German law enforcement officials were repeatedly warned by Saudi Arabia that a man who drove into 200+ people at a Christmas event in Germany on Friday night was dangerous — warnings that Germany’s leftist government ignored. CNN reported that the chief of the Magdeburg Public Prosecutor’s office, Horst Walter Nopens, said that 50-year-old doctor Taleb al-Abdulmohsen may have been “disgruntlement with the way Saudi Arabian refugees are treated in Germany.” He is accused of driving a car down a road that was completely packed with people who were at a Christmas market in Magdeburg. At least 5 people have died and more than 40 had life threatening injuries. Saudi Arabia sent three warnings about the suspect to the German government, warning that he had posted extremist views online and was a threat to their security. Saudi Arabia first warned Germany about the man in 2007, just one year after he entered the country, and requested in 2007 and 2008 that he be extradited back to Saudi Arabia. Mainstream publications latched onto statements that he made online where he claimed that he was aggressively anti-Islam and that he supported the country’s anti-immigration party, the AfD. However, there have been serious questions raised about whether he was being serious with his posts or if he was trying to deceive people on social media. Several Iranian dissidents suggested online that the suspect actually was an Islamic extremist and that he was lying about what he really believed. Taleb Al Abdulmohsen is not an atheist. It's the crux of our future as humans, building machines like us might be possible. I certainly believe it is. I might be wrong but what I do know is that the types of approaches that people are taking now to build intelligent machines benefit immensely from what this machine that we've built does best. They're doing something completely different than what your computer does. That thing is like flight. It gives these computers access to these new resources, maybe you could call them parallel universes to do something that you couldn't otherwise do.From the outside, they look like giant black monoliths, big metal boxes about ten feet on a side, 12 feet tall and they are high powered. They have a refrigerator that cools these chips to almost absolute zero, just a wisp of a fraction of a degree above absolute zero, hundreds of times colder than interstellar space. Among the coldest and most isolated extreme conditions that humans have ever been able to engineer. These refrigerators, interestingly enough, which are called pulse tube dilution refrigerators, have a thing called a pulse tube which emits a sound roughly once per second which sounds eerily like a heartbeat. So if you're stat you have the opportunity to stand next to one of these machines. It is an awe-inspiring thing, at least for me it feels like an altar to an alien god. They really are impressive machines.At the heart of this big box is a tiny chip, about the size of your thumbnail, and on this chip resides all of the wonder and magic that makes this thing go. I'm not going to describe in any mathematical detail how it all works but let me give you an analogy in quantum mechanics. There is this concept that anything can exist in two states which are mutually exclusive at the same time. I'm using those words because the English language was developed before we had concepts to describe what these things actually are doing. But I'm going to give you a roundabout way of understanding us.Imagine that there really are parallel universes out there. Now imagine you have two that are exactly identical in every respect, all the way out to the horizon, as far as we can see, down to the last little atomic detail of every single thing, with only one difference. That's the value of a little thing called a qubit on this chip. That qubit is very much like a bit of a transistor in a conventional computer it has two distinct physical states which we call 0 and 1 for bit. In a conventional computer, these are mutually exclusive. That device is either one or the other and never anything else in a quantum computer. That device can be in this strange situation where these two parallel universes have a nexus, a point in space where they overlap. When you increase the number of these devices, each time you add one of these qubits you double the number of these parallel universes that you have access to until such time when you get to a chip like this which is about 500 of these bits, you have something like 2 to the 500th power of these living in that chip.So the way I think about it is that the shadows of these parallel worlds overlap with ours and if we're smart enough we can dive into them and grab their resources and pull them back into ours to make an effect in our world. Now this may sound very odd to you, in bizarre, and, in fact, I am using language that a normal theoretical physicist probably wouldn't use. But this is absolutely correct and in line with the way that these things actually work. We've been doing this for some time now and, in fact, we have our own version of Moore's Law, the doubling of the number of these qubits on the chip has happened a year for the past nine years.So for the last nine years, every year, the number of these qubit devices has doubled and it will continue to do so. As a point of reference in terms of how fast these things are in one generation of chip the one from the system that was installed at USC to the one that Google and NASA have now. The speed of the device went up by almost a half million. This is the kind of progress that you're going to see with these types of machines going forward and half a million sounds like an abstract number. But I put up a little mental comparison here to see what five thousand, really five thousand five hundred thousand is a big number when it comes to speed. They really are impressive machines. The following account is from my Dad. He's told it to me a few times while growing up. When my Dad was 18 or so, back in 1978 or 1979, he was riding home from Wednesday night church with his father, his sister, and his brother. Their black Buick made its way back home along an empty stretch of highway. My dad leaned his head against the glass and watched the stars. He says it was a perfectly clear night, and he could see the huge expanse of sky stretch to the horizon. We live in a rural area of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and even now in 2024, at night I can see stars unaffected by light pollution. His vision of the stars was suddenly impeded by a black mass so large he estimates it spanned many miles.His father stopped the car in the middle of the highway and all four passengers got out to stare up at this huge, flat, black expanse, the bottom of some sort of craft. It was gigantic and silent. Dad says that little lights shone here and there, as if through windows, but it remained unmoving for a moment, as did his family as they stared in shock at this massive object. It was so large he couldn't identify its dimensions, it just looked flat. He could not even estimate its distance for the size of the thing.Suddenly a rectangular hatch or a door of some kind lowered allowing a dazzling bright light to escape from within the craft, and Dad could see that at least where the door was, this part of the craft was curved, like the bottom of a saucer. A much smaller aircraft like some weird plane or a strangely shaped rocket slowly exited the hatch door, which raised up and closed once the craft was free of the doorway. The looming black mass remained still for a moment, then as suddenly and silently as it arrived, it flew away and up into the night sky impossibly fast. The smaller craft it left behind, and it too hesitated perfectly still in the night sky before it shot away laterally, toward the horizon.My Dad and his family were too shocked to move or say anything for several minutes. Finally, my grandfather said, "C'mon, y'all, dinner's waiting." They piled back into the Buick. My Dad says dinner was quiet, none of them spoke before going to bed. The next day they didn't speak about it, but by Christmas a few months later, they treated it like a joke, a novelty story to entertain the extended family. My boyfriend and I were visiting the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary near Mysore in South India.An absolutely beautiful place, where the Kaveri River flows lazily amongst small, heavily forested islets, the trees crowded with nests of painted storks, spoonbills, cranes, and dozens of other species. Freshwater crocodiles lurk in the dark waters, all too eager to snap up unwary birds or unfortunate fledglings. Here the trees are not only home to the birds but also big flying foxes; the Indian fruit bat.It was here we saw it, while gently being rowed around in a small wooden boat. At first, we thought it was a fruit bat. Although they tend to roost during the day there were still the odd ones flaunting convention and wheeling around in broad daylight. The first thing we noticed was its size. I know that Indian fruit bats are large, very large, but this dwarfed them. We close with nothing obscuring our vision, probably about 50 meters away over the open water. It was at least four times bigger than the large bats with about a 7-metre (about 20-foot) wing span, and it glided while they flapped. It swooped down to the water, and on the wing plucked a 60-70cm (about 2 foot) fish effortlessly out of the water, carrying it off, thrashing, in one claw. Its body was smooth, not furry, and a mixture of greys, whereas the bats were clearly very dark brown to black. As it flew off, its silhouette was clearly not of a bat, the anatomy different.This was not a flying fox. I am sure of it. I have seen many flying foxes, up close. This was huge and distinctly different. Also, fruit bats are vegetarian, eating, well, fruit and not fish. I have been an avid student of nature for years, and I am aware that you get fishing bats, but not only are they small, but there are no fishing bats in India. It was not a bird of prey; the taut, membranous skin of its wings clearly stretched out between the bones of its 'fingers'. It was still daylight when we first got there and we usually start heading home about dusk or when the court lights come on, it was only a few blocks away from our grandma's house.When the lights come on is usually when the bigger kids get the court to play, but this time we were fortunate enough to have the whole court to ourselves. We were shooting hoops like normal nothing out of the ordinary and the lights came on but we were having fun anyway, the game was 21 so two of us would stand to the side of the hoop depending on which direction the ball would go so it wouldn't roll to the street. and on one of these shots that my cousin made ball just missed the hoop and bounced behind it I managed to grab it before leaving the court when I saw a strange creature.It was like a little person, no bigger than 2 feet, it had the face of an old man with a fairly large nose old ragged clothes that looked like they were hand made and a hat something like a garden gnome would be one of those pointy hats but it wasn't straight up it hanged down to the side. It was crouched down almost like in hiding and when I got too close to it that's when it stood up, looked at me, and ran away from me.Believe me. my first thought was not to chase it. I was scared stiff but my cousin and little brother saw it too and ran. When it ran it was headed for the other side of the court. I couldn't believe the speed of it, for this thing to be so small it made it to the other side in mere seconds, almost a blink of an eye. It ran behind the post and it was gone I snapped out of it and I started to run home as well, and as I ran past that same post this thing ran behind. I turned to look to see if it was there but it was gone.When I got home my little brother and cousin had already told the adults there what had happened and they told us that these creatures are called Duendes.
