It’s Twins! Astronomers Discover Parallel Disks and Jets Erupting from a Pair of Young Stars

Astronomers were thrilled when they received the news that they were expecting twins—stars that is, after their telescopes recorded dramatic jets erupting from a faraway star system. To preface the thrilling discovery, most of the Universe is invisible to the human eye because the building blocks of stars are only revealed in wavelengths outside of […] The post It’s Twins! Backlist Bonanza: 5 Underrated Weird Mysteries

Books Backlist Bonanza Backlist Bonanza: 5 Underrated Weird Mysteries Add these weird mysteries, with unusual investigations and even more unusual investigators to your TBR stacks! By Alex Brown | Published on June 18, 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share I love a good mystery, with its twists and turns and red herrings tripping everything up. But what I love even more are weird mysteries, with unusual investigations and even more unusual investigators.  Something More Than Night by Ian Tregillis Hardboiled detectives in noir stories is one of my favorite subgenres of mysteries, so much so that I re-read Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe books every few years. This story takes the noir format but makes the gumshoe a fallen angel hired to investigate the murder of the archangel Gabriel. Tregillis uses that classic Marlowe/Sam Spade quippy dialogue but piles on the physics and Christian mythology into something very, wonderfully weird. (Tor Books, 2013) Deadline by Stephanie Ahn (Harrietta Lee #1) Asking for book recs on social media usually means a couple good recs and a sea of bad or inappropriate ones. This is one of those rare gems for me. I can’t remember who suggested it, but I’m ever so grateful. Harrietta Lee is an outcast witch making do as a magical investigator in New York City. The mystery is sufficiently odd but also familiar—there’s a magical artifact, powerful mage families, demons, etc—but I think what really hooked me in was the BDSM rep. Trad pub doesn’t have a great track record with kink outside the Romance genre, so this was a refreshing change of pace from the land of self-pub. (self-published, 2018) A Peculiar Peril by Jeff VanderMeer (Misadventures of Jonathan Lambshead #1) You can’t have a booklist involving weirdness and not include VanderMeer. His young adult novel came out right in the early days of lockdown and didn’t get nearly as much attention as it deserved. Jonathan inherits a strange mansion after his grandfather dies. He’s pulled into a quest-slash-mystery trying to find a magical object before some baddies get it. Plus, alternate realities, talking animals, and asexuality. Who knows when we will be graced with the sequel, but I am waiting with bated breath. (Farrar, Straus and Giroux BYR, 2020) Seven of Infinities by Aliette de Bodard (Universe of Xuya) This is a murder mystery featuring Vân, a poor scholar, and Sunless Woods, a sentient mindship who also happens to be a highly successful thief. It’s set in space in the distant future. A visitor turns up dead, and the deeper Vân and Sunless Woods dig, the odder things get. A mysterious safe, a strange house, and a metric ton of secrets and lies. And really, how can you not be hooked by a sapphic romance between a ship and a scholar? (Subterranean Press, 2020) We Don’t Swim Here by Vincent Tirado After Bronwyn’s grandmother falls ill, her father moves the whole family back to his small hometown in rural Arkansas. Bronwyn loves swimming, which is a problem in this town where no one swims. Ever. As Bronwyn and her cousin Anais uncover the buried past and try to unmask who or what is stalking them, terrible, racist truths come to light. Okay, so this isn’t so much weird as unusual, especially for young adult fiction, but whatever. It’s great and you should read it. Human Feet Sailing In Sneakers Offer A Unique Opportunity For Marine Forensics

Human Feet Sailing In Sneakers Offer A Unique Opportunity For Marine Forensics

Human feet sailing in sneakers can offer a unique opportunity to ascertain the facts of a case based on marine forensics of scant remains. Just as metamorphizing insects on land can tell us the time of death of corpses, the larval stages of barnacles can help us work out how long human remains have been in the ocean, and the results sometimes raise more questions than they answer. The case of Melissa CaddickShoes carrying human feet ashore have often been found on beaches, with one of the most famous cases being the disappearance of Melissa Caddick. The Australian resident was being investigated over her alleged involvement in a $23-million Ponzi scheme, but in November 2020, she disappeared.A human foot washed ashore on Bournda Beach New South Wales in February 2021, still wrapped in a running shoe. The coroner report states that the foot was DNA-matched to Caddick “beyond reasonable doubt,” but as Associate Professor of Forensic Science at Murdoch University Paola Magni wrote for The Conversation, the appendage was too decomposed to establish if the foot had been severed or disarticulated.Marine forensicsIn such circumstances, forensic scientists can look to the shoes themselves for clues. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a testament to the fact that wildlife isn’t fussy, now so stuffed with neuston species that it could represent an ecosystem as valuable as the Sargasso Sea.Barnacles are one such unfussy organism whose larva will free swim until it finds a suitable surface to set up camp on. Armed with its own barnacle glue it attaches to the surface, human-made or otherwise, and its growth is a record of the environmental conditions it experienced during its development.“So, in a forensic investigation where barnacles are attached to shoes, clothes or exposed bones, they offer insights for estimating the body’s point of origin, the amount of time it spent in the water, the waters it travelled and even the potential timeline of events,” explained Magni.“In a study in which we examined 128 pairs of shoes colonised by barnacles, we observed settlement less than 15 days after the shoes were deployed in the water. In another study on four fabrics (cotton, satin, velvet and neoprene) submerged for six months, we found the textile that changed the most was cotton, while neoprene was the most colonised by barnacles.”Here, the running shoe associated with Caddick’s case raised some questions.“Based on the life cycle of its encrusted barnacles, the shoe had reached the ocean surface at some point between three and seven days prior to washing ashore around 21 February 2021,” reads the coroner’s report. “Where had the shoe been before it commenced this period of free floating? The authors hypothesised that it must have spent time at the greater depths of the ocean.”“They then asked themselves why, if this was the case, the shoe did not show evidence of the kind of organisms which settle on objects in the deep sea. The absence of these organisms, they concluded: ‘ … suggests either a short submergence time at depth, or that the circumstances of the shoe and foot prevented settlement of biofoulers, such as being artificially enclosed inside a bag or other material, or subject to shark depredation’.”A grim mystery in the Salish SeaA similar mystery unfolded along the coasts of the Salish Sea in the US and Canada where, starting August 20, 2007, an alarming number of human feet were washing ashore. Between 2007 and 2019 there were over 21 feet found – usually still in their shoes – sparking rumors of a serial killer. The answer to the mystery turned out to be a change in the footwear industry, as 2007 marked a turning point in sneaker design. The introduction of light foams and air pockets meant that the feet of anyone lost at sea were more likely to become buoyant, and with the sneaker making it harder for scavengers to access, they were able to remain intact long enough to make ground.Something to consider the next time you buy running shoes.

Don’t Kiss Your Pet Dragon, Unless You Fancy A Week On The Toilet

Don’t Kiss Your Pet Dragon, Unless You Fancy A Week On The Toilet

As tempting as it is to give our pets a lil’ smooch when we see them, it’s probably not a great idea if that pet happens to be a bearded dragon. That’s because there’s currently a multistate Salmonella outbreak in the US and it’s been linked back to the otherwise lovely lizards. The outbreak of a strain known as Salmonella Cotham appears to have begun in January this year. Since then, 15 people have been reported as infected across nine different states, although the true number of infections may be much higher – lots of people who get sick with Salmonella recover and don’t get tested for it. However, four people have been hospitalized with the illness, though no deaths have been reported. When it comes to outbreaks like this, public health officials often use a technique called whole genome sequencing to identify the genetic fingerprint of the bacteria causing the illness. In this case, it suggested that everybody had got sick from closely related bacteria. These bacteria were also related to a strain that had previously caused an outbreak from 2012 to 2014 – and that had been linked to bearded dragon exposure.During interviews with 12 of the infected people, seven of them reported having been in contact with a bearded dragon in the week before they got sick. Though in one case, it’s thought a reptile roaming free in the house led to indirect exposure, in the majority, this involved caring for the animals, such as touching them, cleaning out their enclosures, and feeding them.“Bearded dragons can carry Salmonella germs in their droppings even if they look healthy and clean,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “You can get sick from touching your bearded dragon or anything in its environment and then touching your mouth or food and swallowing Salmonella.”It’s a major reason why bearded dragons aren’t recommended as pets for people with weakened immune systems, those aged over 65, and children younger than 5 – 60 percent of the reported infections were in kids of that age group. That advice isn’t necessarily because young children aren’t always the best at hand hygiene, but because these groups are more likely to become seriously ill from a Salmonella infection. For most people, however, recovery comes after 4 to 7 days of some pretty unpleasant symptoms like diarrhea and fever. The CDC has recommended steps to try and prevent further instances of infection, such as washing your hands after handling a bearded dragon or touching their enclosure and not letting them roam freely where young children might crawl or play. It’s also advised not to snuggle or kiss them, and as hard as that may be when they are thoroughly adorable, that goes for plenty of other pets too.
