desperate plea, and will leave with a sword of dragon-fang in hand and a great purpose before her.In the heart of the Imperial capital, Cain is known as a man who gets things done. When his best friend and mentor is found murdered, he will leave no stone unturned to find those responsible, even if it means starting a war. CAIN Cain had just stepped into the alley that would take him home when the blue light of the streetlamp behind him blinked once before going out completely. A gust of winter cold rustled his old tan coat. The ghost-like shadows that haunted the buildings melted into the dark, and now the only light came from a smattering of candles in the windows above the alley. The Power generator in this run-down part of the Imperial Capital was low-grade, and old at that, so simply covering the fuses with a thin lead panel could disrupt the lamps for a while. A method commonly used by muggers, but no mugger or thief in this vicinity would dare make a mark of Cain. Someone must want to talk to him. Perhaps it had something to do with Fienna. Maybe it was going to be violent. Cain pinched a leg of his spectacles but decided against stashing them in their steel case. Whatever was going to happen, he couldn’t afford to miss any details. In the alley ahead, a man appeared, his face hidden by the hood of a black cloak. Another person materialized from the shadows at Cain’s right, from the main street he’d just turned off of, and he could hear muffled footsteps farther down the alley from approaching figures he couldn’t yet see. Cain had a concealed dagger in the inner pocket of his coat, his hand unconsciously creeping toward it, but he paused—he could make out at least five shrouded figures blocking his exit from all angles now. This was not a situation he could get out of by force. “Cain?” an unfamiliar voice asked. “Cain, of the oil shop?” Buy the Book Blood of the Old Kings Sung-il Kim Buy Book Blood of the Old Kings Sung-il Kim Buy this book from: AmazonBarnes and NobleiBooksIndieBoundTarget Cain turned to face the speaker. A tall woman with short hair stood at the entrance of the alley. No weapons were visible on her person, but the iron in her voice and stance made it clear she’d once served in the legions. And like any ex-legionary, she was bound to be carrying at least one weapon, or to even be wearing armor under her coat. Cain delayed answering as he glanced at the walls of the alley, noting how smooth they were despite their grime, with nary a handhold to aid his escape. He turned his head back down the alley where a man had come to a stop just six or seven steps away, face still in shadow. Not even his nose or mouth was discernible by the light of the stars and the weak candlelight. “And who wishes to know?” Cain finally answered, wondering if talking could buy him the time he would need. “You’ve been asking after that woman all day.” This was spoken by the man nearest to him in the alley, behind whom now stood two more hooded figures. “What woman?” Cain knew perfectly well the answer to this question—he’d spent hours inquiring after Fienna, inquiring about her death. And he’d realized, from the moment the streetlamp had blinked off, why these people were after him. He needed time. He made as if to backtrack but heard quick footsteps behind him. Five of them, including the ex-legionary, just as he had suspected. No way to fight his way out and no escape. “The woman pulled from the river today, the one named Fienna.” How polite of them to keep the conversation going. Their accents were not of the Imperial Capital but oddly similar to Arland’s. Ledon? Kamori? Eshen? Cain’s mind went down the list of provinces and the accents he knew from each of them. “What river?” “Is there any other river near but the Apathos? There’s no use feigning ignorance.” The extended hiss in the s of Apathos betrayed their Kamori origins. Cain was from their neighboring country of Arland, and Fienna had also been an Arlander. It mattered to the people who moved to the Capital which province they came from. Not that anyone in power here could find Arland or Kamori on a map of the Empire. “I have no idea who that is. I just sell olive oil.” This time, Cain let his voice tremble as if he were afraid. “You went to the dye shop where she worked and asked all sorts of questions about her. We know you’re also the one who went to the patrollers.” Cain had been to ten places today, but these were the only two the man mentioned. Did that mean something? “I was asking after the new awning at the dye shop. And reporting a thief to the patrollers.” “Lies. We know you examined the body at the patrollers’ station.” The man didn’t note the three cobblers Cain had also visited, because of the new stitching he’d seen on Fienna’s shoes. If they didn’t know that, they hadn’t been following him all day. Cain made a mental note to return to the dye shop and the patrollers if he survived this encounter. Come to think of it, Fienna had once told him the dye shop owner had regularly accompanied a great merchant, one with a monopoly license, to both Kamori and Arland, before she had her own shop. That might have something to do with all of this. Fienna had not shown up at the tea shop, their usual meeting place, the night before. And this morning, her body had been fished out of the river by a ferryman’s pole. When they’d last spoken, Fienna had said there was something important she needed to tell him. Everything seemed important to Fienna—it was just one of many things he loved about his friend—but this time, instead of the usual excitement in her voice whenever she related news from their homeland, her tone had been one of fear. Whatever she had wanted to speak with him about, Cain thought, it had led to her death. He had to find out what it was. Excerpted from Blood of the Old Kings, copyright © 2024 by Sung-il Kim. Federal Trade Commission’s Self-Defeating War on ‘Big Grocery’

Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan has announced a new investigation into “Big Grocery” to examine the role “corporate greed” has played in high grocery prices. Khan’s investigation is an election-year stunt to blame high prices on progressive whipping boys instead of government failure. If Khan were serious about lowering grocery prices, she would greenlight the Kroger-Albertsons merger and abandon plans to revive Robinson-Patman Act enforcement.  Grocery prices roughly tracked inflation from the 1980s to 2020, when they took off like a rocket. While even Khan admits that grocery prices have leveled off this year, they are still up 21% since the start of 2021. Why the sharp increase? Government lockdowns that eviscerated the very global economic cooperation without which prices are naturally much higher. Robert Bork Jr. said it best: “If grocers are greedy, why did they wait decades until a notoriously anti-business administration arrived before they decided to sport their true colors?”  At the same time, President Joe Biden’s trustbusters have waged war on mergers and acquisitions, a critical feature of a free-market economy. Companies exist to create wealth for their shareholders by meeting consumer needs and wants. Companies merge with or acquire other companies because executives and shareholders believe the combination will better achieve that goal. Mergers help drive down prices through resulting efficiencies and economies of scale.  In October 2022, supermarket chain Kroger announced plans to buy Albertsons for $24.6 billion, which would bring more than 2,000 Albertsons locations under the Kroger brand. The new entity would operate more than 5,000 stores that support 720,000 American jobs nationwide. Before the ink was dry on the announcement, Khan announced that she would block the deal, and has left it in regulatory purgatory ever since.  Kroger and Albertsons have promised to divest 579 stores to clear antitrust scrutiny. No amount of concessions have satisfied the progressives that want to block the deal. A new amicus brief from Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash.; Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.; and 25 other anti-shopper Democrats illustrates the flimsy progressive case against the Kroger-Albertsons deal.  Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Lina Khan (right) confers with Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on July 13, 2023. The two have joined forces to try to block a merger of supermarket chains. (Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call/Getty Images) First, the brief claims that the deal would harm consumers through higher prices. If Khan greenlights the merger, the new entity would save more than $1 billion in administrative costs annually, which stores would pass onto consumers through lower prices. Second, the brief claims that the merger would harm workers, despite a public pledge from Kroger and Albertsons to keep all current workers employed and honor all existing collective-bargaining agreements. That’s why local unions like United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 support the merger.  The brief’s third claim is its most laughable; namely, that the deal would contribute to a “growing consolidation of grocery chains leading to monopolistic practices.” Kroger and Albertsons combined would hold approximately 12% of the American grocery store market, and would not even control a majority of stores in Jayapal’s home state of Washington. The combination would allow Kroger and Albertsons to compete aggressively on price with Walmart, which holds 25% of the American grocery market, and Amazon, Costco, Aldi, Target, and other big-box stores.  The deal’s delay is enriching greedy trial lawyers at the expense of shoppers and taxpayers. Kroger and Albertsons have spent more than $864 million on merger-related expenses, a shameful waste of resources that could be put toward job creation or passing down savings to shoppers. Washington state is one of the states suing to block the deal, hiring a white shoe law firm to assist with the lawsuit. The firm is billing Washington taxpayers $1,190 an hour to block a deal that will lower Washingtonians’ grocery costs.  Adding insult to injury, the FTC is set to revive Robinson-Patman Act enforcement, a Great Depression-era law that prevents suppliers from selling “commodities of like grade and quality” to buyers at different prices. The Justice Department formally abandoned enforcement of the act in the 1970s because it raised prices by chilling negotiations between buyers and sellers. Despite the harm to shoppers, Khan wants to revive Robinson-Patman Act enforcement because it will increase government control over the economy.  In a running gag on “The Simpsons,” diabolical clown Sideshow Bob cannot stop stepping on rakes as he carries out various self-defeating schemes to kill Bart Simpson. Life imitates art, as Khan cannot stop stepping on rakes in her quest to bring private industry under government control.  All of Khan’s crusades would raise grocery prices, not lower them. If Khan were serious about lowering grocery costs, she would get out of the way. Originally published by RealClearMarkets.
